n800 USB OTG adapter
The Nokia n800 USB OTG adapter costs a measly six Canadian dollars. http://www.electronicproductonline.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1781 Mini USB B connector for Nokia N800 Female A USB connector for standard USB devices Compact size makes it easy to carry I recently purchased a Plantronics 470 USB headset. It's Skype friendly. http://www.headsetzone.com/-audio470usb.html I'm planning to use it primarily for podcasting. Would the OTG adapter enable me to use the Plantronics 470 as the n800's microphone? Is it possible to create an mp3 file of a podcast in the n800 somehow? I'll save money if I don't have to buy a bluetooth headset. Can the n800 be a mobile podcasting platform? Re: pipe character on n810
You can remap the n810's built-in hardware keyboard and replace the yen or euro symbol with the pipe | symbol. Edit the /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/nokia_vndr/rx-44 file. Change this... key { [ m, M, euro, euro ] }; To this... key { [ m, M, bar, bar ] }; Do a hard reset. Pipe | is now Fn-m. I found the above info by googling. URL available on request. Finding | on the n800's virtual keyboard is a little tricky, too. First select Caps (second row down on your far lefthand side) and then select !e (third row down on your far righthand side) http://sillyblog.net/images/screenshot_20080114_3.png Then select Symbols (top row, second closest to your far lefthand side) and then select | (see URL below) http://sillyblog.net/images/screenshot_20080211.png It's above the copyright symbol, next to pi. But with N770 the escape hardware key is good for escaping VIM. It's true that there's no escape virtual key, but not necessary. Yes, there is a hardware button above the Home button on the n800 that can be used as an Esc key. Problem solved. And I was unable to find the dash (-) symbol on the virtual keyboard. This is needed for many UNIX commands (ls -f) as I'm sure you know. This is hard to understand. There must be a dash symbol, near the numbers. In what language are you working with your Tablet? American English. I found the dash symbol. Yes, it's on the virtual numeric keypad. Problem solved. I'm a touch typist and never use a keypad. I'm sure hackers found it there right away. http://sillyblog.net/wordpress/?p=10 Took this picture (see URL above) using the n800's camera. I described it as an unflattering self-portrait in my blog, but I actually sort of like it. Has image quality improved in OS2008? apps install problem
Mind if I ask another dumb question? Downloaded base-repository.install (for OS2007) to Mac mini. Uploaded base-repository.install from Mac mini to n800 via USB. No problem. Application Manager - Application - Install from file... - Select application - Removable memory card - base-repository - Add new catalog? - OK - Select connection - Cancel - Unable to refresh list. Last refreshed list is shown. Changing to offline mode did no good. The n800 insisted on making a wireless connection to the web. The thing is, no wireless hotspot is available to me now. I'm planning to install a WAP in my room and connect it to a wired router eventually, but not tonight. Am I doing something wrong? There must be some way to install apps without WiFi. If you're able to use xterm, then you'll find a real Debian system with usual features. But I don't understand your remark about WiFi. Every time you change your /etc/apt/sources.list, you should run 'apt-get update' with an active internet connection. It's the same. Silly me. I just assumed that anything you can do in Linuxland without xterm can be done better with xterm. Thanks for correcting my erroneous thinking. In an earlier post to this list, you said that one could manually download the deb packages directly from the web repositories to your PC and then transfer them to your tablet via USB. Then install them directly with Application Manager. Red Pill Mode isn't needed to do it this way, right? I'm sorry that I mentioned it earlier--it's a bit of a red herring, I guess. I like the way that it lists dependencies. I've had some difficulties finding the proper deb packages at the web repositories. Flasher for Mac OS X problem
I'm using the Nokia 770 Flasher for Mac OS X v0.8.1 for the first time. The external memory card is removed from the n800. The USB cable is connected directly from the n800 to the Mac mini--no USB hub. The n800 is turned off. I use the flasher to locate the image and select it. I wait until the flasher says Suitable USB device not found, waiting and then I turn on the n800. I press down on the Home button as I press down on the power button. Here what I get... Bluetooth 2.0 keyboards
http://www.apple.com/keyboard It's as if Apple designed it just for me. Their new wireless keyboard is the one that I want to use with the n800. Small and lightweight enough to carry in a day pack. Ideal for use in a motel room while traveling. I'm worried that maybe Apple has crippled it in such a way that it won't work with the n800. I hope not. Another new thin Bluetooth 2.0 keyboard that caught my eye is the Sigma Elysium. The metallic copper color would nicely complement the n800, I think. It's only available in Japan so far. http://www.newlaunches.com/archives/ultra_stylish_bluetooth_keyboard.php The iGo model SBT5E (formerly ThinkOutside Sierra) Stowaway keyboard can be found online for as little as $80US. http://www.compsource.com/pn/SBT5ER/Igo_1121 Sony is marketing the model VGPXTBTUE Stowaway keyboard, which costs more and has only four rows of gray keys instead of the Sierra's five rows of black keys.
