Re: question to ask all of all of you
Becky, I know of two ways in which you can save files in other formats so others can read it. when ready to save, you can press Command+Shift+s and you can arrow through to save in Word format. You can also call up menu bar in Pages, navigate to "file" then arrow down to "Export." When you choose Export you'll be given 5 choices of formats in which you save your file. PDF, RTF, Word, Plain Text, and EPub. Select which one you want then select "next" I believe is the option which takes you to another page to save in whichever name you wish to give your file. I believe that is correct. If not, someone on this list can correct me if I've given inaccurate or incomplete instructions. I hope that helps. Voiceover and Training Peaks
Hi Listers, I was wondering if any users of Voiceovers have successfully used the Training Peaks web site to log your workouts, meals, and receive coaching? A friend who is a pro triathlete/coach suggested I set up a free account, which I did. Prior to registering, I played with the site activating various links to plans, athletes, coaches, articles, blog, and support. all seemed accessible with VO. I had difficulty signing up but that was more on my end and not VO inaccessibility. I received e-mail confirmation and followed instructions to find my friend's group plans, and seemed to be okay until I went back to log into the site later on which is when I discovered that upon logging in, I am not able to access my profile or training plans. Instead I'm taken to a site where VO tells me that the html is empty. The only other information which VO reads is to tell me the version of Training Peaks. I went through the links to reach someone at TP support and managed to fill out all required information until the very last step which was a visual captcha. there was an option for an audio captcha, but each time I entered what I heard, I was told what I entered was incorrect. I did notice a separate form, which I filled out, if one is having trouble with the captchas to inform TP staff. I have not heard back. I did find a Training Peaks mobile site, but it actually seemed more complicated than the TP main site. There is a TP app for the iPhone which I've not yet tried but that might be my next attempt if I can't resolve this issue. Hoping if someone has successfully used the site, you can tell me what I might be doing wrong which will enable me to access the TP information I need. Thank you. Re: Facebook Chat with VoiceOver
Harry, I can't give any suggestion on FB or chat clients however, I use Voiceover exclusively with FB chat on the main site and it works well. It helps that each time someone starts a chat with you, you'll receive an audio signal. If you move VO focus away from the FB chat area and you're reading or writing something at a different part of the site, you'll always receive said audio cue letting you know person has responded to your chat message or that someone has begun a new chat with you. For the most part, friends start chats with me. It use to be easier to start chats prior to about a year ago when there was a list of every person online at the time. Each link was labeled a friend's name and you could simply clicked to activate any link you wanted within the list and a new chat window would open up right there with an option just below, I seem to recall, for when you wish to close the window. Nowadays, I still see the list of links labels Friends On Chat however to whom each link corresponds is not labeled. However, just before the list begins, there is a link which reads Show Sidebar. If you activate that link and move VO to the bottom of the FB page, there you can find a list of links with your friends who are online or whether they are idol but still logged in. You can move through this clearly labeled list and pick the friend with whom you wish to chat. When you click on the name, a new chat window opens and you can begin to chat. I hope that helps should you wish to chat on the main FB site with Voiceover. Re: word count
Lisette, The only way I've found to get a word count for my Text Edit documents is by writing and saving in Text Edit, but then when I wish to get a word count, I open that same document in Pages, navigate the Inspector until I see where it says Word Count and get my count there. Re: Is Facebook Now Completely Broken
Brian, Rest assured, you are not the only one experiencing this. I started having this issue yesterday. I actually wondered if it was because I hadn't upgraded to ML. I used Facebook on a PC for a very short time years ago and I seem to remember the combo edit boxes then, but I don't remember the combo edit boxes rendering the field inaccessible to the screen reader I used then. As Donna, mentioned, I did find the edit box containing the information I typed either as my status update or as a comment to a friend's post. It does take some navigating, but I also have been using the item chooser to get me to that box quicker. I don't know how others are dealing with it, but I find that the accessible edit box appears at the bottom of the FB page for me and I use VO+FN+right arrow to get me there. I will keep playing to find any possible work-arounds. If it continues, I will e-mail FB. As others point out, they don't always respond, but I find that at 66% of the time I have submitted an issue, they do get back to me and do seem to try to fix the issue. I'll see over the next few days as I have also found that when a problem of inaccessibility arises, it takes a few days or even weeks, but it does get fix. At least, it does for me. Re: Where in Hades did my notifications go on Facebook?
Christine, As Teresa pointed out, on the main Facebook site, three numbers appear which notify a user if one has new messages, notifications, and friend requests. VO+space on these numbers makes the information associated with said number appear. Also, a few weeks ago the Facebook Team announced that in order to "save users' in box" people would no longer receive e-mail notifications to the same extent they had been receiving them. Instead, Facebook would send e-mail notifications only if it determined it was important based on how many "likes" or "comments" a status or post received. However, FB allows one to change this under account setting preferences if one wishes to continue receiving e-mail notifications on every single thing which is what I do. I hope that helps. Re: Facebook
Jennifer, I just wanted to chime in that the regular Facebook site is what I use. A majority of what one wishes to accomplish is accessible on the site. I have used the mobile site. From time to time, I'll use a feature or two on there, but I much rather use the main site. You can post links, update status, comment on your own status, comment on others' updates, or use different aps. There are a few times where FB Accessilibty responded promptly and assisted me with any issues quickly, but other times where they did not respond yet the issue was eventually resolved by the team. Re: Facebook accessibility using safari on mac os10 lion
Venkatesh, About ten days ago, Facebook rolled out a new looking home/newsfeed page where recent news and top news are now part of one stream. You can now also see up to the second updates on what friends are commenting/posting in a new ticker. A while back, FB replaced the friend request, messages, and notifications list with just numbers which are located above the search edit field. >From what FB blog states, as part of the new home page/newsfeed design, one's >friend requests are now hidden within a list which doesn't appear on the home >page. I have not yet discovered how to locate it. There is a list on FB home page which contains update status, add photo, and ask question. When you activate the clickable for update status, the "What's On Your Mind" edit box then appears so you can update status. FB chat still seems to be accessible but since the new layout intorduction, FB now combines your chat and your messages together. I hope that helps a bit. Donwloading a demo of an application
Dear Group, After speaking to a couple representatives for a couple applications I'm interested in buying but wanting to make sure they'll be accessible with VO, I decided to download the demo versions of these applications. The first application I tried has now appeared in my downloads. I pressed VO+shift+m to open it. I was told upon opening it, the application would either begin the download or have instructions for me to do so. Upon pressing open, VO told me there was a disc image browser with three choices. application alias, the ap name, and extras folder. Can someone walk me through the next steps. I assume this means the download has not been complete. Besides being in the downloads folder, the ap is sitting on my desktop and not in my applications folder. Is the applications folder ultimately where it needs to be for me to know that the ap download is complete and I can use the ap to test it out? I'm sorry if these are basic questions. I've never successfully downloaded aps without sighted assistance. In fact, in my previous attempts to download applications to test out, this is the furthest in the process that I've reached without being completely frustrated. I'm not tech savvy at all. So I hope someone can help. List of files in Pages and Textedit no longer appearing alphabetically
Greetings listers, I'm so use to my list of files in Pages and TextEdit appearing in alphabetical order that I am a bit concerned what I may have done that as of today, I noticed files, while still in list view, are not in alphabetical order. The alphabetical order enables me to move through quickly through my files especially when I have several drafts of a document which are then listed all in a row together, but now they are scattered throughout the list. Again, I am not sure what to do to undo this so my files can go back to being listed in alphabetical order so I hope someone can help me. I did notice when I pressed command+shift+o to view my list of documents, they were listed in alphabetical order but when opening Pages and Text Edit they are not. Re: an accessible twitter client for mac and Iphone
Thank you Ricardo, I'll keep monitoring what people say on this list and I may end up trying out one or more of these Twitter clients just to experience them. For now, I'll simply keep using the regular site as I noticed some of the concerns with tweeting, replying, DM, time stamps, or who tweeted are not a problem for me. VO seems to read all that out to me as it is, but I'm sure as I continue to explore the Twitter site, I'll run into something. thankfully, a year and a half into my Twitter experience, I haven't had any glaring major issues. I've read often bout the different Twitter clients as listed in this thread. Because I'm not the most tech savvy, I am wondering how do these Twitter clients work and how would I, someone who relies 100% on Voiceover, benefit from using these clients? Would it make using the regular Twitter site more accessible? VO+main Facebook accessibility Re: Having trouble sharing a link on FB
Hi Listers, Has anyone else noticed that since about a month ago or around the time FB unveiled their new profile option, posting status updates or on friends wall using the main FB seems easier as VO now recognizes and reads the labels of the edit boxes such as "What's On Your Mind" and "Write Something" For the longest time VO would only read that there was an edit box but not the label. Other listers did previously offer suggestion such as turning curser tracking off and using item chooser both of which could spot the labels and place the user in the proper edit box, but using VO and the arrow keys didn't always work to even find the edit boxes at times. Now, VO reads seemingly all labels and has no difficulty locating the edit box. For those interested on the main FB sitethere is a "heading level 2" which VO reads to me followed by a share button. If you VO+right arrow once, you'll hear VO read that there is a list containing four items. They are "status", "photo", "link", "video" Pressing VO+space bar on "status" automatically brings up "What's on your mind edit box" Type your status and if you wish, paste a url to a link, you can then preview hw the link will look to your friends after you post it. VO will read the edit box as "Say something About The Link" If you wish to comment then you can. If you're like me and you type your remarks prior to pasting in the url then you simply VO+right arrow twice to the share button, press VO+space bar and your status is updated. On a friend's wall you will see the list of four items, but the "status" option is replaced by one which reads "post." VO+space bar on that and you are put into an edit box which reads "Write Something." Take the same steps and post on your friend's wall. Little by little I've been noticing some small accessibility improvements on FB main site as slowly more items on the sight can now be recognized by VO. Re: Undownloaded Podcasts
Thank you so much Marc, I did what you suggested and it worked perfectly! Now I can pull up the contextual menu and download undownloaded epsidoes of the podcasts. Thank you again to all who provided input with this topic as well. Just for clarification, can someone explain why in a podcast such as this daily radio show are the hours divided into separate tracks and usually, of the five separate tracks, one or only two are downloaded then one has to go through the process of downloading the rest? I'm simply asking because I'm curious and not because I'm inconvenienced. So long as a list such as this one exists, there will always be a place to get the desired answers. Thank you Anne, Jude, and Jonathan, I made sure to check the setting and it is set to download most recent episode. Undownloaded Podcasts
Greeting Mac Visionaries Family, A while back, I subscribed to the Maccessibility podcast. At the time, I was not too confident with my way around my new Mac so I had sighted assistance. More recently, I've been playing around with subscribing to different podcasts through iTunes. On Monday evening, I subscribed to a podcast called Bores And Bernstein out of an all sports radio station in Chicago. It is a daily five hour program so each podcast is broken up into five separate one hour tracks. I noticed that iTunes downloaded Monday afternoon show, but I was only able to play two of the tracks as the other three were labelled "undownloaded." The first and fifth hour were fine, but the middle three were not. In the table listing the tracks, I noticed each hour from the five shows broadcasted last week appeared, but every single one was labelled "undownloaded." I kept refreshing thinking that would do it. I read over iTunes Help but was not able to find out how do I download the other tracks. Is it a setting issue? What am I suppose to do to ensure each track is downloaded? Thank you all! Re: playing videos in facebook
Colin, I tried the list of FB shortcuts you posted and the only one which works consistently is control+2 which takes me from the home page of my newsfeed to my profile page. Then control+1 I believe to go back. I noticed the other shortcuts like going to one's in box, friends or notifications does not work if you're on a random spot on the FB page but if you happen to be on the link labeled messages then press the shortcut while on said link you will get the in box of messages. Same for the friends link and the notifications. If I'm on the links and press the shortcut it gives me the corresponding message. I thought Sarah suggestion of VO+command+f5 might work. Sorry to hear you and Laura were not successful with that. Although Laura apparently was able to play the video. I am glad you figured it out Laura. If I ever encounter another way to play videos I'll make sure to post it in the hope it helps. Re: playing videos in facebook
Hi Laura, I am not sure if anyone answered this but I found it depends on the source of the video for me. If it is a youtube video they are sharing, I simply press either VO+space or enter on the link which contains the title and the video begins to play almost immediately if not shortly after. I have noticed that some times, friends post an HD video such as a friend who was in a short film and when I pressed VO+space on the link, I was redirected to a different page on FB. The director of the film originally posted the video and when I clicked on the link the new page contained a heading stating videos posted by that individual. I simply worked down to the one of my friend and when I did, there were two options. One link was titled "play video in regular quality" and the other link was "play video in HD" When I activated the first link, I waited about ten seconds and the movie began to play. For the most part when a friend, posts an HD video, these are the steps I take. Maybe someone has a simpler way to play videos. Re: inserting an external link using fb mobil and safari
Sarah, Sorry I can not be more help. I am interested if others have this problem and how they get around it since I have this problem from time to time too only not on FB, but on my blog. Readers have asked me to make links which appear on my blog active. Apparently, when I type the url as part of my entry, it shows up as text. When I cut and paste the url from elsewhere, most of the time it appears as a link on which readers can then click to activate. I have not figured out how to always ensure the url is always a link which can be activated. Re: inserting an external link using fb mobil and safari
Sarah, I've always found that when I use the mobile FB site pasting the url works just fine, but what happens when you try it? The only issues I had with the mobile site is that when I would cut and paste a url to a specific entry for my Sexy Isra Experience blog, a security check would pop up and ask me to type the words in the box, but wouldn't offer an audio alternative. I once had a sighted person try to fill it in for me, but he couldn't either. The main FB site will also do this to me from time to time but with the audio alternative I always manage it just fine. Otherwise, pasting url works fine. I've found that I can use the share functionality on some sites to post to FB, but when I press this option on a site, it seems to always take me to the main FB site. I use the main FB site all the time so it's not a problem but if you're not comfortable with it, I do not know if this would be an option for you. Re: having mail issues with apple mail: my account won't go online at all
Hi Sarah, While I can not speak for anyone else, I just wanted to let you know that I received this message you sent about your mail issue but I did not receive the first one you apparently sent out. I had the same problems apparently back in November of last year, but honestly I didn't know enough to fix the problem. I became so frustrated with it that I just gave up and went to bed. Besides unable to take accounts online I started getting a message from Mail telling me to type my password over and over again. Since I bought my Mac, I've never had that prompt before. Now since November, I can not send messages until I type my password. Oh and in my case, by the morning, Mail was working again. As I wrote previously, I am not sure how it was fixed. I wish I could be more help. sorry. Sexy Isra Israel Antonio www.sexyisra.blogspot.com www.twitter.com/sexyisra www.israelantonio.com On Aug 9, 2010, at 12:55 PM, sarah alawami wrote: > Hello to all. Re: Facebook and Safari 5?
Mike If you wish to contact Facebook, I found it best to click on the help center link on any page and find a link on that new page called accessibility. You can fill out a form which includes providing your name, email, and if you use a screen reader you are asked to indicate which one, then type an email. I have previously received an automated response immediately which is then followed by an apparent live person usually within a day. Some times within hours but normally a day. The issue involving VO previously being able to locate the "What's On Your Mind" edit box for me only to suddenly stop recognizing it until I tried some of the suggestions offered by others on this list is an issue FB accessibility has yet to solve but other minor issues I have had were usually solved over time. Hi Donna I press VO+command+f4 to move keyboard focus. I was initially simply turning curser tracking off but nothing was happening then I tried moving keyboard focus and realized I could then type in the edit box. Donna, I noticed that as well as I tried logging on to the mobile FB site. I rarely use it but just having the option was nice. Ricardo's suggestion about turning curser tracking off to find the "What's On Your Mind" edit box works like a charm! Once there, I move keyboard focus there and type away. VO doesn't speak though but after I am done I am able to listen to what I typed. I have not yet figured out how to correct typos manually. Re: using facebook with safari
I turned off curser tracking per Ricardo's suggestion I was able to successfully go to the comment link mouse click on it with VO+shift+space. This will come in handy when I want to comment on someone's post if they post bad/unfortunate news. If no one has previously comment on their post, I have to press the "like" link to make the comment edit box appear and I always feel a little strange "liking" their status update if they're posting their mother died or their kid is in the hospital so this ability to comment the way Ricardo suggest will be useful. When curser tracking is off, I find that VO always finds and read the "what's on your mind" edit box and the "write something" edit box on someone's wall but when I try to type, VO does not speak what I type and when I check, nothing has been typed in the edit box. If I interact, all I get is the label spelled out. So, am I missing a final step to enable me to type in the edit box? BTW, since I didn't have any success with typing status update and I'm already in the edit box to type, I experimented with turning curser tracking back on hoping I can then type a status or on someone's wall but instead, VO simply says "html content" and the edit box is gone. Re: using facebook with safari
Hi Donna I've not played with Facebook on a PC since June 2009. When I switched to the Mac I wanted to make a clean break from Windows so when given the option I declined to have a part of my Mac set up with Windows as many people do. My reasoning was I wanted to completely leave the trojen horses and viruses which almost wiped out my decades worth of screenplays, theatre pieces, stories behind. Although, now I read the listeres here and I wonder if I should have done as so many do. Is it too late to put Windows on my Mac? Although I don't miss the headaches of worrying about updating my virus protection, I kind of do miss some aspects of windows. I agree with Donna. The time I logged on to Facebook when I had my PC, I could always update status and/or post on friends' walls with ease. At the time I used Window-Eyes screen reader and it was easy to use FB main page to update status. Now, there were other aspects of FB such as chat, applications, and even the share function I could never figure out. I had a difficult time changing my profile info too. I always had to get sighted help and they said they noticed, the screen reader would even speak labels, links, or items that weren't even on the page. One friend said "I can see the screen while listening to the speech and I'm confused. How do you deal with this?" Outside of the updating status or writing on walls, I have found that when using my iMac and Voiceover, the main FB site seems "clearer" and not as confusing as when using Window-Eyes. I also find I have access to many more things on FB now that I use VO and my Mac. Even posting comments to my friends' updates was a major confusing chore on the PC but with Mac, my only early struggles came when adjusting to this new concept of when to interact and when not. In fact, in general, when using my PC, I could NEVER access any online forms on any site successfully. Maybe it was just my inability to grasp how to do it but with VO, I find that I am able to fill out forms and register for events, races, gatherings much easier. In situations like this, I wish I was more tech savvy or knowledgeable about computers, applications, and other aspects to provide better insight. Re: using facebook with safari
Hi Donna There are two ways I've stumbled into the edit box. 1. On the FB main page where it has a link then a number which is the number of notifications you have, I VO+space on the notification link so I can read list of notifications. I came across one stating "Janes Smith commented on your status" so I pressed VO+space on the status link to go read her comment. After doing so, instead of pressing the link "home" I pressed command+left bracket. Remembering there was something else I wanted to read on my wall, I quickly pressed command+right bracket to move forward. I was amused by this for no apparent reason so I began pressing them several times consecutively. Forward back forward back. When I finally stopped, I was on the main FB site ready to resume reading friends' updates when I pressed VO+right arrow to make my way down the page and found Voiceover saying the following, "what's on your mind edit box" Sure enough, I was in the box and tested it by updating my status and it worked! So now every so often, I will be on the main FB site and activate the link to my profile. Once on my profile page, I press command+left bracket then quickly command+right bracket so that I keep going back and forth several times then I stop at the main FB site and some times, VO then reads the edit box and it's accompanying label. NOTE: It is a bit strange and it does some times cause VO to turn off then turn right back on. 2. The other option is on the FB main site when reading friends' updates, there is a heading "friends online" followed by a heading "newsfeed" I arrow over to the two options which read top news and most recent. I press VO+space on "most recent" then VO+right arrow twice and hear "what's on your mind" VO only reads the label but doesn't put me in the edit box so I press command+r to reload the page. When the page reloads, I quickly move to the newsfeed heading and VO+right arrow once and I hear "what's on your mind edit box" and I can type in my status. NOTE: Again, this doesn't always work and when it does, I usually have anywhere between 30 seconds up to three minutes before mysteriously, access to the edit box is no longer possible. Haven't figured that part out. I hope that helps Donna. If there is another way to get access to the edit box on the main FB site, I hope someone shares it because the fact that these work even if not all the time leads me to believe we're not all that far away from someone figuring it out. I did use FB main site for three months after buying my IMac and was able to use the edit box to always update my status. The only problem was VO would never read the label "what's on your mind" It would only say "edit box" but I knew I was in the right place because when I used my PC, edit box label was read by Window-Eyes and having learned the layout, I knew that was indeed the proper edit box to update my status. Now, with these two "out of the box" methods I've been using, VO does read the label so again, I know we're close. I can feel it!! Re: using facebook with safari
Ronit, I use the main site. Yes, I do some times update status via the mobile site as well as through my twitter account which I have set to also update FB status. Other than updating status or writing on walls, I seem to navigate well on the main site able to "like" a friend's status or comment on his/her updates. I can seemingly locate all other edit boxes on the newsfeed, my profile, or any changes I try to make to my profile, preferences, or settings. I just figured out through trial and error as well as several friends constantly sending me IMs how to use the FB chat on the main site. Because of this list, I seriously considered download a third party ap for accessability purposes but if I can do it through the FB chat successfully then I will stick with that for now. As for FB aps, I don't play any games on FB other than once in a while accepting/sending gifts in Mofia Wars but for the most part I only use the Twitter ap within FB and the "send a drink" and "send a hug" aps and they all work just fine as I naviagte the tables, edit boxes, or controls. Oh and I did recently stumble upon a way where I can get the "what's on your mind" edit box to appear and update my status on the main FB site but it is kind of hit or miss only working about 40 percent of the time but that's better than nothing I guess. Re: using facebook with safari
When I was considering joining Facebook a year ago, I read various online articles in the hopes of finding out whether FB was screen reader friendly and/or to see what others who use screen readers have experienced in terms of accessibility. While I don't recall the specifics, I remember reading letters and forum discussions at the American Foundation For The Blind who along with a sixteen year old high school student, Michelle was working with the director of development, Jeff(I believe) for Facebook in attempting to making the site accessible to the blind/visually impaired. Although FB's frequent changes may suggest otherwise, the company seems open to helping bridge the accessibility gap so has anyone approached them about complying to web standards and showing how this would benefit a segment of the population they apparently seem willing to accommodate? Re: using Facebook on the Mac?
Hi Donna, I will say up front, I am not computer savvy at all. I joined Facebook after my friends insisted and have been on since March of this year and after buying an IMac in June, I've found FB to be much more enjoyable and accessible for the most part. My only major problem started in September when for no apparent reason, VO would not recognize the edit box labeled "what's on your mind" Prior to that September, Monday afternoon I could post my status updates on the main FB page without a problem. To go around that, I started using m.facebook.com but do much more prefer the main FB site. While I appreciate the mobile site and some of the other options such as FB lite, I find myself more lost when using those as oppose to the main www.facebook.com site. I find I can respond to friends' statuses, comment, like their updates, check in box, view and share links, activate every link and have recently begun playing with various applications/games on FB and find that with enough time spent playing around with them I can access over 97% of FB related material without having to resort to different tricks or adjustments to VO settings. P.S. In recent weeks, I've noticed that VO is recognizing the edit box "what's on your mind" for a bit before resorting to skipping over it completely again so it makes me think this has to be a resolvable issue. Again, I didn't have this probably for a few months after setting up FB account. I also found that I can update my FB status through an ap when using my Twitter account If there is any specific issue you're having I will do my best to explain how I do it, if you need. Thank you for this Donna! I've gotten into the habit of remembering the sender's name or subject of a specific email near the bottom of a long list of emails so I just type a few letters and VO takes me there. Hi Donna, 1. To hear text attributes, control + option + t If in Text Edit, you'll here the size, font family name, and whether the line is aligned left right or center 2. command + t should bring up font choices where you can pick which font family, the size, and I can't recall what other choices. Adium for Twitter andresources for just learning computers
Hi list!! I've been reading the posts on this list relating to Twitter clients such as; Adium. I'm planning to set up a Twitter account. 1. What is Adium? 2. I've read it makes Twitter, Facebook Chat, and other IM softwares more accessible. Therefore, should I install Adium prior to setting up Twitter account? I've reread some of the list members' previous discussion on this topic as well as articles on Wikipedia, CNET, and elsewhere, but admittedly, I am not well versed in tech vocabulary. For many years, my knowledge about computers, software, and the actions performed using computers was only very basic...enough to open, use, save, word processing documents or emails. As a client of state services, I would only learn whatever a tech person could teach me for the 1 or 2 hours the state was willing to pay. So, the sessions never went beyond very remedial material. So, I also welcome any suggestions on resources out there. For lack of a better term, if there is a "Computers For Dummies" or sites, books, podcasts so that I may continue to be educated. I know having this Mac, there is a world of possibilities for me out there. I've probably only scratched the surface on 3% of what I and my Mac can do so I want to learn as much as I can so I can become as well versed as so many of you are. I respected so many of you with your knowledge, but often, I am so overwhelmed with the information I read. making event registration sites accessible for screen readers
Hi list, I was just contacted by a woman who is the Executive Director for an organization specializing in adaptive sports for the blind, visually impaired, and physically challenged. She is giving a presentation to race organizers on how to make events more accessible and inclusive for the disabled. Since a majority of events, 5K, 10K, marathons, triathlons, and others have online registration, she wondered about how to make these sites accessible to screen readers or magnification software. The widely used site is www.active.com but I am wondering if anyone on the list has example of sites which are accessible and can be held up as a model how to ensure these sites are accessible? I do not know much about web development or design so what are suggestions that the site developer may consider to ensure screen readers/magnification programs can give the user of such sites access to all aspects of a site when registering for an event? Re: -- SPAM -- Re: not receiving emails in Mail
So David, just so I am understanding you correctly, are you saying to turn off spam filter by logging on to my internet service provider's site and making the changes there? I just went into Mail preferences and check my junk mail setting. Junk mail filter on is checked. I am thinking of unchecking it and see if that helps any. I use ATT too. Didn't even think of them as the source of this. The last time I tried getting help from their support, I had to continuously explain that I couldn't see the screen nor use the physical mouse yet the person kept insisting I tell him what images are on screen or to drag an item or two with my mouse. So I try to avoid their help as much as I can. not receiving emails in Mail
Hi list, Has anyone else been having issues not receiving all emails when using Mail? 1. When I open Mail, I hear the "ding" sound informing me I have a new email yet when checking my in box, there isn't a new message there. This happens a few times a week where I hear the new message sound but it isn't in my in box. I'll check sent and trash boxes in case they went there, but no they don't. When I bought my Mac, my local Apple Store moved all emails from my PC to the Mac leaving them in the same mailboxes in which they were in on my PC. In, Sent, and deleted. That means I have six mailboxes. 3 for my Mac mail activities and the 3 Apple Store experts moved from my PC. So, I even check those mailboxes but the supposed new emails I just received are not there either. 2. The way I have concluded I am not receiving emails is that as part of my Facebook account, by default, I get sent emails on every FB notification such as; friend request, comments on my status, FB email, etc. I noticed that three times in three months, I did not receive an email about FB notification and found out when logging on to the site that in fact I had a friend request or response to a status update. I had hoped both these were bugs which would be fixed after I installed Snow Leopard which I did ten days ago. Yet, since last night, I have noticed that if I don't check email for an hour, then I do check, I'll see that I have 3 new messages from FB. Yet, logging on to FB, I find out that in the same hour, I should have been sent ten email notifications. Normally, I would chalk this up to an FB issue, but the fact that I frequently hear the sound for new emails and don't receive new messages makes me think this is a Mail problem. Any thoughts? Re: my 2 months with a mac
Hi list, I just wanted to agree with Anne. Web rotor is the thing I use most and love it! I made the switch to Mac in June of this year and found that while I run into some problems which are annoying and some times frustrating, VO and safari have been easier for me than the years of window screen readers. A major problem was on certain newspaper or news sites, pressing comman+ VO+ h would not take me to the next heading. Instead I'd get a message, "safari is busy" which would last some times as long as two minutes. I installed snow leopard ten days ago and now I don't have that issue at all. I have other minor annoying ones, but not that. I started using dos in 1993 and was introduced to windows in 1996. I toyed with it but much prefered dos until I was forced to make the full time switch to windows in 2000. I made the cold turkey switch to Mac this year and just recently read that a major obstacles for switchers from windows to Mac is the tab key usage. Yet, all those years of using windows, I actually never used the tab key to move around a site. I guess I never even realized I could have until read NFB's article review on VO. BTW, thank you to NFB. Their review and response to the firestorm post VO review was one of the final straws which helped me decide Mac was the way to go!! This is another reason I am so happy I joined this list. Donna asked a similar question which I was thinking of asking too. NeoOffice problems when opening files
Dear Everyone, When I worked in windows, I was most comfortable typing and saving files in Word Perfect. More recently I used MS Word and saved my files as RTF to share with friends, but when switching to Mac, I moved all my Word Perfect files to the new Mac. I was told I could open, edit, print, and so forth these WP files with NeoOffice. A sighted friend tested it out and was able to open, edit, and print out a test page. Yet, when I try to open files while using Voiceover to help me navigate, it does not work. Some times, VO simply speaks gibberish. Mostly, VO announces that NeoOffice has new window, but then I'm left with a blank screen and when I try to move VO curser in any direction, I get a "bonk" sound. I've tried opening files through Text Edit, Pages, and the documents folder in the dock. I've also gone to the applications table and opened NeoOffice then go to my documents table to open a file, but nothing has worked. What am I doing wrong? Re: VO and screenwriting software
Thank you Esther! I remember reading Final Draft 8.0 had been released. I always found that FD 7.13, which I own for the PC was very accessible, but when I switched to Mac, this summer, I learned from an Apple Store employee and someone from Apple Accessibility, that FD was not completely accessible with VO. It was Apple Accessibility who first introduced me to Montage and I was hopeful until hearing from Hollywood screenwriters about how it lacks from FD but a huge benefit has always been how Mariner Software is very public on how they make their software with accessibility to the blind/ visually impaired very much in mind! Again, thank you Esther. This is a great help. As a playwright/screenwriter, I continue to hope for even more accessibility advancements and hope if others on this list come across accessibility advancements, he/she will pass it along. VO and screenwriting software
Hi Everyone! I am wondering does anyone use a screenwriting software with VO? Which software is accessible? All the playwrights and screenwriters I know insist on Final Draft or Movie Magic- the top two Hollywood standards. After much research, I bought Final Draft 7.13 and it worked fine when I was using my PC but upon buying my Mac, I learned that most aspects of FD and MM for that fact are accessible with VO except the actual part where I would write/ edit my screenplays. Montage by Mariner Sotware makes it a point to state that it is 100% accessible to the blind and visually impaired, but various Hollywood screenwriters including John August give them credit for at least trying to compete with the Big 2 but that the software does not always format your scripts properly as Final Draft or Movie Magic do. I know Final Draft released a version 8 a few months back, but I've not been able to find out if it is accessible with VO. So, if anyone knows or has suggestions on screenwriting software which does properly format and is very much accessible with VO, I'd appreciate it. Re: Oppose. Should have introduced myself
Welcome Kevin! I just joined this group on Monday. I already have learn a few tricks. I know when I get stuck I will turn to these intelligent much more experienced Mac users to save me. I converted from windows in June and in those three months I have moments of bewilderment and frustration causing me to question my decision then it is soon followed by an experience where I realize I now have access to certain programs or sites I never did prior to switching. For the longest time, I struggled in windows since I used Window Eyes and only one other person I knew did too. Often, my sighted friends would tell me about a site or feature they insisted I had to use but I coul never. I'd explain my limitations with screen readers and they could never understand it usually until they visited and sat with me as I played on the computer. They'd get even more frustrated than I ever was. Yet, after two solid years of reading, interviewing, and asking Mac users, hearing about accessibility advancements, and non stop listening to podcasts or blogs by blind users who switched as well as sending emails to Apple Accessibility and always getting instant replies, I knew this was the place for me. I took the blind leap and didn't even have a backup. I took my PC and donated to my nephew b/c I trusted in my learning curve, friends, this group, and Apple. In just a short three months, I feel more a part of the world and with many of my friends owning Macs, I can even turn to them although they are sighted and they turn on VO and play with it too just to better understand what I am doing in case they ever need to help. VO curser suddenly skipping over one edit box on Facebook
Hi everyone! I am a new member to this group. In fact, I just received my confirmation this morning. I've already learned a few tips and tricks by reading the emails I've received. I am looking forward to so much more especially since I just converted in June 2009 to Apple Mac from Windows and the third party screen reader worlds. I am running Leopard but have decided to purchase Snow Leopard later today. I am wondering if anyone else uses Facebook and whether you have run into a problem which I started having a week ago Monday. With a few exceptions, most items seem to be labeled properly on FB and I can navigate the site and my friends' walls, but suddenly, VO skips over the control edit box where I would normally type my status update. VO also skips the edit box used to post on a friend's wall. VO recognizes and takes me to all other edit boxes such as "search", "write something" or "share button" A sighted friend said the site looks the same. The "what's on your mind" edit box is still there but he noticed VO curser gets to the link just before it and on the next press, it skips it completely to the "share button" Arrowing up, down, left, or right, VO curser always skips it. I can access every other edit box except that one. Again, I've been on FB for five months and this is the first time this has happened. Any ideas?
