Amen brother!
actually Erick, I had no idea that one might experience an iphone without
a provider. I still want a real demo, the person at cellar point was
rather confused by the idea of voiceover, even though someone there knew
of the access features.
still the idea of enough coverage and usage support to make the investment
worth it, without having to be tied to a company that may not fully
understand the access is a welcome alternative.

Re: iphone 4 in Canada?

2010-07-01 Thread erik burggraaf
Well, I'm assuming you can do this. IE, If I go into the apple store and by
and Iphone it will take any sim card I want to put in it. Thus I could buy the
phone outright, choose my sim carrier, and ditch them if they give me grief.
Rogers.

The exception would be carriers using CDMA such as bell and Telus. Some of
these are set up so that only a phone from that carrier will activate on the
network which may mean that to use a CDMa carrier you have to buy the IPhone
from the company. That would of course tend to preclude my doing business with
that company.

I'd far and away rather get support from the apple store than from any carrier
I've done business with in canada.

Re: iphone 4 in Canada?

2010-06-30 Thread Esther

Hi Erik,

I Googled this just now, and the unofficial word is July 23, 2010 for
the Canadian release date of he iPhone 4:

http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-news/sources-iphone-4-release-date-in-canada-july-23rd/
See the above link for details. But if experience is anything to go
by, you'll want to look for the date you can put in a pre-order on line.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: iphone 4 in Canada?

2010-06-30 Thread erik burggraaf
Thanks Esther,

I can apparently pre-order it now, and the apple website is toting rogers,
fido, bell, and telus versions. I couldn't find a delivery date on the
pre-order page though and it always gives me pause when I see that. I sort'a
feel like some one who is advancing money on a product or service has the right
to know when to expect delivery.

Hey!
Something I may be able to help with, smiles.
Who is your provider?
For example cellular point stores have them for bell at last in Toronto.
best way might be to phone the cell company you are considering, ask if
they have the a phone and for a dealer near you.

I actually held one a month back or so here in Toronto.

Re: iphone 4 in Canada?

2010-06-30 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Karen, I can understand what the appeal might be for a lot of people,
especially if you are lucky enough to be in love with your phone carrier.

For myself I can honestly say that nothing on earth would induce me to buy a
phone from any carrier I've had the misfortune to deal with in Canada. not
bell or telus, and especially not rogers. In case I should ever be forced to
buy a phone from a carrier I'll be buying the phone outright and never
approaching anything that looks like a contract. Bad bad bad news.

In this case I think I'll quite happily grab one from the apple store and then
just buy a prepaid simcard for it from probably fido, but maybe I'll check
mobilicity and see if they can support it.

Re: iphone 4 in Canada?

2010-06-30 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, no, fido is not rogers. It's weird, but they are two seperate companies,
both owned by rogers, using the same GSM towers. The probable reason for this
is that Rogers physicly owns those towers, giving them a communications
monopoly. It's illegal to have a communications monopoly in Canada according
to what I've read.

So they have a monopoly, but really they don't.
