Subject: Re: antivirus for mac, is it useful?

these days, common sense isn't enough. There are sites being infected with
multi-platform malicious code that can infect your machine on a browse by
session. Some flash on some sites can also infect your mac. We are no longer
the odd man out when it comes to malicious software of any kind (windows has
been losing the desktop/laptop market share for a long while now).

Most site operators either don't know or don't realize that their sites are
so vulnerable to attack (and very few even have the knowledge to secure
their sites). SO , as a result, infections among users of apple products has
been on the rise.

One of the best ways to prevent infections is to make sure you have
adequate protection. This includes: a anti-virus package, a firewall and
backups of your system (just in case).

SO far, the 2 best top a/v packages are: virus barrier and clamsav. Both are
accessible for the blind and both can be setup and configured for a variety
of tasks. There are several others, but their accessibility across platforms
for the blind is very limited.

Anyway, thats my take on the issue.

any A/V program set to scan on open will slow a machine down. you can set it up
to scan on a schedule or only look at specific filetypes. I use clamsav on a
once per week schedule here. most default settings are good enough for the
casual user and shouldn't present too many problems.

Re: antivirus for mac, is it useful?

2013-12-27 Thread eric oyen
It doesn't require it as much as windows, however, I would strongly recommend
its use. clamsav is a good free version and is also quite accessible. Believe
me, with the ever increasing popularity of apple products, its eventually going
to be very hard not to incur the wrath of those who create malware. In this
case, having an antivirus client for OS X is definitely a proactive solution.

Re: antivirus for mac, is it useful?

2013-12-26 Thread Littlefield, Tyler
Common sense only goes so far. A lot of people brag about how it has no
viruses, but there are viruses out there for OSX and the market is
getting larger. This means that the returns of writing a virus for OSX
are much higher.

Common sense is useful, but in today's world it's not everything. If
someone gets infected and the virus spawns through email/etc, it's
already been easy enough to infect people through graphics with exploits
on the format, etc etc.

Re: antivirus for mac, is it useful?

2013-12-26 Thread eric oyen
these days, common sense isn't enough. There are sites being infected with
multi-platform malicious code that can infect your machine on a browse by
session. Some flash on some sites can also infect your mac. We are no longer
the odd man out when it comes to malicious software of any kind (windows has
been losing the desktop/laptop market share for a long while now).

Most site operators either don't know or don't realize that their sites are so
vulnerable to attack (and very few even have the knowledge to secure their
sites). SO , as a result, infections among users of apple products has been on
the rise.

One of the best ways to prevent infections is to make sure you have adequate
protection. This includes: a anti-virus package, a firewall and backups of your
system (just in case).

SO far, the 2 best top a/v packages are: virus barrier and clamsav. Both are
accessible for the blind and both can be setup and configured for a variety of
tasks. There are several others, but their accessibility across platforms for
the blind is very limited.

Anyway, thats my take on the issue.

Hey Lew,

I thought the Sophos site offered some interesting info and glad they still
support the software. I would be curious what if any differences there are and
if one may be more effective over the other. I will also ask around and see if
I can get some questions answered and will share what I learn.
I'm always interested in keeping up with what is going on in the world of
viruses etc. Perhaps not a significant issue for a Mac today, but one can never
be to ready. :)
Besides we should be considerate of our windows friends. :)

 Hello Everyone

Is there antivirus software out there that works with Voiceover? I
recently became part of a large home network and I don’t want my mac to be
in the “passdown chain”. Any help appreciated.

 Kindly

for mac. it's constantly updated and very stable. voiceover friendly from my
experience in OS 10.6. if you get lost, let me know and I'll find the link for
it for you.

Re: Antivirus for mac

2012-03-09 Thread Eric Oyen
sophos is partially accessible. the only problem is getting to the system icon
(it is invisible to voiceover and further left of apple scripts).

virus-barrier is a $29 package available at the apple app store. this one is
accessible in all but the scan progress window (according to others). I have
used sophos before and it works to protect both mac and windows machines (can
scan for windows malware saved to a mac or viewed by a mac). generally, it is
good software.

I have no experience with virus-barrier. there are others on this list (and
elsewhere) that do use it.

Hi Lew,

Just curious if you have used the ClamAV product and how you feel this compares
to the Sophos product.

THanks,
