Re: Seeking A Good Drink Recipes App

Hmm Tequila one of my favorites. I prefer my Margaritas on the rocks,
but will take them frozen. Also mixology is a pretty nice app. Always
makes me wish I had loads of different types of alcohol, to make loads
of different mixed drinks.

Re: Why Apple's "Batterygate" apology didn't go far enough

2017-12-29 Thread lenron brown
Well consumers probably thought they needed a new device in certain
cases because of the damn slow down, When really all they needed was a
new battery. This article got one thing right though. It will just
blow over and most will act like this company is still the best at
everything. The fact that they are selling the batteries for 30 bucks
is mind blowing, because my thoughts are still why wasn't they doing
this in the first place.

Re: Why Apple's "Batterygate" apology didn't go far enough

2017-12-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
hi,

Thanks Mar for this. Interesting take, but flawed in my opinion. First, no
one was "forced" to purchase the new phone, that was a choice those consumers
made. Second, the mention of all the customers that faithfully go out and
purchase the newest model would do so whether their phone was slowing down or
not, they just like to have the newest iPhone. "Hungry lawyers" though is spot
on, along with some over zealous consumers.

Why Apple's apology didn't go far enough
By Jefferson Graham | USA TODAY Updated 4 minutes ago
In the grand tradition of past Apple fiascos like Antennagate (dropped calls
on the then-new iPhone 4) and the launch of Apple Maps (directions that
weren't accurate), the tech giant apologized again to consumers this week.
The question is whether the iconic iPhone maker's apology went far enough.
We didn't think that it did.
First, Apple was forced to admit that it intentionally slowed down the
performance of older phones in order to keep up with declining battery life.
It acted after a 17-year-old user performed a test that proved it.
Critics howled, the Twitterverse pounced and several consumer lawsuits were
churned out by hungry lawyers. One asked for a $5 million in compensation on
behalf of all the consumers who felt forced to upgrade their otherwise
healthy older phones after they were slowed down by Apple's software update.
They were not given the choice to opt-in for the battery-saving slowdown
feature.
Analysts had suggested Apple pen an open letter to consumers. While the
world awaited a beefier response from Apple than its initial admission, we
tried to do some of the work for them. We wrote the letter that we hoped
Apple would write, and posted it. A few hours later on Thursday, Apple came
clean and released it's own take.
One major difference between our proposed apology and Apple's: We suggested
Apple say they were sorry and offer free battery upgrades for any consumer
who wanted one. Apple saw it differently. It offered an apology but not a
free battery. Instead, it is offering a new battery at a discount: $29.99,
$50 less than usual cost. The deal is available starting in late January and
running through the end of 2018 and only on iPhone 6 and 6S.
Remember, this is the world's most profitable company, a firm that paid CEO
Tim Cook $102 million in salary and bonuses in 2017. Apple generated $10
billion in profit for just the most recent quarter.
Yet it refuses to give away free batteries to inconvenienced Apple customers
who have been suffering from slow downs of their phones that they bought
from Apple in good faith.
Analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights says Apple's replacement battery
costs less than $10. He estimates that only around 100,000 consumers will
take up Apple on its offer. Even if the battery replacement was free, he
says some 250,000 people would participate, the result of which would be
"barely a blip to Apple's earnings."
A free battery would go a long way towards erasing widespread suspicion that
Apple purposely tries to make its older products obsolete in order to coax
consumers into buying new ones.
Apple denied this in the open letter.
"We have never - and would never - do anything to intentionally shorten the
life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer
upgrades," the company said.
But rivals Samsung, LG, Motorola and HTC all say they don't slow down their
phones to factor in older batteries.
"Apple's offer of discounted batteries fails to compensate consumers who
were forced to purchase new iPhones," said James Vlahakis, a Chicago-area
lawyer who filed the $5 million class-action lawsuit. The $50 discount on
the price of a new battery "is an insult to loyal customers who have
consistently and with much fanfare have flocked to Apple stores worldwide to
purchase every version of the iPhone."
Still, Moorhead believes this latest fiasco will blow over for Apple and
fans will continue to wait on line breathlessly when next generation of
iPhones are announced and come to stores, typically in September. I tend to
agree, but it will be harder to take Apple's statements at face value again.

Is your iPhone battery causing your smartphone to run slowly? Here's what to do
By Mike Snider | USA TODAY 11:21 a.m. PST Dec. 29, 2017

Apple has now apologized for slowing down older iPhones as their batteries age,
which could lead you to ask, "What does this mean to me and my iPhone?"
The device maker says it has been using software updates to help prolong the
life of batteries in several models including the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus,
iPhone 6S, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The fix
helped "avoid unexpected shutdowns" and protected the phones, Apple says, but
also caused some phones to take longer to launch apps and do other functions.
As awareness of the slowdown spread, some consumers filed lawsuits charging the
Cupertino, Calif. tech company with deliberately sabotaging older smartphones
to prompt new sales.
If your iPhone seems slow, buying a new one isn't your only option. You could
instead replace the battery. To appease customers Apple is lowering the price
of replacement batteries for iPhone 6 models or later from $79 to $29, starting
in late January and through 2018.
►How do I know if I need to replace the battery?
Apple says in early 2018 it plans to issue an iPhone software update with new
features that let you see if your battery is affecting performance.
For now you can do some initial checking. First, on your iPhone go to Settings
and then to Battery. There you may see a message that says, "Your iPhone
battery may need to be serviced."
If you want additional information on your battery, you can download a battery
information app such as Battery Life from the App Store (see a YouTube video
here) or Coconut Battery on a Macbook. With your iPhone plugged into the
computer, it will give you a rundown on your iPhone's battery.
►I want to replace my iPhone battery now. What are my options?
Apple says that if your battery retains less than 80% of its original capacity
and you're covered under AppleCare+, the company will replace your battery at
no charge. Check your warranty status at https://checkcoverage.apple.com.
If it's not currently under warranty, you will need to pay Apple. It may be a
few weeks before Apple begins officially replacing batteries at reduced rate.
So if you don't want to wait for the $50 price drop, you can contact Apple
online and send your phone in for battery replacement for $79 plus $6.95 for
shipping. Apple says this usually takes three to five business days.
Another alternative is to go to a nearby Apple store where the battery could be
replaced on site, perhaps more quickly. However, when I checked online, the
first appointment available at my closest Apple store was 48 hours away.
If your iPhone is not covered by warranty, you could try to replace the battery
yourself. Tech site iFixit.com has guides to replace batteries on various
iPhone models and links to the batteries needed. Though note that having a
non-Apple approved battery replacement could void your warranty.
Evidently, many iPhone owners are going that route. iFixit.com says more than
509,000 iPhone users have viewed the site's battery replacement guides this
month.

You could

Why Apple's "Batterygate" apology didn't go far enough

2017-12-29 Thread M. Taylor
I tend to
agree, but it will be harder to take Apple's statements at face value again.

best-selling product among the thousands of items it offered on its website
during the holidays. The Dot is the cheapest way to get the Alexa
personalized assistant into the home. It's normally $49, but was discounted
to $29 beginning in November.
.HQ Trivia. The game app is set to launch on Android Monday. Who wants to
win some quick cash? The ultra-popular mobile game show, open to anyone who
wants to try answering 12 questions for prizes of around $1,500, had said it
would move beyond the Apple IOS base to launch on Android phones as well.

.Tweet archiving. The Library of Congress won't archive everyone's tweets.
All tweet activity has been archived since 2010, but beginning next week,
the Library of Congress says it will "continue to acquire tweets but will do
so on a very selective basis." The library says tweets collected and
archived will be thematic and event-based, including events such as
elections or themes of ongoing national interest, like those involving
public policy issues.

I believe that Scott stated he used the NightHawk routers. It appears he is no
longer on this list, but I expect you can find him without too much difficulty
if you need technical assist. I did have some private e-mail conversation with
him.

Best wishes,

RE: Night hawk wifi / fibre routers,

2017-12-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Janina,

I to was a linksys fan until belcon took them over from cisco,

Since then I've used fritzbox and now that I'm changing providers I wish to
supply my own routerr device for my fibre connection,

The netgear night hawk range have peaked my interests as hav a couple of
draytech devices however the dray tech are a bit more costly.

I can get the AC1900 as ET has mentioned for 310.00 NZD,
But need to confirm vpn accessibility before pressing the purchase button.

The technology isn't the very latest, but I'm very satisfied with my Linksys
WRT1900ACS.

I was by no means satisfied with the default Linksys software, however.
That software UI left a lot to be desired from the accessibility point of view.

However, I didn't buy this box to run it's native software. Installing and
configuring lede, a spin of of OpenWRT, was my goal, and lede continues to meet
my needs both on functionality and accessibility:

Re: Night hawk wifi / fibre routers,

2017-12-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi ET,

Yeah I knew someone had made that suggestion for the night hawk,

Is scott still around or has he gone from the list?

The 2 nighthawk models I’m looking at are the R7000
&
R7000P

The full differences I’m ot completely sure of but the P has slightly faster AC
wifi and open VPN or at least mentions it directly where the other only says
VPN and that is one feature I’m needing in my router.
The MU mimo
Isn’t a big interest so long as I have good strong wifi coverage.096910,/.
There is only $30 between the
prices so might byte the bullet and get the bigger unit

'We Apologize.' Apple Offers $29 Fix After Uproar Over Slowing Down
Old iPhones Apple has apologized to its customers for what it calls
a "misunderstanding"
around the revelation that the company has been slowing down older
phones to accommodate for their aging batteries.
"We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We
apologize," the company said in a letter published on its website

The controversy over the slowing performance of aging iPhones
exploded last week after a blog post highlighted the relationship
between iPhone performance and battery condition. Apple later
confirmed that it has been slowing older iPhones' performance to
prevent sudden shutdowns as their aging batteries lost potency
over time.

In the letter posted Thursday, Apple said it considers batteries
"consumable components" and that it has always wanted customers to

macmail rules : limitations, help pls

2017-12-29 Thread William Windels
Hello all,
To clean up my mailbox , I use the macmail rueles in mac os 10.13 high sierra.

It seems I can’t make conditional rules with and/or operators.
e.g. I cant say that all mails from @facebook.com or @twitter.com or @
applevis.com or @apple.com should be removed if they are received 30 days ago.
If I should say the the rule is true if one or more of the conditions are true,
I should see that all conditions seperately are true.
If I should say that the rule-evaluation is valid if all conditions are true, I
shouldn’t have any result since apple mail can’t handle more than 1
from-address.

There is also a option in the conditionlist of a mailrule named “edit
headerlist.
There, I could type and/or/… but this isn’t working.

And I could make also different rules for each from-address separately but then
, I have su much rules….

All hints are very welcome!

Kind regards,
William Windels

Re: Connecting usb devices in vmware fusion.

2017-12-29 Thread Mike Arrigo
I have not used fusion for a while, but when I did, I used to set it to
always connect USB devices to the virtual machine. The reason I did it
this way was, I would only have fusion open if I was using windows for
something, so that's where the USB device should go. I always had the
virtual machine shut down and fusion closed when I was not using
windows for something, so USB devices would always connect to the mac
in that case anyway, I think this set up is probably the easiest.

disconnected from the Mac, booted the VM then connected the drive and I
got the dialog to connect the drive. Try that.

which are connected to my mac.
Normally fusion asks what to do but not in this case.
When i check the usb/bluetooth settings the table there is empty.
But there is a button to remove the usb controller which i’ve tried to do and
then re-add it again.
I would like to have the braille display and a harddisk connected but it can’t
be done as there seems to be no usb devices.
Do i have to add them manually in windows?
Thanks in advance.

Exactly they totally fail and people that think apple can do no wrong will say
other wise. This should be a toggle anyways. The only good thing to come out of
this is that they are now going to let you know when your device is going to be
effected by the battery and replacements will only cost 30 bucks. This proves
to me that battery replacements could have been 30 bucks in the first place. I
mean look at all the money you spend on an IPhone. I mean you can also go
somewhere that is not apple and get the battery swapped for 50 bucks.

We
apologize," the company said in a letter published on its website Thursday.

The controversy over the slowing performance of aging iPhones
exploded last week after a blog post highlighted the relationship
between iPhone performance and battery condition. Apple later
confirmed that it has been slowing older iPhones' performance to
prevent sudden shutdowns as their aging batteries lost potency over time.
In the letter posted Thursday, Apple said it considers batteries
"consumable components" and that it has always wanted customers to
be able to use iPhones "as long as possible." To that end, the
company will cut the price of a battery replacement by $50 for
anyone with an iPhone 6 or later starting in late January. That
means instead of dropping $79 to get a new battery and make your old
iPhone work like new again, you'll pay $29 through December 2018.
iPhone users can also expect an iOS software update early in 2018
that will include new information about their battery's health,
letting people see when the phone's battery may be affecting its performance.
The iPhone battery revelations struck a chord because some iPhone
users believe the company intentionally slows its older phones to
get customers to buy new ones. However, Apple says the practice is

I was by no means satisfied with the default Linksys software, however.
That software UI left a lot to be desired from the accessibility point

However, I didn't buy this box to run it's native software. Installing

Re: Apple Apologizes After iPhone Battery Slowdown Controversy | Time

2017-12-29 Thread Eric Oyen
well,
I consider it rather interesting that Apple didn't make this public. It was in
some of the technical data for beta testing. In fact, they have had an
algorithm in place since iOS 9.x called low power mode (which is essentially
the same type of protection, except it is triggered at 20% battery level).
Also, since iOS 6, statistics have been fed back to apple via their quality
assurance settings inside the phone, and some of those stats included battery
health. So, it is likely that they knew about battery issues well in advance of
the current technology.

anyway, aside of apple keeping it under their hat, I dopes along with some
conspiracy theorists have concocted a scenario whereby they can sue apple and
actually have it make it into court.

RE: Apple Apologizes After iPhone Battery Slowdown Controversy | Time

2017-12-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
I've got no problem saying I think apple do a lot wrong,

 Mac OS high sierra,
 Still very buggy,
Removing the airport devices from their line,
The last three iPhones, wouldn't say their changing much.
