One question / note on cards larger than 2GB where you are formating a single
file system you will need to use ext3 instead of ext2 so ext3.ko would need
to be loaded as well. ext2 will only go up to 2GB

Levi,

I'm with you. Using scp works a lot better than the USB cable. The real
fun comes if you use the 770/n800 as a middle man between your laptop/desktop
and phone. Create your own ringtones and backgrounds and load them right up.
The heck with paying 1.99 for a 15 second capture, or someones bad anime
artwork. *grin*

For even more "fun" use fuser (to the developers, thanks you got it working
faster than I could) then if you have openssh installed (windows, mac or
Unix, I've tested windows and linux) you can mount a drive/dir of your
desktop and use it as if it were a local drive. Right at the moment I have a
770 that thinks it has 600GB of drive space, and I'm 40 miles away from the
parent box.

when i copy more than one file at the same time the transfer gets stalled.

anyone has tried to format the mmc card with ext2 or any other fs ? which is
the best for this purpose ? i only mount the mmc from linux so non-vfat is
not a problem.

I have questions regarding that, I just did some file transfer and I
move a couple of files with no problem. When the 3rd came up it took a
while to transfer (the size was the same). Then I move some more, and
I unmount it. (using linux)

The unmounting took considerable time, around 2 minutes. In the past,
unmounting it is almost automatically.

On top of that I got 1 file corrupted (it wasn't the one that hanged
during transfer). Any idea what could be going on and what steps
should I take to keep my storage up to speed.

This is because, on linux, it's copying the data asynchronously (in
the background), so when you go to unmount the device, it blocks until
all the actual file transfer is completed. I noticed in the past that
I would get file corruption problems when transferring large amounts
of data to the device via usb; it seemed like the 770 was just getting
overwhelmed with too much data at once. Now I tend to use wifi/scp or
an external card reader for getting data onto the card.

It could be that you have removed the USB cable without 'ejecting' it
first from Windows (if you use Windows). It can be done from the icon on
the system tray. In N770 the trick for safe MMC usage is to wait for few
seconds after opening the memory card cover, in case the warning dialog
comes late or unmounting takes longer than usually (e.g. because of low
RAM).

[maemo-users] os2006 frequent vfat badblocks

2007-01-24 Thread bencer

as i've begun to use a bit more the mmc memory of my n770 (now i use it as
music player) i get corrupted mp3 files that media player can't play.

i've noticed that the vfat fs gets corrupted and has plenty bad blocks:

# mkdosfs -c -v /dev/sdb1
mkdosfs 2.11 (12 Mar 2005)
/dev/sdb1 has 32 heads and 32 sectors per track,
logical sector size is 512,
using 0xf8 media descriptor, with 1002496 sectors;
file system has 2 16-bit FATs and 16 sectors per cluster.
FAT size is 245 sectors, and provides 62623 clusters.
Root directory contains 512 slots.
Volume ID is 45b77a5a, no volume label.
