Re: Airport Time-capsule

2019-10-28 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Overall, it should be just fine for whatever people wish to do. Sure, you can
have 10 GB performance with newer, more modern routers, but the bottleneck is
your Internet connection. The fastest residential Internet connections, for
the most part, is 1 GB or less. The Airport Extreme and Airport Time Capsules
will support that speed just fine. Yes, the processor speed of the newer
routers is far superior, but, again, for most people's Internet and other web
activity, that just fine. The basic firewall in these Airport units will also
stop most attackers. Apple no longer makes these devices, but has continued to
release firmware updates throughout the last number of years to patch security
vulnerbiliies and to keep up with any problems. The wireless AC protocol is
supported on these devices and I've seen WiFi speeds of 1.3 Gb internally when
connected.

So, all this being said, no, it is not the latest and greatest. No, it does
not have the fastest processors, but in my opinion, for the vast majority of
users, it's still a viable and useful product that will give you quality speed
and security.

JMO.

Okay Simon. Still have the Airport Extreme and a 2 Tb Lacie drive attached for
Time Machine backups. Satisfied for no, unless a newer router from Brand X-Y-Z
is so good as to tempt me away.

Well if you have 10 Gb connectivity
Then that’s the one to go for.

LOL,
Don’t buy the most expensive
What you require will be in the middle of any device range,

Think carefully about what you have in your device list at home and what you
want to be able to do / have providing service to those devices.
The top of the line will be more than you require and most likely more than the
average household would be both provided from the ISP and more than the devices
currently available will handle.

Cool. I see several Netgear models ranging from $99 to $599. Speeds ranging
from 1.8 Gb to 10.2 Gb. Nothing more in our home than a smart TV and three
computers, two iPhones, and an iPad, plus a Wireless irrigation controller. So
far our AirPort Extreme seems to be handling the traffic just fine, so what
would be a good one to look for when the AE finally dies?

If you’re happy with what you have then there’s probably no reason to change.
My Rooter is 4 years old now and since I bought it my network has expanded at a
rapid rate to the point where you notice the Rooter struggling to manage and
process data from coming in all directions.

A very good reason in my case which I’ve already outlined.
The other reason is that the storage of the unit I have is a fraction of what I
need now.
Yes, I could extend by plugging in extra drives but that slows everything down
more again.
The New Mycloud drives from WD are cheap as chips now, cost me $199 for a 4TB
unit.
Whilst these drives aren’t Rooters they do far more and are exactly what the
Time Capsule should have been, a Time Capsule backup, a media streamer, a local
Cloud drive, completely programmable with SHHH etc.

Actually one could say those Time Capsules were made to withstand the test of

Re: Airport Time-capsule

2019-10-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Okay well firstly security, you want to get a Rooter that is of recent
production as it has firmware to stop hackers getting into your systems,
computers, backups or whatever else is on your network.
Modern-Day rooters can handle a larger amount of traffic than the Time Capsule,
AirPort Extreme, Express etc were ever designed to cope with.
Modern-Day Rooters use faster CUP chips and can handle more Wi-Fi standards,
LAN standards etc.

Okay Simon. Still have the Airport Extreme and a 2 Tb Lacie drive attached for

The airport devices don’t actually exist on the market any longer,

What you have is what you get and nothing more.

As for what is the best option now,
The list is long and can be costly.

I’m using an R7000 Netgear Nighthawk router
But that’s old now even after 3 years.

Hi Dave,

not so much a dinosaur,

apple stopped making their router and airport devices a few years ago now,
they haven’t replaced them with anything

as for the time machine device,
there is no reason why the storage / backup device wouldn’t work with your
devices now.
And around the house the airport express and streme should work fine as access
points but they aren’t what I’d use for connecting to the internet

The device used to be my main rooter however technology has passed it by and

My Time Capsule is a 1TB version which is now dwarfed by my WD Mycloud Network

Basic Airport Time Capsule and Time Machine questions

2014-12-06 Thread Phil Halton
I just got the 2 TB time capsule the other day and have setup my MBA's backup.
Can I also use the same Time Capsule to backup my iMac? I’m running the iMac
backup now, and it didn’t complain about another machine using the Time
Capsule, but I thought I’d ask if using two machines on the same Time Capsule
was a good idea.
Second question: does it matter how you arrange the Time Capsule? I have it
laying on its side with ports on the back side and the fan on the right side.
Is it supposed to be standing up? The fan looks like it might have four little
bumpers for standing on. Does it even matter how it is oriented?
thanks

laying on its side with ports on the back side and the fan on the right side.
Is it supposed to be standing up? The fan looks like it might have four little
bumpers for standing on. Does it even matter how it is oriented?
thanks

Re: Basic Airport Time Capsule and Time Machine questions

2014-12-06 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

As long as there’s enough space for both backups, that’s perfectly fine on a
Time Capsule. Regarding the placement of the TC, it is meant to stand
vertically in order to transmit the strongest signal thus best performance,
but, if you leave it that way, it likely won’t actually hurt anything.

Apple Airport Time Capsule

2013-12-30 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I wanted to see if people who have Apple Time Capsule think it is worth the
price. I am finally again looking at getting an external hard drive, and could
pick a 3 TB drive up for about $140, so the $299 for a 2TB Time Capsule makes
me curious what is the big advantage to it? Is it the wireless connection for
back up is so much faster than USB, but wouldn't it being wireless make it far
less secure? Just wanted to see the group's thoughts before I make my decision.
Thanks.

Re: Apple Airport Time Capsule

2013-12-30 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I think the advantage of the Time Capsule would be that it is wireless and
convenient, and is also a fast and powerful wifi router. One thing to keep in
mind, however, is you cannot use a Time Capsule for bootable duplicates/clones
of your disc. I think bootable duplicates are an important part of any backup
strategy, so you should get an ordinary external hard disc whether or not you
also get a Time Capsule.

Re: Apple Airport Time Capsule

2013-12-30 Thread Brian Fischler
Thanks Nick, I really appreciate your feedback. Guess I am going to go with the
less expensive USB or Fire Wire since that is what my iMac has drive. I got a
Seagate a year ago but sent it back as it wouldn't properly mount, and after
reading all the reviews for Seagate external drives, mounting on a MAc still
seems to be an issue with them, so looks like I will go LAcie or Passport as I
have heard good things about both of them.

Re: Apple Airport Time Capsule

2013-12-30 Thread Terje Strømberg
You are right, the other partition with Boot Camp was not accessible (toned
down). Do you mean that it is possible to configure Time Capsule to backup only
the Boot Camp partition to an attached external usb disc? In fact, i am pretty
sure that i saw both the Lacie and Boot Camp and McIntosh HD as possible target
disks, but to get Time Machine to understand this, time will tell.

I have external Lacie SSD and MyPassport spinning HD. Both works fine with
mac.

Take care

Re: Apple Airport Time Capsule

2013-12-30 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:
I received a 3TB TC for Christmas and love it! The router is fast, and time
machine does a good job backing up the Mac. I'd also buy a USB external drive
and use carbon copy cloner to make a bootable disk.
