Itunes airplay is usually the only way to stream music and other audio to your airport express, or to your airplay speakers. Outside itunes, you're out of luck. Your iphone can do more as far as I have experienced, but not your mac. Well here's a solution. It's not in the app store, because these are things Apple doesn't want you to do. It's called airfoil. I picked up that name in the mac power users podcast. If you google it you'll find it. So what does it do? Basically, it lets you choose your sound output to play music on, as if airplay restrictions just were not there. So if you have a stereo connected to an airport express, just turn that on, start airfoil, choose your airport express as the destination inside airfoil, and choose the audio source, in my case that is the vlc media player also from the airfoil program window, and start playing. Rather than the sound coming from your internal mac speakers, it now sends it to the airport express. Any file can thus be played, without bothering with itunes and its library. But there's even more. I tried it, and it is a perfect solution if you want to hear what goes on in the room that the mac is sitting in, all around your house, as long as you have a windows or mac computer, or airplay speakers where you are listening, because airfoil can also take your internal mac mike, and transmit that off to an airport express. Even better, to another mac in the same lan. This is done by running a supplementary little app called airfoil speakers, on the mac that you would like to listen on. So, you can have a mac transmiting music from any media player, or from its internal mike, and have it sent to another mac, or airplay devices. There is also an airfoil speaker app available for windows, so that even a windows computer can become a destination for your audio. I thought that was just awesome. It just works. The airfoil interface is not accessible everywhere, but if you study it for a minute or five you'll probably love it. Airfoil is not free. Preview versus skim?
The subject says it all. What are the pros and cons please. Thanks! - Original Message - From: Esther mori...@mac-access.net To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, August 04, 2012 2:43 AM Subject: Re: merging several PDF files into one. Hi Chris, It's actually possible to merge PDF files with Preview if you can drag and drop to the thumbnails in the sidebar, but I don't think this works with VoiceOver drag and drop -- at the very least it would be difficult. If you have Skim downloaded there's an embedded SkimPDF command line tool that lets you perform operations like merging and extracting PDF files in Terminal. If you look under: /Applications/Skim.app/Contents/SharedSupport/ there are three applications: displayline, skimnotes, and skimpdf. You need to copy skimpdf to somewhere in your default path with executable permission using your Admin password. Open Terminal and type or paste in: sudo cp -p /Applications/Skim.app/Contents/SharedSupport/skimpdf /usr/bin/ and press Return. You'll be prompted to authorize with your Admin password. The cp -p does the copy preserving permissions so you can execute the commands. Then to merge two pdf files from the command line you can type: skimpdf merge file1.pdf file2.pdf merged.pdf The specification of an output file like merged.pdf is optional. I think if you don't specify an output file, the second file just gets appended to the first, but you should experiment. You can also find out the syntax of commands by typing: skimpdf help For more information, take a look at the SourceForge wiki for Skim: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/skim-app/index.php?title=Main_Page Then use the link for the SkimPDF Command Line Tool to find out more. There's also a specific SourceForge wiki for the SkimPDF command line tool: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/skim-app/index.php?title=SkimPDF_Tool There are probably other sources of merge tools around the web, but this works if you already have Skim anyway, and are comfortable with the Terminal command line. I also know almost beyond a doubt that preview will not do the trick either. Someone correct me should I be wrong. I almost wonder if Pages would be able to do the trick. It's also a good idea to run Software Update to make certain you have the most current updates for Lion. Now, once you've done this, just purchase Mountain Lion. It will download and your system will re-boot. You may have to turn on VO when your system restarts, but you will then have speech through the remainder of the installation process. Airfoil is awesome. If you have VO running and zoom set to follow the keyboard focus you will find that the command tab to switch between apps becomes unreliable and navigating the menu bar with the arrow keys is also unreliable. Also I don't like the way it tracks and works with reading text. I'd like better colour options and keyboard commands to adjust them, or at least for the invert brightness keyboard command not to conflict with a Voice Over command. You would think that Apple would be able to sort out keyboard command conflicts between two of their own accessibility utilities. I am sure there are work arounds for some of these but a work around isn't the same as fixing the problem. For example the menu navigation issue I mentioned does not occur if you use swipes on the trackpad with trackpad commander to navigate the menu. It only happens with the arrow keys - strange but there you are. If I used it regularly I would probably come across more of the issues. It really doesn't seem to me that apple intended the two utilities to work together or at least that this was an edge case. It would seem to me that they expected people to use either option exclusively and if so, they are probably right. Most people probably do use one or the other. Since I'm not having problems with FaceTime, I have reason to believe that the settings pertaining to Wi-Fi and Airplane Mode are correct. Any thoughts? Re: iPhone 4S: is it really awesome?
1. I can't speak for Siri myself, but here in the UK I know it can't help you locate businesses for example restaurants. 2. I believe the text dictation feature works for all except password text fields for obvious reasons. 3. The camera on the 4s is 8 megapixel compared to the 3gs which is only 3. So performance will no doubt be a huge improvement. There is also a front facing camera which is useful for features like Facetime. 4. I can't comment on VoiceOver and Siri interacting together sorry. 5. Because of the dual core A5 processor in the 4s, I have no doubts that VoiceOver will be very responsive on the 4s compared to the 3gs. 6. Can't comment on the battery sorry. I have heard in the past that there were battery issues on some iPhone 4s. Hope any or all of this helps. Christopher Hallsworth On 08/05/2012 20:16, Venkatesh Potluri wrote: Hi listers. I am sorry for a long email. the 4S is an expensive purchase so I wish to be very sure before I decide. 1. I watched many videos of siri. from that, I learn it is really good in speech recognition. well, since you will be using it daily, what do you think about it's recognition capabilities? How good is it at texting? I also saw a couple of posts in this list about vo and siri not working properly together. Does it really prove to be inconvenient? 2. text dictation. I read that there is an option to say the text we wish to type in an edit field on pressing a microphone button on the keyboard. Is this only in the messages app or works in any edit field (even in 3rd party apps like Facebook and whatsapp messenger)? and, how is the accuracy of the recognition? 3. Looktel apps on 3GS vs 4S I am planning to purchase the money reader and the recognizer in the near future. Is there a significant performance difference in terms of recognition time and accuracy? 4. VO and battery in 3Gs vs 4S since updating to iOs5, VO lags quite often. It responds late when I move my finger on the touch keyboard and by the time I remove my finger, it enters a different character from what I actually intended to enter. Does this happen in the 4S too? and how is the battery life of the phone after the 5.1 update? Your suggestions would be of great value and will help me in making the right choice. iPad was Re: blindmicemegamall movie vault and illegal file-sharing allegation
I might get an iPad in the future. I hear the speakers are better than even the iPhone which don't get me wrong is excellent but the more the merrier I say. Also because the screen is large I may enjoy using iOS more as typing on the iPad I predict will be less laborious thanks to the large screen. I am an attorney, and it continues to amaze me how slowly the U.S. is moving to accommodate disability, and how snail-paced the societal shift in attitudes toward us has been. and it seems that whenever a company like Apple makes great strides in accommodating blindness off the shelf, plenty of other technologies come along and do not bother to incorporate us into their equation. So many educational apps, for example, are not accessible, though they could be, and given the push now to have iPads in classrooms, once again blind, visually impaired, and otherwise print-disabled students will be left out. Apple moves us two steps forward, and progress (for others) moves us three steps back. I should be able to turn on a television, flip a switch, or turn on a transmitter, and get descriptions. Yet, I have lost quite a lot of money as a published author -- as soon as my book was published, I sent a copy to bookshare.org; it was more important to me to have it available at the same time to the blind and print-disabled. The Authors Guild apparently does not care about such access, despite the fact that they would actually get money from us.) I would happily go to the movies more and happily purchase audio-described movies through iTunes if they were available. Even movies which are released with audio description are not always sold through movie resellers -- goodness knows I have tried. To date, I have only located The Incredible Hulk, from 2008, which I purchased for my son. Even Apple could do more. It could strengthen its requirements for apps. It has provided developers with the means to make their apps VoiceOver accessible, and there are plenty of apps out there which could be so. Only apps that are visual by their very nature should be exempted. But, as usual, profit trumps people, despite the fact that the disabled community rewards those who remember us with our business. Frankly, I would prefer to purchase the audio-described movies and shows I download from the vault, so that I could watch them with sighted friends and family. I wish I could show a film to a class and not have to ask my para or a student to tell me what is going on. The entertainment industry gets plenty of my money. Sorry if this is a little off topic. I thought I would tell you about a cool feature in the latest Airfoil, available from www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil. It is now possible to transmit audio from our iOS devices, simply by using the built in Airplay feature. This is why I am posting it here in the first place. Haven't got any actual audio output going, but I know it's transmitting as there is a stop control as well as a notice that noise will be overlaid in 10 minutes, where 10 is a number from 1 to 10. Keep you posted on this, but yes, how cool we can finally transmit our audio from our iOS device to our PC or mac just by using Airplay! Hello all. Any tips on using Vizwiz would be greatly appreciated please. Asking as I have tried the app for the first time to find out who a letter is from. The first answer I got was, hand touching camera. So tried again and the second anser I got was, not sure, bit blurred, move camera back. The third time I got an answer as if they couldn't see anything at all! Now, the first time I did the picture I held the phone slightly upwards from the item. The second time I placed the phone on top of the item. The third time I had the phone slightly left of the item. This is on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1. Re: Deleting album from iPhone
Ditto, I do this as soon as I hear the tri tone and worked every time so far. Christopher Hallsworth On 23/03/2012 04:01, Shen wrote: Hi everyone, I spoke to someone at Apple and was able to get clarification on the gesture. It's very strange that it works every time in Messages and Mail, but in Music, it seems to have some trouble. So first, find where the item is on the screen. Move your finger until you find it. Then do the double tap and hold on the second tap. The trick is that as quickly as you can, right at the end of the triple click sound, slide your finger to the right. So don't wait or anything, as soon as you hear the triple click tone, slide your finger to the right. When I did this, I got the delete confirmation more often than before. It's not perfect, but at least it's working more effectively for me now. Good luck. On Mar 16, 2012, at 6:19 AM, Paul Hunt wrote: Helo everyone. I struggled with this also. Here are the instructions for Prizmo that Esther posted a little while ago. Cheers, Anne One of the features that contributes to Prizmo's increased effectiveness for visually impaired users is the ability to take pictures with speech control, by saying, Take Picture, which reduces the likelihood of a blurred image due to moving the phone when you double or split tap a button to take a picture. You turn this feature on in the Settings menu by double tapping the Settings button in the top right corner of the main Prizmo screen. Flick right to the General Settings button under the Settings heading and double tap. On the General Settings screen, flick right past the Capture heading and set the Alignment Grid to Switch button, off, then set the Speech Control to Switch button, on. I believe both switches are turned on by default, but it is several months since I configured Prizmo. I'm not sure whether turning off the Alignment Grid is necessary, but you certainly don't need it to be displayed, since you can't see it while using the camera. Once you have checked that these settings are in place, double tap the Settings, back button in the top left corner to return to the Settings screen, then double tap the Done button in the top right corner to return to the main Prizmo screen. The main Prizmo screen has a list of types of documents to scan and OCR, followed by a Documents button at the bottom of the screen that are results you want to store in the app. In general, you will choose to double tap Text (the first listed entry). The app works in 3 stages, which are indicated by the 3 buttons at the bottom of the the next (Photo) screen: (1) Source (obtaining the image using the Camera -- can also use previous images from your photo album taken outside the app), (2) Image (options to apply corrections to image before OCR -- generally requires vision to perform actions, such as cropping to only include the part of the image that contains text or correct for distorted pictures because you didn't hold the iPhone flat), and (3) OCR (perform the OCR with an option to choose the language to improve the OCR), then display the results for editing, copying, etc. or saving in the app's stored Documents. You can navigate through the app without ever using these buttons, just by double tapping the Next button in the top right corner of the screen to move through each stage, and that's probably the easiest way to use the app when you get started, especially if you only work with documents in English. However, if you want to OCR a document in a different language, you can improve your results by double tapping the OCR button (third or three at the bottom right corner of the screen) and then flicking left to the language button (e.g., English) in the row of option buttons for that screen, and double tapping. You'll be able to double tap another language from the list of 10 available languages. (Note that you will not hear selected announced beside the currently selected language in the list, but you can only exit the Language menu by either double tapping a new language selection or by double tapping the Cancel button in the top right corner. Once you have changed the language (e.g., to French) and returned to the Photo screen with the OCR button set, you should hear the new language, French, announced if you flick left to that button.) Setting the OCR language before applying the next button improves the recognition of words with accented characters -- otherwise I may ge t a 6 for an e with acute accent, and other such examples. Here's the sequence for the iPhone 4, assuming that you have configured the Settings menu as outlined earlier. It is very helpful to use the $0.99 Light Detector app to check lighting conditions and also get a sense of the optimal centering and height of the iPhone above the page before you use Prizmo. (You can hear when the Light Detector signal is loudest if you move the phone up and down or left/right and forwards/back with respect to the page. This only gives a rough sense of where to position the phone when you use Prizmo, but if you can't hear any difference in signal with Light Detector when you move the phone around over the page, chances are that either the background light level is too low to take a good image, or you're blocking the light source with part of your body. You should also use a headset connected to the headphone jack, since as

VoiceOver and Braille support
I am quite impressed with how Braille works on an iOS device. According to a Skype conference I just had, you can not only read what's on the screen in grade 2 Braille; you can even type text in grade 2 Braille and it translates very well. This is on a Focus 40 Blue and an iPhone 4s. I think this might be a good combination since the Focus 40 Blue is the cheapest Braille display that I know of with 40 cells, bluetooth and USB connectivity and a perkins style keyboard. -- Christopher H -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. The basic solution was a Mini to VGA adapter and then connect a VGA to NTSC/PAL adapter. These two adapters were about $30 each so you're into $60-70 to fake a monitor. Without this the Mini seems to scan relentlessly to read the specs from the non-existent display causing the machine to bog down and give 'voiceover busy' messages when nothing much is going on. Re: Hi
Thanks, it's great to be here as well. I have an idea or two on what I am looking into. Either a Mac Mini or Macbook Pro if I want a DVD drive, or the Macbook Air if I plan to get the DVD drive separately. Oh yes, I would have to do this for the Mac Mini as well, but it's the cheapest mac, hence me including this in the research. Christopher H On 05/02/2012 10:41, Kawal Gucukoglu wrote: Hi Chris. Hi
Hi all. I have just joined this list. I think I was on a while ago with probably a different e-mail, but left due to other commitments. Those commitments have now passed and I'm willing to learn about the mac and I see other accessible products from Apple. I don't intend to look into a mac due to financial commitments, however this probably will happen in the future. So for now I will just learn and contribute if necessary. For those who don't know me I am 26 years old, blind with light perception, hearing impaired and have mild physical disabilities. My comments are it's wonderful that Apple are building accessibility into their products, including the mac. Well that's all for now folks. Take care. -- From Chris H in Derbyshire Please check out my blog at http://chrishallsworth.klangoblog.net. Many thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionar...@googlegroups.com.
