Re: How to restore a personal mail folder from Time Machine backup?

2021-05-20 Thread John Panarese
That would be “easier” in some ways, but it’s also time consuming to restore
from the backup. However, if you are not losing anything current, then go for
it.

Re: How to restore a personal mail folder from Time Machine backup?

2021-05-20 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi John,

Thanks for this. It sounds complicated, though. Would an alternative be to
simply restore my old Mac from the backup? I made the backup on Monday, so
about the only thing that would be different would be the personal mailboxes I
deleted. I’ve never had to restore from a time-machine backup though, so I
don’t have much of an idea about how it works.
Cheers,
Donna

I agree with Donna. Since you can’t upgrade either storage or RAM on current
Macs, you are stuck with what you get when you purchase the device. Therefore,
in order to future-proof your purchase, get as much RAM and storage as you can
possibly afford, so you don’t end up with a device that won’t meet your future
needs.

My MBA is replacing a 2017 Macbook Pro with a touch bar. It is definitely

mostly because it’s response time was slow. Often I had to tap it several times

Hi,

There’s probably a list somewhere, but you can find what you need in the Zoom
menus and/or Preferences. Under the menus, where Mute is listed, the shortcut
will be announced as well. Also, when in Zoom press cmd-comma to bring up the
Preferences, then navigate to Keyboard Shortcuts to find a list.

A few key ones for you:

Cmd-shift-a - Toggle mute on/off.

Cmd-shift-v - Toggle camera on/off.

Option-y - Raise lower hand.

Open/Close Chat panel - cmd-shift-h

You can also simply hold down space when muted to temporarily open the mic to
speak.

Yes, the state of the command is announced when using the keyboard shortcut.

RE: Mac Purchase Question and a Comment

2021-05-20 Thread Les Kriegler
No problem. Worked fine. In my opinion, getting an Intel Mac now would defeat
the purpose of purchasing a Mac. It’s the M1 chip that is appealing because of
superior performance.

Best,

Les

Hi Les,

My MBA is replacing a 2017 Macbook Pro with a touch bar. It is definitely
usable, and with time, you get more used to it. But I never really liked it,
mostly because it’s response time was slow. Often I had to tap it several times
to initiate an action or function. I personally find function keys to be much
more efficient. The only thing I miss about not having it is the quick access
to imogis, but for all I know, there may be a way to accomplish that on the new
Mac, I haven’t really had time to explore that yet.

I got 16MB ram. I don’t plan to run Windows on it either, but I am of the
opinion that more RAM is always beter. :) I also went with the faster GPU.

Cheers,

Donna

I don’t know if I would ever run Windows on this, or if that will even be

would be the only option anyway. So thoughts on memory and the touch bar would
be appreciated.

Hi Les,

Thanks for your kind words. Re my experience, yeah, the first MBA was just
weird, and I still don’t know what to make of that. That said, much of my time
and frustration this week could have been saved if I’d thought to check do not
disturb sooner. It was one of those tsituations where, since I never use it,
it didn’t dawn on me that it could be the problem. Re the other issue, now that
I know where the Accessibility options are, it makes sense, but at the outset
it’s confusing, because you have both the login options under users, and the
Login Items tab. Now that all is working, I am very happy with my purchase.

Anyway, to answer your question. I chose the Air because I wanted a lighter
machine, though the difference between the Air and the Pro isn’t as significant
as it used to be. Cost was also a factor.

Re: Zoom on the Mac

2021-05-20 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

Is there a list of shortcut keys for using Zoom on the Mac? Also, if one

will VO read the current state of each option when the appropriate keys are

Best,

Cheers,

Donna

Hi Donna,

Thanks for your response. Glad your current unit is working better! Yes, the
function keys are a definite plus. I am wondering if anybody with no vision can
use the touch bar? Did you get 8 MB RAM? Ity seems like that should be enough.
I don’t know if I would ever run Windows on this, or if that will even be
possible. If I got additional memory, I’d rather get it up front, perhaps that
would be the only option anyway. So thoughts on memory and the touch bar would
be appreciated.

Hi Les,

Thanks for your kind words. Re my experience, yeah, the first MBA was just
weird, and I still don’t know what to make of that. That said, much of my time
and frustration this week could have been saved if I’d thought to check do not

it didn’t dawn on me that it could be the problem.

But probably the biggest reason I
chose the Air was because I wanted function keys instead of a touch bar.

I think your best bet is using the time machine interface. You have to open
time machine when you are in mail and use the slider to go back to a specific
time in the past in which that folder was present. I have not done this in a
long time, so someone else might have better, more specific directions. With
the time machine interface, you have to use the window chooser menu to locate
the time machine controls and then interact with the slider to go back in time.

Re: Big Sur questions.

2021-05-20 Thread Brad Snyder
To add to Tim’s response, beginning with Big Sur, some alerts or dialogues
cannot be acted upon as they were in earlier versions of macOS.
In these situations, you may find it necessary to use the Actions menu in order
to interact with the alert.
To access the Actions menu, press VO + CMD + Spacebar, to open the Actions
menu, then use the up/down arrow keys to navigate the choices in the menu, and
then press the Enter key to activate your selection.

With respect to Application updates in the AppStore app, once in the update
section, accessed using CMD + NumberRow 8, you will need to interact with the
Details area in order to access individual app updates. There are 2 sections
in the Details area to be aware of, the Available section, and the Previously
Installed section. You will need to interact with the Available section in
order to access pending updates. Each pending update will need to be
interacted with in order to perform the install button for that update.
Alternatively, you may find a ToolBar, that may be interacted with, where you
will find an Update All button, if you wish to not interact with each pending
update individually.

HTH.

updates, it depends on whether they are app updates or MacOS updates. In Big

Preferences, Software Update. If there are app updates, when in the App Store,
press cmd-8 to bring up the updates screen.

2021-05-20 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

To jump into this conversation, I’d say that 8 Gb of RAM will suffice in most
cases. The M1 Macs manage memory and processor actions much differently than
Intel machines. Check out this relatively short video comparing an M1 Mac
performance to a comparable Intel Mac.

Hi,

When you have the TouchBar, use VO-FN-number. So, to do VO-f1-f1, press
VO-FN-1-1. Similarly for f2, f3 etc.

Hi,

The System dialogs are accessed using VO-f1-f1, the Application Chooser. After
bringing it up, arrow down to System, then right to open the sub-menu to see
the specific alerts. Press return to access the alert. With respect to
updates, it depends on whether they are app updates or MacOS updates. In Big
Sur and a few earlier MacOS versions, the MacOS updates are now in System
Preferences, Software Update. If there are app updates, when in the App Store,
press cmd-8 to bring up the updates screen.

RE: Mac Purchase Question and a Comment

2021-05-20 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Donna,

Okay, I didn’t realize there was a faster GPU. The representative in the store
felt the default configuration of 8 MB Ram was plenty for my needs. I did feel
he was trying to sell what was in the store. That’s fine, I’ve had enough
experience with sales people and I won’t respond to pressure. I think I’ll call
Apple and order via phone and configure it the way I wish it to be. All of the
info you are providing is extremely helpful and much appreciated.

Best Regards,

Les

Hi Les,

Thanks for your kind words. Re my experience, yeah, the first MBA was just
weird, and I still don’t know what to make of that. That said, much of my time
and frustration this week could have been saved if I’d thought to check do not

it didn’t dawn on me that it could be the problem.

But probably the biggest reason I
chose the Air was because I wanted function keys instead of a touch bar.

Big Sur questions.

2021-05-20 Thread Jessica Moss
This has probably been asked multiple times, but I’ve been having the hardest
time figuring out how to do the following sense updating to Mac OS Big Sur.
First of all, when those occasional confirmation dialogues pop up that
Voiceover never seems to read, but I hear this constant chime sound over and
over, how do I get to where the message is displayed so I can do whatever needs
to be done about it?
Second, when I’m prompted that updates are ready to be installed, I can get
as far as the App Store itself, but find no option to view/install the updates
once there, so in the end, I have no idea if everything is up-to-date or not.
Has anyone found a workaround for this?

Mac1 laptops. I am sorry Donna that you had so much difficulty with your unit.
The subsequent discussion has helped me recall many key commands and
configuration settings on the Mac. Yesterday, I went to the Apple Store to
receive hands-on demonstrations of the Air and MacBook Pro. I went in thinking
I wished the Pro, but the Air is definitely worthy of consideration. I have
numerous questions, but I will start with just one. What factors were important
to you in choosing either the Air or the Macbook Pro? Thanks for the assist.

Best Regards,

Les

Re: Turning touchpad on and off on Macbook Air M1

2021-05-20 Thread Dave Carlson
Ian,
Not due to Big Sur. Mojave also has this limitation.
Need to use a Bluetooth or USB Mouse to shut off the touchpad.

Re: Mac Purchase Question and a Comment

2021-05-20 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries

But probably the biggest reason I
chose the Air was because I wanted function keys instead of a touch bar.
Cheers,
Donna
