Excel 2016 for Mac, reading row and column titles

2017-04-24 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
This sounds like this might be kind of a long shot, but I am desperately
hoping that there might be a way, using Voiceover on the Mac along with
Excel 2016, to have Voiceover read column titles while navigating across the
columns while navigation is down many rows deep into the spreadsheet.

I had thought that I had read that this might be accomplished by turning
column titles into headings, but have either not done this correctly, or may
have not done it at all.

So, any Excel experts who may have managed to accomplish this daunting task?

Sure would appreciate any tips, and thanks.

Reading mail Efficiently with Sierra

2017-03-27 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello.

It seems very beneficial to be able to skim within a mail message, moving
paragraph by paragraph.

There seems to be a discrepancy between what is said using Keyboard Help and
what is listed in the keyboard commands section of online help.

The command in question is Control Option Shift Page down.

When turning on Keyboard help, this command says, Go right one page.

Yet, in the Online help under text, this same command says Read next
paragraph.

When reading mail, when using the Go to Linked Item, Control Option J, this
command seems to work reliably to read paragraph by paragraph.

However, when opening a message with Enter or Command O, this command does
not work at all.

This is with mail in classic view, I do not know if it might act differently
in standard view..

I wonder why the difference?

Also, I wonder if there might be a way to add this command to the Quick Nav
rotor?

I would just like to find a reliable way to quickly read through a
significant number of email messages with the fewest keystrokes.

Thanks for any observations or tips.

Garage Band 10, Quantize a MIDI Track

2017-03-23 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello.

Coming to grips with the latest Garage Band in Sierra, I am wondering if
there is a hotkey to immediately quantize a track after recording it.

I have looked through lists of hotkeys but have not found anything so far.

Thanks for any guidance.

Fortunately, as others have suggested, it settled itself in after a day or so

New iMac, A Bit slow and Sluggish

2017-03-20 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello.
I had tested out the $999 21 inch iMac running Sierra in the Apple Store, and
it had run with impressive speed and responsiveness.
Applications opened quickly, web pages loaded quickly, and there was no lag or
"busy signals" at all.
I purchased the unit, and set it up with my Apple ID and iCloud account, there
were a couple of software updates, so the machine restarted twice.

It is not as fast ore responsive as in the Apple store. There are occasional
pauses or delays.

It is interesting, I have a 3 year old MacBook Air that is just as fast as the
day it was purchased.
Yet, this new iMac is not quite running as smoothly as I would have expected,
especially after having seen it running so beautifully in the Apple store.

Any suggestions at all for tweaking this Mac to run as might be expected?
Thanks a lot.

The Latest Update to Office 16 for Mac

Thanks for your thoughts.

Cannon Scanner and Mac Mini

2015-09-18 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello, I have a Macbook Air and a Mac Mini both running Yosemite.
When I connect the Cannon scanner to the Macbook Air, , and go to printers and
faxes, I can add it with no problem and it works beautifully.
However, on the Mac Mini, it just literally does not show up at all, I have
tried all available USB ports.
The scanner has no on/off button, and I made certain that it was unlocked.
It’s just not showing up at all.
Any suggestions would sure be appreciated.
Thanks.

Office for Mac 2016 Preview

2015-03-12 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello to the list.

I have just now downloaded and installed this Microsoft office for mac 2016
preview, and what a bitter disappointment this is so far.

Voiceover does not seem to read any of the text in my preliminary try out of
the Microsoft Word application, everything else seems to read just fine.

I know it’s an early preview, but it’s still shocking and truly hideous if
Voiceover will not work with 2016 Office for mac.

Using Numbers for Simple Multiplication

2015-02-26 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello to the list.
I may be missing something very basic about concepts for using Numbers.
With two adjacent numbers, either in a row or a column, I cannot get the
Product function in numbers to multiply the entries.
I’ve tried selecting the numbers, but that did not seem to work, but placing
the cursor in an adjacent blank cell, I went to the insert menu, then formulas,
and tried both Enter and VO Spacebar on Product.

Clearly this must be operator error, so any hints about performing basic
formula calculations would be really helpful.
Thanks.

Sorting Data in Numbers

2015-01-08 Thread Jim Fettgather
This one really has me stumped.
After highlighting a row of numbers to be sorted in either a row or column of
numbers, then stop interacting with the table and VO left arrow to the
formatter group, because this seems to be where the sort options are located,
no matter what I select, the sort now option is dimmed.
Evem doing VO Shift M, and then selecting sort options, I am immediately
returned back to the spreadsheet.
Is there a hidden secrent to be able to sort data in Numbers?
Thanks.

Re: Yosemite: Continuing Curiosities in Spotlight Search

Another completely strange occurrence, I now just updated a 2014 Macbook Air to

The computer on which there were no results whatsoever was a 2012 Mac Mini.
Very interesting.

Hi,

Hmmm. I did the same as you entering “Starbucks” into my Entry field. The
first result was your message, then I could arrow down through various other
references to Starbucks that it found. Interestingly enough, I had more than a
dozen references to Starbucks in various eMails and no others on my computer.
Another interesting thing is that it did not display any Internet or Wikipedia
results, which is likely false as I would venture to say that Starbucks should
show up quite a bit around the Net. Probably some setting I need to manipulate.

yosemite and spotlight search

2014-10-20 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
I have a quick question about the way that Spotlight is supposed to work in
Yosemite.

As far as I have been able to read, you should be able to get web results from
Bing, using Spotlight.

So, pressing Command Spacebar, which brings up the edit box, and then typing in
a search term, using the down arrow key produces absolutely no results.

Results are indeed displayed for documents and email, but I am hoping that
there might be an easy way to get Bing results displayed in Spotlight, if this
is supposed to be the way that it works.
Thanks.

Mail Busy

2014-10-17 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
This is a strange phenomenon.
After installing Yosemite, after launching mail, it is perpetually busy.
And I mean, it stays busy.
Absolutely no way to read or compose mail, it’s simply stuck on busy.

I sure don’t know how to fix this one.

Re: Safari and Arrow keys

2014-10-17 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
When using up and down arrow keys in Safari, it seems like the
syncronization is not exactly precise to where the voiceover cursor is
located.
Also, shouldn't there be a hotkey in Safari, with this new functionality, to
read next paragraph?

I could not seem to get this to work, so any observations would be welcome.

Subject: Safari and Arrow keys

I notice from Apple Vis that there is a claim that a major benefit of the
upgrade to 10.10 is the ability to navigate and read and select using normal
arrow keys in Safari.

I just thought people should know that this has been available in Mavericks
10.9 for quite a while now. I first noticed it sat the beginning of
September.

Not a reason not to upgrade but if somebody wanted to stick to Mavericks
because of the VO performance bug they should know that this is available.

Re: DVD Player for the Mac

2014-08-21 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hi, I tried VLC for the Mac, and honestly, I could not figure it out, the
interface just did not seem to make any sense to me at all.
I’ve been trying to access the titles in 3 ways from the built in DVD player. .
1. Going to the Go menu, arrrowing down to titles, using right arrow,
selecting a title, and either using 1 of 3 methods, spacebar, enter, or command
control option F5 and clicking the mouse.
Or, usint Control Shift Option M to bring up the right click menu, arrowing
down a bit, and all the titles are listed there as well.
This is the first DVD where I have encountered this problem.
Nothing seems to work, this is driving me mad.
I would download the entire TV series from Itunes, but only season 5 is
available.
This is just so strange.

Hi everybody,

I've mentioned this on a couple threads already, but I thought I
would make

an announcement to the group...

We just added ChromeVox to the Chrome Web Store! Hooray!

Here are some of the advantages to installing ChromeVox from the Web
Store:

- You'll get automatic updates
- Version numbers mean something
- We have a fancy new icon :)

I updated the Installation Instructions here:
http://code.google.com/p/google-axs-chrome/wiki/InstallingChromeVox
and they

describe how to download it from the Web Store.

Here is the quick version:
1) Make sure you're running Chrome 14 or higher
2) Uninstall any previous version of ChromeVox
3) Go to the ChromeVox page in the Chrome Web Store:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kgejglhpjiefppelpmljglcjbhoiplfn

4) Click on the "Add to Chrome" button
5) A dialog should pop up titled "Confirm Installation" that lists the
permissions that ChromeVox needs. We have a wiki page now about why
we need

these permissions if you're interested:
http://code.google.com/p/google-axs-chrome/wiki/PermissionsGuide .
Click on

the "Install" button to complete the installation process.
6) Yay, ChromeVox is now installed!

Lion: Safari and Loading Pages

2011-09-02 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hello.

I may have inadvertently changed something, now, when I click on a
link in Safari, Voicever announces, pressed link, and there is no
longer an indication of when the new page loads.
It does load, but silently, with no audible indication of the download progress.

Any hints as to how to get it back to the typical behavior would be
appreciated, and thanks.

So, in an attempt to access and install from the recovery partition,
using Command R to start the machine, and connecting to the net via

the prompt, Signing into the App Store.
Then, absolutely nothing after that, just hangs on that screen.
Is this also not accessible even using Ethernet to connect?

 Hi,
do you know if this is the case when installing from a DVD as well? I am
thinking of making a DVD for safe keeping once I get Lion put on my
 other
Mac; but before I did that I wanted to get used to Lion first and get
everything figured out, which is what I'm doing now.
 Thanks,

Apple Script for Double Space in Text Edit

2011-07-12 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hi, it really is not too difficult to interact with the ruler in Text
Edit to set the line spacing to double space in a document.

However, I wonder if it would be possible to write an apple script to
accomplish the task with a keystroke?

Thanks for any thoughts.

According to keyboard help, you are supposed to be able to hold down the the
control key and tap to jump to a linked item, such as moving from the messages
table in mail to the text.

I can get this to accknowledge this gesture in keyboard help, but for some
reason, I cannot get it to work in the mail program.

Hi, Garth,

I have had some very good luck with Eye TV in conjunction with the
iPhone. The program guide, which is not at all accessible from within
Eye TV, is completely accessible from the iPhone or iPad.

Plus, you can stream programs over a Wifi connection from your Eye TV
to an iPhone or iPad.

I have a short audio demo of how all of this works:

Thanks.

So, on the same page as the Mac download, the following info appears
for the Accessible world auditorium room.

Here is the info that you need to connect using our TC Conference for MAC:

Server: 74.208.96.53
Username: enter your name
Password: enter your password (if available)
Room ID: rs5affc3cfa191

Also, I had to restart the Mac, or restart the program, I don't recall
which, but it's probably a good idea just to be safe and restart the
computer, and then, the program was able to log into the room just
fine.

Here is one place to download the Mac plug in. You need not enter the

I might also mention that there are two pieces of information that you
need to provide for the software, the IP address, and the room number.
I have found that you need only do this one time.
The Mac version is not as automated as the Windows version of the

Talking Communities Mac Client

2010-12-07 Thread Jim Fettgather

Hello.

Some web sites, such as Accessible World, use the popular Talking
Communities TC Chat client to conduct conferences using both audio and text.

I've used this client in Windows, and I have now tried it with the Mac,
and it actually is easy to use, requiring a bit more fiddling, having
to enter TCIP and room information manually.

After once entering this information, the client works very well.
The exception is, there does not seem to be a keyboard command to toggle
the microphone.
You can use VO Space on a button to toggle the microphone on and off,
but I'm wondering if anyone has discovered any hidden secrets to use
this client with the keyboard?

Thanks.

Re: Replacing Windows Media Centre with a Mac

Eye TV allows you to easily change the channel and to view your recorded
programsl both of which are accessible with Voiceover.

The program guide is not accessible with Voiceover, making it impossible
to schedule recordings in advance.

It is certainly possible to start a recording at any time with a hot
key, but if the program guide were accessible, this would be a fantastic
computer based DVR solution.

The Apple store sells a dongle that has duel TV tuners called an Eye TV. It
comes with software that seems similar to Media Centre so on the face of it
this should meet mine and my families needs however I have a few questions.

firstly has anyone had any experience with such a system? Does VO work well
with the Eye TV interface?

The Eye TV dongle plugs into the mini through one of its USB ports and is able
to record two channels at once. This seems to me to be a lot of data to try and
fit through one USB 2 port. The TV card is internal on our current machine.
Does anyone know if this is a valid concern? May be USB is able to take two HD
video streams.

We have more then enough good high def digital TV content on free to air in
Australia and don't have access to hulu or net flicks here so I really need the
Mac mini to be able to fully replace the DVR functionality of our current
machine before proposing the switch to my wife.

I hope someone can let me know their experiences.

Thanks,
Garth

Re: confirming apple tv has vo support

2010-11-22 Thread Jim Fettgather
I am also continuing to search for a Mac-based TV tuner whose program
guide is accessible. The El Gato Eye TV, spelled E Y E works great as
far as it goes. You can easily switch channels, play programs that
have already been recorded, and start a recording live at any time
simply by pressing Command R. But you cannot schedule recordings in
advance. This is indeed highly highly disappointing.

Hi there all,

POP is Post Office protocol. It simply downloads all of your new messages to

IMAP is Internet Message Access Protocol. Your messages, folders, filters, and

advantage, is, so I am told, is that you can access your account from work,

The problem I found that VO keeps saying, Mail is busy and it takes time to

POP is simpler and is easier to manage as far as I'm concerned.

It's my Windows machine that has a severe lag when moving or deleting

My Passport External Hard Drive

2010-09-19 Thread Jim Fettgather

Hi to the list.

I had purchased a My Passport 500 GB external hard drive, when
connecting it to the Mac, a message came up asking if i wanted to use
Time Machine to back up files.

I elected not to use Time Machine but instead to copy and move files
manually.

However, when I copy files or folders to the clipboard, and open My
Passport, paste options are dimmed, in every case.

Any suggestions as to what's happening?

Thanks a lot.

Hello.

When reading mail, often, when using Control Option J to move between the
mail message table and the message text, there are unnatural pauses as
Voiceover reads the text of the message.

These pauses seem to occur at the end of each line, but not on all messages.

Any way to get Voiceover to read messages without these distracting, unnatural

built in will make life easier.

Also some low vision users will appreciate being able to easily
connect a mac up to a huge TV will benefit from this. I know if I
still have had my vision I would have bought one of these, as they are
much better then the Apple TV. However I would have liked to have
seen the Mac mini starting price at £499 to keep it below the £500
price tag as you can buy a Windows laptop for less then the price of
the Mac mini. Would have also liked the Mac mini to be available in
black too to fit in with most AV equipment. Maybe at its current
price blu-ray should have been built in? Would like to see Apple add
more TV like features too. Imagine talking menus and TV guide on a
HDTV? now that would be useful as I find it very difficult to use my
cable set top box since going blind.
Apple has redesigned it's mac mini. It's now shorter (at just over an
inch thick), but also wider (at approximately 7.1" square). The big
thing on this one is, on the bottom, there is a round cover. Twist
this cover, and remove it, and you are immediately granted access to
the RAM. There is also a model range cut for the mini. You now just
have the one lower priced (what I call "consumer") model at $699, and
then the server at $999. There's also an SD card slot on the back
(come in from the left hand side, and it's on the top, above the two
round audio ports). Finally, keep going beyond the SD card, towards
the right. You will first find four USB 2.0 ports, and beyond the
furthest right port (or the one closest to the center of the back of
the Mini, however you prefer) there are two ports. One is the mini
DVI port that's found on Apple's MacBook Pro. The one to the right of
that is long, rectangular, and has an angular shape on the bottom.
This is Apple's brand new HDMI port. This means that, if you have an
HD TV, you can hook up your Mini and use your HD TV as the monitor. A
full port description is as follows. If you come in from the right
hand side, the back has the following ports from right to left: Power
(switch), power (A/C adapter port), ethernet, Firewire 800 (the
horizontal long line below this is a cooling vent), then thee's the
HDMI port that I spoke of earlier, and the Mini DVI port. Finally,
following on from the DVI port, again proceeding to the left, there
is the four USB ports, and an SD card slot, and that's where you will
see the left edge of your Mini. Below the SD card slot are two audio
jacks. The one closest to the edge is headphone, and the one closest
to the center is line-in. More info can be found at
http://www.apple.com/macmini/ I'm curious about your opinion on this.
For those who don't know, the Mini has been around since 2005, and
this is it's first full redesign in five years. In my opinion, it was
way overdue, and I'm glad they finally got around to it.

Iworks Trial Download

Email was exactly what I was going to suggest, but recently, Bookshare
files don't seem to contain HTML files, but only the XML equivalents.

Re: Abbyy FineReader works well

How would one go about researching purchasing a new scanner compatible
with Fine reader without the need for third party software?
Thanks.

Thunderbird for the Mac?

2009-10-09 Thread Jim Fettgather

Hi. Has anyone been successful installing the Thunderbird email
program with Snow Lepoard?
I tried to open the Thunderbird DMG file, and it appeared as if even
the install process was not accessible, although, I could have been
doing something incorrectly.

Any prior experiences with Thunderbird or correct procedures for
installation will be highly appreciated, and thanks.

Mail Clients for the Mac?

2009-09-22 Thread Jim Fettgather

Hi to the list.

Has anyone tried any other mail clients besides Apple Mail that ships
with Snow Leopard?

I'm asking only because of the way that VO reads a lot of mail now,
with these hideous pauses at the end of each line.

Thanks a lot.

I am curious to know, what advantages are there to turning off the

Itunes 9 and the Command Browser

2009-09-15 Thread Jim Fettgather

Hi to the list.

Using Itunes 9, after turning on the store browser with Command B,
it's fairly straight forward to choose categories and interact with
all of the various artists and titles. It seems very responsive.

I'm wondering though if anyone has found a way to jump to specific
entries beginning with a specific letter by typing that letter, as it
is quite tedious to VO keys plus down arrow dozens of times to get to
a specific place in the browser.

Thanks a lot for any suggestions.
