2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Anders,
The starter kit, with room stat and bridge, costs about £200. Radiator valves
cost about £60 each but you don't need those straight away.
Unfortunately I don't know about heat pump compatibility especially not outside
the UK. However, as far as the electronics are concerned it can function in the
same way as an old fashioned dial stat – just a glorified on/off switch really.
If your heat pump can take a dial stat it can probably take Tado.

Hi,
For smart heating I use a system from a company called Tado. I purchased it
because of its Homekit integration but actually, I find I very rarely have to
use the Homekit side of the operation because it all just works.
The basic setup is a smart thermostat. However, you can also add smart radiator
valves to individual rooms. The system geolocates via the Tado app and reduces
the set point of the thermostat gradually as you move further and further away
from home. Critically, it also raises the temperature gradually as you return,
so if your house is particularly cold and you're far away, the heating will
switch on long before you arrive home.
Multiple users are supported and geolocation is based on the user closest to
the house.
The system also has integration with weather forecast data and builds a model
of how quickly the house warms up and cools down so that, for example, instead
of setting the heating to come on at 7:00 AM, you set the house to be warm by
7:00 AM. On a cold day this may trigger the heating to start up at 6:00 AM, but
on a warmer day it might not come on until 6:45 AM.
Setup is an absolute doddle as all devices have a QR code on them, which you
just scan into the app and let it do its thing. Only snag is that I'm not sure
how compatible it is with US heating. If you can get it, though, I couldn't
recommend it highly enough.

Thanks, Jeff. Just curious, do you control the thermostat through any of these
interfaces? We currently have a nest, but I'm thinking I'd like to have a
thermostat I can control through Siri. Currently looking at the Ecobee3.

Apparently, sound monitoring doesn’t currently work with Homekit, but you can

Well, then we're two of a kind. I also prefer controlling the nest myself. I

BTW, got the shortcut/Google Assistant setup working. Thanks again for

Assistant. I kind of like it - you know controlling a Google product with an

RE: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-27 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi John,
You're right, a lot of those features are becoming more common now, but I
haven't found another system that has all of them all in one place, especially
the smart TRVs.
The real gem is that the TRVs can talk to each other and the main thermostat.
So say your heating is set to 20°C and every room in your house is at 20°C or
above, except your living room which is at 18°C. The TRV in the living room
will detect that the living room is too cold and send a command to override the
main thermostat and switch it on so that the living room can get some heat. At
the same time, it will also send a command to all the other TRVs to close up,
so only the living room radiator actually gets warm. Works like a charm and
makes my house feel so much more comfortable! Once the living room is up to
temperature it will cancel the thermostat override, so the heating will switch
off again.
As for saving more by using manual mode, I'm of the opinion that that's a false
economy in so many ways, but this is the good thing about having personal
choice.

I believe those features are pretty common now. The Nast has always done all of
that. No I never use the automatic modes. I prefer controlling that as I need
it. I get more savings that way. I guess I’m just a cheapskate, and a control
freak. 😸

Hi,
For smart heating I use a system from a company called Tado. I purchased it
because of its Homekit integration but actually, I find I very rarely have to
use the Homekit side of the operation because it all just works.
The basic setup is a smart thermostat. However, you can also add smart radiator
valves to individual rooms. The system geolocates via the Tado app and reduces
the set point of the thermostat gradually as you move further and further away

so if your house is particularly cold and you're far away, the heating will
switch on long before you arrive home.

happens, or I should say, I'm prompted to watch Youtube videos about connecting
to a nest thermostat. Our nest is about six years old, it's a 3rd gen I
think,. Do you know if we need a newer unit for this to work? If so, I'll
probably just get the Eco, since it works with Siri.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-26 Thread Jeff Berwick
No, not at all.

I thought it might be hard to install, when I looked in the box, but it was
actually really simple. I had the help of my 14 year old and we installed it
ourselves. Basically, you take the thumb knob off the inside of the door and
then attached the August lock. The app walks you through the setup process.

There is a bridge that you plug into a nearby outlet and there is another small
device that you just stick near the latch of the door—this helps to identify
whether the door is open or closed.

I had some connection issues at first and their support staff were good over
the telephone.

 Hi Donna,

All of the products I use work with Homekit They also work with Google
Home. I have both systems in my house, so I wanted cross compatibility.

The iHome ISS50 is a 5 in 1 sensor. It can report back on things such as:

 temperature,
 humidity,
 motion,
 sound and,
 light.

Apparently, sound monitoring doesn’t currently work with Homekit, but you
can monitor through the iHome Control app.

I use the iHome Control app, Philips Hue and Home for my needs and find
 all of them accessible.

Re: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-26 Thread John JD Denning
It is cool that we can do that. But I see it only as a workaround. I don’t
really care to use the Google assistant. Though creating the Siri shortcut it’s
seamless from my end.

I did add all my devices to the Google assistant since they all work with just
about every platform out there. But I prefer using Siri. So the nest is the
only thing that I have to do this way. And it does work well.
It’s rather easy to set up. First you have to set up your Google assistant app
on your iPhone. Then use it to do various functions with your nest. After you
do them once then they will be in your Siri shortcuts suggestions. So then all
you do who is at a phrase and you’re done.

So for example are use the Google assistant to set my nest thermostat to 70°.
Then I went to settings for Siri and under the suggested shortcuts was set the
thermostat to 70°. So I added the key phrase, and now all I have to do is tell
Siri to set my thermostat to 70°. It launch is the assistant app and tells it
to do it. So it can only be done from the phone since it needs to launch the
Google assistant app.

I do not believe it has NFC, but it does work with both Google Home and Home
Kit and can unlock your door on approach. You can also allow other people
access to the lock if need be and I purchased a keypad to go with it which can
be placed outside. In this scenario, you can give people a four digit code for
them to enter your house.

The smartlock you’re using, does it has nfc or is it only remote controlled?
I would like to have something that would unlock when you put your device

Oh, wow, that's super cool! How did you do it? I've never used Google
Assistant IOS app. Do you use it for anything besides controlling the nest?
Cheers,
Donna

I've heard that furnace installers/repair people prefer the Eco, and I will say
I don't think our nest has worked quite as well with the new furnace that was
put in last summer. The Honeywell thermostat that Jeff mentioned also gets
good reviews. But yeah, I'm tired of controlling it through a separate app -
I'd really like to just run everything through home kit.
Cheers,

Like you, I have a nest thermostat. I’ve had it for years. If Nast added
HomeKit support I would stick with Nest and probably upgrade. But I’m
considering the ecobee as well. I really would like control via HomeKit and
Siri. Everything else I have is controllable via Siri.

I have several automations, like went to turn on outdoor lights went to turn
them off if somebody approaches the house at night to turn on certain lights.
And then of course he seen that shut everything down. And all controllable by
Siri, or the Home app on my phone. And everything was easy to set up.

Re: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-25 Thread John JD Denning
I am using LIFX bulbs, eve switches, and eve motion detector.

The only accessibility problem I have is adjusting colors on the bulbs. It’s a
very graphic interface. And not even usable with voiceover on. Everything else
is no problem at all.

Re: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-25 Thread Jeff Berwick
Hi Donna,

All of the products I use work with Homekit They also work with Google Home.
I have both systems in my house, so I wanted cross compatibility.

The iHome ISS50 is a 5 in 1 sensor. It can report back on things such as:

temperature,
humidity,
motion,
sound and,
light.

Apparently, sound monitoring doesn’t currently work with Homekit, but you can
monitor through the iHome Control app.

More information at:

https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/ihome-ihome-iss50-5-in-1-smart-home-monitor-iss50wc/10488097.aspx

I use the iHome Control app, Philips Hue and Home for my needs and find all of
them accessible.

Jeff
