RE: 2018 macbook air wifi issues

2019-02-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Just to add to Janinas suggestions,

Don't file transfer via wifi,
It's a slow platform to file transfer on.
Surfing the internet is one thing but downloading large files is not a great
option although not much better over wired connectivity

Several suggestions:

1. Connect over 5G instead of 2.4 Ghz. The field will be less crowded. This may
be all you need do. I have disabled 2.4G on my home network because it's far
too crowded by my neighbors.

2. Examine what channels are most used by your neighbors and choose one that's
not used.

3. Forget wifi and hook up an ethernet cable. Save the wifi for
minimal transfer loads and keep the wire for the really big stuff.

Best,

Janina

RE: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah it's kind of weird.

I really don't see how they could have done what you report.

Hidden is normally hidden unless manually setup / configured

I've never been in a situation where an ssid for a company was hidden although
mac address filtering or enterprise authentication do make things more
difficult for access.
Not even seeing ssid is extremely unusual.

If I recall correctly, hidden ESSID WAPs still show up, just without the ESSID
specified. Right now I just don't recall whether they say "Hidden"
or just some other string, but I believe they still show as a signal that needs
accounting for, if for no other reason than to discriminate away from its
channel to a chosen neighboring channel.

RE: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Janina,

That's interesting what you say you've done and do with regard to w3c

I'd so love you to check out some of my employers web site and web based
applications

I'd be interested to know what you think of the Oracle product
Oracle Service Cloud,
Or business objects formily crystal reports,

Doesn't matter what I say they ignore the accessibility situation because fancy
is better than functional.

Hi, Sandie:

All I can say is that anyone who has known me over the years knows how devoted
a Linux evangelist I've been. Heck, I'm officially a Linux Fellow of the Linux
Foundation--for real.

Having said that, I want to add that I've found it highly revealing how
differently different web browsers handle various web pages. I can show you
sites that only work under Chrome, or that work best under Safari, or best
under Firefox. The differences are quite astonishing, actually.
So, for professional reasons, as a Working Group Chair in the W3C, I'm likely
to try to keep a multi OS environment going.

Beyond that I've found there are some things I want to do with music and audio
that I can't do on Linux, and I'm tired of waiting for the day I can do them
there.

Still, It's the OS I'm using right now, as I write this email. I'm on an Arch
Linux tower machine running Speakup in a console with Mutt as my email client.
While I also have Thunderbird open, and Apple Mail on my laptop, I default to
mutt unless there's some reason to move to one of the other clients. Usually
the reason that gets me to move is the need to clink on embedded links in an
email message.

When it comes to hardware though, I may agree with you. I'm not sure I like the
idea of no physical function keys, and I certainly don't like the idea of no
boot chime. That would make using a more modern Apple laptop a real nuisance in
a triple boot environment. So, much as I like using Safari and several other
Apple software apps, I'm unlikely to get another Airbook.

Best,

Janina

RE: Anyone using apple air pods under bootcamp with windows 10 1809 and find that there very choppy?

2019-02-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
I don’t think it’s a problem either with Bluetooth or the pods,

I’ve tried mine both with windows in bootcamp and on an android device and
nither gave the result I expected

My Bose Bluetooth headset is so much better when used with windows.

I think apple have just set the erpods up to work best with their own products.

Hi all,

Today I decided to try and connect my apple air pods to windows 10 1809 which I
managed to do, but find that there very choppy and keep cutting out audio. Any
one having problems with this. Is this a Bluetooth problem or a problem with
the air pods themselves. Just wondering if there was a way to fix this or try
to eliminate this.

Thanks all,

Matthew

BTW, this is an iMac 21 inch with a windows 10 1809 installed. This IMAC from
2013 so a few years old if that matters.

Mac OS Accessible DVD Ripper Recommendation Request

2019-02-10 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I need to rip a DRM-free, home video from a DVD.

What is the name of a good, free if possible, VoiceOver accessible DVD
ripper for Mac OS?

I know there is one that many recommend but, for the life of me, I cannot
recall it's name.

Also, if you could tell me from where to download it, I would be most
grateful.

Thank you,

Mark

Re: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-10 Thread Sandie Jazmin Kruse
Janina, i moved from Cph out in the country so right these days I’m all about
artificial sight , so i dont think i will run into them. I will say hi if i do,
of course.
What is funny to me is that i might end up running the project on some form of
Linux, and when i look around in the office, i can see at least 4 mac
computers, it is interesting to me how stuff runs in circles sometiems.

Hi, Sandie:

Yes, yes, I remember my trips to Copenhagen very well. I was very happy
to share what I knew at the time, and Hans and all the folks at the
Institute were always so very gracious. It's a fond memory for me.

Speaking of music, I see there's a very interesting project with
MusicXML at the Danish Institute. It seems it's all for JAWS right now,
but I'm hoping they have bigger plans. I don't have all the details, but
I think they're on a very good path.

BTW: If you run into Hans and Mitsy, please say Hello from me. I've been
thinking of them recently and hope they're doing well.

Best,

Janina

Re: Dropbox with Bootcamp,is it possible to use only 1 dropbox?

2019-02-10 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
Matt let me clear up your confusion, just so you know. Windows is
not running inside macOS. It is running as a virtual machine by way of
an app such as VMware Fusion or VirtualBox. So the Mac does not care
what format Windows uses and Windows does not care what format the Mac
is using. HTH.

Anyone using apple air pods under bootcamp with windows 10 1809 and find that there very choppy?

2019-02-10 Thread ilovecountrymusic483
Hi all,

Today I decided to try and connect my apple air pods to windows 10 1809
which I managed to do, but find that there very choppy and keep cutting out
audio. Any one having problems with this. Is this a Bluetooth problem or a
problem with the air pods themselves. Just wondering if there was a way to
fix this or try to eliminate this.

Thanks all,

Matthew

BTW, this is an iMac 21 inch with a windows 10 1809 installed. This IMAC
from 2013 so a few years old if that matters.

Matthew

Re: Dropbox with Bootcamp,is it possible to use only 1 dropbox?

2019-02-10 Thread Maurice Mines
Good morning, here’s what you need to do. One keep your name dropbox
folder on your Mac. To download the Windows dropbox client, then add
your original dropbox username and password into the Windows client.
This will give you access to the same dropbox information. Since all
dropbox data is actually held on the company’s servers. So you will
have access to the same information whether you run the Mac or in
Windows. You can also download the dropbox application for your phone. I
know that they have an app for iOS but I’m not sure about android.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely Maurice Mines.

Re: menu extras

2019-02-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Oops, sorry, and thanks Simon. You are correct in that it is the top left, not
bottom left of the six pack, right above the Forward Delete key. E T's
suggestion of pressing VO-k is also an excellent thing to do. After pressing
VO-k, you can press each key to learn what and where it is, and even better,
you can press various VO key combinations and VO will announce their function.
Press Escape to exit.

It's a key to enable multiple functions from the keys on the function row and

Janina, agree i run my artificial sight on some Linux stuff, the thing is
amazing... but what is best, on Linux you can submit, torture, whip the system
into exactly what you want it to be.
Something i had to the first time i took my setup riding on horseback...
That is a story far from this list though.
I remember clearly when you was in Denmark talking about Linux Hans Rasmussen
was all over me months after to find out what i used, and, what is as
important, how.
I am glad most blind people have learned to use apple, now we just have to
teach them how to use android.
As for music, with you on that , Linux socks, i would love to have my Keytar
module on Linux, but it is on mac, so i can live with that .

Your explanation is really very good. It’s always been tricky for me, but I

Re: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-10 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Sandie:

All I can say is that anyone who has known me over the years knows how
devoted a Linux evangelist I've been. Heck, I'm officially a Linux
Fellow of the Linux Foundation--for real.

Having said that, I want to add that I've found it highly revealing how
differently different web browsers handle various web pages. I can show
you sites that only work under Chrome, or that work best under Safari,
or best under Firefox. The differences are quite astonishing, actually.
So, for professional reasons, as a Working Group Chair in the W3C, I'm
likely to try to keep a multi OS environment going.

Beyond that I've found there are some things I want to do with music and
audio that I can't do on Linux, and I'm tired of waiting for the day I
can do them there.

Still, It's the OS I'm using right now, as I write this email. I'm on an
Arch Linux tower machine running Speakup in a console with Mutt as my
email client. While I also have Thunderbird open, and Apple Mail on my
laptop, I default to mutt unless there's some reason to move to one of
the other clients. Usually the reason that gets me to move is the need
to clink on embedded links in an email message.

When it comes to hardware though, I may agree with you. I'm not sure I
like the idea of no physical function keys, and I certainly don't like
the idea of no boot chime. That would make using a more modern Apple
laptop a real nuisance in a triple boot environment. So, much as I like
using Safari and several other Apple software apps, I'm unlikely to get
another Airbook.

Best,

Janina

I'm happy to tell you there are lots of gluten free options here in the
States for folks, at least in the larger metropolitan areas. And, we had
gluten free options at the catered lunch buffet at our Southampton
meeting.

I just happen to be an omnivour.

Well, possible--but that doesn't explain why all the available ESSIDs
were so visible under Linux and under Windows on the very same machine.

I should add that my hotel wifi came up once, but only once under
Mojave. I tried it first and got no signal. I booted to Windows and
connected immediately. I rebooted to Mojave and got signal. But, I never
saw it again at the hotel under Mojave, not even once.

Under Windows and Linux I never failed to see all the several ESSID
options, there were about half a dozen, available at the University.

Re: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-10 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
If I recall correctly, hidden ESSID WAPs still show up, just without the
ESSID specified. Right now I just don't recall whether they say "Hidden"
or just some other string, but I believe they still show as a signal
that needs accounting for, if for no other reason than to discriminate
away from its channel to a chosen neighboring channel.

Re: 2018 macbook air wifi issues

2019-02-10 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Several suggestions:

1. Connect over 5G instead of 2.4 Ghz. The field will be less crowded. This
may be all you need do. I have disabled 2.4G on my home network because
it's far too crowded by my neighbors.

2. Examine what channels are most used by your neighbors and choose one
that's not used.

3. Forget wifi and hook up an ethernet cable. Save the wifi for
minimal transfer loads and keep the wire for the really big stuff.

Best,

Janina

Re: Radio player for the Mac?

2019-02-10 Thread 'Shawn Krasniuk' via MacVisionaries
Well, it depends on if you want a free or paid app. For paid apps, I use Radium
most of the time because not only can you listen to free radio stations, but it
also lets you listen to subscription based radio services like SiriusXM. It's a
bit pricy, but the $10 is definitely worth it. For free apps, My Tuner Radio is
pretty good. You can also listen to podcasts as well as radio stations. Hope
this helps.

Hello Lorie,
The page up and page down keys do exactly what their names suggest, but this is
just a visual effect. They do not move any cursors. However, they are used with
VO commands, as are the Home and End keys.
Cheers,

Anne

RE: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Not really something people do.

Hiding the ssid would be something but a different software shouldn't hide the
ssid or change the frequency of the network signal.

The signal would be still in the 2400 or 5G range for the device to see.

Connectivity is a different situation again.

It would be a possibility were there a radio signal to attach to, but there
isn't. The only way this could be possible is if they were using a nonstandard
radio frequency for which the Apple hardware isn't tuned.
I'm not even sure you could retune via software alone. Maybe.

RE: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Janina,

I think I'm going to struggle if I travel over there.

Being gluten free due to health reasons it's bad enough here in NZ to get
proper gluten free food.

 Soupwith cheese sounds dangerous.

I'm interested in the no SSID situation,

Could they simply have their SSID's hidden and not realise what they are doing?
And if their networ is so restricted it might be something they do to restrict
access even further than normal.

Would be worth looking at just to have a play.

Thanks, Simon. No ESSIDs when booted to Mojave. Lots of ESSIDs on Windows and
Linux.

I don't mind telling you it made me real glad I had Windows and Linux on this
machine. I was there to work.

And, just to close the loop, the University was putting some strange
restrictions on the login process. Even their staff couldn't successfully log
me in on Windows. We had to send my mac address to the University's IT
department to have me entered as an allowed exception in their firewall tables
before I actually got access.

That's not the first time I've had unusual difficulties in the U.K. I remember
a JTC1 Special Working Group on Accessibility meeting some years ago, probably
a decade or so, that was hosted in London at the British Standards Institute
(BSI). That place was so locked down they only allowed you out on port 80, i.e.
all you could do with your computer is surf the web.

Well, I raised a stink. I rely on ssh access to my data center hosted server.
They took my mac address and gave me port 22 for the duration.

Then there are the various hotel wifi systems around the planet, not so
restricted these days as they were when wifi was first introduced in hotels.
TOS agreements seem mostly gone now, thankfully. I never understood that. Could
you imagine having to sign a TOS to use the electricity? What's the diff?

Anyone, perhaps the funniest part of wifi use in foreign hotels is getting the
password and login data entered correctly. They want to give you a piece of
paper, of course. Well, OK, they will be gracious and try to help you in
person, but it really needs to be in person usually, and not over the phone,
because they don't usually know the alphabetic character names in English. I've
had them in my room with the laptop on the desk point my finger to the correct
key. Example: the letter y was not something my sighted assistant in Malaga
knew how to say in English!

Almost as bad as going through the buffet line with someone who's English
doesn't usually extend to brockley and stuffed cabbage.

Even though I've digressed, I will add one last thing ... On my way out of the
country to England I was early to Dulles Airport and was graciously comp'd a
pass to the British Airways Business Lounge. Lovely.
I enjoyed waiting there. And, I got personal service. The immigrant who waited
on me tried to be very helpful, but we had to negotiate language difficulty to
do so, e.g. I was offered "Brooklyn Soup." When I asked what was in it I was
told "cheese." Cool, I tried it. Turned out to be "Brockley and Cheddar Soup."

Best,

Janina

RE: menu extras

2019-02-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Standard full sized apple wired keyboard the FN or function key is the key in
the top left corner of the 6 keys above the arrow keys,
This is on a windows keyboard the insert key.
They are fn, home and page up along the top row
And del end and page down on the bottom row.

It's a key to enable multiple functions from the keys on the function row and
in other cases.

What's an upgrade from an XS Max?

Comment: Apple is taking its in-store iPhone push too far by promoting upgrades
instead of repairs By Chance Miller

It's no secret that Apple has been pushing iPhone upgrades like never before
over the last several months. Yesterday, however, I visited an Apple store to
have my iPhone XS Max serviced, and I realized just have far Apple has taken
its iPhone upgrade pitch.
As anyone who visits an Apple store knows, you're first greeted by a friendly
person with an iPad at the store's entrance. I told the greeter that I had a
Genius Bar appointment for my iPhone XS Max, and she asked for a brief
description of my problem.
I explained that my device was randomly shutting down and wouldn't come back on
for several hours. As soon as I finished the explanation, the greeter said,
"Have you considered upgrading to a new iPhone recently?"
I was holding my iPhone XS Max in my hand, but the Apple store employee clearly
must have thought it was an iPhone X. I responded by saying, "There's an iPhone
newer than the iPhone XS Max?" and she quickly laughed and tried to play it off.
A source tells 9to5Mac that this is a new policy at all Apple retail locations.
Employees are being instructed to push for an upgrade instead of repairing an
existing device. In some stores, the source says, an employee is tasked with
pitching iPhone upgrades to Genius Bar customers as they wait for appointments.
Other stores have the Geniuses themselves to pitch an upgrade. There are also
now demo units on support tables at many stores.
Bloomberg reported something similar earlier this week:
Apple asked retail employees to promote the new iPhones using methods not seen
before. Technicians were told to push iPhone upgrades to consumers with
out-of-warranty devices. Senior sales staff had to make sure other retail
workers were suggesting upgrades, and easels offering generous trade-in deals
for the iPhone XR were erected in stores.

zuma.jay (Instagram)
Retail store employees "selling" a product is nothing new. However, Apple
stores in general have been free of such pushes. Employees are friendly but not
overbearing, and you can usually do whatever you want without being harassed.
Suggesting an iPhone upgrade instead of a repair is a stark change from this.
If Apple wants to turn its retail stores into selling machines akin to car
dealerships, that's its prerogative. In my opinion, however, there's a certain
line that shouldn't be crossed.
First and foremost, pitching users of the iPhone X to upgrade comes across as a
desperate move. The device is barely over a year old, and many iPhone X users
haven't even had it for more than a year. Trying to get someone who spent
$1,000+ on their iPhone less than a year ago to spend another $1,000+ is a bold
move.
Further, many people dread the task of going to Apple stores and many have to
drive several hours to do so. The last thing those people want is for an
employee to immediately up-sell instead of helping them repair their existing
phone.
Lastly, at the iPhone XS event last September, Apple's environmental VP Lisa
Jackson took the stage to tout that iPhones are lasting longer than ever,
promoting sustainability and preventing unnecessary e-waste. Pushing iPhone
users to upgrade instead of repair their existing iPhone goes completely
against Jackson's pitch and makes you question what she said.
The only instance in which pitching an upgrade might be ok is if it's an
out-of-warranty repair where it makes some financial sense to upgrade instead.
For instance, I've had Geniuses suggest this in the past for Mac repairs. If
someone has AppleCare+ or is using a relatively new iPhone, however, they
shouldn't be pitched at all.
Michael Steeber wrote in December that Apple's in-store iPhone marketing
"clouds Apple's retail message." Its newfound push for upgrades instead of
repairs continues to cloud what once made Apple retail such a pleasant
experience.
What do you think? Should Apple pitch iPhone upgrades instead of repairs?
