Re: Zoom Meetings

2020-06-11 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I also generally get away with letting my screen reader chatter on my
Bose Q700. It's testimony to it's noise cancellation which phones have
to try and improve voice pickup and minimize environmental sounds for
any user. If there are lots of mics on the headset, the noise
cancellation can be quite excellent.

However, it doesn't always work. Some people have better hearing and
will hear that screen reader, or hear your typing as you click keys.
Some of these people won't care, but others can be very bothered by such
stuff.

Moral of the story: I prefer a headset that has mute/unmute right on the
headset in a form that confirms whether or not I'm muted. This can be
very important should you choose to go for a walk down the hall while
listening to your teleconference on your BT headset. Remember about that
Supreme Court hearing the other month in the U.S. where somebody forgot
about that part? It made national "hah hah good joke" news for a couple
days in the U.S. last month.

Best,

Janina

I wonder if it does depend on version the last time I used Xoom on my Mac with
AirPods people could still here the speech - if I muted my audio when not
speaking that stopped the problem I have recently updated zoom again and
haven’t asked people about VO but will do in my next zoom meeting

No matter what platform you use, you should always use headphones or a headset.
Forcing others on the call to hear your screen reader is just inconsiderate.

Hi,

An update and clarification with respect to others hearing VoiceOver when in a
Zoom session. If you’re on a Mac, without headphones, then others will hear
your VoiceOver navigation. When using iOS/iPadOS, this is not the case, as
VoiceOver sound is not passed through the mic to Zoom and onto other
participants. This appears to be similar to how FaceTime on the Mac is able to
ignore VO audio and does not pass this through to others on a FaceTime call.
Therefore, as a matter of politeness and respect, I would concur with Brad in
recommending that you always use headphones when in a Zoom session on your Mac.
It does not appear to be necessary on iOS/iPadOS.

Re: Zoom Meetings

2020-06-10 Thread Brad Snyder
To rebut your clarification, when using Zoom on an iOS device, it has been my
experience that participants can hear VoiceOver loud and clear when someone is
not using headphones or a headset during a Zoom meeting .

Still working on it though, so I’ll update if I have an epiphany.

Re: Zoom Meetings

2020-06-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi ET,

In my latest testing, even on iOS/iPadOS, the muting does not stop VO from
announcing the chat messages. I’m playing with VO settings, System settings
and Zoom settings, and haven’t found any useful solution yet, other than
turning off VO to turn them off. that’a little drastic, but does the trick if
you’re not participating in the chat or any other part that requires VO.

Still working on it though, so I’ll update if I have an epiphany.

Re: Zoom Meetings

2020-06-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

As already mentioned, it depends on whether you’re hosting or simply
participating in a Zoom session as to whether the Mac or iOS/iPadOS version
suits your needs as there are more features available on the Mac version. One
major concern from a VO user prospective is the announcing of chat messages.
This is mutable on iOS/iPadOS whereas I’ve been unable to mute this on the Mac.
I have made my Zoom rep aware of this as well as submitted Zoom feedback
regarding this. Hopefully, they implement something in an update soon. I,
like many others, use headphones as it keeps things less noisy in my house for
the rest of the clan, and others don’t need to hear my VO chattering away.
There are, of course, situations where we’re playing family games via Zoom or
other meeting platforms when I don’t use headphones, but do in most all
professional sessions.

Agree with Simon. The Zoom interface is less cluttered on an iPhone than on a

2020-06-10 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
But on the Mac with voice over on and you are in a meeting the speech doesn’t
stop yapping. The only way I can get it to stop is to put Voice over in the
chat panel menu. Last night I was in a meeting and I tried sending messages to
everyone, but the message kept going to individuals in the meeting. The focus
was dreadful. So in case that person is on the list, I apologise for you
getting messages. I think it was someone called Tom.

Hi,

It depends on how you define better. The Mac app has more features and whether
or not you need or want those features depends on what you are doing with Zoom.
Both the iOS and Mac apps are fully accessible with VoiceOver.

Well now that there was quite a bit of discussion about Zoom that I did not
follow, I may be trying it soon.

Some basic questions. I will use Zoom either on the Mac or the iPhone. Has
anyone found one better than the other? Any tips on using Zoom? Thanks much.

2020-06-09 Thread Brad Snyder
I use a headset with my Mac mini. A webcam is really not necessary.
