Re: How to Shuffle within Playlists [was Re: Creating a smart playlist in iTunes - I don't get it]
I agree, thats why I bring my questions here rather than trying to search for answers. Everyone here is so knowledgeable and actually uses it all. I just have to comment on Brahms and MandM haha, that is too funny. As I write this, I'm listening to all my track 4's, and I had Alice and Chains, and then Phantom of the Opera, and now Hooked on a Feeling...going from Think of Me to Hooka chaka hooka hookatee hee. Hi, The only thing I'd like to add to Esther's great post is that if you choose Shuffle Songs from the iPod's main menu or shake to shuffle, all songs on the iPod are shuffled, regardless of their playlist, unless you have set them not to be included when shuffling as Esther describes. Thanks very much. I think I learned more about iTunes from your email than I had known before and I've been using it daily for more than a year. How to Shuffle within Playlists [was Re: Creating a smart playlist in iTunes - I don't get it]
Hi Chris, Shuffle playback uses whatever group you're in at the time you turn it on as its basis for shuffling. So in iTunes on your Mac, if you select your Music playlist in the sources table, turn on the file browser (Command-B), select a genre or artist, and press the "Do Not Shuffle" button (which describes the current setting) to turn on shuffling (where this becomes the "Shuffle" button), then start playing music (either by pressing the "Play" button or by starting from any of the tracks in the resulting songs table and pressing enter), iTunes will shuffle through all the songs in the songs table, playing each exactly once. If you select a playlist, turn shuffle play on, and start playing from that playlist, then iTunes will only play tracks from that playlist (and will leave out any tracks where you have checked the box for "Skip when shuffling" on the Options pane if you edited the track with "Get Info" (Command-I)). If you want iTunes to continuously shuffle through the playlist, press the "No Repeat" button (which describes current setting) to turn on repeat play (this now becomes the "Repeat All Songs" button) and start playing. Chances are, you turned on shuffle play from your music playlist and never turned it off, which is why you're getting a mixture of Brahms and Eminem. On your Nano or iPhone, navigate to your playlist and then turn on the setting to shuffle songs before you start playing your playlist. Remember that these iPod/iPhone settings "stick". If you set your iPod or iPhone to shuffle songs, either from the Settings menu or while playing from a playlist, when you next go to play an Album you'll hear the tracks play in shuffled rather than sequential order. The shuffled setting (on the song level) applies to whatever group of music you're in, and only exempts tracks that were marked as "Do not shuffle" (such as Audiobook tracks, or any tracks where you checked this setting if you edited the Options tab in iTunes.) Ha! I sympathize, Chris! I have very ecclectic taste in music, so frequently have this experience when using Shuffle. If you find a way to keep it from happening, please do let me know. Re: Creating a smart playlist in iTunes - I don't get it
I use smart playlists for most of my music (over 7000 songs) and think they are tremendously interesting. First off, before you set rules, assuming you will have more than one, it is usually best if you switch the combo box that says "All" to "Any" as that will resolve a lot of contradictions. Once you have your list of rules in place, you just name it and off you go. For instance, I have one in which filters on Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Lou Reed and a few others whom I feel work together. With automatic updating, I was able to rip the latest Springsteen album and the playlist automatically contained the songs. My quejstion is how to keep "shuffle" from grabbing items outside the current playlist? This happens on my MacBook, iMac 24, Nano and iPhone whether I hit the button or shake the handheld devices. Thus, I jumped from a movement in Brahms Fourth to a song by Eminem an experience that nearly knocked me out of my chair. cdh On Aug 23, 2009, at 11:45 AM, rayna424 wrote: > > Hi everyone, > > I know I'm asking lots of iTunes/iPod questions, but I get the most > useful information from ya'll, so I've just given up searches. Re: Creating a smart playlist in iTunes - I don't get it
Nice, got my 4 playlist ;) I think my main issue with all this is not knowing what all the rules mean, what all the options mean, you know? Plus, I wasn't just making the rules, stopping interaction, and hitting enter. I thought I had to figure out all these things...so now I think I can play with it, yay!!! Re: Creating a smart playlist in iTunes - I don't get it
Hi Randi, You wrote: > > I thought it > would be fun to create a playlist with all number 4 tracks...just to > see what comes up, what gets combined. I don't necessarily want the > same genre or artist, ya know? So I still can't see how to do this. To make a smart playlist with all number 4 tracks, use Command-Option- N to create the smart playlist. Then use a rule: 4. Press (VO-Space) the first pop up button in the rules section and press "t r" quickly to change the setting from "Artist" to "Track Number". The next pop up button will be "is", which you can leave (or change to something else, like a range of values). Type in "4" in the text field, stop interacting, and press enter to commit your selections and be taken to the dialog window to name the playlist. One thing that might help is to quickly move between the songs table and playlist to check the results of changes you make in rules. Use VO-J to jump between playlist and songs table listing and back. If you have "Mouse cursor follows VoiceOver cursor" checked under your Navigation options in VoiceOver Utility (VO-F8), then you can Option- Click on the smart playlist to edit it (i.e., hold down the Option key and click the Trackpad on your laptop or mouse button -- there may be something else for NumPad Commander). Otherwise, use the context menu (VO-Shift-M) and choose "Edit smart playlist". Add or change a rule, commit by pressing enter, and jump back to your songs table with VO-J to see what changes were made. Re: Creating a smart playlist in iTunes - I don't get it
Hi ladies, Ok, this is helpful. But, my dad had seaid something about creating a playlist with all songs beginning with "T" or the like. I thought it would be fun to create a playlist with all number 4 tracks...just to see what comes up, what gets combined. I don't necessarily want the same genre or artist, ya know? So I still can't see how to do this. All these fields are just confusing...I think I need to play with it, but it never seems to like the rules I try to assign...Esther, your post is great, so detailed. Read through the Introduction to Smart Playlists post in the archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg01294.html for an explanation of how smart playlists work with some examples. "Interesting" depends on what you put in for criteria. If you want to make a smart playlist without reading anything, change the guidelines to a condition that will match anything in your library, like "size is greater than 0 MB" (VO-Space on the first pop up button, press "s i" quickly to select "Size", then press enter; VO-Right arrow to next pop up, VO-Space, arrow down to "is greater than", press enter; stop interacting with the rules section). Then, VO-Right arrow to the first check box and check it with VO-Space. That will give you a smart playlist of 25 items chosen at random. Or, you could change the random pop up button (VO-Space) and arrow down to some other criterion like "most frequently played" or "genre". Press enter to commit your selections. Re: Creating a smart playlist in iTunes - I don't get it
Hi Randi, When you open the Smart Playlist dialog, focus isn't on the first item. Press Shift-tab until you reach the Match the Following Rule check box. Be sure that it is checked, and press Tab once to a combo box where you choose the criterion you want to match, such as artist, release date, or song title. Then keep working your way through the dialog box, filling things in so that the playlist contains the content you want. Hi everyone, I know I'm asking lots of iTunes/iPod questions, but I get the most useful information from ya'll, so I've just given up searches. I don't understand this smart playlist thing.
