Re: Keychain

2014-06-22 Thread Daniel McGee
I'm just wondering, how does this work between Mac and IOS devices alike?

I was thinking about using it but was worried about passwords being for lack of
a better term, "discoverable."
Guess I'm the paranoid type. lol
Seriously though, I'd like to give this feature of iCloud the benefit of a
doubt so if you could do your best to describe maybe how you use it and from
that, I can see if its going to be of any use to me. Finally, you mentioned the
data being "encrypted." I've heard of this term in the past but what does it
actually mean in simple english.

Thanks

Re: Keychain

2014-06-22 Thread Christopher Hallsworth
Lol I'm new to it as well so will pass on this for now. You are supposed
to be able to have names and passwords, credit cards and the like
automatically stored on your mac and/or iOS device as well as the cloud.
These are stored in what is called Keychain. When the data is encrypted
it means it's in a format that none other than the account holder can
retrieve the data. The rest will see nothing but garbage. The stronger
the encryption the more secure. Apple doesn't say what encryption they
use but it sure sounds like the maximum encryption possible. Hope this
helps.

Re: Keychain

2018-01-14 Thread Alex Hall
I use Keychain, but I use it to store passwords I come up with. It offers, but
I don't let it generate passwords for me. A few things about Keychain:

* It's not for documents, notes, or anything else. It stores secure
information, like credit card details or passwords, for auto-fill in websites
and apps. To store notes, you'd use the Notes app, optionally
password-protecting them.

* Keychain is only available for Apple products. The moment you want to
auto-fill your password from Keychain on Windows or Android, you're out of
luck. This isn't a problem if you live in Apple World as my family does, but
it's worth keeping in mind and could be a show-stopper for plenty of users.

* It can be a little complex to set up, using a different code to enable on
macOS and doing some other funny things. It's not bad, but it's not a simple
checkbox either.

* Oddly, it will auto-fill at your request. That is, you can use it with no
additional security. On iOS, for instance, you can let it fill in a card or
password, no Touch ID necessary. Of course, your device has to be unlocked, but
it's still worth remembering that anyone can log in or fill in cards if they
have your unlocked device. They can't see passwords, and auto-filled cards that
need a security code still make you enter the code.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

The only devices at this time to access Keychain would be Apple devices. I am
not so sure about storing the other things in notes. I will have to think about

RE: Keychain

2018-01-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Thomas,

The key chain in the mac / IOS platforms is really limited to the password and
related security features of the device,

 Certificates etc.

However with the new file app on the iPhone you may get the best of both worlds
with secure document management but I've not really looked in to it yet do use
the key chain on iphone and mac book air.

Just my contribution to the question. The app you're looking at may be
an excellent app. I've no knowledge of that.

Re: Keychain

2018-01-17 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Well, i should probably add that I've never called them myself. Myh
knowledge of them is based on reports from Microsoft staff participating
in the W3C Working Group I chair--that's the good authority to which I
refer.

I do not expect to call them. That's because I purchased an OEM license
of Windows 10. While, like so many, I didn't stop to read all the terms,
it's my understanding that OEM licenses do not include technical
support. Ergo, I don't expect to be calling them over any issue I may
encounter. That was my decision to save $48 on the license.

Hi, When you go to a website where keychain has your log in credentials saved,
you will see it ask you if you want to log into the website using the username
or email you provided then next to that you will get a button that says log in
with and it will say your username. double tap on that button and you will have
to authenticate with FaceID or Touch ID.

Re: Keychain

2020-03-04 Thread Brad Snyder
FYI - In macOS Catalina, iCloud preferences has been changed to Apple ID. Once
you find it, it is pretty much the same as when it was called iCloud in
previous macOS versions.

There is no iCloud preferences. Open System Preferences, Internet,
choose the account you want and in the table you will find Keychain
where you can enable it.

Re: Keychain

2020-03-04 Thread Lorie McCloud
I didn't go to internet accounts. I did go to iCloud. it's listed in system
prefs. where I seem to run into trouble is knowing when to interact and what to
interact with. if I don't do that right I don't find half of what's in there.

Re: Keychain

2020-03-04 Thread Barry Hadder
Well, glad you got it.
When ever the vo cursor moves over something that can be interacted with, there
is a sound effect and if it is a group of items it will also say group. It
makes vo navigation much faster, but it is something to get used to.

in the vo help menu, there is a list of most if not all of the vo navigation
sounds. You can just arrow through them. i am assuming that you can hear. If
not then of course that won’t be of much help.

RE: Keychain

2020-03-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Lorie,

You ask a simple question but, I’m afraid, the answer is not so simple.

Let me start by saying that I think the Apple Key Chain, as a password manager,
is an excellent alternative to some third-party password managers.

It's safe, easy to use, consistent across all of your Apple devices, and free,
as it were.

In short, there are two general methods for using Apple Key Chain, as a
password manager. The first method, which is what I suspect you wish to learn
how to use, is to have the Key Chain automatically enter your login credentials
when prompted by an app or a website.

The second method is to open the Key Chain password manager and lookup the
login credentials, manually.

I suggest that you read the Apple user manuals and search for relative topics
via Google as, in my opinion, there are just too many variables and nuances of
Key Chain, as a password manager, to cover in one succinct reply.

However, I will list the following points that you should keep in mind when
exploring the Apple Key Chain as a password manager.

Please keep in mind that I am referring to the automatic entry feature of the
Apple Key Chain, as a password manager, only:

1.
Generally speaking, the Apple Key Chain, as a password manager, works best when
logging into websites via Safari.

2.
Many websites will not function-as-expected with the Apple Key Chain, as a
password manager.

3.
While some third-party apps, such as those developed by Google, will work with
the Apple Key Chain, as an automatic-entry password manager, many more will not
function as expected.

4.
In some situations, when you want to use the Key Chain password manager feature
with an app, such as BARD Mobile for iOS, you will need to first login to the
service, via Safari, then when prompted, save the password. Afterwards, when
you are prompted to enter the username and/or password from within the app, you
can launch the Key Chain manager and have it enter your credentials,
automatically.

Possible Scenario in which you want to have your login credentials
automatically entered into a third-party app that does not support the Apple
Key Chain password manager, in iOS:

Assuming that you have the Apple Key Chain enabled as described in the Apple
user manuals:

1.
Open Mark's Wonderful App, on your Apple device. You are prompted for your
login credentials.

2.
Enter your credentials and select the continue / OK button. You are logged
into the app without being prompted to save your credentials in the Apple Key
Chain.

3.
Logout of Mark's Wonderful App.

4.
Open Safari and go to www.MarksWonderfulAppsOnlineWebsite.

5.
Login to your account using your credentials. Hopefully, you are prompted to
save your login credentials to the Apple Key Chain.

6.
Save your credentials to the Key Chain.

7.
Logout of your account and close Safari.

8.
Open Mark's Wonderful App, on your Apple device. You are prompted for your
login credentials.

9.
Activate an edit field, for example, the username or email edit field. The
onscreen keyboard will appear.

10.
In the suggestion area of the onscreen keyboard, either select the correct
option, if listed or, select the "passwords" button. Doing this will cause
your device to prompt you to authenticate your request.

11.
After successful authentication, you will see a list of all of your saved
accounts and credentials.

12.
Select the correct option and the credentials will be automatically entered
into the login text edit fields of Mark's Wonderful App.

13.
Select the continue / OK button.

14.
Put a big smile on your face.

Good Luck,

Mark

Re: Keychain

2020-03-28 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

When in Safari, double-tap either the username entry field, or the password
entry field. This will activate your cursor and bring up the on-screen
keyboard. This next part isn't consistent, as sometimes it takes more swipes
than others, but, if you have a keychain entry for this item, there will either
be a suggestion or a "Password" button as you swipe right from the entry fields.

So, for example, if you were on www.fitbit.com, and you double-tapped in the
username field, then swiped right listening to the various elements announced
by VO, you might get an item announced such as "Use Lori with such and such
eMail address for fitbit.com?". If that is the one you wish to use, then
double-tap it. If it is not, or if the keychain is having difficulties
figuring out which entry to use, there will also be a Password button that you
can use that will open up all entries in your keychain. Your fingerprint or
FaceID will be required in both cases to access the keychain entries. Also,
the actual passwords are not displayed, just the site and username
possibilities. If you do not get a specific suggestion, then simply swipe
through the choices until you find the one you wish to use. Double-tap on it
and its credentials will be entered for you. You will usually still need to
double-tap the Sign-In or LogIn buttons to proceed, but this is also a little
inconsistent. I'm not sure if the inconsistencies are due to Apple or due to
the inconsistent nature of web-page coding.

HTH.

I like my keychain to be simple. If Mark’s wonderful keychain can keep my
passwords safe especially if I rely on the keychain to remember my passwords
for the websites I visit, then I am a happy person as I can’t remember
generated passwords so I keep my passwords simple but strong for me to
remember. So Mark, how much is your wonderful keychain?

Yes. In order to use iCloud Keychain on your iOS device, you must have a
passcode enabled. Once you have a passcode, you may use either TouchID or
FaceID, but this is optional.
Keychain will not work without security enabled.

Hi,

Creating a six digit pass-code is accomplished in Settings, Face-ID &
Pass-Code. Beyond that, just try to enable it and it will prompt you for any

Hi,

By default, the keychain password is the same password that you use to unlock
your Mac.

Re: Keychain issues

2017-06-20 Thread John Panarese
Also, Safari login info can usually be found in Safari preferences. If you
open Safari, choose preferences and then passwords. You should see a list of
all of your logins and the passwords. You might have to authenticate with your
account password to see the actual passwords.

In other words, you don't need to use Keychain Access to see Safari
passwords, but as Dr. Carter indicated, the keychain password should be the
same as your account password unless you reset your account password.

Re: Keychain Question

2019-02-12 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Key chain is a hard beast to know what will and won’t work. I was having issues
on one of my computers and had to start from scratch with the keychain. I would
suggest creating a new keychain on the older system and then copying over the
passwords you don’t want to lose to the new keychain. When you do this you will
be prompted for the keychain password in that prompt there is a check box
saying allow this for the rest of this operation or something like that. If you
don’t click this check box, then every password that you copy will prompt you
for the keychain password.

I did have issues starting sometime in Winter of last year where overtime my
Mac went to sleep I had to re-enter my Mail passwords before I could get any
new mail.

Re: Keychain on the Mac

2014-10-16 Thread Deb Lewis
Well fortunately I did actually manage to get this figured out without zapping
anything.
I hadn’t seen the advanced button under keychain on the phone. Here indeed you
can change the code and the phone number.
Then my next misery was that for some reason my phone wasn’t receiving any
calls or texts after I’d enabled handoff on the mac. Fortunately a reboot of
the phone got that one solved.
And then the mac started showing that option again to have a device verify the
keychain which is really what i wanted in the first place. So now the Mac is
added.
what a chore, but at least it’s done and the process is straightforward enough
if the Apple servers weren’t bogged down and the phone hadn’t been conked by
adding the Mac to it.

I suppose you just use System Settings, find the setting in question,

Re: Keychain on my I Mac.

2015-10-04 Thread Alex Hall
When you enable Keychain in iCloud, you'll be asked for the code. If you don't
enter one, you should get a reminder later that "this Mac is waiting for a code
to activate iCloud Keychain". If not, or if you missed it, just go back to
iCloud Preferences and enable Keychain again, though that may generate a
request for a new code. Either way, there should be a dialog with a text field
where the code is entered. Well, it's more of four text fields through which
the Mac auto-advances as you type each number, but it comes to the same thing.
