Re: i'm having problems updating my MacBook Pro retina 2014 that's mid2014 to Catalina

2020-01-13 Thread 'Dan' via MacVisionaries
hello list and everyone who's help.

well, here's the outcome of my situation.

I did contact Apple today. We went through several procedures and I wasn't able
to update to Catalina. however, Mojave is still on the system now.

Apple suspects there is something wrong internally in my computer because they
stated that it should upgrade to Catalina with no problems.

Even when Apple was helping me, they got the same error that I got in that the
system was not properly configured.

The suggestion is that I should take it to an Apple store and have it looked at
to see what's wrong with it.

However I decided not to do that, because I don't wanna spend any additional
money on this computer. For the more because we don't drive we have to get
somebody to take us to a store.

They however did not mention about sending us a box to send it in so at this
point I'm gonna leave it at that.

Thanks everybody for helping.

hello list,

So what I have is Yosemite 10.10.5.

I log into the App Store downloaded Catalina, but I am unable to install it.

Reason it says my system is not configured properly. And by the way I couldn't
read this with voiceover somebody sided had to tell me this.

So it tells me my system is configured properly but it doesn't tell me how to
configure it or where to go to get the information to configure it.

So it looks like I'm probably stuck with Yosemite on this machine.

Any more suggestions.

And by the way guys I appreciate everyone's help.

Hi Dan,

I don't believe that you're stuck with Yosemite. To confirm, could you go to
the Apple menu, to About This Mac and let me know exactly what it says about
your Mac. That is, amount of memory, MacOS version, Mac model if available on
that screen. If it's not on that screen, you may need to get it under the
System Information button. I realize that you've already mentioned some of
this info, but I need to confirm.

Second thing. Do you have an external USB HD or anything like that so we can
see about installing things on it as a temporary step? Thanks.

If you have the mac os installed even if it's os 10.10
Go to the app store and search for the available os which may be Catalina and
then download it and install.

Hello Mark and list,

Thanks.
Now, I need to reformat the SSD, because I really messed it up.
How do I get a complete download on-line.

If I restart the MBP with one of the other options such as Command Option r,
will this allow me to get a new OS? I asked, because I read some stuff on Apple
and when I followed the instructions, I wound up with Os 10.10.
I suppose I need to talk with Apple. The closest store is 100 miles away and
neither of us drive.
I'd also be willing to discuss this with some one over the phone if any one is
interested in directing me.
I've never messed up a SSD like I did this time.
The other thing is this. I really don't want to put a lot of money into this,
because the battery is starting to go. But it would really be nice if I could
keep it running a while longer.
Later.

That is interesting.
I have a 2012 MacBook Pro 15, that I got when my father past away. It is

2020-01-12 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

Thanks.

Re: i'm having problems updating my MacBook Pro retina 2014 that's mid2014 to Catalina

2020-01-12 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Brad,

Not in my experience. I've used cmd-option-r quite a number of times over the
last year or two for various reasons, and it has always taken me back to a much
older system version. For example, I was working on a Mid 2011 iMac (Silver
Back) and was having problems with the drive. I used cmd-option-r so I would
have full access to the HD without hi-jacking the Recovery Partition. The
cmd-option-r key combination brought me to the Lion installer. I backed off on
that one and went back to my office to grab a High Sierra USB installer
instead. I recall similar situations on newer iMacs as well. I've got a 2014
Mini at work that I can test those combinations on tomorrow. I'll try to
verify things. I've never used cmd-option-shift-r so I'm interested to see
what happens.

If you do not have the installer that was downloaded to the
applications folder, you can download it from the Mac app store. Then
software update will try to install it but you can quit at that point.

Then create a USB installer with a 16gig stick. Two ways to do that.
One is the terminal. Other one (simpler process) is an app called
Install Disk Creator you can download from

From E.T.'s Keyboard...

I don't know how you updated your Mac but, somewhere during the Mojave
life-cycle, Apple changed the formatting of the internal SSD drives. This
change in file format was / is crucial to the successful installation of
Catalina.

Give Apple a call and do some Google searches to make certain that your current
drive format is compatible with Catalina.

Let us know how it goes.

Oh, by the way, this change in format did not apply to spinning drives. So,
I'm assuming you are attempting to install Catalina on the Mac's SSD internal
drive.

hello list,

As the subject says, I'm having problems updating my MacBook Pro mid 2014 to
Catalina.

first off, I downloaded the Catalina update and when I tried to run it it
wouldn't let me run it and said my machine wasn't configured properly.

secondly, I did attempted to do a clean install. With the eight PFS volume said
I still was unable to upgrade the only thing it would do was install Mojave it
would not let me install Catalina.

does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch.
