ET,

There is also the fact the 4k does 4k resolution where as the 4 doesn't

For the difference in price I'd say go the 4k.
Infact I did a couple of years ago when it came out.

One difference in the two models is that the 4K has Bluetooth 5. I don't
know if that is important, the only Bluetooth device I may want in future are
headphones. Is maximum range improved over BT 4 and lower?

in the Cloud, so I either need to connect to the computer or have
iTunes Match, which I just got rid of in favour of Apple Music.
Purchased movies and TV shows are all available to my ATV 2 and I

ET,

As it's an ATV series 3, could it be that it's past it's used by date?

Could it be that things are not only not updating but not talking to the apple
id server?

The ATV 3rd is no longer updated. I just realized that since I use 2FA,
that may be where I need to go. Well, I tried several times to enter a
verification code appended to my Apple ID password. Frustrated now.

Gonna be a long night. :/

I did not start over. I rebooted the iPhone and it seems good now.
Tried restarting ATV. Not so good. Every time I try to sign in to turn on home
sharing. I get it cannot find my Apple ID or the password is incorrect. I only
have one Apple ID and everything is on the same wifi.
I must get this going so I can watch Star Trek. I do NOT want to hear about any
political nonsense which is going to ramp up tonight. (nasty grin)

I could reset ATV but that means manually turning Voiceover on (ATV 3rd).
And I am not certain that will work. Maybe?

Hi,

Glad that you found a solution. Didn't want to encourage such behaviour so
early in the morning. Although, it's likely 5 o'clock somewhere. Canadian
whiskey is also tasty in coffee according to my wife.

RE: Apple TV after new Apple ID Password

2019-02-06 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Tim,

Hell I’m crazy anyway,

If I had my way I’d go intravenously for my coffee,

And possibly alcohol as well with the way works going.

And it’s all good when hassling eachother.

Bailieys again should be taken straight from the bottle without mixing it with

odd observation with Text Edit

2019-02-06 Thread Raymond Foret Jr
Okay,

Some feedback would sure be appreciated. Earlier today, I was filling out a
three page application for Section 8 recertification which the local section 8
office converted to .rtf for me before they sent it. I noticed that, while I
was going along answering the questions, as I got further down the form to the
bottom of page 1, and all the rest of the way down, I could read the questions
fine: but, I could not focus the curser so I could type my answers in the
correct places so as to preserve the formatting. Every single time I needed to
put an X by a check box for either yes or no, or needed to type specific
information, I had to go in to the view menu and choose zoom in. Even going
full screen was no help. IS there something I overlooked in the process of
opening the form? Some setting I should adjust for next time? Thanks.

Sent from the first computer with built-in screen reader access for the blind:

Sincerely,

The constantly barefooted Ray

mesh routers on the Apple Store

2019-02-06 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hello.

I would like to know if anyone has bought one of the links mesh Routers from
the Apple Store because I want to know how accessible it is.

I am still using an airport extreme with my iPhone and Apple Watch, but in due
course, I will get a new Mac. Haven’t decided when I am getting one, but I know
I will get one this year. I will want an iMac, because I like that you can put
it on the back of a desk and leave it and it doesn’t take up too much room.

I am also going to get an elbraille, when the new one comes out. I don’t know
if anyone has used one of these, but you can put windows on it and use it with
your focus. I have had a demo of one recently, and it’s really quite good.

I have decided not to put windows on a Mac this time because there were issues
with it when I had a Mac last time, the fact that you never had an insert key
or an application Key.

I use Windows every day at work, and haven’t really got the hang of Pages or
numbers. I think it’s good to be able to use both platforms. Anyway, enough of
my ramblings!

Re: Apple Airport Extreme necessary?

2019-02-06 Thread jeff `greene
Hi Traci,
As far as modems go I like the Motorola one's on amazon. I bought one
and have had no trouble with it. What I did was dump the X1 package
(which went from $129 to $199 without notice) and just went to Xfinity
internet with my own modem. Also if you get your own modem you save
$10 a month rental fee. Just make sure the modem you pic is DocSys 3.0
or 3.1. I know I misspelled DocSys but anyway...
As far as routers go I like the Synology Rt2600AC. Its operating
system is based on Synology's Disc Manager off their NAS drives, I
think its based on lynux. They update it often and have a bunch of
small apps you can install for intrusion protection etc. I had one for
a year and a half at which point it started doing strange things. I've
since replaced the synology with a Gryphon Unhackable Router, which is
faster, will do mesh networking and has a cool iphone app to set it
up. And the Gryphon people seem really responsive to questions.
Probably if you search on amazon for 802.11AC routers then sort your
search by average customer review, you probably wouldn't go wrong with
any of the top choices.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
Jeff

Re: Apple TV after new Apple ID Password

2019-02-06 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Jonathan,

No, sorry for any confusion. E T's using an Apple TV 3 and I was doing it on
an Apple TV 2. Neither one uses the Siri remote. This entire process is much
easier with the Apple TV 4 and 4K models and does not require this sort of
awkward maneuvering.

Too bad this does not work like the put one device next to the other and just
transfer over BlueTooth. I know when I initially set up my Apple TV I was able
to grab some data from the iPhone by leaving it physically close to the Apple
TV.

One difference in the two models is that the 4K has Bluetooth 5. I
don't know if that is important, the only Bluetooth device I may want in
future are headphones. Is maximum range improved over BT 4 and lower?

able to append the verification code is even possible.  That makes it
kind of squash their complaints in that Apple is making it possible to

Sorry, I can’t look up WiFi standards right here and now, but I believe that UK
uses different frequencies for WiFi than Macintosh. I have not done any
international travel since ethernet switched from primarily coaxial to
primarily RJ45 connectors, so I have no direct experience. Perhaps if you had

of doubt it, since usually it is just the base stations that need to be
configure and the devices will pick up the signals from there.

Re: Apple TV after new Apple ID Password

2019-02-06 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
Thanks to 2FA, if you change your Apple ID password, on the 2nd and
3rd gen models you must append the code to the password when signing in.
You request the verification code on your trusted device and that is
what you append to the new password.

So are you saying that you use SIRI on the Apple remote to input VoiceOver
output from your iPhone?
Too bad this does not work like the put one device next to the other and just
transfer over BlueTooth. I know when I initially set up my Apple TV I was able
to grab some data from the iPhone by leaving it physically close to the Apple
TV.

Re: Apple Airport Extreme necessary?

2019-02-06 Thread Traci Duncan
Thank you, it does help.

I have tossed around the idea of buying our own router/modem, but don’t really
know what to choose. We don’t pay for the fastest Internet, but it works enough
for our household. It might be something like up to 150 Mb per second. I
welcome advice and suggestions on models. I looked on Amazon before, but didn’t
get very far.

The airport extreme cannot be turned into a airplay device Canet?

Thank you,

Re: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-06 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Thanks, Tim, but my problem wasn't an inability to connect to some
domain. That's a logical issue with TCP/IP, so a step further down the
road. I wasn't getting far enough to have an IP address from a local
access point, let alone a fully established connection to a gateway
where DNS whould start to matter.

My problem was more fundamental. The wifi radio just wasn't seeing any
available access points. It was detecting no 802.11 radio signal, while
Windows and Linux had no problem with the self-same hardware. It's
possible it's some kind of channel scanning issue on either the 2.4 or 5
GHz bands, so something with the current driver.

Maybe I should take the question to some mainstream Mac forum, but I'm
not sure where that might be. This list is my go to source for all
things Mac.

Hi Tracey,
You don't need the airport router anymore! They are so out of date.
One other note is that I'm not crazy about routers given by your ISP,
I prefer to buy my own, but, I have heard good things about the
Xfinity router.
As far as security, just choose WPA2 and give it a good network
name/password and you'll be all set.
I wish Apple was still updating the Airport routers they were some of
the best I've ever used and the easiest to setup.
Hope this helps! Jeff

today's security needs.  In my world, it's actually amazing that being
able to append the verification code is even possible.  That makes it
kind of squash their complaints in that Apple is making it possible to
do this higher security process on devices that normally don't have this
level of security possible.

Hi,

In some of my emails, Voiceover announces “heading level 1” all the time as I
read line by line. It must have something to do with the format of the

behaviour but I’ve failed miserably. Is there a way to tell voiceover not to
announce heading levels in an email message? Setting verbosity to low doesn’t
do it.

Many thanks for any tips

Let me be clear:

1.) Wifi has been working perfectly at home and on the go in the
States. I should note I'm fully updated with Mojave.

2.) I travel to the University of Southampton in the U.K., and I get "no
signal." But,
if I boot to Windows or to Linux, I have wifi.

3.) I return home to the States, and wifi is working again in Mojave.

All thoughts on this conundrum most welcome.

Re: Apple TV after new Apple ID Password

2019-02-06 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Yes, using the ATV physical remote works well for me. I get the code on the
iPhone, I don't even bother tapping OK to get rid of it. I just use VO to voice
the six digit code, and use the ATV physical remote to enter the six digits and
voila, all done.

have to use the ATV keyboard but will give it a rest for now..

How to force Voiceover not to announce heading levels

2019-02-06 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

In some of my emails, Voiceover announces “heading level 1” all the time as I
read line by line. It must have something to do with the format of the
message. I’ve been trying to assign voiceover activity to change this
behaviour but I’ve failed miserably. Is there a way to tell voiceover not to
announce heading levels in an email message? Setting verbosity to low doesn’t
do it.

Many thanks for any tips

Andrew
