pages spell check behaving strangely

2014-04-24 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
When spell checking a document, I tell spell check to ignore certain words, for
example when I write: hahaha but as I'm spell checking, it brings that back
to be corrected and some other words, even after I've told it to ignore them.
sometimes I'll press the ignore, or learn buttons and nothing will happen. Or
I'll correct something and it'll try to keep suggesting that correction in
other places and I can't seem to move on to continue checking the rest of the
document.
As you can imagine this is extremely annoying so if anyone knows of this issue
or can help me fix it any help is greatly appreciated. Is it some kind of bug
in pages?
Kind regards
Andrew

accessing documents in pages on other apple devices

2014-04-20 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
If I was to download and install pages on my IPhone and access a document
that's originally on my mac, How would I do this?
I know you can put a document in the cloud and have it apppear in pages on the
phone and mac, and I assume any changes made would instantly appear in both
copies of the document, say if I made changes to a document on my phone, they
would apppear on my mac?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Andrew

Re: words still being corrected

2014-04-18 Thread Andrew Head
Hi Alex, Thanks for letting me know about spell check, I had a look in the edit
menu of pages and saw an option under spelling and grammar that said check
spelling while typing, and another that said, correct spelling while typing. I
unchecked both of those so will see what happens when I do more writing
tonight. :)
Thanks again for your much appreciated responses. :)
Hope you have a great day,

Re: mac learning curve

2014-04-03 Thread Andrew Head
Learning the mac sure is a big learning curve. Simple tasks you knew how to do
under windows suddenly become tricky until you know the correct keystrokes.
Ultimately however, once you've mastered the basics of what you want to know,
you'll pick up on things much faster and everything will make more sense and
it'll be worth making the switch. I am still a somewhat new user myself having
only got my mac last year, but I'm so glad I did. more things just work
straight out of the box and some things such as downloading books from audible
work straight out of the box, without having to download extra software to
accomplish this, and lots of things work out of the box because accessibility
itself is straight out of the box.

Good luck Hang in there, and enjoy your mac. :)

I think the learning curve is steep for most people and in this I was
fortunate as I am (unfortunately) unemployed and so could take the time to
learn the Mac. For me the most difficult aspect was knowing how to access
help because this list though helpful, was unable to assist until I learned
how to compose an email. I say this because if I'd known that would have been
the first question I'd have asked. Composing a new email is done with command
plus n once you open the emial client.

Hello to the person who is thinking of making the switch to mac:
I did this about a year ago and here are my thoughts.
First of all, the reason I switched was similar to that of other people, my
PC became inoperable one to many times and it was at a time when I was to
have begun an online teaching assignment. I came very close to losing my
job because getting the PC laptop repaired/replaced and then everything
restored took so long. It was a total disaster!

The learning curve was steep for me and it took about two months to return
to any semblance of efficiency. I am sure it is shorter for many people and
longer for others. So, during the transition, it would be helpful to allow
for the time and energy it will take to learn the new system and screen
 reader.

There are fantastic resources on this list for getting help. These include
several people who are authorised by Apple to teach the Mac using Voiceover.
Keep in mind however, that Apple does not pay for this training and
although it is reasonably priced, this is one area where Apple could do
better. I live close to an Apple store and although I had the One to One
training the first year I had my Mac, I did not renew it. I found that the
trainers were very knowledgeable about the Mac but not about Voiceover. I
receive far superior information from this list without leaving home.

If you live near an Apple store you also have access to something called a
Genious Bar. If you are having some difficulty with your computer, after an
upgrade for example, you can take it to them and get it sorted out for free.
Apple has phone support which others on this list have much more experience
 with than I do.

In general, working with and maintaining the Mac is a much more streamlined
process than a PC. For example, my disk drive bit the dust the last time I
was working in India. Because I have Apple Care, it was replaced with no
charge but I found that the restoration process was a thousand times easier
and less time-consuming than it ever was on the PC. Apple has Time Machine
which makes a backup of your disk including data which you use to restore
the system. If you haven't backed up in a while, it even reminds you to do
 it.

So, if you do switch to the Mac, be sure and allow yourself time to
integrate the new knowledge systematically. I for one, would never even
consider returning to using a PC. But if for some reason I had to, I would
either use bootcamp or VM Fusion instead of going back to a computer
environment which is so unstable and unpredictable. To me, using a PC
became unviable in my work environment so it had to go.

The only thing I find more difficult with Mac is using Skype. On the PC you
can use GW Connect which manages voice and text chatting tasks very well.
When I called GW Micro to ask them if they would make a Mac version, I
thought they were going to hang up on me. So, that is the only compromise I
 feel I have made.

Good luck with your decision and keep asking us questions.
 Jean

I downloaded 2 albums from itunes today. One was not downloading properly due
to poor internet. When the internet was restored, I tried check for available
downloads, in the hope the album would finish downloading. After this, the
album was still incomplete. I decided to remove the album off my computer and
try again. However, this didn't work because I got a message saying alll
purchases for my apple ID had already been downloaded.
I managed to get the album back by downloading it on my phone and syncing with
the computer. However, I can find the album in itunes itself, but not on my
local hard drive in the itunes media folder. The album I purchased earlier
today is still there, but not the redownloaded one. Anyone know how I can find
it?
Any help is most deeply appreciated.
Hope everyone has a great day,
Andrew

Re: Playing DVD's on the Mac

2014-02-24 Thread Andrew Head
Hi Tim,
That's great information, I'll remember that, but is there another dvd player
for the mac that displays titles and chapters in a nice accessible format, like
how dvd audio extractor does under windows?
Kind regards,
Andrew
On 22 Feb 2014, at 3:29 am, Tim Kilburn kilbur...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi,

A couple things to try in DVD player.

 * Once the DVD has loaded, go up to the menubar with VO-m and over to the Go
menu, down to Title and choose one of the Title options to see what plays.
 * Normally, if the DVD has just one Title, with a number of Chapters, then it
should play all Chapters once it starts playing. If the DVD is set up like a
bunch of episodes of a TV Show where the different episodes are actually
different titles, then each one has to be accessed separately.
 * On occasion, you can press return after the DVD has loaded, press the down
or right arrow key a number of times and get one of the other titles to play.

The problem here is that the DVD menu on any given DVD is simply a graphical
representation, and there usually isn't anything for VO to grab ahold of so
 it can be read.

 Hi:
I have a DVD I would like to play. It has five parts.
When I loaded it into my Mac I found the Play button but nothing happens. I
actually got the first part to play once, but that's about it and never any
 of the second part etc.
So I loaded it into VLC. I turned off the DVD menu because I read that
somewhere and I could see the play again, but only the first chapter plays
once again. And the audio was very choppy like the dVD was damaged which it
 is not.
So I downloaded dVD Extractor. I've used that on windows and it's accessible
there to both play and rip the audio. On the mac none of the buttons were
labeled but the hints gave me clues if those clues are to be believed. I can
play the first chapter, and of course can't play any of the subsequent ones.
Same when i go to extract the audio, it doesn't extract any other than the
first chapter or give me the option to do so.
So is this about copyright or something or is there something i'm doing
wrong? I can see or rip all the chapters in windows, but can't play or rip
any on the Mac no matter what I do so far.
 Thanks in advance.

mac version of dvd audio extractor and fantasy games

2014-01-07 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
Just wondering, is there a version of dvd audio extractor for the mac? or is
there another program that for the mac that is easy to use and does the same
thing as dvd audio extractor? Personally I have particularly found this program
useful for moving through the titles on the dvd, for example, moving to the
normal track, or the audio description track or deleted sceenes and playing
each of those in turn, also the fact that you can turn audio description or any
other track into mp3 is highly useful.

Also, are there any fantasy audio games for the mac? There is a game under
windows called entoombed in which you choose a fantasy creature such as human,
dwarf, elf, ogar etc then you choose a job such as mage, fighter, druid, etc
and you are trapped in a dungeon and have to fight your way out. It’s an
awesome game and I wish I knew about when I was much younger. Are there any
audio games for the mac like the one I’ve described above?
Hope everyone has a great day,
Andrew

I have maxed out my mac, I have 512 gb storage, 8 gb ram and the I7 processor,
so I can quite easily run windows 7.
To clarify, It’s recommended to allocate 10 gb for windows and jaws, plus
another 10 for other things? I’ll only be using a couple of games, dvd audio
extractor, unless there is a version of that for the mac, and sendero gps and
maps for the pc.
20 gb should cover that nicely.
and I guess 1 gb of ram since the games are only audio ones.
Hope everyone has a good day,
Andrew

To add a bit more, VMWare is an app like any other. When it is running a

disk space. The disk space, as previously mentioned, is allocated as you use
it. So I usually give 60GB to my virtual machine knowing that I'll only use a
few of those GB for the initial Windows install plus whatever else I put in.
How many actual GB Windows takes depends on what version. Win7 with the
basics like Jaws and Firefox can easily eat up 10GB. For most folks disk
space is a lot more available than RAM or CPU. I don't know as much about RAM
but CPU is like most apps. If you just have VMWare with Windows sitting there
doing nothing you'll use very little of your Mac's CPU. I usually try to
allocate at least two CPU on Windows newer than XP. I generally give 512MB
RAM to XP, 1024MB to anything newer and 2048MB to any 64-bit Windows. Of
course you can't do that if it will starve your Mac side. If your machine
only has two CPUs and 2GB RAM, don't allocate it all to Windows or things
 will bottleneck quickly.

need more, for vista and seven you need a gig of ram and 20 gigs of disk
 space just for the OS.
As far as resource usage, of course it has to come from somewhere, so they
won’t be available on the mac. The good thing though is that the settings
you choose for the VM aren’t immediately allocated. So, if your VM has 2
gigs of ram, but the VM is only using half of it, then vmware won’t use
those 2 gigs as long as it’s not needed. The same holds for the CPU, where
you can also specify how many cores a VM can use. But again it won’t
immediately use all of it. For disk space, you can choose if you want it to
already allocate the space (EG, a 20 gig virtual disk would already be 20
gigs), or not (so then that file wouldn’t take up the space if it’s not
 being used).

For games, you can play audio games and anything light. But if you want to
play main stream games that use a lot of video card resources, you’ll be
better off setting up a bootcamp partition, so the game can use all the
 resources of your mac.

Re: Advantages and dis-advantages of the compact and HQ voices of Voiceover

2013-12-23 Thread Andrew Head
Personally, I always use higher quality, it sounds more human I’d rather have a
natural sounding voice than the robotic compact voice, high quality makes for a
much nicer listening experience. I personally can’t understand when you have
the high quality voices available for free, why you wouldn’t use them, but each
to their own. *smile* I have a wide range of voices, I use the australian,
british, scottish, irish, south african, and american voices, male and female
and switch between them every so offten, when I get tired of one for a while,
I’ll switch to another, use it for a little while, and switch to another. I
adds variety and makes reading different things all the more interesting.
On 24 Dec 2013, at 11:43 am, Daniel McGee danielmcgee...@googlemail.com wrote:

Dear all, I have been thinking of late about the difference between the two
different voices you get with Voiceover premium and compact so here are my
thoughts. I would love to know what you think yourself and if you want to add
to the discussion then by all means feel free to do so.

Note: this list is by no means extensive its just what I think and what I
write may differ to each and everyone’s personal experience.

This is evaluated with the english Daniel voice.

 Premium voices
 Advantages:
 1. Of a higher quality to listen to when reading.

 2. Louder in volume.

 3. At times, may pronounce a word more clearly in addition, also be more
accurate at saying certain words better.

 Disadvantages:
 1. When trying to speed up the voice after 45% on OSX or 30% on IOS. Find
that they become less intelligible to understand. Therefore, finding that I
have to remain at the above percentages or even decrease the speed.

 2. When reading passages that contain words e.g. the, in, were, her and with.
Find that such short words can be easily missed. So then I'm forced to
interact with document, HTML area of webpage etc to find the currently missed
word and then resume with say all after understanding it with the words
 method either IOS or OSX.

 Compact voices

 Advantages:
 1. Able to easily speed up above the previous percentages. In other words,
listen to the voices at a reasonably faster speaking-rate.

 2. When reading documents find that shorter words are read, pronounced and
spoken better. This seems to be the case too when reviewing by words.

 3. Overall, to me it seems to be a better experience when reading by say all
in the fact that clarity, pronunciation and understandability are the key
factors to my hearing and productivity.
For me, the premium voices seem to be a bit for lack of a better word “strong
on the ear.” I find the compact voices more robotic and interestingly this
feels more natural to hear for me. However, Feel free to dis-agree if you
want to and if so I would love to know why?

 Disadvantages
 1. obviously, the voices are of a lower quality so some people may find or
even struggle to use the compact voices hence the premium ones for those who
need them for a more natural sounding reading experience.

 2. Pronunciation and clarity of words may not be for the end user liking.
Again, echoing the above with a different factor this being the compact
 version taken into account.

 Conclusion
This primarily being focused on the UK Daniel voice. Compact or premium. I
have found that I move towards the compact version of this voice. However,
since the release of Mavericks and IOS7, I make use occasionally of the
premium version in certain cases since they have made compact more worser in
my humble opinion in the latest version of the operating systems than there
 previous counterparts.

Now is though where you guys come in. For those who are using the Nuance
voices on OSX and IOS which voice do you use and do you prefer compact or
 premium and if so why?

Seriously, ladies and gentlemen, I would love to know what you use and why
you use it. I have done extensive testing to the best of my ability which is
why I wanted to post my experience and findings to you in the hope that you
will share your own thoughts too about the voices.

If you could share as much information as possible on how you use your voices
speaking rate, type of voice etc then would be grate.
I just want to know how others use there voices and what they prefer etc.

Ok I’m going to stop now. If you haven’t already fallen asleep by the end of
this post then full marks to you. lol
Its I wanted to make it as detailed as possible so that people know what I’m
 asking.

 Thank you

 Daniel

determining the colour of font in pages and how to change it?

they had made changes in red. Naturally, visually, if some font is a different
colour, this doesn’t look good, especially in a professional document like a
resume.
Using pages, how do I tell what colour font is and how do I change it?
Thanks heaps in advance for all your help, much appreciated.

safely remove hard ware on mac

2013-12-07 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
when I disconnect my victor reader stream from the mac, I press command E to
eject. I then unplug the player from the computer. sometimes I turn it off
first before taking the usb cable from the computer. Almost every time, I get a
message saying the device was not ejected properly.
Is there a safely remove hard ware option? if so I can’t find it. What in the
world am I doing wrong. something is obviously wrong because I’m getting
incorrect card space reports and now have to reformat the sd card.
Any help is greatly appreciated,

advantages and disadvantages of using a braille display

2013-12-01 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
I’m looking into perhaps using a braille display with my mac. for a long time I
couldn’t see much point of a braille display because you’ve got the voice, so
there’s no need for the braille. however, I’ve recently changed and see there
are times where using a display can be good. Especially with my Iphone. I’ve
tried turning the speech off and using the display to remotely control my phone
and read the display.
This has been good in noisy environments where others are around and having the
phone’s speech muted and me using the display is nice. You can also be private
if you wish.
I for those who are experienced braille display users, apart from the advantage
of not having to worry about headphones, which can be annoying at times I find
when using the computer. One obvious advantage is no head phones. what are
other advantages and disadvantages of using a braille display with a mac? how
about having speech and braille at the same time, or muting speech? and do
people usually leave the display connected all the time? if so, why? and if
not, why not? and if not, what specific reasons do you connect your display.
Thanks in advance for any answers.
Hope everyone has a wonderful day,
Andrew

For rules, the rules area of Mail preferences is where you want to be.

Since I am a couple versions back on OS right now I will not give specific
instructions, but to open preferences in any app you can select it from the
AppName menu or type command-comma. Once you have the preferences for mail
open you need to click on the Rules button in the toolbar. Either use item
chooser or interact with the toolbar at the top of the screen

THere will be an Add rule button.
Mail also has a feature called Smart Mailboxes which can work similar to
rules, but are not actions that only occur when a new unread e-mail is first
 included in the system.

Also, at one point I was considering purchasing MailActOn which is an
extension that has more flexible rules and also allows shortcuts for those
rules. I am not sure if they are still in business but if you are a mail
power user, you should look for extensions like this. I believe Glen
Fleishman has a listing of his essential mail add ons.

Finding audible books once downloaded to your computer

2013-11-17 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
I saw on the audible website, you don’t need any extra download software, the
books will download to itunes. I haven’t tried downloading from audible on my
mac yet, but a friend of mine said he couldn’t find his books in the books
section of itunes. Would they be in the downloads section? or would they be in
Ibooks? I saw an update to ibooks that said your itunes books now show up in
IBooks.
kind regards,
Andrew

voice over spelling words it doesn't recognise

annoying hearing voice over spell it all the time. Can I make it try to
pronounce it instead of spelling it out?
Thanks heaps,

Introducing myself, questions from a new mac user

2013-10-30 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
My name is Andrew. I am 23 and from Australia.
I have recently switched from windows to the mac. I have had an IPhone for 2
years now, and liked the idea of the built in screen reader and having the same
access as sighted people out of the box, without the need to buy or install any
extra software! I have also been unimpressed with Jaws particularly with jaws
15, and the so called new features which are really improvements to what’s
already there.
I look forward to participating in this group and hopefully down the line,
helping fellow new users.
I have had help with a lot of things, I’ve found I need to relearn how to do
everything all over again. It’s a challenge, but fun at the same time.
I have some questions I would like some help with please.
1. I know how to copy from an external hard drive to the mac hard drive, but
how do you copy between 2 locations on the mac hard drive itself? say how would
I copy from downloads to my personal folder?

2. How do you attach files to emails, and save attachments?

3. What is the keystroke for receiving new email?

Thanks in advance for any help,
God bless,
Andrew
