Update Re: Audacity Tutorials

2018-09-22 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi all,

Well, it’s turning out that I’m probably not going to need Audacity at all,
because I made a huge discovery this morning. It turns out that VMWare has been
seeing my line-in jack all the time, it’s just that the label in my sound
settings was Microphone, and that was very misleading for me. I kind of do feel
very sheepish, but when I went into the properties for my input device inside
the VM, there was a checkbox that says “listen to this device”, and when I
checked it and tried to play something from my cassette recorder, voila, sound!
Luckily I was able to figure all this out before the end of my 30-day trial, so
now I will bite the bullet and purchase.

Thanks for all your suggestions, folks, I do appreciate them!

Re: Audacity Tutorials

2018-09-17 Thread Pete De Vasto
I did get to the Sounds and Audio Devices section, the only device listed was
HD Audio. I completely uninstalled the device, and was asked to restart
Windows. When I did that, HD Audio reinstalled automatically. To reiterate my
issue, sound comes up fine so I can use JAWS, Narrator, or whatever screen
reader I choose. However, the only Input device that shows up under properties
is a Microphone, even though my Mac mini has a line-in jack. I can’t for the
life of me figure out how I can get this VM to see that line-in jack. My
thanks, by the way, to the other person who suggested a couple of apps for me
to check out. I’m planning to do that soon if I can’t do my tape transfers
through Windows on the VM.

RE: Audacity Tutorials

2018-09-16 Thread Simon Fogarty
Can you get in to the device manager and have a look at the sound / audio
devices and see if any have ! or ? against them?

Then try deleting them and restart the vm to see if you can get a windows
default audio device to install.
Also if you have a USB audio device such as speakers or usb headphone adapter,
Plug that in and ensure that the USB device is seen in the vm tools as being
seen by the actual vm.
Then start up jaws or narrator and see what happens.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for your reply. To answer your questions:

Yes, I do have an audio device installed on the VM machine. It’s HDAudio. The
problem is that when I go to Sound Settings in Windows, the only input device I

one for digital audio. In the stand-alone VM, I only have speakers. What’s also
puzzling to me is that if I create a VM by importing my Bootcamp partition, it
says that everything is copied over, but that doesn’t seem to be the case if I
don’t have all the device choices. I would stay with running in the Bootcamp
environment, but it’s a pain to have to reboot out of Bootcamp any time I want

I hope this all makes sense.

Hi!
I gave up audacity long ago as they stopped the support of later versions with
VoiceOver.
I haven’t transfered any tapes to the computer so i am not sure what would
work.
But there are some other aplications out there for the mac.
I have Audio Hijack from Roughe Amoeba and Amadeus Pro from Hairsoft.
Both are really accessible with VoiceOver.
Amadeus Pro is quite straight forward so i suggest you take a look at that.
I am not sure if there’s a demo on hairsoft.com but i think i downloaded a demo
before i bought it.

RE: Audacity Tutorials

2018-09-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Pete,

I see you said the vm tools were installed from what you could see,

Have you checked to see that you have an audio device installed also in the vm?

I'll have to check my work machine to remember where this is but without an
audio device you wont hear anything.

Can you even get narrator working in the vm?
And do you have any issues with the windows machine when running in the
windows boot camp environment?

Hi,

I’m still struggling with trying to get windows under VMWare Fusion to see the
line-in jack on my late 2014 Mac mini. One person in the group suggested I
double-check that VMWare Tools was installed, and it is, but still no line-in
jack. It looks like the only sound device that comes with windows under VMWare
is HDAudio, and for some reason it’s not picking up the line-in jack. When I
installed Windows under Bootcamp, I had a Cirrus Logic CS4208 (AB 108) driver,
and the line-in jack showed up just fine. I’m trying to get hold of VMWare
support, but to me it looks like I have to have a purchased copy of Fusion
before they’ll talk to me. Everything else I need to do in Windows can be done
with a VMWare machine on my Mac, so I really would much prefer not to have to
reboot every time I want to do tape transfers.

So if I can’t use VMWare Windows, I’m looking at Audacity 2.1.1. I understand
this earlier version does work pretty well with VoiceOver. Has anyone used
Audacity to transfer recordings from an external tape recorder of any kind? If
not, have you used any other software on the Mac? Finally, if anyone has used
Audacity, are there any tutorials out there besides the documentation that
comes with it?

Thanks so much for any help,
Pete De Vasto

Audacity Tutorials

2018-09-13 Thread Pete De Vasto
