Hi,

You can ask Alexa to switch to a male voice.

I switched mine a while ago.

I do not own an echo, and if alexa's voice is the one I have come across
from Amazon she sounds rather unpleasant speaking personally, but I prefer
male voices in general.
Is there a way to change her voice if one dislikes the sound?

yesterday when I tried to join a google meeting from my mac. I had
never experienced this problem before. For some reason, whenever I
tried to activate the link, safari was launched as usual, but
safari neither displayed any information nor showed up the usual
dialogue requesting permission to access google meets. I tried
everything I could come up with, but the result was always the
same. Since I have my e-mail synchronized with my other devices,
including my iPhone and my windows pc computer, I tried opening the

any problem. I don’t want this happening to me since I love to be
able to connect to these meetings from my mac.

Has someone had this happening and how you solve it?

Re: Microsoft Edge on the Mac

2020-06-28 Thread Leo Bado

Hi Karen,

Sadly, the last time I tried out edge chromium on my Mac, these neural
voices didn’t show up in the list to pick a voice when reading aloud.
So, I am assuming they are not available yet for mac users. Personally,
in my windows PC I always read articles on the NY times using the male
American voice, which I really like.

As for the matter of one voice for task or program, I’m totally on board
with your opinion. However, in this particular case, I believe that the
feature of reading out loud in edge chromium is intended for users in
general, and not exactly for visual impaired users.

Going further, I flatly believe that these human sounding voices are the
future for the synthesizers as we know them. I’m not saying this is good
or bad, but a foreseeable scenario in any case.

Best,
   Leo

After all in theory adaptive tools serves as extension of or

Hello Anne,

it kind of worked, but not as I expected. Whenever I launch pages, I

This works for me under Mojave, and for my husband under Catalina.

Re: What's App on the Mac.

2020-05-18 Thread Leo Bado
Hi, I've never used Whatsapp on the mac, however, some weeks ago I
decided to give it a try but the experience was more than an
inconvenience. Today, jus about an hour ago, I heard someone on a
Whatsapp group that the latest  update has just come out, and it'has
been to some degree enhanced from an accesible prospective.

Bibliography on pages, accesible?

2019-06-15 Thread Leo Bado

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is having a good Saturday.

This is my question, does anyone know if making a bibliography on pages
is fully accessible?

So far I’ve red the details that I need in order to accomplish such a
task, but I’m only making some research, so I thought that may be
someone here has had a first hand experience and can give me some info
about it.

Please, any comment, remark or suggestion will be highly helpful, it
does not need to be a first hand experience exactly, but someone may
have heard a valuable piece of information from someone else.

Re: Voice Over and annotations in pages.

2019-06-03 Thread Leo Bado

Hi,

Well I am grateful as well for this feature: I mean it is fantastic.
Yesterday I was trying to make comments and reply in a word document,
but neither jaws or n v d a were working as expected in office 365. It
might have been that there were so many comments and insertions that
both screen readers crushed out. Therefore, I turned on my mac and
everything was smooth sailing from that point on. The only thing that I
find a bit annoying is that when I want to read the document with no
distractions, voice over keeps verbalizing the first comment in an
annotation, but I guess I just will have to copy the text on textedit
and turn back to pages each time I want to make a new comment or reply
to a previous one.

autocorrection on pages?

2019-05-16 Thread Leo Bado

Hello,

I want to ask a question for those of you who are used to type and edit
text on pages.

Would you find pages sufficiently enough reliable when it comes to
correct spelling automatically?

I have this option checked in pages preferences, and I am starting to
use pages for text-processing on a regular bases, so I would like to
know some opinions about it.

On the Mac, I tend to use TextMate for editing. However, it hasn’t
received any updates for quite a while. Although it still works (at
least for now), I’m wondering whether there is anything else to which
I should consider migrating.

I generally edit LaTeX, Markdown, HTML, and occasionally source code
in any of several programming languages. Note that, for LaTeX, the
TeXShop editor appears to be somewhat accessible with VoiceOver, which
is encouraging.

Integration with Git revision control is also desirable.

I have good editing arrangements in place on Linux and Windows, but,
obviously, I shouldn’t be tempted to switch operating systems just to
edit a file.

Hi,

I just tested it with three Pages documents on my 2017 MBP, and it
worked as it should with the cmd-accent combination.  Usually, when
things like this don't work, it's either due to a shortcut conflict,
or mouse keys are enabled.  Does cmd-w or cmd-o do the expected thing
of closing a window or opening something as expected?  If so, then
it's most likely a conflict.  Go into system Prefs, Keyboard, and see
if you have anything in there that uses the cmd-accent combination.
Also, restart your Mac to see if there's just an inconsistency that
is fixed by the restart.

Switching among documents on pages?

2019-05-01 Thread Leo Bado

Hello,
this is driving me absolutely insane.
I want to switch among two, three or more documents on pages, using a
shortcut.
When I took a look on google, people's instructions are to hit command
plus tilde, but I just can't figure out which key is this "tilde" on my
keyboard.
So, what should I do to do what I want?  create a shorcut? modify a
particular shorcut?

I'm using a macbook pro late 2013.
Thanks for any help.

Reading punctuation with a different voice in pages?

2019-04-25 Thread Leo Bado

Hello,

My question is about text processing in pages.

is it possible to have voice over pronouncing punctuation such as comas
and periods with a different voice from the one who is being used?
For example, as Alex reads the text, Susan reads comas, periods and
semicolons, etc.

Thanks for precise information or or any information closely related to
my question.

Re: Launching apps via spotlight on Mac has stopped working in High Sierra

2018-11-04 Thread Leo Bado

Hello,

This exact problem occured to me for months using High Sierra, it was a
nightmare because is a serious issue for people who like to gain time
and be productive when using the mac.

I really hope this problem gets fixed by following apple support
instructions, I followed them, and sadly, it didn’t.I followed all the
steps and even I used terminal as I recall it was recommended on a blog
for some dude.I didn’t success but I hope this isn’t your case.

I got this problem solved without doing absolutely anything but updating
my mac to Mojave.

I’m not recommending you to do the same, jus letting you know.

Given the hit or miss nature of the crashes, it’s most likely in your

Here are instructions on how to rebuild your spotlight index files:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716

Now, as to the preferences, they are buried under your
/Users/yournamehere/Library folder (which is normally invisible to finder).

Also, if you can get it to work, try out onyx (it’s a system maintenance tool).
You will have to find a way around the initial startup as the contents inside
that pane are invisible to voiceover (and yes, I have contacted the developers
over this and he seems ambivalent about doing anything about it).

Anyway, hope this helps.

For some weeks now, and I find it difficult to remember the moment or event

the finder window. This makes it impossible to launch an app via spotlight, a
great loss of functionality for me. Has anyone else experienced this, or could
you check it out for me before I start badgering Apple Accessibility? The
interesting added thing is that sometimes it will work but more often than not
it doesn’t. This is under High Sierra. Is it possible to rebuild spotlight

Many thanks

System voice doesn't say current time anymore...

2018-10-03 Thread Leo Bado

Hi everyone,

When I press ()righ control) plus t, so the system voice can say outloud
the current time it doesn’t work at all.

All the others action with right control are working good, for example,
right control plus m, it opens mail app with no problem.

This is happening since I upgraded to Mojave, and I believe it might be
because when a window notification prompted me asking to allow some
scrypt or something like that I didn’t allow the action.I totally
misunderstood the message.

How can I fix this?

Thank you guys!

Hello Everyone,

As the following information works beautifully in Mac OS Mojave, I thought I
would post it, yet again, this year.

The purpose of the steps, below, is so that you can have a different TTS,
from that of your default VoiceOver TTS, read out all of the system
notifications, be they automatic or on-demand.

By on-demand, for example, I have setup the key combo of Control+Shift+N to
open the Notification center on my Mac.

Okay, read and enjoy.

How To Set a VoiceOver Activity for The Notification Center In Mac OS Mojave

NOTE:
This document assumes that you know how to create and configure VoiceOver
Activities.

Generally speaking, I prefer my default system VoiceOver voice to be Alex.
However, I want any and all of my system notifications to use my beloved
Samantha voice.

The short answer:

To set a VoiceOver Activity for the Mac OSX Notification Center, when
selecting a finder app in the Activity configuration process, simply locate
the Notification Center app and select it. The notification app is located
in the Core Services Folder of the Library folder which is located on the
hard drive's system folder.

The long answer is that when you Click on the Find App option during the
Activity creation process, you will be placed in the Applications folder.
The Notification Center app is located in a different place. You must find
the correct folder and then simply select the Notifications.app file.

A.
First, open the computer's hard drive.
Second, open the System folder.
Third, open the Library folder.
Fourth, open the CoreServices folder.
Fifth, select the Notification.app file.

or

B.
Use the Command + Shift + G, key-combo, and type in
/System/Library/CoreServices/
to get to the correct folder, super fast.

Good Luck and Enjoy.

Mark

It’s only started doing this since I updated to Mojave last night.  I

before it will start talking again.  Just toggling voiceover isn’t
enough.  I’m using Alex on a Mac book pro 15 inch 2018 with touch bar.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi,

I responded exactly the same to another person on other complete

continuous reading but reading line by line with the cursor.Lol

That might work for people who reads every once in a while but not for
heavy steady readers. Now, as I said on a previous message the only
viable alternative I had found so far is book reader, which is good
however you can notice it’s not designed thinking of blind people but
its usability is good. You can check the review of this app on applevis.I
can’t figure out how to read pdf format though.Epub, mobi, docx, rtf and

Hi,

I particularly use book reader, up the moment is the best app I had
found to read ebooks on mac, I'm not able to read pdf books though, I
consider this a OS problem since the same happens with ibooks and any
other app for reading pdf documents.

But it goes perfect with epub and all the other ebook formats, You can
check a review of this app on applevis by licking on the next link,
hth., oh I forgot to mention, this app uses the voice of the system so
if You want to change voice You need to go to system preferences.

Hi Donna,

I would say this shortly, I really wish You the best experience with
android,

but android platform and ios platform are two diferent galaxys.

Believe me, I agree with You in some aspects about what You said before
about apple but switch to android because of this will bring You what I
believe will be waste of money and time.

Sorry if anyone is offended, this is my particular point of view when I
compare these two platforms.

In order to master an android device You will need to take a deep
breath, be really patient, have a lot of free time and finally being
really really curious to find tweaks and tricks that are not in any

Just my thoughts.

You know, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm feeling frustrated with
Apple. I was really hoping that the new iPhone models would include an option
for a faster iPhone 8. Face ID sucks. It takes significantly longer to unlock
your phone, and is much more finicky. I'm feeling resentful that Apple is
trying to force me into a technology that I have tried, and do not like. I
don't want Face ID. I don't need a ginormous screen. I sure as h*** don't
need three cameras. I'm starting to wonder if my next phone will be a cheapy
that makes calls and texts, and I do the rest from my Mac. I don't want some
giant tech company to dictate how I will use technology. If Apple wants to
continue to promote face recognition to the exclusion of more convenient
technologies, that's their prerogative. But they should have kept a touch
option available for those of us who tried face ID and know it sucks. And as
for the new flick up for home? It sucks, too. Being able to quickly press a
home button--be it actual or virtual--was much more efficient. My only
power--small though it may be--is my purchasing power. And I am really
wondering if my next phone will be a non-Apple product.

I know this is only tangentially related to the start-up chime, but I feel it's
all part of the same thing. Why not leave the chime enabled, or at least make
it an option for those who want it? Why should Apple be deciding this for us?
They seem to want to make an argument that they are not big-brotherish, but
actually, they're no better than the rest.

Hi Listers

Ok so I'm kind of getting hacked off with the fact my new work Mac Book Pro
doesn't do the start up chimes that Apple / mac computers have done since
long before I started using Mac products.

I've got VO starting at log in but when for some reason I need to force
restart for some unknown reason, if I use the power button to turn off / on
the machine I never know when it's restarting until it starts talking to
me,
If I'm lucky enough for vo to still be talking.I know this effects us all,
But have we ever or has anyone ever contacted Apple accessibility to explain
that this chime at start up would be really useful to us the sight impaired
to know when / if our machines are starting up
Or do in my case I just keep thinking the batteries dead and put it on mains
power when I don't need to.

Any thoughts appreciated.

spotlight doesn't work!

2018-08-20 Thread Leo Bado

Hi again listers,

firs of all I want to thank everybody who had responded to my questions
in the past.

Here I come with another question.

Since the last OS minor update several weeks ago I noticed spotlight
doesn't work anymore.  No matter what I write in the edit box I never
get results.

Of course I had tryed re indexing again, I even tryed some terminal
commands I came across on the web but nothing seems to work.

Ultimately I had to install an app called alfred and it's working great
but  I find this spotlight issue disturbing, I even stopped the process
that apparently works in association with spotlight and again, nothing.

any idea?

Here is Anne Robertson's description of how to do this. Takes some getting

When reading through the document, VoiceOver should read both the deleted text
and the inserted text. Command-Option-k should put you in the popover where you
should hear what has been deleted and where you can accept or reject the
change. Pressing VO-j twice should put you back in the body of the document at
the point where you left it.

Command-Shift-K will allow you to enter a new comment.

Hi guys,

I would like to know if some parameters can be changed using this text
to speech app.

Specificly speed rate and quality of the audiofiles.

When I use the option send to itunes as a spolken track the audiofile is
really huge, 2 or 3 gb depending on the document.

So, is there a way to control the file size when using speech central?

Hi all
I use my iPhone 7 with the screen curtain on 90% of the time and it’s around
1.5 years old now. A week or 2 ago a sited friend used my phone for taking
photos and commented that the photos have a weird yellowish tint to them. We
then sent the photos to his phone and the yellow wasn’t there, so concluded
that it must be my phones screen.

Now I wonder if using the screen curtain for prolonged periods might have
caused this? Have anyone ever asked Apple about prolonged use of the screen
curtain or seen any official communication on this matter and whether it can
effect screens?

To add to Alex's instructions, know that the menus are slightly
different in the MacOS as compared to Windows.  That is, in Windows,
the File, Edit, View etc menus are attached to the window of the

Desktop screen.  So, as Alex mentioned, VO-m will always access the
menu bar whenever there is a menubar to be had.  From a visual
prospective, the menubar resides at the top of the screen in all
applications.  Items like Toolbars and ribbons reside within the
window itself, thus can be access with regular VO navigation commands
while in that window.

You would hold down control and option, press m, then let the keys go.
VoiceOver should announce that you're on the Apple menu. Press right
arrow to get to the file menu, which should be two presses over, then
down arrow to open the menu. You can now start typing "export",
hitting enter when you land on it, or just down arrow to it. To
clarify, you don't need to type the full word you want, just enough
letters to find it. Again, this works in any menu in any application.l

Hello Leo,

I believe you are the one who just introduced yourself?

The Macintosh has several commands in the file menu, but it does get a
little confusing with Apple applications because documents are often
automatically saved every few minutes or so by default.

There should be an export option in the file menu to save as a
Microsoft Word document. Currently I am working on an older system and
I also changed my file menu so that the that it is more like older
Macintoshes and other systems with a Save / Save As menu items. Also
note that in 97 percent of Macintosh applications the keystrokes are
standardized for Save, Save As, Find, Cut, Copy, Paste undo, redo.

So these keystrokes should work in your applications that are not Web
based applications. (run in Safari).

Enjoy!

Introducing to myself

2018-04-04 Thread Leo Bado

hi everyone,

I just joined this list few days ago.  For some years I have been a
windows user and the last week I got a macbook pro, so I'm totally new
on macos however I had done some stuff on this past days like upgrading
the OS to high sierra.

I think I'm learning fast some concepts but as one can expect I'm
struggleing with others.

I'm aware that ther are some books out there to introduce me to macos
system and even for how to fully use some apps but I don't think I'm
going to buy any of those sooner.

So I expect to learn reading what you guys talk on here and ask in case
I'd need to fill the blanks, of course.

oh yes, my name is Leo.

nice to meet you all of you guys.
