Re: Muting startup sound

2013-07-16 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello Antonio,

The start up sound is the result of tests run at start up to indicate
that your Mac is running okay and the OS is functioning properly. I
just read on an Apple Support Communities forum post, also, that there
is a different sound to indicate problems with RAM, as well, so that
start up sound is apparently pretty important. I believe it was
originally designed as a joke but must have since evolved.

Re: MacBook Air upgrade options

2013-07-14 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi Phil,

I have only ever worked with a MacBook Pro running 4gb of ram and with
a 320 hard drive (not an SSD). From my experience, the virtual
machine setup with usable for tiems when you only want to run Windows
for a few minutes, in somewhat limited situations. What I have found,
however, is that after setting up Boot Camp on my computer, I see no
difference in performance whatsoever. I have been running my system
under Windows exclusively over the past week or so for school-related
things that I need Microsoft Word for, and it is though I were running
on a PC. I always found Fusion with Windows and JAWS, or any other
screen-reader, to be very sluggish, especially if I had other programs
running in the background, no matter how much I increased available
memory to the VM through Fusion settings.

Now, this is only my opinion and thoughts, of course. It very well
may be that for most people this set up works perfectly fine. Indeed,
I made it work for me for around a year or so. However, for
day-to-day reliable performance, I found I needed Windows under Boot
Camp, and again, thank you to all on this list who helped me to
achieve that. Your patience was and is very kind and appreciated.

I considered upgrading my RAM, etc. and certainly increased RAM may
help, but I'm not certain how much. I know that VoiceOver likes to
say "Busy, busy, busy" in programs sometimes, and I remember that I
have had the same issues with that as someone who had 2 gb of ram.
But ram is always supposed to be the biggest factor in immediate
increased performance.

Thanks,

Harry

Hello Phil and Others,

I have a group of DVD-R's, and also CD-R;s. I burned the Windows ISO file onto
a DVD-R and then realized the DVD was in Mac Extended format. However, it
doesn't show up in the Disk Utility when it is just blank, so I can't seem to
format it to FAT32 or whatever format I need. I have Dropboxed the Windows ISO
file to have a person using Windows put it on the DVD, but is there anything
special I need to do in either case to make it a bootable DVD so I can install
Windows? The Windows drivers and support files it wanted me to install on a
USB flash drive formatted as FAT32, which I have done, and they are on there
with no problem.

I really appreciate any help. It is very kind and really useful. Once this is
done, I understand that Windows will run at native speed without the delay of a
virtual machine? But also if I understand correctly, I will still need to
reconfigure my capslock key to work as an insert key, or a similar key to do
the same?

Thanks so much,

Hary

Hello alex,

Rich edit areas are notoriously bad with VO. The work-around I have found is
to type your text in TextEdit or another word processor and then paste it into
the rich text edit area after interacting with the area. If you turn QuickNav
off and arrow up and down you can see that your text is there but you are
unable to move by word, character, etc.

Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel

2013-06-17 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello Guys,

As regards VMWare Fusion vs. Bookcamp, here are my thoughts:

I am running 4gb of ram with VMWare Fusion (Windows 7 and JAWS 13), and despite
the fact that it works okay, not counting the problems I wrote about most
recently on this list, I am going to switch to Bootcamp for the following
reasons:

1. Productivity and stability. I need Windows to run as if it were the only
operating system, and I need to be ale to take full advantage of MS Word,
Excel, and the accessibility of JAWS with these programs, as well as running
Kurzweil 1000 v. 11 with a scanner. My work will soon be requiring me to have
the ability to do track changes, leave comments on files I edit, and all
without the need t oworry about mistakes with formatting due to converting from
pages back to Word.

All-in-all, I think it is all very individual. It sounds like if I want to use
Bootcamp that I should get a blank CD to burn my Windows ISO file for my copy
of Windows that I still have availabe through the Microsoft Store. Then
basically it sounds like I should get someone with a little more computer
knowledge than I have to get things up and running for me. I also like the
idea of using Boocamp so I don't have to worry about JAWS authorization
problems -- authorize it once and I should be good to go, regardless if I
create different user accounts on the Windows partition.

The process gets confusing because there are so many different things to
consider. For example, do I still need to remap an insert key when using
Bootcamp, or do the Bootcamp drivers take care of those issues for me with a
laptop keyboard? Also, I like the idea of holding down the option key and
selecting the operating system at the boot screen -- is it difficult to knwo
when to hold the option key down or how long to hold it down for?

Thanks for your thoughts. I wonder if people at an Apple Store woudl be able
to help me with the Bootcamp installation.

Thanks,

Harry

Strange Issue with VMWare Fusion/Sharing Virtual Machine between OSX User Accounts

2013-06-16 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

In brief, the situation is as follows: Two different accounts for OSX and
Windows both, one for personal and one for work, to keep things nicely
separated. Tried to share the VM between both OSX user accounts by placing the
VM in /users/shared, and now Sharpkeys mapping for right option to
capslock/insert is no longer remembered, and even after reauthorizing JAWS, the
authorization is not remembered on either Windows account and regardless of the
OSX user logged in at the time. More detailed explanation follows in a
numbered list if it is helpful.

1. I have two different OSX user accounts -- one for personal use and one for
use at my work.

2. I want to share my virtual machine between these two user accounts, so I
followed instructions I found through a Google search which directed me to put
the .vmwarevm file into /users/shared

3. Now, my JAWS authorization is not remembered, nor is the right option key
acting as my insert key as I had set in Sharpkeys, although it does still
function as the capslock key, for some strange reason.

4. Sharpkeys 3.5 does not appear to work non-visually, so I am unable to set
the right option ke as my insert key again.

5. Not that this necessarily matters, as the VM will mirror files and folders
of the current OSX user, but I had created two Windows accounts as well -- one
for personal and one for work, just to sort of keep things similar.

I think I am complicating things, to be sure, and I had heard that JAWS will
think the authorization has been moved off the computer if the VM is moved, but
why would nothing I originally have set be remembered, such as my insert key
mapping through Sharpkeys? Also I did reauthorize JAWS last night, and it said
it was successful, but it is not remembered anymore, no matter what OSX account
or Windows account I am on.

Sometimes I just hate JAWS and Windows both, but I need to take advantage of
Microsoft Word and Excel.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Harry

That's a little annoying, since I like reading them a page at a time.

However, the PDF files read much much better -- thank goodness!

Reading PDF files in 10.8.4

2013-06-14 Thread Harry Hogue
hello,

Does anyone have experience reading PDF files in Previous with ML 10.8.4?
Since updating yesterday or the day before I can't read any content in any PDF
file -- I only hear "Text," and can't read further. Interestingly, text
navigation was supposed to have been improved.

Thanks for any thoughts. It might be a setting I need to change, as I'm
certain at least one or two of the PDF files I had on my computer I was able to
read, if badly, before this.

Thanks,

Basic Recording with Garage Band

2013-05-27 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

I need to make a simple and basic recording with Garage Band in mp3 format. I
need to be able to start recording, pause in the middle, resume the recording,
and of course play, rewind, and fast forward the recording to review it once it
is finished. What i the best way to do this with Garage Band?

Thanks,

VoiceOver Preferences and Sharing Programs Between Accounts

2013-05-26 Thread Harry Hogue
hello all,

I have a couple of unrelated questions.

First, does anyone know if it is possible to set voiceover preferences and then
send these preferences to someone else so they can then use them in their own
VoiceOver settings? I have a friend who uses VoiceOver, but lives half way
around the world, so it would be better to e-mail a settings file to him.
Although I could explain how to adjust settings for application menu short cuts
and so forth, it would be much quicker if I could set these myself and then
send him a file that he could simply put in a specific place. Then he could
use the preferences I have set, including application short uts, pronunciation
preferences, etc.

My other question has to do with my own computer. I have two accounts -- one
for personal use and another for professional uses. Is there a way to share my
virtual machine Windows between these two accounts? Right now when I go to the
other account and VMWare Fusion, it welcomes me to VMWare and aks me to eitehr
load a VM or install a VM, etc. If possible, I would like Windows on the VM on
the professional account to mirror the contents of my professional account,
meaning any files on my Desktop, etc. I can't imagine much I would need the VM
on my professional account for expect for maybe Excel, MS Word, and the like,
but I would like to have the option. So is there anyway of doing this without
completely reinstalling Windows?

Thanks,

Harry

Re: Online banking issue redux

This is very vague on details; if you provide us with information regarding
what settings your bank uses, what settings are typically recommended by users
of the site, browser version, cookies, java, etc. we may be able to provide
some more helpful ideas.

Hopefully it is just a small setting, and I also sometimes find clearing the
cache helps.

Learning Objective C Xcode Source Files and .app files

2013-05-21 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello everyone,

I am interested in learning to write programs on the Mac strictly through code
so I can avoid all of the UI difficulties with VoiceOver. I have no previous
experience with programming, but I know that this is possible. Is there
anywhere I could find all of the original Xcode source files/folder of files
for a .app program and the .ap program? That way I could play with the program
and then look at the elements that make up the program? Or, perhaps even more
helpful, is there some sort of guide on writing programs using Xcode without
the drag/drop UI, and explanations of doing everything programatically?

Thanks for any help.

Text Adventure Games on OSX

2013-05-20 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

Is anyone familiar with how to play text adventure games on OSX under Mountain
Lion? I am interested in the Desktop platform rather than the mobile side of
things, but either would work.

I looked on ifarchive.org and it looks like the interpreters are for much older
versions of the Mac, like 10.3 and earlier. I like text adventures and would
like to check them out again.

Thanks,

Harry

How did you discover these controls, by the way? I stumbled on them by mistake
because I pressed the wrong key.

And no, it has nothing to do with keeping you from skipping ads, as visually
you are able to skip ads after five seconds for the majority of the ads.

Skipping YouTube Ads and Subtitles in YouTube Videos

2013-05-19 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

Does anyone else have problems skipping YouTube ads when using youtube.com on
the Mac? It works great on IOS, but with the regular website on the Mac,
although I can go back in the video with J, play/pause with K, and fast forward
with L, I don't know how to skip an ad at the beginning. Is it because it is
embedded into a javascript or something like that?

Also, does anyone know how to view the subtitles or other text included with a
YouTube video?

Thanks,

Re: Any Accessible Database Programs for the Mac with VO

2013-05-17 Thread Harry Hogue
Brian,

You can arrow down through the list of records in the database, yes. There is
a bit of interacting to view the particular record, as you interact with a
scroll area, but it really isn't difficult. The idea of a database, if you
aren't familiar, is that you view a record at a time. Say you should want to
find information on a customer or contact who contacted you regarding a
particular issue, or you want to find anything related to a particular keyword,
you can do a search within a specific form for any records related to that
keyword or keywords. Databases work to organize information to keep all like
data together, which means that you have a standard form related to medical
visits, say. Then you create records using that form that tell about all of
the different medical visits you or others had. That way if you want to find
particular information on a medical visit you can search within that form. If
you are looking for a particular order number to see what customer it applies
to, you search for it and it quickly brings up that information. I have to say
I haven't used it very much yet, but from what I have used of it, I love it.

I hope this is helpful and isn't to confusing.

Thanks,

Harry

Re: Any Accessible Database Programs for the Mac with VO

2013-05-17 Thread Harry Hogue
Brian,

I love Tap Forms, a database software package which costs $24.99 in the Mac
Appstore. It works beautifully with VO, has an OSX and an IOS version, both
which must be purchased separately, although the OSX version is the one that
costs $24.99, while the IOS version is around $6.00. You are able to create
your own form fields for database info, including checkboxes, a notes field, a
website field, regular text input areas for name, address, etc. In addition,
you can also insert the date and time if you want to have the current date and
time automatically inserted. It comes with predesigned forms for you to view
and add records to so you can become comfortable with the program before you
begin creating your own database forms.

I hope this helps!

Harry

Re: Tap Forms

2013-05-06 Thread Harry Hogue
Nicholas,

I haven't tried the IOS app yet, and I have not tried the search feature yet,
as I am trying to decide what would be most useful for me to include in my own
form for client records. I have discovered that you record an audio note on
the IOS device and you can then play it on OSX, but you are not able to record
on the OSX app, unfortunately. I thought that'd be a pretty nice feature to
have.

I found this app when looking for alternative to Bento, which I have heard
mixed reviews about, mostly negative, from reviews of people complaining that
they keep removing useful features.

HTH,

Harry

Tap Forms

2013-05-04 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

I wanted to let you guys know about Tap Forms by Tap Zapp Software, Inc. It is
database software which runs on OSX and IOS, but each must be purchased
separately to allow cloud syncing. The OSX version costs $24.99 USD. It is
completely accessible from what I can tell, and it allows search rules for
quick searching and retrieval of records, although i have yet to try this
feature. You can both import and export CSV files from Numbers/Excel, as well
as import, export, and print records. You can include checkboxes, notes, and
pick lists in your forms from which you then create your records. It supports
file attachments as well. It seems like a wonderful product so far.

Thanks,

Harry

What applications do you use that give you some success? What really can cause
issues is when there are combo boxes to work with, as VoiceOver, by default,
says they are empty.

Re: Using the Mac for doing legal work

2013-04-11 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

If I may ask, how are you doing your work at present? Pages will be important,
together with creating relevant templates for drafts, motions, billable hours
perhaps, etc. Numbers would be useful for basic tracking of financial
information, although you would probably really want to use an account tool or
software. Unfortunately I am unable to recommend one, as I am wondering about
that myself.

As far as legal research, a solid understanding of VoiceOver skills, including
an ability to comfortably move about the Internet and access databases such as
Weslaw are important. Although many things may be located using Google,
websites with databases and resources specific to certain fields are always the
best source for finding specific and detailed information. You should be
comfortable accessing PDF files, also. Although many PDF files are somewhat
readable and many are not readable at all either because they are hand written
text or a scanned image, there are some ways to approach these issues. First,
PDF files open in an application called Preview. I recommend you set a short
cut key for the NewTextEditWindowContainingSelection command, which does the
following: After selecting all of the text with command A, press the short cut
key you have created, and the text in Preview or any other application will be
copied over to TextEdit. You will then be able to review all formatting and
easily move about the text. The problem with Preview is that you can only
really read by line, and that isn't even always the most reliable, so I
regularly use this command to read PDF files. If the PDF file is a scanned
image, you will need OCR (optical character recognition) software to access it.
Many people use AbbyyFineReader, but I don't know if this works for PDF files,
and I have never used it. There is also a program called iSky PDF Converter,
but again I have not had much experience with that tool. These are just a few
suggestions.

To prepare yourself, I would practice all of these skills to get yourself ready
for legal work. You will most likely be writing many drafts and things in your
law school career, and this will give you excellent practice. Anne Robertson
offers an excellent Pages course covering topics such as basic formatting, how
to write a business letter, design a template, and other basic and more
advanced word processing concepts that would be particularly useful to someone
doing legal work or any other kind of work involving heavy use of word
processing tools.

You will be fine; it is a matter of practicing, and practicing, and then
practicing some more. You won't learn it over night, but you will look up one
day and realize you have been doing things with ease you never imagined you
would be able to.

Best of luck, and please write back if any of us can be of any further help.

Re: Accessibility of iWork

2013-04-11 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

The main limitation with TextEdit is that it does not support the use of
headers and footers (for example for use with resumes, cover letters, academic
papers, memos, etc). TextEdit also does not allow for the use of templates as
far as I know, so you could not create your own template or use an existing
template.

TextEdit does allow you to observe all of the visual formatting such as bold,
underlining, etc, where as VoiceOver does not announce these features in Pages.
I regularly use both applications so as to take advantage of all features.

Regards,

Harry

PDF Converter

2013-04-06 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello, everyone,

I wanted to let you all know that I found a PDF converter called iSky PDF
Converter for Mac. I downloaded the free trial and it is accessible. They
have a paid version that supposedly had OCR and recognizes up to seventeen
separate languages. The free and paid versions convert into Word, TXT, HTML,
Excel, etc. and supposed preserve all of the original formatting. When I
converted a PDF file containing a table, though, and looked at the
errors-warnings contained, it said that cells that extended off the Page were
resized to all the same size and that a couple of fonts were not supported. I
wondered if anyone has used this product (either free or paid) and if so, what
are your thoughts? Do you like it? Hate it? Does it actually work as
advertised? It occurred to me that translators and others working with PDF
files have to work with PDF files and need them editable, and these often
include scanned images that need OCR technology. It got me to wondering what
the problem is with such converters for the blind and why they may not work for
our needs as well.

Thanks,

Harry

Inserting Scanned Signature

2013-04-03 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello, Everyone,

I need to insert my scanned signature into a Pages document. I scan the
signature using Image Capture, but I must have some setting incorrect, because
the person looking at the result says that the image still needs to be cropped
because it shows the entire page and my signature is barely visible. Note that
I set the width to two inches, just an approximation, and the height was
adjusted to automatically 2.66 inches, or something close to that. The
"Constrain Proportions" box is checked. For scanning, it was set to U.S.
Letter. I don't recall any other settings in particular.

Thanks,

Harry

is there a difference between CMD semicolon and CMD shift semicolon for spell
checking documents? I have never been clear on the difference.

Yuma,

I have found bringing the mouse with VO-CMD+F5 and then holding down the
control key while clicking the track pad works well.

Thanks,

Re: Getting Started.

2013-03-26 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

The one feature I have often seen in Windows clients and is not present in
Mail, although I dearly wish it were ,is the ability to schedule a message to
send later. This is useful if you are up at eight at night, three in the
morning, etc. and want to have an e-mail schedule to send at 8:30 a.m., or have
an e-mail send to someone when you know they will be in their office and likely
to see it, etc.

Thanks,

Harry

Re: Transfering Files.

2013-03-26 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

An SD card or a USB drive, or external drive -- any of these are without doubt
the easiest way. Since e-mail is usually either through Pop3 or, more common
these days by Imap, the e-mails are carried over in most cases. I had all of
my documents, etc. backed up to a thumb drive (also called a USB drive) and SD
card, so all I had to do was copy them over, and it was really very easy. The
msot difficult part way installing VMWare Fusion to run Windows and the
programs associated with the Windows side, which you probably won't have to
worry about.

Thanks,

Harry

You're welcome. We should probably keep the conversation in English since

Good luck with getting it registered. Mucha suerte.

Re: BestBuy Geek Squad.

2013-03-25 Thread Harry Hogue
Anita,

They will need your serial number, which you can find under the Apple menu, and
going to About this Mac. If you VO-Right arrow once until you hear VoiceOver
say "Version X" where "X" is your Version number, and VO-space twice, you will
then hear your serial number. You then have a couple of options. YOu can
either interact with the text and VO-shift-right arrow to move
character-by-character to read your serial number, or, the quicker way I found
when I am on the phone with them and they're asking for it is to turn on Quick
Nav with left and right arrows held down to gether, change the roter to
characters with either right or left arrow and up arrow together (this jsut
cycles forward or back), until you ehar characters. Then, to move by
characters, press up and down arrows. It all takes much longer to explain that
it does to do, which is true of msot accessibility approaches.

Thanks,

Harry

Anita,

I speak Spanish as well; sorry I neglected to answer the other part of your
question. Press CMD+VO+let and right arrows to move between the different
speech options such as Voice, Speech Rate, Volume, etc. When you get to Voice,
Press CMD+VO+down arrow, and depending on what voices you have installed you
can switch to any available. I personally prefer Paulina, but you may rather
use Javier, or one of the voices from Spain.

Espero que te sirva! Hope this helps!

Re: Language Options and Questions..

2013-03-24 Thread Harry Hogue
Anita,

To change language options, go into System Preferences by pressing VO-M,
VO-down arrow on Apple, and VO-down arrow until you hear "System Preferences."
Once in System Preferences, tab over until you hear "Language and Text."
Within this area, you can change the system language, which will change all of
the prompts used by VoiceOver. What language od you speak besides English?
Just so you know, you can also download many foreign language voices for
VoiceOver within VoieOver preferences (VO-F8). I can give you suggestiosn for
that if you need them, but changing your system langauge als oinstalls voices
for the language selected.

Thanks,

Harry

Re: a little trick i found on my new mac

2013-03-19 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

yes, it is common to need to "move" files/folders after copying them rather
than cutting them. You are still able to cut text and paste it where ever it
may be needed. I still don't understand the need to move instead of cutting
and pasting, and it accomplishes the same thing, but it is confusing for those
coming from a Windows environment.

Bullet points in Pages

2013-03-18 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

I have made a Pages document containing my resume, and instead of making the
bullet points manually, I realized I could select the text to be bulleted and
choose to have it be a bulleted list. I chose text bullets, and went on my
way, and this all works well. I verified the bullets were there by using New
TextEdit Window Containing Selection. Apparently, however, if text wraps to a
second line in a bulleted list, the second line of text is positioned under the
bullet rather than at the start of the text above, which is what is desirable,
most of the time. Should I select something for text indent under the
Inspector, or what might I may I be missing?

Thanks for any help,

Harry

Re: Track changes in pages.

2013-03-16 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

In my translation courses, my professor loves using this feature, as it permits
her to comment on small grammatical changes as well as comment on larger
structural changes to entire paragraphs, etc. I find it very difficult to
consistently find the changes in any kind of order, and I have no way of
knowing whether or not I have found all of them. Unfortunately, there also
appears no way to jump to a particular changed section. This is one of the
features that I truly wish they would make accessible to VoiceOver, and it
would come in so useful.

Thanks, and sorry I couldn't be of more help.

The best way to read detailed formatting like this is to use a Braille display.
Failing that, setting punctuation to "All" can also work well, or, failing

Re: key stroke question

Hello,

this toggles the multiple selection of items, such as in a list of documents

VO+K enters into the "Keyboard Help" mode, which will give you a brief

Re: changing document extensions in text edit

Hello,

What you are seeing is the option to save to a .docx format, I think.
Interestingly, Pages gives you the option of saving in .doc format, while
TextEdit gives you the option to save as .docx, but you cannot save as both in
either program, as far as I know. The .doc is the older file extension, and
the .docx is the more current file extension, but they are both MS Word formats.

Thanks,

Re: Web site development

Hi,

I really like Rapid Weaver, which costs around $60, I think. I find it very
accessible, and allows you to create a contact/feedback form, a blog, etc.

Thanks,

GPS Apps

2013-02-11 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello guys,

I have downloaded and installed both Navigon and Ariadne GPS for my iPhone 3gs.
Does anyone ahve tips for getting started with these tips? From threads I
started back in August, I know that Anne suggested setting up Navigon for
pedestrian mode with spoken instructions, but I don't know where to find that.
Also, if I want to virtually explore an area with Ariadne, what is the best way
to go about this? It seems to be possible to see what might be around, but
unless I am mistaken, it does not give you landmarks for businesses nearby your
chosen address unless you have favorites already listed in the application?

I suppose I'm a little bit confused how to have the two applications work
together, and help from more experienced users is apreciated.

All the best,

Harry

Track Changes in Pages

2013-02-10 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello everyone,

I know it is no possible to read track changes from someone else in order to
tell where they occur in the document, but I am required to submit a document
this week containing track changes, in which the professor will then accept my
changes and grade the final version of my document. Since this is a
translation class, she asks us to use proofreader's marks, which I don't think
are very practical. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for the best
way to go about showing my changes in a why that is least disruptive to the
reader and will still allow her to easily see my changes and apply them to the
final version using, if possible, the track changes feature?

Thanks for any help.

Chris,

Just so you know, cmd+opt+F will bring you to the search field in many
applications.

What I don't understand is the different between cmd+opt+F, cmd+F, and VO+F. I
know there are surely differences, but I don't know what they are for the life
of me.

Thanks.

Re: one more thing

2013-02-02 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

In that version of OSX, in order to select text on web pages, you need to go to
the area where you wish t begin selecting text, then press VO+return. Then,
press VO up and down arrows to move by line and VO+right and left arrows to
move by word. When you are finished, press VO+return to stop the selection
mode, then press CMD+C to copy the select text, then CMD+V to paste it
elsewhere.

I don't know if other selection type commands work beyond line and word; these
are the only ones I ever tried or cared about. All-in-all, I am really glad to
find the easier navigation of Mountain Lion.

I hope this helps!

Using VoiceOver with Google Drive

2013-01-30 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello, everyone,

I wondered about the best way to use Voiceover with Safari and Google Drive. I
heard/read that the best way is with the Google browser and an extension for
that browser? I need to collaborate with people on documents and be able to
read their edits, add to those documents, etc. I am also working with tables.
I am able to read the current file with no problem, though I am never sure how
I manage to get it open. When I do, however, I am able to read the additions
to the table of information (the file) with no problem. I do not know,
however, the best way to go about editing documents and making it the most
seamless process for me. if anyone has experience, I would appreciate a
response,e and thank you all very much in advance.

Re: Filling in tables in the docx format.

2013-01-24 Thread Harry Hogue
Annie,

Unfortunately, I know of no way to do this using either Pages or TextEdit. It
truly would be wonderful, however.

There is a way to extract information from a Word table and read it in
TextEdit, but I do not think it retains the original formatting, nor oes it
allow you to fill out the table, as it is plane text and simply presented in a
simpel format with each column separated by tabs, if I remember correctly.

Headers in Pages

2013-01-24 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

I want to edit header information in Pages. The document was a .doc file
originally. If I try to read the text with VoiceOver, I am unable, but if I
select New TextEdit Window Containing Selection, the text is shown to me. It
is from someone's resume they gave me to copy the format. I am wondering why
VoiceOver does not read the header text -- maybe because it considers it static
text, whatever that is? The rest of the document is perfectly useable,
otherwise.

Thanks for any help, guys. The text has one line centered, and on the next
line it has left justified, and then the e-mail justified to the right on the
same line… something like that, anyway. It is from someone who has sight and
was looked over by a person at their university, so I know it looks
professional.

Thanks,

Harry

Hello,

It calls it "a shade of dark olive green 1" instead of simply "a shade of dark

Do you think saying "copy paragraph style" from the other document would work?

I know how to do the point size, font, and alignment; what I don't know how to
do is the text color. This is in TextEdit, but I imagine it's the same for
Pages.

It does this for me as well in TextEdit, but I don't know what to change
either. Just thought you'd like to know it's not just you.

Re: Trackpad Question

2013-01-17 Thread Harry Hogue
Brian,

What I find helpful is to change the default "Speak mouse on object after
delay:" (it is worded something like that) to zero, so that there is no delay
between you touching the track pad and hearing Voiceover speak what you are
focused on. I find this most helpful when on the Internet and I wish to route
the mouse to the VO curser where I can then physically click in order to
activate an element that I cannot get at with VoiceOver, such as reading
"More:" on a review (this is most common).

As for opening a mail message, if you are using the track pad commander with
VoiceOver instead of the regular track pad as a sighted person would use it, I
am not exactly sure. If you double-tap it will activate the default action,
but that may or may not necessarily give you the desired result.

In all honesty, I find the track pad (not the track pad commander) most useful
for getting the idea of the visual layout of a particular program (although I
often neglect to use this because I frequently forget it's available to me). I
also find it helpful, as I said, for accessing things that I cannot otherwise
access using VoiceOver, such as activating links that, for whatever reason,
require a physical mouse click instead of a simulated one.

Thanks, and I hope this helps,

Harry

Re: Pages accessibility

2013-01-16 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

Paragraph and heading styles are completely doable and accessible. As for
headers and footers, you need to route the mouse pointer and click in order to
work within that particular area, but it represents no real issue. Tables,
unfortunately, are not currently supported, in that you cannot create a table
and insert information into it using Voiceover. At the present, Numbers is
your best bet for this.

I used to think that templates are completely useless. However, I now love
them, since they represent pre-designed formatted documents ready for use.
Just the other day I used the "Elegant Fax" template coversheet to accompany
some faxed material, and all I needed to do was to have my fiancé show me where
to affix my signature at the bottom of the cover page. it was simple yet
professional. There was no need to create such things from scratch.

Thanks,
Harry

Thank you so much -- this is very helpful, and I will use this. I have been

Re: getting to address bar in Safari

Another way you could possibly do it is to press VO-shift-U to hear the address
of the current link, then press VO-shift-C to copy the last spoken phrase to
the clipboard. This might be slightly quicker than going to "copy link."

 Hi folks.

As far as I know, there are many here in this group who are helping
blind people switching from Windows to Mac.
Do you have any strategies to help them get fast into the VoiceOver
commands, and how they can "distance" them selves from the Windows
platform, and learn Mac the best way there is?
For example, is the best way to first learn to use VoiceOver with the
QuickKeys, or the hard way with so many keys pressed at once some
 times?
What about what to learn first, do you learn them a piece of software
(such as Mail or Safari) or how the OS and how VoiceOver interacts
with it before going into apps?

All comments on this is really welcome.

 Best regards David

Brian, sorry I never got back to you about Rapid Weaver. yes, having someone

Re: Skype commands

2013-01-12 Thread Harry Hogue
Good afternoon,
When you are signed into Skype, press VO-J to jump to the first table, which
contains "Skype Home," "Contacts," etc. Simply arrow to "Contacts," for
example, then you can press VO-J and it will jump you to your contacts table
where you can gain simply arrow up and down through your list of contacts. I
would suggest changing the view to list, under the "View" menu.

To end a call, press CMD-shift-H. It is also helpful to turn curser tracking
off once you are in the chat window area, so you can type a reply to someone
while keeping your place in the window. This is particularly useful if you are
reading a long message from someone and wish to make reference to specific
points and need to refer back to that person's message from time-to-time. Just
don't forget to turn your curser tracking back on when you're finished;
otherwise, you'll find some odd VoiceOver behavior. To turn curser tracking on
and off, press VO-shift-F3. it is a toggle.

As far as shortcut key commands, many of these will be found in the menus
themselves. Press VO-M, right arrow through the menu options, and down arrow
to open and explore a particular menu item. I am not the most familiar with
assigning custom shortcuts to commands that do not have a default command, but
this is possible.

Harry

Re: Installing Skype

2013-01-12 Thread Harry Hogue
Once you have done this, if ou see something on your Desktop called "Skype,
volume," you can press VO-shift-M on it, and go down to "Eject" and press
return. This will then allow you to delete the .dmg file while keeping the
Skype.app file in your Applications folder.

This is the same process for installing other applications with .dmg files.

Hope htis is helpful.

Rich Text Editors

2013-01-12 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello, guys,
I use an interface with my university called eCollege. Last quarter their text
edit area for making posts was accessible enough. This quarter, however, it
doesn't work at all. VoiceOver calls it a "Rich text editor with
RadeEntryText," and I'm not sure what that means. Searching online reveals
that people over at Applevis have experienced some similar issues, apparently,
accessing those posting features for that site when the rich text editor was
used. the eCollege folks tell me that there is no way to simplify the
interface and that the visual editor has to be used. What really sucks is that
it works with JAWS on the Windows side of things, no problem. Over all,
VoiceOver works much more smoothly with eCollege because it has several frames
and I love the way Voiceover lets me choose whether or not I want to read the
content of a frame by interacting with it, instead of me having to go into a
special frames mode.

All in all, I wondered if anyone had come up with a solution to this issue?
According to the tech support folks, it isn't even possible for the instructor
of the course to change the interface, and since it is perfectly accessible
with JAWS, they're less likely to see it as an issue that needs immediate
reworking. I am able to paste into the edit area, but I cannot read back any of
what I have typed, except for back spacing. If I have a numbered list of items
with explanations, the editor thinks I want to start numbering each line, and
the only way I fixed it was to go into the Windows side, use JAWS, and edit it
out.

I appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks,
Harry

Hello,

I use this command within skype. It lets me jump to the first table where I
press down arrow to get to contacts, then press VO-J again which takes me to
the contact list where all I need do is arrow up and down to see the contacts.
Much quicker than all the interacting and uninteracting.

Re: How to add apps to the doc and searching on google with safari?

2013-01-10 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

There are no dumb questions if you don't ask them. You won't know until you do
ask. To add an app to the Dock, press cmd+shift+T when you are focused on the
name of the app.

As for Google and Safari, make sure you are clicking on the link and not the
"result button." I'm not sure what that button does, but as far as I know that
does not get you where you want to be. search results will have the name of
the page as their title, and it will be a link which you can press VO-space
onto access.

I hope this is helpful,

Harry

Adobe Connect

2013-01-04 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,
is anyone familiar with Adobe Connect, by chance? An instructor in one of my
classes is using it for weekly meetings, and I was wondering about its
accessibility. Given that it is Adobe, I'm not sure. It allows users to both
text chat and voice chat, and also allows the presenter to share his or her
screen so that users, such as me, are able to see the screen; the presenter
also has the option of showing PowerPoint presentations and the like. I wasn't
able to find any direct information about accessibility on the website; only
references to problems logging in, and the like.

Thanks,

Harry

Re: Web Design on a mac or virtual machine

2012-12-29 Thread Harry Hogue
Brian,
The one time I tried designing my own site for teaching/providing ESL/editing
services, I used Rapid Weaver. I was able to create a blog that had a comments
section, and the web host I used had plugins that let me put in polls, etc. I
used a pre-designed template for the overall design o my site that worked
really well with my theme, and found it very easy t create things like
registration pages, member-only areas, and a Paypal link for processing
payments. Of course these things took getting used to, and it was very
frustrating at times, but overall, looking back, Rapid Weaver made the process
incredibly easy. I believe the program is around $50, but I could be wrong
about that. I have taken my site off of the paid hosting that allowed my PHP
scripts (that I obtained from online sources) to work, so visiting my site
wouldn't do any good, I guess. But I was really impressed to see the way that
Rapid Weaver let me, as someone new to web design and new to the program,
create a website that actually looked professional. You just have a blank area
like a word processing window where you can bold, but bullet points, different
colors, or anything else you may need to format your text. This then becomes
the contents of your page.

I hope this helps.

Re: apple script questions.

2012-12-28 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

You are asking a number of very specific questions with a big of a vague
description. This is an advanced topic that folks here may or may not have
experience with. I am not familiar with this area myself, but I would suggest
reading about Applescript writing, practice writing a few small Applescripts to
play with the code structure, and see how the process works. Rather than
focusing on the particulars of precisely what you want your script to do, maybe
you create it so it generally does what you want it to. Later, when you're
more comfortable with scripting, you can work on customizing and perfecting the
script. It all comes in steps. I am studying up on C programming right now in
preparation for learning more about Objective C, and it is the same kind of
process. Foundations have to be built first, which let you go on to think of
more and more creative uses for a general skill set. At the end of the day,
knowing how to do a specific operation only lets you do that specific
operation, but knowledge of general and basic concepts lets you branch out and
explore more widely.

I hope this helps! I've never even thought of looking into Applescripting, but
I wish you all the best with it.

Hello all, I rarely see any mention of Spotlight search even in some very
good podcasts. I find Spotlight one of the most useful features since
moving to the Mac. I don't go to the dock that often I type the program I
wish to run and that I find is much quicker. Just was wondering what
 others thought.

Programming OSX Applications

2012-12-22 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello, guys,

First, I am completely new to programming, and I've heard that it is best to
start with learning C programming and then move to Objective C which is what is
used for OSX and IOS. I have downloaded Xcode 4.5.2, I think it is, and was
wondering if there are any general suggestions for using it with VoiceOver.
Since much of the interface is dragging and dropping, my instinct says that
coding instead would be the more logical, if time-consuming choice. In this
way, the programmer would have a better idea of exactly where on the screen
things appear, etc.

Since I am completely new to programming, I would like to get started in a way
that is helpful. I have looked at C programming tutorials, but when I try and
test the command line tool template program @HelloWorld,@ I get the message,
@Build Succeeded@ but nothing else from VoiceOver. Something tells me the
message appeared and then went away, as it is supposed to, but VoiceOver never
read it. For purposes of playing with code and testing my code, how should I
approach this_ is there a certain file(s) I should be inputting code into as I
read tutorials online, and a certain way to test them or a place to test them
with VoiceOver so they will be read by VoiceOver_

Again, I am just wanting to play around with the basics, here. it fascinates
me. I have no plans for creating much of anything -- programming takes years
and years of practice, and, more importantly, errors and learning how to redo
code and debugging to get it right.

Thanks for any pointers, guys.

Harry

Re: subscribing to podcasts in iTunes

2012-12-22 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

When you click on the name of the podcast, which will be a link, if you find a
button called @Actions,@ just before that it will give the price, or will say
$0.00 if it is free. This is what you want to VO-Space bar on and it will say,
@Are you sure you want to subscribe to…@ and will give the name of the podcast.

I hope this helps!

Re: Off-topic: Accessible all-in-one printer/fax/scanner

2012-12-19 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi Wayne,

Looking on Amazon, one of the reviews said that you cannot print the moment any
of the cartridges run out of ink, even if you're only printing in black. I do
not understand why printer manufacturers do this except for profit. I guess
maybe that's enough. Does anyone know of a printer/fax/scanner combination
that doesn't have this restriction? Printers used to be much simpler in the
old days.

Thanks,

Harry
