Hi,

National Braille Press has a book about the Mac that can be ordered in
MSWord .

https://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/MAC-BASICS-2021.html

You could try copying some user guides to Word on Applevis’s site.

It has a lot of useful information on getting started with the Mac.

https://www.applevis.com/new-to-mac

Maybe you should start with this link.

https://www.applevis.com/guides/beginners-guide-using-macos-voiceover

I will copy this article to MSWord and send it offlist.

There are training courses free of charge.

I hope others can add to this list.

Hi Rebecca,

Regarding Sticky keys, it is a feature you find on both Mac and Windows by
pressing shift key 5 times in a row.

It is useful for example in case you want to use a single hand to do a
difficult keystrokes. If you press whatever modifier key (ctrl, shift, option
or alt, or command, you don’t need to hold the button beside the other letter
keys. You can just press them once and continue your shortcut .

I hope my words are clear enough.

Rebecca,

I know what you’re talking about being able to lock the VO keys. But that’s not

The differences are summarized in two main points from my experience:

I know what you’re talking about being able to lock the VO keys. But that’s not
actually what sticky keys are. Sticky keys or away for a key press to be held
electronically down longer to allow you to move your finger to another place
and make a combination keystroke without having to actually hold both keys down
at the same time. Hope that makes things clear.

There is also touch support available (with various gestures depending on the
screen reader used), if you have a Windows device with a touch screen. I have a
laptop that is capable of it, but I almost never use the touch input feature.

As I recall, one of Apple's arguments for not adding touch screen input to Mac
devices is that it's generally inconvenient to be touching a laptop-style,
vertically oriented display frequently. I can agree with that, but, then, I'm
faster with a keyboard anyway.

Apple also offers the ability to use an iPad as an additional display for a Mac
- I don't know how accessible this is with VoiceOver, as my iPad is too old for
it.

The differences are summarized in two main points from my experience:

• on Mac, you require too many interactions, which I hope they make it less
required or add an optional mode to be similar to that of iPhone and iPad, but
remains for the application of focus.

I used the wrong terminology. I should have referred to this as locking
Voiceover Keys.

I’m still new to the Mac and use Windows as my primary device for now.

Thanks.

Yes, but I think it is important to point out that the Mac has a lot more
customizations than Windows which surprises me.

Hopefully, more apps will be supported on the M1.

Hi,

That is correct, although that is a different feature than Sticky Keys. VO
does have the key lock as you’ve mentioned as well as single key navigation on
the web.

There are some similarities in the keyboard commands, but the operating systems

As I recall, one of Apple's arguments for not adding touch screen input to Mac
devices is that it's generally inconvenient to be touching a laptop-style,
vertically oriented display frequently. I can agree with that, but, then, I'm
faster with a keyboard anyway.

Re: Equivalent to Trackpad Commander on windows

2021-12-07 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Too many interactions is a matter of opinion, and a misconception from my
prospective. Using the interaction model can often make your navigation much
quicker than without if you use it properly. Think of it like looking for your
friend’s kitchen in a town. When the interaction model is being used, the town
is considered a group of items, the houses within the town are also independent
groups of items within the town, and there are rooms and more within each house
that are grouped and so on. So, for example, you come to the town, and there’s
all these houses. You can go past all the houses that you know are not your
friend’s house because there’s no need to interact with those houses. You
arrive at the correct address of your friend’s house, then interact with only
his house. Once inside his house, you can move through the rooms quickly
finding the kitchen. You did not need to bother yourself with any other
house, because it did not belong to your friend. Very quick navigation if used
correctly, and if you understand the premise behind the model.

Later…

Google Drive

2021-12-07 Thread Lorie McCloud
I'm trying to set permissions on Google Drive so that anyone I send a link to
can view the file. that option doesn't seem to be available or at least I can't
find it. I'd prefer not to have to give each individual permission to view it.
how should I handle this for best results?

thanks.

Thanks.

It is my understanding that there are less keys to press if you use the sticky
keys option on the Mac.

The differences are summarized in two main points from my experience:

• on Mac, you require too many interactions, which I hope they make it less
required or add an optional mode to be similar to that of iPhone and iPad, but
remains for the application of focus.

• There are more buttons on screen of Mac and its apps compared to the
equivalent app on iPad.

I don’t remember another difference now, since most of my usage is iPhone and
Mac. Sometimes I use the iPad to help my mother in something she can’t do
herself.

- I don't know how accessible this is with VoiceOver, as my iPad is too old for
it.

Yeah. I know that. It is like having a touch screen in the window of an
application of focus.

I like it because it delivers experience of using landscape iPhone in addition
to capabilities of keyboard of Mac.

Ok, I thought the problem was with me that I was not able to find something
like that!

I like it too much personally and it is very convenient to assign many commands
to it and use it, especially when I’m not working. It’s fun and changing the
way of interaction with my MBP is somewhat to change mood.

Sometimes, it is easier to reach out where I want using the trackpad commander
than keyboard.

Thank you so much for your replies.

RE: Equivalent to Trackpad Commander on windows

2021-12-07 Thread Rebecca Skipper
The only thing Windows users can do is simulate mouse clicks with the keyboard
or physically use the mouse.

I think JAWS will recognize mouse movements, but this is no where near the
Mac’s trackpad commander.

Hi,

Me neither. In fact, I attended Sight Tech Global last week, and heard Windows
screen reader users lamenting about not really having a concept of how mouse
navigation behaved. VoiceOver has had that from the start. Now, TrackPad
Commander wasn’t there from the start, but mouse and trackpad navigation
definitely was.

Re: disabling voice over commands with particular applications

2021-12-07 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

In addition to Jonathan’s advice, there is also the “Ignore Next Keypress”
command in VoiceOver. It’s VO-tab. This will tell VO to ignore the next
keypress allowing you to use other app shortcuts. I use this in Google
Docs/Sheets/Slides occasionally. It’s an extra keypress, but an option for you.

Fwd: disabling voice over commands with particular applications

2021-12-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I switched VoiceOver to only use the capslock key as a modifier. As far as
I know, this creates no conflicts with other programs. This can be changed
in the general area of VoiceOver utility.
There is one VO command that will still use control-option when you do this
that is for turning off Numpad commander, instead of being capslock-numpad
clear, it is control-option-numpad clear.
Can you tell me a bit more about this editor? I use Visual Studio Code
right now while working with code and find its whole plugin structure a bit
clunky.
