You can say "show me what to say".

Also if speakable items is on there is a speech feedback window and there is a
menu where you can go to speech comandslist. IT is kind of a table with
expandable items.

Les hi.
Have you tried just using the escape key and not command escape? You're right
about the sound being the recognition signal, so I don't get either why it
isn't working.

Ricardo, you mentioned earlier reporting things to Apple. Although I have done
this, I suspect some poor person has been assigned to read all this stuff we're
saying, so I think they know. I feel sorry for them if they have to write a
memo to someone or something on all this stuff we're saying.

Okay, I said a couple of the phrases in the calibration setup and I heard a

Re: dictation success!

2012-07-31 Thread Karen Lewellen
Yes Donna, very happily productively and successfully using dos to run my
two businesses every day.
In fact there is very very little I actually desire doing that I cannot
do in dos. My machines are tools not toys. there is one thing I can
firmly do given the discussion here, I have one of the best word processors in
the world, wordperfect, with printer drivers updated and access
maintained
regularly.

Dos in various forms is still updated as well.
I have an older mac presently, set up to run pro tools under the outspoken
umbrella, and only used for this.
I read this list daily, and witness people going through issues constantly
that I would not be able to make time for professionally, keeping track of
things that remain issues. Likewise, unless this
changed in ml, firefox is still not an option, something I can use in
Linux if I desire. so while I know the mac adds advantages, it will be,
for me another and I speak for no one but myself, no total replacement.

At least I can give apple $99 for training though which will be helpful
when the time comes.

Karen,

There are two different speech features. You can activate, one, both, or
neither of them.

One is Dictation. this is new to ML. It allows you to dictate what you want
to write any time that you are in a text field. This feature is also on the
newest iPad, and the iPhone 4s. You can, however, accomplish similar things
on an older iPhone using apps like Dragon Dictation.

The other is an option in Accessibility under System Prefs called Speakable
items. This you can configure to let you control many different things on your
Mac, opening and closing apps, opening and closing documents, finding the time
and date, and many other things. It is closer to Siri on the iPhone 4s. It
was in older versions of the Mac OS, but it did not work very well.

Hope this clarifies things.

Re: dictation success!

2012-07-31 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi all,
I am writing this using dictation. Regarding the question about getting the
date, I think there is some confusion.
Dictation is not what is used for getting the answer to your question what is
the time or what day is it you need to use speakable objects.
For dictation, you will be double pressing your function key or some other key
that you have assigned to begin dictation and then pressing the function key
again only once or whatever key you have it assigned to be as your dictation to
stop talking.
For the speakable options, you will probably use the default escape key unless
you have reassigned I found I needed to reassign the escape key for speakable
options and used F10 as that was the one other seem to be using. When using F10
for escape or whatever other key you have assigned, what you need to do is,
hold down the key down while you are speaking.

I am having lots of fun with this dictation and speakable options!
Take care,
Sharon

Donna,

I will give that a go, the issue with the calibration aspect, which some have
suggested is that I do not see how you can use that with Voice Over enabled…

Yes, you need to press and hold the key. I have also found that it helps
to hold it for about a half second before you start speaking. Also, in
system prefs make sure you have the right listening method checked. It's
in Accessible Items under Listening key tab. You have two choices, one is
listen when key is pressed, the other is listen when keyword is spoken.

Hi Neal,

I also tried using the accent key, but couldn't get that to work either, so
went with F10. I have a keyboard shortcut to mute speech, so don't use the F10
mute all that much.

I also found that the keyword "computer" doesn't work. I had better luck using
Victoria, which is the name of the voice I'm using. So, not sure why computer
doesn't seem to work, but you might try a different keyword.

you are using a usb microphone, you may have to going to sound
preferences and set the input source to be that USB microphone.

Re: dictation success!

2012-07-31 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Donna,

I've not gone with the F10 idea, as F10 is also mute on the Mac, which can
cause issues for obvious reasons…

I've used the key directly below esc, however, whilst I can make it work every
now and then not any other time… I tried the alternative of using the
constantly listen option, being able to call out, computer what time is it,
rather floats my boat…

neither option are working for me…! any thoughts.

thanks.

Yes, the key acts like a push-to-talk, so it works as long as you hold it down.
I set mine up to listen for a keyword, but then I'm on a desktop so don't have
to worry about battery life or heat. It's pretty neat, though; I can just call
out, "Alex, what time is it" and get told, or tell it to open an app or quit
something.

Neal,

Yes, you need to press and hold the key. I have also found that it helps to
hold it for about a half second before you start speaking. Also, in system
prefs make sure you have the right listening method checked. It's in
Accessible Items under Listening key tab. You have two choices, one is listen
when key is pressed, the other is listen when keyword is spoken.

I have found it thank you, my question now is why is it not working!

I have enabled it all, and turned the feature on, yet, even by changing the
command key and restarting nothing happens.

what is unclear, is am I supposed to press and hold down the key I nominate?

thanks for any hands on practical usage info.

What you are talking about is speakable items. Go to system preferences,
accessibility, and find it in the table of options. From there, select the tabs

Can I just ask, are we saying with ML you can ask it what day etc it is, if so,

Re: dictation success!

2012-07-30 Thread Alex Hall
The problem is for us non-macbook users who have no function keys. If that's
you, you must go into dictation and speech and set the activation to be
something else using the popup menu. I chose pressing either command key twice.

Re: dictation success!

2012-07-30 Thread Alex Hall
These are commands you can give, like "what time is it" or "open iPhoto". You
can even select buttons shown in the currently open dialog just by speaking
them. If you are at all familiar with Windows speech recognition, it's like
dictation is the text input part of that and speakable objects is the other
part that accepts commands for system operations.

You're right, I'm really sorry for the misinformation. I keep getting the

Ok, easy enough. What is this about speakable Items I'm seeing how does that
effect this. Sorry I'm so late coming into this, I've been at work today and
not able to keep up with this a lot as they haven't upgraded us yet. Thanks for
your patience guys.

Re: dictation success!

2012-07-30 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Well, you going to dictation and speech. That's off the system preferences
window. Then, you turn the dictation on by pressing the radio button. A
dialogue will come up explaining what dictation is and a little bit about how
to use it. Then, if you want to use the default key, you just use the FN key
twice to start dictating when you get in to a text area. Your Mac wil ping at
you to let you know it's listening. When done, just press FN once and you will
be pinged at again to let you know it's not listening. There's a limit; so,
you can only go so far before you get pinged at to let you know it can't take
anymore.

twice.
Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

You go into system preferences, then accessibility. Interact with a table and
select dictation. Turn it on, then follow the dialogs. If you are using a usb
microphone, you may have to going to sound preferences and set the input source
to be that USB microphone.

Re: dictation success!

2012-07-30 Thread Alex Hall
I followed the suggestion of another lister, and it works perfectly.
First, enable speakable items, obviously.
Second, re-assign the dictation key (I use f10, as was suggested, but I imagine
any valid key would work).
Third, restart your mac.
All should be working now. I don't know what will happen the next time I
restart, but for the moment it is all going perfectly.
