Re: A Question for Focus 40 Blue 5th Generation Braille Display Users

2023-12-04 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
The Focus 40 works very well on the Mac.
I have the one without braille keys.
Be aware though that there are glitches with braille functionality on the Mac.
At least for me.
I don’t like the menu button on the focus and the width of the display.
I would love to have the new Helptech activator.

A Question for Focus 40 Blue 5th Generation Braille Display Users

2023-12-03 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I tried searching the archives but cannot seem to locate any recent threads
on the following question:

A couple of days ago I purchased a new Focus 40 Blue 5th Gen braille Display
from Freedom Scientific. What a marvelous device. It works like a champ on
both the latest version of Windows (with the latest release of Fusion) as
well as my beloved Windows 7 PC which is running Jaws v15 (The Win7 PC is
not connected to the Internet).

I seem to recall that some iOS and/or Mac OS users reported that there was
some kind of unexpected glitch with the 5th gen braille displays when
connecting to iOS and / or Mac OS but I cannot remember what the glitch was
and in which OS it occurred and if the glitch had been resolved in a
subsequent version of the OS.

I am going to setup the display with my beloved 14 running the latest
version of iOS 16 but wanted to check here, first, to see if there are any
issues of which I should be aware, be fore I start the process.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

A Question About Using the BARD App for Reading a Braille Book with a Focus 40 Blue Braille Display

2016-03-18 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I recently downloaded a Braille title in the BARD app on my 6 Plus running
the latest version of iOS. I am using my Focus 40 Blue as the Braille
display. The firmware on my Focus is v4.59.

My questions are:

1.
Can I jump from page one to page 2 using only the display, itself? If so,
how?

2.
Is there any way to configure the system so I can use the left Whiz Wheel or
button in order to pan forward? I read Braille with my right index finger
and having to both transverse the display along with subsequently having to
press a navigation button with the same hand is causing quite a lot of
fatigue. In short, is it possible to reverse pan?

Any and all tips and tricks for reading Braille on the Focus 40 in the BARD
app would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

2016-03-18 Thread Michelle's Home Emails
Hi Mark,

I use the left or the right hand rocker switch to change pages on my IPhone and
some programmes on my mac Air.

I am not sure about the programme you are running. Have you gone into the help
menu of VO on your Mac, or if you are using IPhone space bar plus dots 1 and 3.

Sorry cannot help you further.

Re: Focus 40 blue key command issues

2015-08-14 Thread David Chittenden
Hi Scott,

My braille display is currently at my fiancé's house. I will check when I am
there next.

Many braille display commands are different depending on the braille display.
To find specific display commands, or assign specific commands to braille
display buttons or combination button presses go to VO utility with VO f8.
Interact with the selection table and select braille after a braille display is
connected. Stop interacting and vo right-arrow to select the displays tab.
Now, vo right-arrow to the commands table. There are a few lists. One list is
for braille display command buttons. Another list is VO and computer commands.
The braille display with the Mac is very customisable.

Re: Focus 40 blue key command issues

2015-08-12 Thread David Chittenden
Hello,

I do not have a Focus Blue. I use an Alva BC640 with Speech Pack with my Mac.
It was complicated getting the braille keyboard to pair, but the unit works
well with my Mac.

Re: Focus 40 Blue and Maverix

2014-06-17 Thread Jan Blüher, visorApps
Hi Scott,

you need the latest firmware for Bluetooth support of the Focus 40 on your Mac.

For the Focus 40 blue classic, the latest firmware is 4.59. For the newer Focus
40 blue (2012 and later) it is 4.93. You will need a Windows PC to do the
firmware upgrade.

Greetings

Hi.

I am sure there is no solution for upgrading on the mac.

It is one thing that I do not like with the focus 40. Another thing is that you
can not ajust firmness in the mac, you must connect to windows if you wants to
have it set to 100 %.

Thank you for providing the link.

Best regards Annie.

Thanks for this. Do you have a Mac installer version or can we just do this
using Windows? I do have Windows as well but thought I'd ask as I wish we
could download all braille drivers on all computers as now we can use your
products on different devices and not just windows.

Odd Problems with Focus 40 Blue in USB Mode; Firmware Update?

2013-07-06 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I'm increasingly having some problems when I charge my Focus 40 and use it with
my Mac in USB mode. It seems that now, I have to first load the Bluetooth
display, then switch to USB, otherwise, keystrokes aren't recognized.

This is a lot like the behavior I saw before Firmware Update 4.57 came out. Is
there now a firmware update from Freedom Scientific?

Thanks,
Teresa

Apparently, There is an Updated Firmware for Focus 40 Blue Braille Display

2012-10-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

A friend of mine just received his repaired Focus 40 Blue back from Freedom
Scientific.

He tells me that the firmware on his device is now 4.59. I'm running 4.57.

Does anyone know how to either update the firmware or from where to get the
update file?

I have searched and searched Freedom's site but can't locate anything.

I'm hoping there will be some improved functionality on either the Mac or
iOS.

Thank you,

Calling All Focus 40 Blue Jaws Users For Help, Off-List

2012-09-01 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

In addition to being a loyal Mac user, if you are a Focus 40 Blue Jaws v13.x
user, who occasionally creates documents in MS Word 2007, please contact me
off-list.

I have a Braille display spellchecking problem that I cannot seem to resolve
and I don't know of any other lists to which to send a request for help.

My direct email address is: mk...@ucla.edu

I will explain my problem should you contact me.

Thank you all in advance.

Focus 40 Blue Has Stopped Working Well in USB Mode

2012-05-24 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I just updated the firmware on my Focus 40 Blue to 4.57. It seems everything is
working much better, but with the most recent Lion update, some keys are not
mapped in USB mode, such as dot 3-chord for delete. I also cannot assign any
more keys in USB mode. anyone else notice this?

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: Focus 40 Blue Has Stopped Working Well in USB Mode

2012-05-24 Thread Daniel Montalvo
Yes I did. I was not able to assign any new keyboard command and that
frustrated me very much at the beginning. However, I managed to solve
that problem by deleting the device and reinstalling it again. That
worked in my imac but I am not sure if it will work for my new macbook
pro since I have just tested the focus in Bluetooth mode. In the imac
I was able to assign new keys that had no function the first time I
used the focus. However, I've got no idea about the dot 3 deleting
function.

Hope it helps.

I've attempted to do a google search and also search the FS website and the

had this problem for over a year, and I'm reasonably sure others have, too. I
think it would be great to post the instructions for firmware updating here, or
perhaps a pointer for getting them.

 Hello Listers,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing

I am delighted to inform you that I am now the proud owner of a
brand-spanking new Freedom Scientific Focus 40 Blue Braille display. I
 will
go pick it up from the post office sometime within the next 4 hours.

If memory serves, and many times it does not (smile), I recall reading
 here
that there are some nuances regarding the Focus-40 of which a new user
 should be aware.

So, I would greatly appreciate any advice on how I can get my new display
 up
and running so I can, once again, enjoy the privilege of exploring my
iPhone, Mac, and online world via a refreshable Braille display.

 Thank you all In Advance,

Calling All Focus 40 Blue Users

2012-03-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Listers,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
lists.

I am delighted to inform you that I am now the proud owner of a
brand-spanking new Freedom Scientific Focus 40 Blue Braille display. I will
go pick it up from the post office sometime within the next 4 hours.

If memory serves, and many times it does not (smile), I recall reading here
that there are some nuances regarding the Focus-40 of which a new user
should be aware.

So, I would greatly appreciate any advice on how I can get my new display up
and running so I can, once again, enjoy the privilege of exploring my
iPhone, Mac, and online world via a refreshable Braille display.

Thank you all In Advance,

Mark

Re: Calling All Focus 40 Blue Users

2012-03-29 Thread Teresa Cochran
The only problem I've had on the Mac specifically is that my display goes to
sleep for about ten minutes when I first plug it in via USB and does the same
when I restart VO in USB mode. I stumped three levels of Apple help folks with
this one, including someone purported to be an engineer, so I'm guessing
there's a good possibility of it being a bug. I'd suggest using the Bluetooth
and plugging the AC cord in.

Have fun. This display is really a joy to use. I use it with IBooks and text
files all the time.

interacting with items using the focus 40 blue

2011-10-14 Thread Priscilla Garces
Hey all,
I would like to know the comands for interacting with voice over on the focus
40 blue.
I got the display yesterday, it was great. i never immagined it interacting
with voice over like a breeze once i pluged in the USB.
Anyway. how do i interact with tables with the braille display without using my
computer keyboard?
Does anyone happen to take the braille display with them in addition to the
laptop? I'm planning to do that, the only problem, it doesn't fit inside my
current messenger bag without the need of a backpack.
it's pretty slim but is horizontally long. other than that the display makes
reading easier and especially that the braille is smoother like paper. it sure
was a bit more than what i thought i'd expect. I at most expected at least a 32
cell display, but i guess the focus 40 blue was the cheaper option verses the
braille note.

thank you.

Re: Teresa's Continuing Focus 40 Blue Saga

2010-12-01 Thread Teresa Cochran
Ok, I've just partially resolved one problem. The hardware is fine, according
to Windows and JAWS. Now it remains to be seen whether it's a problem with my
computer in particular, or the USB drivers not being installed for OS X. They
could either be corrupted in my case, or broken in this version of VO.

Where do I go from here? I'm not sure whether to contact someone at Apple or
not. I'm going to follow up with this reasonable contact at FS and see if he
knows from Macs, then go from there.

Any ideas?

 Hi Teresa,

I have the Braillino from Handytech and don't know if I can help. But after
having trouble hooking up the BrailleNote, I thought I'd offer my advice for
 what it's worth :).
Have you tried to add the play via USB? Also I wonder if when the display is
connected via USB if you would be able to see on the desktop. I'm not sure
if this is of any help, but I try. I hope you are having a wonderful day.

 Happily,

Problems getting my Focus 40 BLue working with VO

2010-08-14 Thread Kevin Fjelsted
I can successfully connect my FOcus 40 BLue via USB however I do not
get any mirroring. It happened once and then never again so the
problem is very duplicatable. I can enter Braille from the keyboard
and use the various buttons, wheels, and rocker bars on the Focus. Has
anyone experienced this problem? COnversely if anyone is successfully
using the FOcus what firmware version are you using?

Interesting Glitch with Focus 40 Blue

2010-06-24 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, folk,

In case anyone has an issue with this, I thought I'd tell you about my little
adventure.

After attempting many times to pair the Focus 40 Blue, I decided to try setting
up the device with the standard Bluetooth utility. Lo and behold, there were
signs of progress. I then used the Braille display utility to add the display,
and it worked? So in case you have trouble pairing this display, try this
method.

I wonder if that would work for my BrailleNote Mpower. I tried setting it up

Re: Resolved, WasRe: Focus 40 Blue Display Again

2010-06-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Alison,

Basically, it seems that only direct USB and Bluetooth displays are supported.
For example, my Braille Lite is not supported, even with a USB-to-serial
connector. (I even installed the drivers for the adapter, and it works with
ZTerm, so I can transfer my files).

Here's the Braille Note-like stuff that's supported:

*** Excerpt from VO online help:
Humanware
BrailleConnect 12 (Bluetooth)
BrailleConnect 24 (USB and Bluetooth)
BrailleConnect 32 (USB and Bluetooth)
BrailleConnect 40 (USB and Bluetooth)
BrailleNote Apex BT (USB and Bluetooth)
BrailleNote Apex QT (USB and Bluetooth)
Note: VoiceOver supports only the navigation keys on this display.
BrailleNote mPower BT 18 (Bluetooth)
BrailleNote mPower BT 32 (Bluetooth)
BrailleNote PK (Bluetooth)
Note: VoiceOver identifies this display as Humanware BrailleNote mPower BT 18.
***End excerpt
HTH,
Teresa
