Well, it goes to one place at the time. So, you're proposing that
music would switch to loudspeakers when alarm comes and after alarm
it would switch back to headphones? That could sound wierd...

Device has so called voip-mode implemented by the media-server
which AFAIK should take care of that automatically.

In this case, this is the aspect I'm missing. If I understand you
correctly the routing of audio is at system level rather than at
application level? IOW switching the audio for one application
switches it for all? Anyway, when I started this thread, my intention
was to bring forth a problem that I have experienced that could
perhaps be addressed in a future hardware (despite the fact that the
routing can be software controlled the limitation is apparantly in the
hardware) release.

Having said that, knowing what I know now, I still think the built in
SIP client could have a more sensible logic behind where it's playing
its alarm than simply always playing it through the headphones if
these are connected. For example, returning to Eero's example and in
addition to Luca's suggestion: if there is audio in the headphones at
the time of the alarm route the alarm to the headphones, else to the
speakers. On the other hand, if you are listening to music while the
phone is ringing, you will want to turn it off before answering the
phone which somewhat eliminates the problem...

(obviously) shuts down the speakers, with the unwanted side effect
that I will not hear ring tones unless I have the headset plug in my
ear (this is true whatever the client is (Skype, Gizmo, Ekiga... ).

I guess this is hardware controlled, and that there is really no way
around it, but what is the situation with a BT headset? Is it
different, or is all audio similarily rerouted to the BT headset?

Finally, I know the IT where not designed to be used as phones, but
now that they are usable as phones, it's a shame that practical issues

Just after sending the above off I found this in the
http://lists.maemo.org/pipermail//maemo-users/2008-July/022127.html:

You're mistaken :) The fm radio ui has buttons to toggle between speaker
and headphone output. As for the bt headset case, dunno.

This suggests it would be possible to reroute the audio of the ring
tone to the speaker while the headset is plugged in.

This is also a problem on the desktop for VoIP applications - ideally
you would like to have sound profiles - alarm sounds go both to
speakers and headsets, and application sounds only go to the
headphones (if they're plugged in).

In a typical home office, I listen to music, but if I have to plug in my
headphones before answering a VoIP call, it's a pain in the rear.

Cheers,

You don't have to use headphones for VOIP - the tablet has a mic as
well as speakers. THe swtching is automatic, so it's completely your
choice whether to use headphones or not.

I would answer your question with another question: Would you
remember to unplug the headset after each call? and, at least for me,
the answer is No. But obviously the solution should not be another
manual switch, but an automatic.

What surprised me about the information above was that it *is*
possible to programmatically route the audio independent on the
hardware attached.

That's true, but the IT is not a desktop computer.

I agree. Answering the phone only to ask the caller to hold while
(s)he is forced to listen to crackles and pops while I plug in my
headset is not a 2008-way of carrying out a phone call. VoIP is
however :)

Surely an incoming call should flash the LED or blink the screen or
something if the headphones are plugged in?
