Microsoft just updated the office 2015 preview and it now seems to work with
VoiceOver quite a bit better. I had a brief play with Word and the document
is now readable, and formatting information - spelling errors, font, etc are
exposed properly and can be seen. It also announces it automatically when it
changes, so you know when you’re moving into a heading or whatever. Links
and tables also seem to work and you can select across pages, unlike with
iWork I also briefly looked at Excel and VO now recognizes the grid, so
things seem to be better there as well.

Re: Office 16.9 accessbility improvements

2015-04-15 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

You are! You gotta do like George said.

I'm uploading the preview to my public Dropbox for you guys now to make it
easier. This way you guys have a direct download link to the .pkg file.
But, meanwhile, here is what you need to do.

Open up Word.

Get yourself into a document, be it a blank document, or whatever.

Go to your menu bar with VO+M.

VO+Right arrow over to the help menu and open it up with vo+down arrow.

Vo+down arrow until you get to Check for updates, then hit VO+Space.

Hit VO+Space on the check for updates default button.

Now, you'll get a table. By default, you'll probably see an update to
Microsoft Updater in this table. You'll also see it's checked to be
installed and that its size is just over a meg.

Go ahead and navigate with Voiceover to where you need to be in order to
install that update. I won't talk you through that, as the screens here are
100% accessible.
If it asks you to close updater before installing, or to choose install
later, go ahead and hit vo+space on the option to close and install.

Once it's installed go back to that same window you were at after going into
the help menu and to check for updates. It should still be up, but you
might have to possibly command+tab to find it. Once you've done this,
again, hit the check for updates default button.

Now, in the table, you should see Microsoft Word Preview 15.9. Now mind
you, I don't know if you have to update to this in order to then get up to
the accessible 16.9, or if the original poster made an error in that version
number. I've not quite yet gotten that far. I'm in the process of doing
this with you right now as I type this, so I'll let you know if there are
further steps, once I know. Anyway, this Word Preview 15.9 installer should
say it's about 700MB in size, give or take a little bit here or there.
Again, it already should be checked. Just navigate as usual, let it
download, then once it's done, go through the installer like normal. Then,
close Word, if it doesn't make you do so already, and once this 15.9 update
has been installed, relaunch Word, then try it out. If it still doesn't
work, then perform these steps to check for updates again until it says
there are no updates available. If then it doesn't still work, then I will
need to research things further.

Chris.

Anyway, again though, that's not for this list.

Maybe Microsoft hasn’t updated their main downloads. If that’s the case, you
can update inside any of the office apps which is how I got it in the first
place. Open Word, Excel or any other office app, then go to the help menu
and check for updates. The update tool may have to update itself first, but
after that you should see updates for all of the office apps. Now, if
Windows update worked as well…

Microsoft just updated the office 2015 preview and it now seems to work
with
VoiceOver quite a bit better. I had a brief play with Word and the
document
is now readable, and formatting information - spelling errors, font, etc
are
exposed properly and can be seen. It also announces it automatically when
it

changes, so you know when you’re moving into a heading or whatever. Links
and tables also seem to work and you can select across pages, unlike with
iWork I also briefly looked at Excel and VO now recognizes the grid, so
things seem to be better there as well.

Absolutely! It may be a few hours, but I'm getting the file uploaded.
Please just be patient with me. I discovered that I don't have transmit
installed, bleh, so need to get that done too. Therefore I don't have a way
right now to upload via ftp. I guess I could use the terminal and do it,
but really? I'd so! rather not. LOL! I'm geeky enough to do so, I just
don't prefer it, therefore, uploading to my server isn't gonna be possible,
but! that said, I am getting it up on my Dropbox as a public share link.

Just hang tight with me. I'll get it to all you guys who haven't gotten it
already. It won't be the new update discussed here. You'll have to run the
software updater, but, alas, you'll get it once you do so.

I won't talk you through that, as the screens here
are 100% accessible.
If it asks you to close updater before installing, or to choose install
later, go ahead and hit vo+space on the option to close and install.

Once it's installed go back to that same window you were at after going
into the help menu and to check for updates. It should still be up, but
you might have to possibly command+tab to find it. Once you've done this,
again, hit the check for updates default button.

Now, in the table, you should see Microsoft Word Preview 15.9. Now mind
you, I don't know if you have to update to this in order to then get up to
the accessible 16.9, or if the original poster made an error in that
version number. I've not quite yet gotten that far. I'm in the process
of doing this with you right now as I type this, so I'll let you know if
there are further steps, once I know. Anyway, this Word Preview 15.9
installer should say it's about 700MB in size, give or take a little bit
here or there. Again, it already should be checked. Just navigate as
usual, let it download, then once it's done, go through the installer like
normal. Then, close Word, if it doesn't make you do so already, and once
this 15.9 update has been installed, relaunch Word, then try it out. If
it still doesn't work, then perform these steps to check for updates again
until it says there are no updates available. If then it doesn't still
work, then I will need to research things further.

Microsoft just updated the office 2015 preview and it now seems to work
 with
VoiceOver quite a bit better. I had a brief play with Word and the document
is now readable, and formatting information - spelling errors, font, etc
 are
exposed properly and can be seen. It also announces it automatically when
 it
changes, so you know when you’re moving into a heading or whatever. Links
and tables also seem to work and you can select across pages, unlike with
iWork I also briefly looked at Excel and VO now recognizes the grid, so
things seem to be better there as well.

Re: Office 16.9 accessbility improvements

2015-04-15 Thread Eileen
HELLO,

I hope what I am going to post is not off topic. I am having problems
completing the installation of Office 16 upgrade. I have gotten as far as
downloading the upgrade, but then I seem to get into a loop where I get the
busy, busy busy!!! thing. This occurs for several minutes, so the only option
left is to force quit the installation. I am wondering if someone who has gone
through the installation process and is running the update can give me some
ideas on how to trouble shoot thisthis, so I can complete the process. Thanks
in Advance.

Best,
Eileen

Microsoft just updated the office 2015 preview and it now seems to work
 with
VoiceOver quite a bit better. I had a brief play with Word and the
 document
is now readable, and formatting information - spelling errors, font, etc
 are
exposed properly and can be seen. It also announces it automatically when
 it
changes, so you know when you’re moving into a heading or whatever. Links
and tables also seem to work and you can select across pages, unlike with
iWork I also briefly looked at Excel and VO now recognizes the grid, so
things seem to be better there as well.

You are! You gotta do like George said.

I'm uploading the preview to my public Dropbox for you guys now to make it
easier. This way you guys have a direct download link to the .pkg file. But,
meanwhile, here is what you need to do.

It should still be up, but you might
have to possibly command+tab to find it. Once you've done this, again, hit
the check for updates default button.

Now, in the table, you should see Microsoft Word Preview 15.9. Now mind you,
I don't know if you have to update to this in order to then get up to the
accessible 16.9, or if the original poster made an error in that version
number. I've not quite yet gotten that far. I'm in the process of doing
this with you right now as I type this, so I'll let you know if there are
further steps, once I know. Anyway, this Word Preview 15.9 installer should
say it's about 700MB in size, give or take a little bit here or there. Again,
it already should be checked. Just navigate as usual, let it download, then
once it's done, go through the installer like normal. Then, close Word, if
it doesn't make you do so already, and once this 15.9 update has been
installed, relaunch Word, then try it out. If it still doesn't work, then
perform these steps to check for updates again until it says there are no
updates available. If then it doesn't still work, then I will need to
 research things further.

 Chris.

Microsoft just updated the office 2015 preview and it now seems to work
with
VoiceOver quite a bit better. I had a brief play with Word and the
document
is now readable, and formatting information - spelling errors, font,
etc are
exposed properly and can be seen. It also announces it automatically
when it
changes, so you know when you’re moving into a heading or whatever.
Links
and tables also seem to work and you can select across pages, unlike
with

iWork I also briefly looked at Excel and VO now recognizes the grid, so
things seem to be better there as well.

HELLO,

I hope what I am going to post is not off topic. I am having problems
completing the installation of Office 16 upgrade. I have gotten as far as
downloading the upgrade, but then I seem to get into a loop where I get the
busy, busy busy!!! thing. This occurs for several minutes, so the only
option left is to force quit the installation. I am wondering if someone who
has gone through the installation process and is running the update can give
me some ideas on how to trouble shoot thisthis, so I can complete the
process. Thanks in Advance.

Re: Office 16.9 accessbility improvements

2015-04-15 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi all,

The Office 2016 Preview can be directly and officially downloaded from
Microsoft. Here is the link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=523849

As others have mentioned, once downloaded and installed, updates can be
installed by opening any of the Office apps, accessing the help menu, then
choosing “check for updates”.

To view more information about the Preview, access this link:
https://products.office.com/en-us/mac/mac-preview

To access the release notes for the April 14th update that includes improved
VoiceOver accessibility, access this link:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3048768

I can confirm that basic VoiceOver accessibility support is now present in
Microsoft Word. Tables are recognized, though I did experience issues with
entering and leaving them as well as reading their contents. Certainly it is
not as simple as merely arrowing through a Word document, entering a table, and
using TAB and SHIFT+TAB to move through cells as Windows users might be used to
doing. The issue may well be simply that I’m not familiar with the app. I
haven’t had time to check out the new Excel or PowerPoint yet, but Outlook has
been pretty accessible for a while now. Ultimately, while there is surely room
for improvement, this is huge news. I’m excited now that as VoiceOver users,
we’ll be able to play with the preview apps and submit feedback to Microsoft
throughout the beta cycle, and such feedback will now be more than “it doesn’t
work”. :)

Cheers!

Grant

George,

For goodness sake dude! calm down! I wasn't doubting you. I simply said I
didn't recall having to sign in. I never said even once that I didn't
believe you. Man! Quit being so defensive most of the time! It's all
good.

No the office you have on your mac if you have 365 is version 14.xxx, the
one we are talking about is office 16 which is in as you would call beta
which Microsoft is now in the beta preview stage thus the name preview.

You can use preview along side office 2011 for mac, and you do not have to
sign in with any account to use it.

Hi all,

The Office 2016 Preview can be directly and officially downloaded from
Microsoft. Here is the link:

As others have mentioned, once downloaded and installed, updates can be
installed by opening any of the Office apps, accessing the help menu, then
choosing “check for updates”.

To view more information about the Preview, access this link:

To access the release notes for the April 14th update that includes
improved VoiceOver accessibility, access this link:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3048768

I can confirm that basic VoiceOver accessibility support is now present in
Microsoft Word. Tables are recognized, though I did experience issues with
entering and leaving them as well as reading their contents. Certainly it
is not as simple as merely arrowing through a Word document, entering a
table, and using TAB and SHIFT+TAB to move through cells as Windows users
might be used to doing. The issue may well be simply that I’m not familiar
with the app. I haven’t had time to check out the new Excel or PowerPoint
yet, but Outlook has been pretty accessible for a while now. Ultimately,
while there is surely room for improvement, this is huge news. I’m excited
now that as VoiceOver users, we’ll be able to play with the preview apps
and submit feedback to Microsoft throughout the beta cycle, and such
feedback will now be more than “it doesn’t work”. :)

Cheers!

Re: Office 16.9 accessbility improvements

2015-04-15 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Yes, it's accessible to install. Yes you'll get it with Office 3 65. By
preview we just mean it's a public preview. It's not officially been
released yet. It's just a public beta preview for now. This is why I said
it's so so important that these bugs, we report to Microsoft, and when they
do! do things that are right/good, we contact them and pat them on the back
for a job well done. That! is what will very much encourage them to keep
moving forward in the right direction. If we give up on them at this point,
they'll do the same in return.

Again, their accessibility line is:

1-800-936-5900.

Chris.

Gabriel.

Re: Office 16.9 accessbility improvements

2015-04-15 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi,
If I download MS Word for Mac using my Office 365, will I get this
accessibility everybody is talking about. I'm a bit confused with it being
called a preview app.
Is installing Word on the mac accessible?

Certainly it is
not as simple as merely arrowing through a Word document, entering a table,
and using TAB and SHIFT+TAB to move through cells as Windows users might be
used to doing. The issue may well be simply that I’m not familiar with the
app. I haven’t had time to check out the new Excel or PowerPoint yet, but
Outlook has been pretty accessible for a while now. Ultimately, while there
is surely room for improvement, this is huge news. I’m excited now that as
VoiceOver users, we’ll be able to play with the preview apps and submit
feedback to Microsoft throughout the beta cycle, and such feedback will now
be more than “it doesn’t work”. :)

 Cheers!

 Grant
