Voiceover default voice confusion

2024-04-16 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hi,

So I open my voiceover Utility and choose speech tab. Then customise languages.
I look at the default language, which is English. Although Alex is speaking,
the button where you choose the voice says Eloquence Fiona. No matter what I
do, I can’’t make it say what it is: Alex. I have 4 more voices configured,
and yet when I use vo+command+shift to switch from voice to voice, Voiceover
says there are no voices available. What’s going on?

Any comments especially from multilingual users appreciated.

Re: Headphones for my SE 2020

2024-03-24 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello,

This model has no headphone jack but uses the lightning connecter. The charging
lightning port doubles as headphone connecter. You will need an adapter
lightning to 3.5 mm headphone adapter.

Best wishes

Reading DAISY books on Mac os Sonoma

Hi,

Is there a way of reading DAISY books on the mac M1 chip? I mean reading using
voiceover and a Braille display? I know there’s Dolphin Easy reader but it
requires subscription which is not cheap.

Re: How to open an App from an unknown developer in Ventura

2024-01-16 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hi Paul,

the way I’ve always gone round this problem is to invoke contextual menu while
focused on the name of the app in the application folder and choosing to open
it from there. You get a warning with the cancel button as the rightmost
element but before the cancel button there will be the “open’ button and you
vo+spacebar on that one. This should do the trick.

Re: How to read pdf or if there is a app

2024-01-07 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hi Tom,

The application Preview is always available on mac OS; you will find it in your
applications folder and most likely on your dock if you press control + F3 key
or control + option + letter D, and then start typing preview, you should land
on it. Press enter and it will open. It is also a default application that
will open if you receive a pdf file and open it.

Need a new Braille display

2023-11-22 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hi,

I’d like your suggestions for a new Braille display at a lower price end on the
market. My Focus 40 blue has died and I need a 32 cell or 40 cell Braille
display with no bells and whistles. Any comments on the Orbit Braille display,
which seems to be more affordable at present?

Many thanks

One Drive blocks access to menu extra in Sonoma

2023-11-19 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hi,

When One Drive is running on my macbook air in Sonoma, when pressing vo+m twice
in order to access menu extra, One Drive window pops up and there’s no way I
can see my menu extra. Could anyone replicate this before I report this to
Apple? Also, is there an alternative way of accessing menu extra with
Voiceover? At present, to access menu extra, I have to quit One Drive. This
is a nuisance.

Re: Google drive on a Mac

2023-11-18 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Lorie,

You need to go to menu extra, find Google drive and vo+space on it. You will
be presented with a number of choices. Press “more” and you should be in the
preferences for Google Drive. There you can determine whether your files sync
and are available off-line.

Best headset to use with navigation apps out and about

2023-11-16 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hi

I’d like to start experimenting with navigation apps. I will need to purchase
a good headset, and I guess this will have to be bone conduction one as I’m
totally blind and need to monitor other sounds in the streets. Could you share
your experience with such? I know many of you use navigation apps to enhance
independent mobility. For me, it’s going to be a tremendous learning curve.

Many thanks

My first ever Zoom call on a mac and I'm really worried

2023-10-30 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hi,

I’ve been sent an invitation to a Zoom meeting in a few days’ time. I’ve got
Zoom installed on my M1 chip macbook air but I’ve not done a Zoom meeting
before. They sent me a link, and then some ID numbers. If I click the link,
will it automatically connect me to the person who issued the invitation? Do I
need to do anything else of importance once in Zoom window? Any tips from more
experienced Zoom users on the mac would be appreciated.

Re: new mac user please help

2014-02-26 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Zoe,

Welcome to the group. I, too, am a Greek speaker and I, too, chose to switch to
Mac because of the many language Apple offers. I've learnt Greek, and in fact,
I'm still continuing my classes with a tutor in Cyprus.

Now to your questions. Isaac has already told you how to switch languages on
the fly. I hope that this is working well for you now.

The second point is more complex, and I will try to explain. My knowledge of
this comes from the very many exchanges I've had over the years with the
members of the group, so I owe it all to them.

The reason why you call up spotlight search is that the shortcut key
combination command+spacebar is assigned to spotlight. You need to disassociate
this combination with spotlight and than assign it or activate it for the input
source. It's a while since I have done it, so forgive me if I make an error.
Someone else on the list may correct me on this.

1. Open system preferences by going to the dock with control+f3. You should
here voiceover say "dock". Once in the dock, you can type three first letters
"sys" to land immediately on system preferences. Press enter. System
preferences will open. You will be probably in the toolbar of system
preferences where you have back forward buttons and search field. Stop
interacting with the toolbar by pressing vo+shift+uparrow and vo + right arrow
when you will here preferences pane.

2. Interact with preference pain and vo+right arrow to find the button
"keyboard" or else start typing the word keyboard and you should land on this
button. Press vo+spacebar on this button to open keyboard preferences.

3. In keyboard preferences you will have several tabs. As you vo+right arrow
through the window, you will hear the word tab and highlighted. The highlighted
tab is th the one which is currently active.

4. Find the tab which says shortcuts. Press vo+spacebar on it to highlighted.
It will now read "highlighted". Continue vo+right arrow to find two tables
where you will need to make choices and perform actions. Remember to interact
with a table you need to press vo+shift+down arrow and to stop interacting you
press vo+shift+uparrow. Once you interact with the table you can vo+down or up
arrow through the rows and vo+left or right arrow to examine each row.

5. Interact with the first table and find the category "spotlight". Once you
land on it, stop interacting with the table. The item "spotlight" will now be
highlighted. Move vo+right to the next table of shortcuts.

6. Interact with the second table and uncheck the boxes next to the spotlight
actions.

7. Stop interacting with the table and move back to the previous table of
"shortcut categories". Interact with it and find the category "input source'.
Stop interacting and move to the shortcuts table

8. Interact with shortcuts table and vo+down arrow until you find previous and
next input source items. To the left of each item there's a checkbox. Check
them and to the right of each item there should be a description of the
shortcut key.

This is the point where my memory fails me. I can't now remember whether I had
assigned command+spacebar to the next input source myself or whether it was
already assigned and I just needed to check the box next to the action item. I
hope the latter is the case. Try this, and if it doesn't work, you will need to
assign the shortcut combination. I hope it won't be necessary.

I did however have to assign a new shortcut to Spotlight. This is maybe for
later.

Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, please ask.

Also, there's a very useful macvisionaries archive page whose url is:
macvisionaries

With best wishes

Simon

Hi,
The new Mavricks OS, I can't seem to make a boot disk of.
The install image is 5.31GB, but yet when I use LionDiskMaker or a program
within the install image called createinstallmedia, both methods failed.
I learned about the createinsallmedia program here
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/10/22/perform-clean-install-os-x-mavericks/
I used the same USB flash drive I used for the latest updates of MountainLion.
An error I got was that a file in the install image was missing, but I don't
understand why, as it was downloaded at least twice.

Hello,

A quick search on the web will give you the solution. I've copied the command
but not the URL:

Basically, use disk utility to format a 8Gb or higher USB stick or SD. It has
just worked for me. I copied the command from the file and pasted it in a
terminal. I'm just about to install cleanly. It worked for me but do it at your
own risk.

Then:

Run this in terminal and wait about 20 minutes:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\
Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled
--applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction

You should see something like this:

Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 100%...
Copying installer files to disk...
Copy complete.
Making disk bootable...
Copying boot files...
Copy complete.
Done.

You can then boot up from the USB by holding down the option key, then install
the GM from the USB.

Note that this will also install a recovery partition (which osxdaily's method
doesn't do).

Re: Apple Bluetooth keyboard

2012-07-24 Thread Simon Cavendish
I have learnt them from people on the list. Has control+f3 shortcut worked for
you? I understand this combination and similar like this, for instance,
control+f8 to go to the menu bar where you have battery charge level, bluetooth
status, wifi status, etc are not voiceover specific but general shortcut keys.

I will describe to you what I do to achieve this on macbook air.

Whilst in a mailbox, interact with the list of messages. Then press
fn+vo+shift+left arrow to go to the first row of the table of messages and
fn+vo+right arrow to go to the last row in the table of messages.

hope this helps.

Re: File versions

2012-07-22 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Joseph,

I have pasted below a description by Tim Kilburn on how to revert to earlier
versions of a document in TextEdit. I have found it by doing a search in the
Googlegroups pages. I will post copy the link to that particular page for your
information.

Hope this will help

See below for Tim's post.

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topicsearchin/macvisionaries/file$20versions$20textedit$20kilburn/macvisionaries/_DyhmXR5eI4Simon

"If your volume supports tracking versions in TextEdit, then you should be able
to do the following: clickable

• Open the document.
• Either Stop Interacting with the Scroll area, then navigate to the Versions
menu and choose Browse Versions, or go under the File menu and choose Revert.
• In either case you will probably need to use the Window Chooser (VO-f2-f2) to
get a list of documents.
• You can select one of them, read through it and determine which one you wish
to use.
• After you've determined which one is best, use the Window Chooser again to
select the Version Browser.
• Select the correct one and then press the Revert button."

Somebody asked about resizing bootcamp partition with Voiceover

2012-07-17 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Listers,

I am aware that recently somebody was asking questions about resizing a
bootcamp partition using Voiceover.

I have today received a response from Accessibility team at Apple to their
questions. He or she must have clearly e-mailed Accessibility. They sent a
response to me in error. I have of course informed them. However, if the person
wishes to e-mail me off list, I shall forward their response to them in case
Apple accessibility team will not resend their response. Please write to me
very very soon as I am not comfortable to to keep this e-mail on my system. It
is obviously meant for another.

With best wishes

Re: updating flash?

Donna,

I run Lion and in system preferences on the far right of the preferences pain,
you have various buttons which relate to non apple products like flash. If you
have had flash installed previously, you will find the button there. Activate

Ultralingua electronic dictionary and Mountain Lion

2012-07-13 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Listers,

Ultralingua electronic dictionary, whose developers have been committed to its
accessibility with Voiceover, is preparing for Mountain Lion as I am being
informed in their newsletter. Below I'm pasting a piece of the newsletter which
actually mentions Voiceover. I'm so excited that Voiceover actually begins to
get a mention in a standard product. It's good to see that we are not being
ignored. I was very much involved with the developers of Ultralingua some years
ago in order to make them aware of the then incompatibility of this rather
exciting multilingual dictionary, and I am so glad that they are still
including us in their thinking. Here comes the quote:
"
Keeping Up With the Mountain Lions
With Apple's upcoming release of OS X Mountain Lion, we are updating our Mac
Software to have Mountain Lion compatibility. Version 7.3.2 for the Mac App
Store will be available soon!

Along with Mountain Lion compatibility, this new version also includes

Minor bug fixes with VoiceOver
Button next to language drop-down menu to make switching search directions
easier
Ability to immediately search by typing upon launch of the app

You can find this update for the Mac App Store under the updates badge when
it’s ready.

"
Best wishes

Re: Re-setting Vo in Safari

2012-07-10 Thread Simon Cavendish
As regards new OS installation, if you choose to migrate your settings from the
previous version of your OS which you can do via the migration assistant
application from either your time machine backup or another mac computer, then
your Voiceover settings will be important too. If, however, you choose to do a
clean installation which erases your hard drive, then you will have to
configure your Voiceover again unless, of course, you copy the exported
Voiceover settings onto a usb pen drive and import them from there. Your
exported Voiceover settings file is like another file which you can choose to
export to a folder or drive of your choosing.

You are right about this list: we have all learnt from each other, and I have
certainly been generously supported through my tribulations with Voiceover and
the mac OS when I switched from Windows.

With best wishes

Re: Re-setting Vo in Safari

2012-07-10 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Johnny,

Open Voiceover utility with vo+f8. Then with vo+m, go to your menu bar and move
to the right to find "file". Then down arrow to open the menu. If you arrow
down the options you have there, you will find a few choices for resetting
various preferences of Voiceover. I've not done it myself - have had no need
for it, but it seems fairly close to what you want.

Notice that under the same "file' menu item, you have an option to export your
setup preferences into a file and save it where you wish on your hard drive so
that you may import them again if something goes wrong and you want to get back
to the best setup you had.

Navigating in Safari takes a lot of learning but you will get there.

Hope this helps.

Re: Tips for Using Track Changes

2012-07-09 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Harry,

Regarding speaking the attributes of the text you are reading, press
control+shift+v and you will find yourself in the dialogue box where yo you can
adjust various values for Voiceover. One of them is speak text attributes.
There are other useful functions of Voiceover you can change here fairly
quickly while working with documents. Press escape to get out of the place.
Have a good look.

Others will add to this no doubt. There's a work around tables in documents
which Ann Roberson uses successfully but I have not tried it as I have so far
had no use for it but it should work. It is not simple but for now, she has
been able to do it. You could try and search this group's archive to find her
posts. Or maybe she will kindly respond to your questions.

With best wishes

Re: Tips for Using Track Changes

2012-07-08 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Harry,

I understand from the many expert messages that Ann has been posting on this
list regarding iWork suite, that sadly track changes does not work with
Voiceover. Ann is a very knowledgeable person in the matter, and had there been
a work around, she would have found it. Maybe she will herself comment on your
difficulty.

Best wishes

Stacey,

As far as I can remember, there is an off and on button in the time machine
preference window. Make sure to click the on button. Before you do, check that
the lock to prevent further changes is not on. Yo You will find it on the right

You need to choose in time machine preferences your new disk, and the time

Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?

2012-07-03 Thread Simon Cavendish
I'd like to have Braille tables for some languages fixed in Mountain Lion. I've
been writing to Accessibility about it a few times but ominously have not had a
single response to reassure me that they are going to do so. Braille tables
swapping on te the fly would be a good feature, very much like being able to
switch languages.

Re: Bookmarks

2012-06-27 Thread Simon Cavendish
Open Safari.

Move left along the bookmark bar (provided it's showing, and if not, press
command+shift+b) and look for the place which Voiceover reports as "show all
bookmarks, unchecked checkbox". Check this box.

Now in place of your usual html page, you will have two tables. The first table
you come to is a table of your folders which are categories of bookmarks you
have by default or which you would have created yourself. Interact with the
table to choose the folder where your bookmark is.

Move right beyond the search field and you will come across another table which
lists all the bookmarks in the selected folder. Arrow up and down with vo until
you come to the bookmark you wish to delete. Press delete and the bookmark is
gone. Stop interacting and uncheck the checkbox which reveals your bookmarks.

Hope this helps.

Re: Creating a list of all the headings and links on a webpage

2012-04-10 Thread Simon Cavendish
When on a web page, press vo+u and you will be presented with a choice of
elements in categories. You can then use your right and left arrow keys to move
from category to category, e.g. headings, links, visited links, form controls,
tables, regions, etc. Once you find the category you wish, use up and down
arrow to read the headings or links within the category and then press enter on
the one you want. You will find yourself on the element you want to examine. If
you don't want to make any choices, just press escape to get out of the list of
categories. Also, remember that item chooser menu which you call up with vo+i,
will list all the elements/objects on the page, and if you know what you are
after, you can just start typing the first letters of the element/object and
you will be on it. Press enter to land on it. Press escape if you don't want to
make a choice, press backspace while in item chooser menu to start typing a new
string if you have failed to find what you are looking for or if you change
your mind and want to look for a different string.

Hope this helps.

Re: Turkish language and the Mac.

2012-03-07 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Nektarios,

I've done a quick research for you and below I paste a link to a web page which
seems to give a lot of information on the Turkish alphabet. I've not gone
through the page thoroughly but it seems that it may be what you are looking
for. Also, if you have text input icon enabled in your menu which you activate
with control plus f8 shortcut combination, when you down arrow the text input
menu you come across keyboard viewer. Now first you have to choose Turkish
keyboard, then you need to activate your keyboard viewer and then you can use
vo+right or left arrow to go through the entire keyboard of a particular chosen
language to identify where particular characters on the keyboard are. When you
activate keyboard viewer you start from the escape button, which is of course
on the extreme left hand side top row of keys. With each press of vo+right
arrow you move to the right along the top row and once you reach the end of the
row you will jump to the next row below on the keyboard again to the extreme
left side and so on. To deactivate keyboard viewer, press control+f8 and
vo+arrow to the text input menu and down arrow to keyboard viewer and this time
it will be shown as hide keyboard viewer which you vo+space on or press enter
key. The page address I've mentioned is below.

All the best

Re: Turkish language and the Mac.

2012-03-06 Thread Simon Cavendish
Nektarios,

First of all, you need to go to system preferences and choose "language and
text" button and then the text input tab, which is the last tab. If you move to
the right, you will come across a table of all available keyboards. You need to
check the box in the first column, next to the Turkish keyboard. Once you have
more than one keyboard enabled, unless you have done that before, it would be
helpful if you enabled text input icon to appear in your menu bar so that you
can always go there with control f8 and change your keyboards. There is a way
of changing your keyboards by using a shortcut key but you may already know
this. If not, contact me, and I shall try to help. I've just tried to speak to
you on Skype, but as before, when I try to connect to you, the connection gets
dropped.

Hope this helps. Good luck with Turkish.

Dear Jurgen,

I am afraid I had made the wretched mistake of updating Tables to its latest
version as I moved to Lion so I do not have the Tables version where editing
cells was easier and worked better. I too like Tables a lot. It has quite a few
shortcut keys that seem to work like for selecting cells and it will also tell
you if the cell you have input text is clipped by another cell to the right or
left which may be significant.

Maybe you could try and e-mail the Tables designer as well to let him know that
we are having some issues. I found his e-mail on the Tables website but I can't
find it now and I will be off to work shortly.

With best wishes

Simon

Jurgen, changing sheets in Tables has always worked for me by pressing command
+ option + right or left arrow key. The larger the sheet the longer it takes
though for Tables to change to the next sheet. In the latest update, again you
do not necessarily know that the sheet has been changed so you have to try and
move your cursor to see weather you can start reading it.

 Hello Rafael,

thanks for your hints. So far Tables works fine.

But what I meant was how to edit a cell and change inserted content. That
 doesn't work here for me.

As far as I could find out I have to enter the edit mode of a chosen cell
by pressing F2. VO anounces "edit". But then it's not possible to read or
delete single characters or to navigate through the content of a cell just
by using the arrow keys. Of course I can navigate by using VO + arrow keys
but. I should say that I use a sheet like a two dimensional notepad. I
don't use it as a calculator and so I don't need formulas in a cell. But
to take notes and so I enter a lot of text in it. So it's quite important
for me to delete parts of the text and enter new content.

So: How do you delete parts of text in a cell and how to enter just one
word in a text of a cell? Deleting a whole cell is easily possible.

 Thanks and all the best
 Jürgen

Re: Tables [was:] Re: numbers

2012-02-23 Thread Simon Cavendish
When focused on the cell you wish to change data in, press F2 key which will
put you in the editing mode. Then you should be able to use your cursor keys.
Once done, press tab. In the previous version of Tables, this worked very well.
The latest update has rendered this important function more difficult. I
noticed it as soon as I had installed the latest version. I reported it to the
developer but had no answer from him. I only hope that he is going to improve
it. In the past, he was rather sympathetic to Voiceover users. I was
disappointed with this negative change as Tables worked for me far better than
Numbers.

Sorry I have no better news.

If you are using an Intel-based Mac, then the first thing to do when you
open the Tables application is to get the cursor out of the table. Press
Shift, Control, Option, up-arrow together, in order to get out of the
table where the cursor is pointing. Press this key combination again to
get out of the spreadsheet. Do these things first, or the following
 instructions won't make sense.

Basically, there are two ways to read a cell's contents in Tables. The
first way is to place the cursor over the field in which one enters
numbers, formulae, and so on. If you choose this option, make sure VO is
not locked, so that you can use the arrow keys to move from cell to cell
(i.e., left arrow to move to the left, bottom arrow to move down, etc.).
This is a simple option that allows you to navigate from cell to cell, to
read each cell's contents, and to enter data into individual cells, all
 from the data-entry field.

The second way to move around in Tables is somewhat more complicated. To
make things easier, first lock VO (by pressing control-option-semicolon).
Next, enter the spreadsheet, by pressing shift and the down-arrow key
together. At this level, you will be able to move the VO cursor with the
arrow keys and read the letters designating the columns (i.e., Column A,
Column B, etc.), as well as the row numbers (i.e., Row 1, Row 2, etc.).
To access the individual cells, navigate to the table (VO says "table when
you've found it). With VO still locked, press the shift and down-arrow
keys together again. That will put you in the table of cells, from which
point onward you can just use the arrow keys to navigate from cell to cell.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I'll
do my best to try to answer them.

 Cordially,
 Rafael

Re: Selecting text in Safari

Bill, I interact with the text on a web page, press vo+enter and then start
selecting using vo + arrow keys. When I've selected what I wish, I press
vo+enter again and then command+c to copy to clipboard. While you are selecting

anyone done that before? A few minutes would do. I'd appreciate some brief
instructions. What application would I have to use to do this?

Many thanks, Simon

Re: how can I rename files in finder without having to go through get info?

2011-12-11 Thread Simon Cavendish
I'm not sure whether my method is going to be too slow for you but in Finder, I
hit enter on the name of the file, which allows me to edit its name. Once you
hit enter on the name of a file, be careful because the name is highlighted so
if you start typing immediately, you will delete the existing name in its
entirety. If you move any of the cursor keys the highlight is gone and you can
use the usual key combinations for moving in a text field, i.e. by letter, word
to the beginning or end of line. Once you have edited the file name, hit enter
key again and you are done. If you change your mind and wish to leave the name
of a file as it is, just press escape.

Hope this helps.

I use a Greek keyboard and it works fine so does the Welsh keyboard. I'm not
sure about the Chinese. But if you go into the table of available keyboards,

2011-12-07 Thread Simon Cavendish
You can indeed change your keyboard language on the fly. First, however, you
need to choose the keyboards that you wish to have available via system
preferences/language and text. Once you find language and text button in system
preferences, activate it and you will have four tabs there. Select the last
one. Move to the right and you will encounter a table of all available language
inputs. Interact with the table, and check the checkboxes for the languages you
wish to have. These language keyboards should then appear in your text input
menu in your menu bar, activated with control f8 shortcut key.

You can change your keyboard layouts via this menu but you could also activate
the shortcut key for this under system preferences. The trouble is that the
shortcut key for changing your text input clashes with the shortcut keys for
activating spotlight search. However, since you can activate spotlight by
pressing vo+m 3 times in succession, I have decided to deactivate the spotlight
search shortcut keys, command+spacebar for previous input source, and
command+shift+spacebar for next input source.

To do this, return to your language and text options under system preferences,
and there you will find a button 'keyboard shortcuts". Activate it. There you
will find two tables. The first one enables you to choose shortcut keys for
spotlight. Vo+down arrow in the table until you hear spotlight. Then stop
interacting with the table and move to the next table where, after interacting
with it, you can uncheck the boxes for the spotlight searches.

Then go back to the previous table of shortcut categories and this time vo
arrow down to keyboard text input or something like that. Stop interacting and
move to the right to interact with the table of available shortcuts. Check the
boxes referring to previous and next input keyboard, and double check the key
sequences by moving to the right hand side column where you will hear the
command+spacebar and command option spacebar for the next input source. Then
you are done.

Now each time you press these keyboard shortcuts, voiceover will announce "new
keyboard layout so and so". Note that the previous keyboard layout shortcut
command+space, moves you between the two recently used keyboards. So if you
have 3, for instance, British, German and French, but recently, you used
French, it will give you French layout. While in French, if you press the same
command again, it will take you back to your British layout. If you do it
again, it will give you French again. If you want German, you will have to use
the next keyboard shortcut command option spacebar to hear your keyboard as you
file past them.

Occasionally, Voiceover stopped announcing new keyboard layout for some unknown
reason and I had to restart my computer but that doesn't happen often and I use
these shortcut keys all the time. As for spellchecking in other languages, I
have never tried it. I didn't think it was possible.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes

Simon

Re: Browsing with Safari has become extremely difficult

2011-12-01 Thread Simon Cavendish
Try lightening for mac. It's a much slimmer application, and once you work out
how to use it, it performs better than Safari. I tend to use it more and more.
It gives me less of a "busy" problem that frustrates me so much in Safari.

Re: lightning browser

2011-11-21 Thread Simon Cavendish
I've been using Lightening for a long time. You always have to move to the html
content to interact with it and then you can read it as normal. On my macbook
air, I use the shortcut function +vo keys + right arrow to take me to the
rightmost object on the page which is usually html. I then interact with it and
all is well. Lightening is pretty fast and doesn't have as many "busy" issues
as safari.

Re: embossing Braille from a Mac, Possible or impossible?

2011-11-09 Thread Simon Cavendish
I used to use an old Everest printer (from the year 2000), and it worked fine
to a point. Whatever embosser you choose, and I can't recommend any, had better
have a usb connection.

I do not think Duxbury is compatible with Mac computers. I used to use Louis -
an open source piece of software produced by A member of this list. I think a
search in Google should take you to the page from which you can download it.
(Louis is free.) Louis was okay for me simple tasks, and it seems to work with
many languages. Louis also comes with and emboss programme called emboss.app
which you will need to emboss your files previously translated into Braille by
Louis.

There is a mac programme from IndexBraille for braille translations but I'm not
sure whether it would work with Voiceover. You could ask IndexBraille as well
as for the list of compatible embossers with Indexbraille translation software.

I hope that someone on the list can also add to my remarks. I think Anouk does
or used to use Braille but I'm not sure whether he is following this
conversation.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

Best wishes

Re: Question About Frames

2011-11-07 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello,

I've just been to a page where there are some frames, and when I press
vo+shift+m, I get a choice to open it in a new window as you said. At the same
time, on that page, there is another frame that contains an advert, and the
same command does not give me the choice. I can only suggest the old method to
select and copy text in Safari by doing the following:
1. Interact with the frame with vo+shift+down arrow. Then interact with the
text within the frame in the same way.
2. Execute the command to select text by pressing vo+return.
3. Start selecting text using vo+arrow keys.
4. Once you have selected what you wanted, press again vo+return to stop
selecting.
5. Now press command+c to copy the text you've selected and paste it into
TextEdit new document window.
If that won't work, maybe more experienced group members could help.

Best luck

Simon

Re: Help with touch pad command

2011-11-03 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello,

I've just tried this command and it works. I have tried it while reading a
message in Mail. For this command to work while the message is open, I had to
interact with the text body of the message. The only thing is, that choosing
between line sentence reading mode, VoiceOver reads in the same fashion, i.e.
by line. It doesn't read by sentence when sentence mode is chosen. Might it be
a bug? Can anyone reproduce it?

Re: key echo rate?

2011-10-30 Thread Simon Cavendish
Do you mean by "key echo" that you want to hear or not as the case may be each
key as you type? I think You should be able to set it in VoiceOver utility
activated by vo+f8. In VoiceOver utility choose verbosity and then text tab and
you can set your key echo to what you wish.

hope this helps.

Re: Did Lion update break my mail behavior?

2011-10-30 Thread Simon Cavendish
Johnny,

My mail behaves occasionally in the manner you have described, i.e. Voiceover
won't read the message: it's stuck at the beginning of the message and doesn't
say anything. But it doesn't happen every time. I've repaired permissions
several times. I don't know - and perhaps Scott could chime in if he has the
time - there is another application that might clear things up a little. Scott
mentions Cocktail but I'm afraid I haven't got a clue what it is. I will do
some search for it in Google. I, too, would like to avoid the strange behaviour
in reading messages that you have described.

Best wishes

Re: repair permission

2011-10-28 Thread Simon Cavendish
Joseph,

Permissions are repaired automatically without you having to do anything at
all. While permissions are being repaired, if you vo+arrow round the area, you
will result table. When you interact with it, you can see what is being
repaired - not that I understand it.

It is good practice to repair permissions every so often, especially after
installing or removing applications or software update.

Re: repair permission

2011-10-26 Thread Simon Cavendish
I don't quite understand the difference other than "repair permissions" seems
to have something to do with the bits of software knowing where all the other
bits are, and repair disk may have something to do with the sectors on the disk
within which information is written. But I may be talking rubbish.

Gerry,

I've only done a bootable usb drive. I'm posting below some notes on creating a

How to burn a Lion boot disc
by KELLY HODGKINS • JUNE 7, 2011
READ LATER

Mac OS X Lion will debut in July and this handy set of instructions from Egg
Freckles will let you create a boot disc for installation. OS X Lion will be
distributed via the Mac App Store and you can download the installer files to
your hard drive. Once you have the installer files, follow these steps to
create your very own boot disc:
• Use Finder to locate the Mac OS X Lion installer, right-click
and select "Show Package Contents"
• Find the SharedSupport folder and look for a file names
"InstallESD.dmg". This is the Lion Boot Disc image.
• Copy the "InstallESD.dmg" file to another folder such as your
desktop.
• Launch Disk Utility and click the burn button
• Select the "InstallESD.dmg" copy as the image to burn, insert a
DVD, and in a few minutes you will have a brand new Lion Boot Disc.
These instructions won't do much for everyone right now since OS X Lion is
still in the hands of the developers. Bookmark, Evernote or Instapaper this
post for future use. You'll be glad you did when Lion rolls out next month.

Re: Scanners and OCR

2011-09-06 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Paul,

I've been using Abbyy FineReaderExpress for a few years in multilingual
environment, and it is a very good piece of OCR software. I don't use it to
scan my multilingual documents as my scanner is 11 years' old and thus
incompatible with FineReaderExpress. But I use it for recognition the images I
take with Vuescan, and it does a good job indeed. The one great feature of
FineReader is its ability to recgonise up to 3 languages in one document, and
its ability to cope with orientation. The one problem I have with it when
scanning text arranged in columns.

Hope this helps.

With best wishes

Your best and most accessible scanning choice for the price is DocuScan
Plus. You can download a trial version from the App Store and register it
for a 7 day trial period. The price is $299 and gives you both the Apple
version and the QWindows version too, if you need it. It works well with
VoiceOver, is simple to use, has lots of power features for all kinds of
scanning, recognizing PDF files, and converting scanned text to RTF, TXT,
create MP3 file of the text, saving as a formated Braille file, and turn
scaned text into a Daisy book.

It can be used with a variety of scanners or you can purchase the HoverCam
digital camera that can be purchased along with the software from Sero
 Tech.

 Subject: Scanners and OCR

 Hello all,

Would like to get some advice on using scanners with a Mac (running Lion
if this is relevant). I occasionally need to scan printed documents to
send by email or for archival purposes. Does Mac OS have its own utility
or app for working with a scanner or are we reliant upon manufacturer's
own drivers/software (which, from past experience on Windows, is very hit
and miss as far as accessibility is concerned).

Also, what experience do people have of scanning a document and using OCR
to get VoiceOver (or whatever) to read out the contents of the document?

 Cheers,

 Mark

Re: opening links in email on mac air

2011-09-04 Thread Simon Cavendish
Jack,

Once you open the message, vo+left arrow until you hear Voiceover announce
"message headers group". Then interact with the group with vo+shift+down arrow.
You will then hear Voiceover say as you examine the area with v+arrow keys,
"message header text" and "details link". position your vo cursor on the
"message header text" portion and interact with it again by pressing
vo+shift+down arrow. Then vo+left arrow until you can't move further to the
left. You will now hear Voiceover spelling the name of the sender. Use
vo+shift+m to bring up contextual menu. You can now move up and down the list
to make choices of copying the address or adding it to the address book or
replying to sender etc.

Once you are done, stop interacting with the area, you may have to do it twice
and return to your message.

As for the links in the body of the message, once you hear Voiceover announce
that there is a link on a particular line, use vo+left and right arrow to
locate the link more precisely. voiceover will normally announce "link" before
each word which belongs to the link. Then interact with the text with
vo+shift+down arrow and you can then press vo+spacebar to activate the link or
vo+shift+m to bring up contextual menu.

HOpe this helps.

When in the body of the e-mail message, listen for Voiceover saying "link. Then
try to interact with the text with vo+shift+down arro and move vo cursor rightt

Dear Greg,

It is good to hear from you. Thank you very much for the gift of the
audioconversion application. It's very generous.

Here in Wales UK, things are okay. I am still working, and I am mad about my
Mac computer and iPad. Truly hooked although I do worry sometimes about the
fact that occasionally Voiceover is not as stable and sure-footed as it used to
be under Leopard.

Re: Multilingual Braille tables under Lion

2011-08-31 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello Paul,

I really do not know the technical details apart from the fact that under Snow
Leopard, I use the US Unicode braille table written by Archie Robertson from
Cecimac.org, and it handles both Greek and English beautifully using computer 8
dot braille. You might try and contact Archie via their www.cecimac.org
website. Anne Robertson has also taken part in this thread so you may wish to
contact her: she's a professional translator as well as computer programmer.
Archie, her husband, has done an awful lot of unpaid work on the Braille tables
for various languages for Snow Leopard.

In the same thread here, Geoff writes that his wife has managed to install
Archie's tables under Lion but Archie seems to imply that you cannot do so. I'm
not sure what the answer is. I will write to Geoff offline to see how his wife
has achieved this.

To all of you who are having problems with Braille tables under Lion, please
let Apple Accessibility know but please also acknowledge their work they have
done for blind users thus far. The inclusion of multilingual Braille tables
under Lion - imperfect as it may be - is a huge step forward, and I personally
have been campaigning and pressuring Apple to do so since 2007. Archie
Robertson was by far first to help me in the then impossible task of making it
a reality for me to read in Greek, Russian and other European languages in
Braille. His tables were a real boon for me.

I'm sorry, Paul, I can't be more specific. Your knowledge in this area is
greater than mine.

With best wishes

When you encounter a link which is to download a file, focus on it and press
vo+shift+m to get contextual menu and arrow down to hear download linked file
and / or download linked file as. This will give you a choice to download the
file or the latter will give you a choice a specify where to download your file

Re: Safari help sorly needed

2011-08-31 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello,

Please do not feel offended by these basic questions but make sure, when
copying n application from the downloads folder, that it has the extension .app
after its name. Then - and I think only then - will the application be pasted
into your application folder. If - once you have located your application in
the downloads folder - you hear .dmg after its name, you need to open it first
with command+down arrow. This will probably result in the following: go to your
desktop where you will find a folder (usually having the word image in it)
which has the name of your application. Interact with it, and you should find
there the name of your application with the .app extension. Copy it with
command+c and then paste into application folder. Be aware that some .dmg
packets when they appear as image browser on your desktop may have application
alias already included in them. This is just a shortcut to your application
folder which, when you press command+downarrow, will open your application
folder straight away. Som programmes when downloaded have extension .pkg. They
also will be placed as image browser on your desktop when you open them with
command+down arrow. These ,pkg things usually include an installer application
which you have to run by pressing command+downarrow to open them, and follow
onscreen instructions.

Please forgive me if this is something you know, or if it has already been
posted here. Just trying to be helpful.

With best wishes

Multilingual Braille tables under Lion

2011-08-30 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Listers,

This message is primarily for those who use Braille with a Braille display
under Lion and who need to use Braille in foreign languages, especially those
languages that use non-Latin characters. In my case, it is Greek and Russian.

I am not sure whether anyone has noticed but under lion, although Apple
accessibility has provided lots of Braille tables for foreign languages - as
Anne Robertson has already mentioned - some of them are outdated. Additionally,
the current Braille tables, do not include a unicode Braille table. The result
is that if one is working in a document that contains two different languages,
say English and Greek, or if one is working on two documents at the same time
as you would in translation, you have to keep on switching Braille tables in
Voiceover utility which as you can imagine is bothersome and makes translation
work impossible. Similarly, if you are reading the bilingual text, and you have
your Braille table set to English, all the Greek text will be invisible to the
Braille display and you want be able to read it.

Under Snow Leopard, we had Braille tables provided by Archie Robertson from
Cecimac - free gift from this generous person. It had a unicode Braille table
as well as many other language tables, and this problem did not arise there.
The unicode Braille table was able to handle many languages at the same time.
So I could comfortably read an Anglo-Greek text in Braille.

Sadly, under Lion, Archie's tables cannot be added nor can the existing tables
be modified. I've written to Accessibility team to ask them to make a
modification and addition of tables possible, or else include a unicode 8 dot
table in further developments. I was wondering whether others on the list have
a similar concern, and if yes, would they also write to accessibility. The job
that the Accessibility Team have done so far is absolutely great - and I have
made it profusely clear when writing to them. But this little step is missing,
and this step is also crucial for those who need to engage in the study of some
foreign languages, and/or translation work.

Thank you all for reading this

Simon

I saw some posts on the list a while ago, reviewing favourably an application

Maybe you could try it out, or else look for some earlier posts using the

Re: VMware fusion and JAWS

2011-08-18 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello,

I've been trying to follow your very helpful instructions to remap an insert
key in Windows running in VMWare fusion so that I can use it as Jaws key. You
suggest choosing right option key to become the insert key. However, I do not
see an right option key choice in the list, just option key. And when I
remapped it to insert key, I couldn't then use it as a regular Alt key to open
menus in Windows and Windows applications. If this topic is not appropriate for
the list, if you kindly wish to continue with it, please e-mail off list.

Re: Another mail question with Lion

2011-08-02 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello,

I've just tried to do this. This is what I did.

I vo+left arrow to the message header area. I then interacted with it. Once you
interact, I moved with vo+right once and landed on "details" link. Voiceover
actually says here "link". I pressed vo+spacebar on this link. This resulted in
being able to see the senders address. I then routed my mouse cursor to vo with
vo+command+f5 and performed mouse click with vo+shift+spacebar. This opened a
menu for me which gives you a choice of replying to sender or adding the
sender's details to your address book. Hope this helps.

Rafaeel,

I have not tried it myself as I haven't got a multi-column document to test it,

Re: problem selecting text on Facebook walls

2011-04-30 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Ray,

Try using copy last spoken phrase to the cpliboard command vo+shipft+c
immediatley after Voiceover has spoken the text or even while it is speaking. I
use this feature regualry with good results, and then copy the spoken text into
a text edit window.

hope this will help a little.

Re: Technical AirPort question

2011-04-25 Thread Simon Cavendish
I understand from reading "take control books" k- and I am currently struggling
with setting up a similar network to yours, Scott, that iPad has not the
capacity to connect to 5ghz radio as it is still 8211G rather than N. With
Express, it has as you point out a dual capacity and it should switch
autimatically unless you do not allow it in the configurations. I too find the
configuring troublesome as I can't seem to access certain options when
extending the network.

I will see what else I can find.

Re: Facebook app now even more accessible

2011-04-24 Thread Simon Cavendish
Thanks, Krister, this is good news. Does the same apply to iPad? ALso, can you
give me - if it is not too much - a short description of how you use Chat on
the iPad with voiceover?

Best wishes

Oh, thanks, Neil, that's great. I'm still very much a learner.
