Re: rosetta stonesand voiceover?

2011-10-20 Thread Joan Alice Maria Gibson, Esquire
Don't think you need VoiceOver for Rosetta. Had it on my iMac G4, running
Panther, then upgraded to Tiger; and, cannot remember needing to use
VoiceOver. But that was 3 years ago when it died in a dozen rapid-fire
property lightning strikes. I believe that the CDs/DVDs (?) had its own
voice. When trying to learn Dutch, I turned off the visual [spelling of the
words] and just listened to the Dutch … learnt it much easier that way.
Surely do miss my Rosetta Languages; but, don't think I'll ever be able to
buy them again. They cost me way over $400.00 back in 2003!

Good luck, have fun with Rosetta; and, please let me how it is working out
for you. Would love to buy the discs again for my Leopard and Snow Leopard
MacBook Pros!

Re: Apple Care Protection

2011-09-30 Thread Joan Alice Maria Gibson, Esquire
I definitely recommend it! My iMac G4 was repaired under it in 2007 when it
failed. Apple did a top-notch job and returned it to me jolly quick. in 2009
it was destroyed by a dozen lightning strikes on my property; destroying the
power supply and logic board. Since it was then out of warranty, it now sits
atop my stand-up stand, as I have no where to store it.

Since then, I bought a MacBook Pro with Leopard and bought AppleCare for it.
This year I sent it back as the warranty was about to expire; they sending a
box overnight via FedEx, and the replaced the optical drive … CD/DVD ROM and
SuperDrive, network card, Airport card, logic board, and Airport card [did
not know it was bad], and returned it to me overnight
via FedEx. I am on it now. Purchased another MacBook Pro on eBay [won the
bid] for $677.00 including shipping with a 500 GB HD [my original has a 160
GB HD]. They even re-installed my third-party software back onto it! It now
works better than ever! I'm a real happy camper now!

I also get AppleCare for my iPods! None have failed yet; but, it surely is
worth it just for the no-cost phone help!

Hooray for you! I am so pleased. Wish I could do the same with mine; but,
can't see well enough and my hands are too spastic to handle/account for all
the little screws at the bottom. Most I can hope for is to get help from a
friend to remove the HD from its 'womb' screeching and screaming; and, to
place it in an external dock which I bought for the purpose and believe it
might work [if not destroyed]. My whole life is on that iMac G4 running
Tiger!

Re: Tiger or leopard?

2011-09-23 Thread Joan Alice Maria Gibson, Esquire
I have one installation disc of 10.6 Snow Leopard but am keeping it as I may
need it to reinstall if my Snow Leopard MacBook Pro I bought on eBay goes
haywire [came without installation disc]. It only cost me $25.00 from Apple.
Still prefer my MacBook Pro with Leopard [which I refused to upgrade] as it
can do the things which Snow Leopard can't do as I have no updated drivers
for my peripherals which date all the way back to 2007. I feel it is a
crying shame that eBay and others are charging so much for the Leopard disc!
After finding out what Lion has left out, I chose not to upgrade and did not
buy the Lion install disc. Also was going for $25.00, I believe.

Good luck to all of you with your Power PCs. Just loved mine [iMac G4] and
miss it sorely, but it was destroyed [power supply and logic board] during a
dozen, rapid-fire property lightning strikes 29 November 2009. I had
upgraded it to Panther so as to have VoiceOver.

Be aware that my strengths are in writing, arranging, lead and backing

they'll have to do. The drums I used was the free Drumcore kits. Anyway,

Re: what I think

2010-04-15 Thread Joan Alice Maria Gibson, Esquire
I agree with Ray completely—my sentiments precisely!

I wait it out and try to figure out things for myself. Always I appreciate
it when someone admits to being wrong or to making a mistake; and, go on
from there. Heavens I surely do make a lot of mistakes, admit it, and tell
what work-a-rounds or other solutions I've found that do work.

Braille, monitor to correct many of their initially incorrect statements.
Besides, that's not why I joined this list. It appears that some of you
want to criticize the NFB for an initially bad review of Voice Over; but,
not acknowledge when they admit they made quite a few substantial mistakes
and openly apologized for them in the Monitor. IF you make a mistake,
you've got to be willing to own up that you've made it and try to make good
what corrections you need to. No. The NFB is not perfect; but then again,
who is? Apple? No. Microsoft? No. Me? No. You? no. Look y'all, they
made a very big set of mistakes in their June review. Only a fool would
deny that. but, let me remind all of y'all here that in the December
update, they did correct many of their earlier statements. Okay. Maybe not
all of them, but, enough of them so that I think they deserve credit for
having owned up to when they were wrong. But, seems to me like some of
y'all can't stand to acknowledge that they did make an effort to clean up
the mess they made. If that's what this list is going to turn in to, I'm
out o' here!!! But, I'd rather think, (at least for the moment), that most
of the people on this list are better than that. I'm not saying y'all all
have to become fans of the NFB. All I'm saying is lay off. They did wrong,
and, they apologized for and made an effort to correct that wrong. To me,
when you commit a wrong very publicly, (as in the June Braille Monitor),
and then you just as publicly apologize for it and make efforts to correct
it, (as in the December Braille Monitor), you've got to frankly
acknowledge that fact; and, whether you like it or not, they did!!! Let's
 remember that shall we?

Re: NLS DTB players, usb flash drives, formating on a mac, cartrage errors Help?

2010-04-11 Thread Joan Alice Maria Gibson, Esquire
Before I tried downloading an NLSdtb, The Tech person at the Talking Book
Library [phoenix, Arizona] told me first how to upgrade the thumb drive [he
recommends only using no more than a 2 gigabyte as it can take a 4 gigabyte
max but the dtbm has to work much harder to mount it; and, he said not to
use more than a 4 gigabyte. You may want to talk to the Tech person from the
local Talking Book Library or the one who mails you your books for how to
download the Mac Upgrade. I have forgot how to do it.

I prefer the Kingston Data Traveler always but have used a Duracell 2
gigabyte without problems and Sandisk 2 gigabyte thumb drive without
problems. I always delete the books from the drive, empty the Mac's trash,
then remove the drive if I do not want to listen to them again. Never any
problems. BTW, the dtbm is PC formatted with an older version Windows.

My only problem is that if I have more than 2 books on the drive, the dtbm
will not let me choose other than the first one. Any suggestions?

To bring up the book list you press and hold down the play key till it says
bookshelf. then depending on the player I don't know what you do with the
standard. with the advanced you hit the previous or next buttons till you
get the book you want and then hit play. I usually have to hit play twice

it doesn't talk out of the box. If you want it to talk then you need
to buy an ITell talking IPod controller from Maxyaids in north
america, or from cobolt systems in the UK. I carried it around with
me for about a month. It's never been dropped or mistreated, but may
have some minor surface scratches from riding around in my pocket.

It comes with a woll sock case, and a usb docking cable. I have the
original earbuds, but I'm sure you can probably live without them,

I'd really like to get $250 for it. At least, I think I could get
that on EBay, but I realize that the buyer will probably want to go
out and get an ITel which is another expense again. So, make me an
offer if your interested and I'm sure we can work something out.

I have to say, I love this player. It's got great hardware in it.
Looks great, stores a lot... There's only one drawback for me, and I
thought I could live with it, but no, I just can't. That is ITunes. I
know there are supposed to be ways around ITunes, but I've tried a
