Um, this isn't quite how freeze pushes work. It's not a request that someone
update it. It's a packager saying that they've already updated it in SVN and
they're asking one of the few who have privileges to submit packages with new
version to the build system to submit it (as well as giving others a chance to
 discuss the proposed update).

tmb is the virtualbox maintainer and I imagine he'll update it some time
 soon.

[Mageia-dev] Fail2Ban vs Blockhosts vs DenyHosts vs iptable throttle for SSH

2013-02-19 Thread Robert Fox
Hello all!

After reading this article:
http://it.slashdot.org/story/13/02/16/2129244/ssh-password-gropers-are-now-trying-high-ports?utm_source=rss1.0mainlinkanonutm_medium=feed

I have been using Blockhosts (http://www.aczoom.com/blockhosts) for many
years now without issue (I also use a certificate with passwords turned
off) but I leave the port as standard 22

I never tried the others, so not sure which is most effective . . .

My question is two fold:

1) I was curious of what others use on Mageia - and your experiences

2) Should we not have something standard in the SSH config during
install as a dependency? Make it automatic so at least the standard
config of ssh is a bit more protected from bot scans??

I'm interested to see what everyone says on this list . . .

Have a nice day-

Cheers, R.Fox

  Is a firewall a sysadmin's or packager's choice?
A sysadmin choice. Pushing always more stuff 'by default' doesn't help
 users to make educated choices.

On one hand I agree, on the other hand - we want a distribution which
simply works and common choices are made (like which firewall) from the
distro side - a good enough Sysadmin can then change to his/her liking
afterwards. This is more or less a distro philosophy question, but
look why Mint has become so popular - because many choices are made
upfront for the user - yet the flexibility is in the system (and enough
packages) for an advanced user to change them!

As long as the default settings are documented upfront - I see no issue
in making such a decision on behalf of the average user - and making a
more security robust distribution.

BTW, there is no Mageia package for BlockHosts - but fail2ban and
DenyHosts there are packages . . .

[Mageia-dev] Huh? Urpmi package numbers . . .

[Mageia-dev] Can't win - or, best of both worlds . . .!

2012-11-23 Thread Robert Fox
There has been much discussion over the KDE NetApplet and the lack of
reliability with it - on my laptop (Thinkpad X220) it crashes regularly
and I can't get it to switch between WWAN0 and WLAN0 without failing.
Strangely, under Gnome - the Gnome network manager works flawlessly. I
can easily start and stop the WiFi or UMTS connection without problems.

On the other hand, I use Evolution as my main e-mail client (since many
years now) - oddly, when I am in Gnome - I can not click on calendar
invites (accept / decline) - but in KDE using Evolution - I can.

So now I have to login to Gnome to get the UMTS to work, and then logout
and login to KDE just to accept meeting invites . . . Kinda painful.

My dream is to have KDE networking working as well as Gnomes' - although
with every successive release of KDE (we now have 4.10 B1 in Cauldron) -
the networking applet never gets better.

And for the life of me, I can't figure out WHY a native Gnome app like
Evolution has problems with calendar meeting invites - but the same
program works fine under KDE.

Very strange and frustrating . . . Sorry for the rant . . . .

Happy Thanksgiving (to those from the States) -

anything other than GNOME: who cares? Maybe for XFCE VLC is a better fit
   or something.

VLC works with any destop and any OS.
Most of people coming from Windows already use VLC.
LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird and VLC are the most universal
  applications.
They allow easy migrations from Microsoft.
However, I prefer Konqueror and kmail in a KDE environment.

  You really like VLC :)

If there is no KDE mediaplayer, then maybe file a bug. Totem in KDE is
  not the best match.

Neither is dragon player nor is totem a good thing in Gnome.

Both application suffer from the same cause: as soon as we enter the
video section we also become victims of the free/non-free/tainted
issue. Result: totem as well as dragon player as provided by the free
DVD are not able to play any kind of video, unless you install certain
plugins. Now the direct issue is, how both applications deal with
this. None of both is able to list all necessary plugins to play the
wanted video - it's always the dance a plugin is missing! - Which
plugin? then a forum helper tells you about one plugin, you install
it, restart totem and - Bang! - it kills you with another A plugin is
missing!. Do that 3 times and maybe it works for this one video,
coming back with the next video format. Same with dragon player.

It's an upstream issue all right, but why is it not possible to
include a function which lists ALL needed plugins, so you can install
all of them? Or even better, a meta-package for those who want it all,
which installs all available plugins for video play? I understand the
reasons why they can not be installed automatically, but it would be a
great step forward if all needed plugins can be installed in ONE step.

Apart from that and not judging by lookfeel, vlc really is the best
when it comes to playing media.

I second that last comment!

[Mageia-dev] shutdown stalls

Using Cauldron, all machines will not shutdown (using KDE) when clicking on
turn off computer

I get dropped into a text screen and it hangs - only when I hit ctrl-alt-del
does the shutdown process continue, but the system then reboots.

This is happening on four different types of machines.

I could not find a bug in bugzilla for this one -

Anybody else?

[Mageia-dev] Strange message in Firefox

2012-09-06 Thread Robert Fox
When I open a site with video, a strange pop-up comes up and says:

Make sure that Totem is properly installed.

[rfox@ThinkFox ~]$ locate mozilla-viewer

But it looks like it is there . . .

[Mageia-dev] Issue with latest Evolution (evolution-3.5.5-1.mga3)

2012-08-08 Thread Robert Fox
Lately, Evolution as been acting a bit odd - I have always had it set up
under Mail Preferences - HTML Messages - Loading Images - set to
Never Load Images from the Internet

When I want to load the messages, I just click Ctrl-i and it would
normally load the images.

Now, if I click on Ctrl-i - a task starts below which states Saving
user interface - but evolution stops responding - and when I click on
something else further tasks start but hang - and I have to use killev
to kill Evolution.

Strangely, after killev, this is still running:

rfox 3947 0.0 0.1 594848 8488 ?SLl 11:36
0:00 /usr/lib64/evolution-source-registry

So I can force this to happen if I try and load images on an HTML mail

Anybody have the same issue?

Cheers,

[Mageia-dev] Streamtuner Streamripper - MIA

2012-06-24 Thread Robert Fox
I just discovered to my dismay that Streamtuner and Streamripper are no
longer available as packages in Mageia - These programs, although no
longer supported, worked quite well - and I can't seem to find a good
alternative yet (for recording Internet radio) under Linux -

Is it possible to have them available in Mageia (maybe as unsupported
packages??) Looks like someone decided they don't belong in Mageia
anymore (https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2202)

[Mageia-dev] net_applet segfaulting

2012-06-19 Thread Robert Fox
I use a UMTS card on my laptop - and use net_applet to reactivate the
card (with PIN) when I awake the machine from sleep.

From KDE - frequently when I click on net_applet to further click on
Manage Wireless Networks - sometimes it disappears -

After running it from the cli - I get:

Cannot open /dev/input/eventX: Permission denied
Cannot open /dev/input/eventX: Permission denied
Cannot open /dev/input/eventX: Permission denied

So for some unexplained reason it segfaults and I have to start it

Probably because of an architecture mismatch (32 vs 64 bits).

Strange - I installed this on another Cauldron running system (one that
I kept upgrading from Mageia 1 to Cauldron) - and it worked even though
it was a 64bit install.

Now I find out that there are several missing 32bit libraries like
libglib2.0_0, libfontconfig1, libXrender, libsm6, libXext6, etc.

I don't recall having to install them on the other system to get it to
work under a 64bit Mageia.

Odd.

Thanks - got it to work . . .

Nope, but I got into same pb during a while, the freezing occurred

I have ruled out CPU and graphic over utilization - as well as heavy
network traffic. I also just experienced this phenomenon on my newish

I have yet to find the cause, and the logs up to this point are not

[Mageia-dev] Strange system stalls - neep a tip

2012-05-21 Thread Robert Fox
Hello All -

I am experiencing a strange problem with a specific machine running
Cauldron. I am beginning to believe it is NOT a Mageia problem because
when I boot into Ubuntu 12.04 the problem exists as well. I think it
may be hardware related but I can not find what is causing this issue.

The machine is an Acer Aspire x3900 with a quad core ‎AMD Phenom(tm) II
X4 925 Processor - 6GB memory. GeForce GT215 (GeForce 320) card. I am
running the x86_64 version of Cauldron.

The problem occurs under both KDE and Gnome

Basically, the system seems to freeze up (mouse moves) but nothing else
- gkrellem freezes and no errors occur - it just seems to hang - but
magically wake up again after some time (many seconds at a time)

I have checked various logs and can not find any problems - so I am
stumped how to find the source of the problem. I leave the machine
running 24x7, but don't think it is a thermal issue.

When the system runs under Windows 7 (64bit) it appears to run fine.

Any hints what I could check?

 Hello!

If you want to log cpuusage to see if some process has extra high cpu
usage during this freeze you could do something like:

 while true; do date  testfilen.txt ; top -b -n1  testfilen.txt ;
 sleep 1; done

Then you will get top-output every second (sleep 1) or whatever time
you specify for sleep. I think there is a way to do this with top
only, without the delay but not sure which flags to use then (possibly
 top -d 1 -b)

The file testfilen.txt will of course grow quite large after a while,
so you can't keep this running 24/7 maybe, but maybe you could clear
out the file regularly until you get the error situation again and
then based on the date output you should be able to find cpu usage
around the time of the problem.

 Regards,

 David

Thanks for the quick responses. I checked the cpu usage, but there
doesn't appear to be a spike - and the load average in htop is real low:

load average: 0.46, 0.67, 0.56

so if the X server or something else was maxing out the cpu, I'd see
that.

Also, if I use a console in KDE (like yakuake) - the stalls happen in
there as well. At first I though this was Firefox related (like flash
problem or something) because it was most noticeable when I surfed -
firefox freezes off and on and it is really frustrating.

This machine was working fine for at least a year - and I was suspecting
something with the latest kernels and the AMD processor - but have no
evidence.

The search continues . . .

[Mageia-dev] What's with all the fedora named services in Drakxservice??

2012-05-06 Thread Robert Fox
I wanted to check something using drakxservices and noticed here are 8
separate sevices starting with the name fedora in them
(fedora-autorelabel, fedora-readonly, fedora-configure)

Not all services are running and I am not sure what each of these does.
More disturbing is why they are called fedora instead of Mageia?

Also, I noticed 22 different systemd entries - many of which are not
started on boot or not running (like systemd-readahead-collect) - Where
can I read about these to understand more and why so many??

Inquiring minds would like to know . . .

Thanks in advance,

Anywho, I think now that drakxservices shows the systemd stuff - it is

[Mageia-dev] Sleep once, never again . .

2012-04-03 Thread Robert Fox
I have a Thinkpad x220 notebook running latest Cauldron in KDE.
When I close the lid, the system goes to sleep mode - and it awakes

 Anything in the logs?

pm-suspend when manually called from a terminal does work! So I can
manually force the suspend that way - looks like the KDE suspend call

does not trigger it after the first time. There is no error, just
doesn't do anything when I close the lid or request the suspend through

[Mageia-dev] Creating PDFs from a scanned document

2012-03-31 Thread Robert Fox
Just a quick question to the experts out there . . .

I have an HP J5780 All-in-One device - and use the HP Device Manager
software under Mageia - When I scan a document into a PDF, the
converted document is rather large (5MB) in comparison to the same
document scanned under Windows 7 and the HP scan-to-PDF feature (465Kb)
- Just wanted to know why is this and can I influence how compressed or
compact the PDF document is under Cauldron?

I used to scan with Acquire Images or XSane and then paste the scanned
graphic into a LibreOffice document and then create a PDF directly or
use ps2pdf14 to convert a print to file postscript output to PDF
(which results in a comparatively small PDF)

Any advice would be welcome . .

Do you scan at the same resolution?
The best compression would be to use OCR to get text instead of images

Same for kde, well at least okular and gwenview and the kipi plugins.

I found that cups-pdf wasn't installed which explained why

Tried to research it, but it look more like it is for servers than

  the desktop?

As used in the context of systemd just a general mechanism for tracking
processes. In the olden days, a service could exec other binaries quite
happily. Killing the primary pid of the service meant that any other
binaries launched were not necessarily killed. This mean that the
service needed to implement it's own accounting and tracking system and
there was no way to properly track to what service a given processes
 belongs.

Now with cgroups, it's possible to fully track all the processes started
by a given service and kill each of them properly when stopping the service.

In addition it's also possible to identify to which service a given
process belongs. e.g. if something is spinning out of control you can
see it in top and then trace it back to the service itself.

There are numerous other things that can be done with cgroups such as
imposing various limits on a given service (and any subsequent processes
 it spawns).

Overall this is an accounting mechanism that is something very much
baked into systemd. It's an integral part of it. It's not something we
could simply turn off on desktops vs. servers.

However, this isn't really the right place to discuss this topic.

Thanks Col - very informative and helpful!

This should already be fixed. Maybe your mirror lags behind a bit.

I have the latest updates and it just happened - I will rebuild the db
and report back if it happens again.

Just did updates (including rpm-4.9.1.2-22.mga2) on 2 cauldron
installations. Last mirror sync with tier1 was 1:20 hours ago.
  No problems with rpm db

Now I did some more package management:
   - I opened a konsole window, did another check with 'urpmi
--auto-update' which turned up no updates. After that rpm database was
  unlocked. Good.
   - I opened rpmdrake from the konsole and marked all KDE handbooks for
uninstall. I clicked on OK and watched the output in the konsole
  window.
   - after the second handbook urpmi crashed with a segmentation fault
and rpmdrake showed a message box with the same error (segfault).

Then I rebooted the system and starting rpmdrake on the konsole returned:
  * getting lock on urpmi
  * [reading all synthesis files, ok]
  * Error: rpmdb: Thread/process 2794/1397. failed: Thread died in
  Berkeley DB library
  * Error: db4 error from dbenv-failchk: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error,
  run database recovery
  * Error: Unable to open packages index, using db4
  * Error: Unable to open package database in /var/lib/rpm
  * unlocking urpmi database

Mind that this happened with latest updates as written in my previous
  mail.

Adding info: erasing and rebuilding the db does not work. After
removing the _db* I run # rpm --rebuilddb which returns
  :
  * Error: rpmdb: Thread/process 2794/1397. failed: Thread died in
  Berkeley DB library
  * Error: db4 error from dbenv-failchk: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error,
  run database recovery
  * Error: Unable to open packages index, using db4

  Result: system is unusable now.

Solution: I had to manually erase the lock file /var/lib/rpm/.RPMLOCK
After that rebuilding the database worked and urpmi is usable again.

 Ok, here we go again:
I did the same as described earlier:
Updates, then opening rpmdrake and marking all handbook packages for
uninstall. After uninstalling one or two packages rpmdrake segfaults.
Opening it again shows the known errors about the rpm database.

Unfortunately rpmdrake gives no other error message than Segmentation
fault - that's it. So I don't know whether the error messages about
the rpm database are just a result of the segfault or the cause of the
 segfault.

Hello Wolfgang -

Try the rebuild again:
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm --rebuilddb

and then simple do:
urpmi --auto-update -v

That worked for me. When I tried rpmdrake, I also got the corruption
again.

Recurrent pb for me as well. Did you try to add

  nokmsboot

Same pb here, xorg.conf was changed (display driver changed to nouveau).
Re-changed the display driver to nvidia and added nokmsboot to the
boot args, next boot same pb again.

I will file a bug report . . .

KDE should create mountpoints as needed (and it shouldn't really use a
 fixed name cdrom here either).

Are you somehow still using HAL? Can you try stopping hald and see if
things flip over to using a proper system?

Otherwise we'll have to put a hack in somewhere to create /media/cdrom
directory to cope with this limitation.

Thanks for the fast response Col - I do still have hal installed, and I
stopped hald, but didn't seem to help. BTW, it's safe to use
drakxservices to start and stop services even though we are using
systemd now, right??

Try disabling it via systemctl disable hald.service and reboot.

You can use drakxservices to start/stop but it wont list non-sysvinit

First of all, I have udisks2 installed, not udisks, even if the later

 required by gnome-disk-utility (formerly palimpsest).

I can confirm this under Gnome - but under KDE auto-mounting seems to
work.

Nope. Longer term, it would be possible as systemd tracks user logins
and can launch an agent to do this job, but until then you have to do it
manually. This is why urpmi integrate(s|ed?) with HAL to mount CD/DVDs
 when needed for installing stuff.

What I normally do is invoke urpmi with the list of packages that I want in

 be auto-orphaned.

Thanks Shlomi - I was thinking that - but to know the packages I want

   alacarte-0.13.2-3.mga1.noarch
   alsa-plugins-doc-1.0.24-5.mga2.noarch

This is a well known issue.
To clear out the list you need a deep knowledge of the system to
determine which packages are really not needed anymore.

Lately this --auto-orphans line shreddered my whole system on a fresh
install after the first update, several system services could not
start at next reboot, applications did not run, etc. One of the very
few times I had to re-install because of a bug. Call me newbie or
pussy but until this is not a secure function I will never touch it
 again.

Wolfgang, I would never call you a pussy ;-)

I agree with your comments, and that is the reason I brought this topic
to this list - the auto-orphans feature is sometimes unreliable (or
unpredictable) and Mageia should consider either removing it or
improving it so it works as advertised. I too had sporadic problems
with this function and hesitate to use it when it spits out such a list
(where I am not sure what is safe to remove or not)

When Evolution is started again, then I can recover the new message
which crashed during multiple file attachments.

Seems related to holding down the CTRL key and selecting a file to attach . . .

I also see some of the valid points, but bottom line - is that Mageia
should help create working packages for the bigger ticket items (like
Skype) - in a cooperative spirit.

We are not proposing that such packages be included in the ISOs - just
available in a repository which we can trust and know that it works . .

And that's the problem. As misc pointed out, we can't really trust
 proprietary
stuff. No one has any control on the contents of those programms.
And thus we cannot guarantee, that it works. If we add such a package now, it
might work now, but what happens, if we change any library or whatever?
And since it's not OpenSource, we can't fix it, if it's broken.

And to be honest: What is so complicated about installing skype, teamviewer
 or
whatever proprietary crap from the vendor's homepage?
Oh sure, it might force you to read a bit about what you are doing :/

 Oliver

I agree with you that Mageia can't guarantee that such proprietary
software will function - or that it may break with future library
changes. I am also not asking Mageia to trust third party, proprietary
software. All I am asking is that Mageia recognise the need for the end
users to co-exist with their Mac / Winblows counterparts, and that
certain software is unavoidable. Any efforts made to help get such
software to work properly with our distribution would be considered
positive. We shouldn't have to guarantee ANYTHING, just make a
concerted effort to get such software to play nice with our distro!

If you watch what the other major distros are doing related to this
topic - it may give a hint. I am NOT advocating that we have to be like
them, I believe we need to offer the ability and the choice.

As far as forcing someone to read a bit - some apps are more difficult
than others to install - and the install methods are sometimes
dramatically different (from tarball or from RPM or SRPM, etc). This is
not always for the faint at heart. I personally have no problem in
trying to install it myself, and research over the internet whether
someone else has figured it out already - but one of the main reasons I
stuck with Mandriva (and now Mageia) is that I always had a high chance
of finding a working RPM or instructions how to get it to work under the
distro.

enough said . . . I will crawl back into my cave.

Yes, it can give a hint :
   - fedora does not provide any teamviewer package
   - opensuse does not provide any teamviewer package
   - debian does not provide any teamviewer package
   - ubuntu does not provide any teamviewer package

  Agreed.

I just meant, if the package provided by the proprietary supplier does
not work - then we should help ensure it does or make our own that works
for those of us that needs such programs.

Maybe we should have a voting system for our user base - like a wish
list, and if enough people ask for it - we could consider it?

You are free to try to help teamviewer fix their package to make it work
on Mageia, you can already do it now, there's no need to have a voting
 system to consider it.

Sorry Nicolas - I would if I knew how, but unfortunately I am not a
packager nor am I a developer with intimate knowledge of Mageia - I am
simply a power user who enjoys testing the latest (cauldron) and giving

 Ah... and there it is...

This is how most threads like this ends up...

Many users seems to forget this is a community driven distribution,
so if you want something no-one of the current maintainers care
about, you need to do the work, and stop expecting others to do
it for you (unless you pay them)...

So here is a few general points for all users to think about:

 * I am not a packager
- so what stops you from becoming one?
- everyone have had to start somewhere.
- we have packagers that takes on apprentices,
and you can always ask questions on mageia-dev@ ml
and #mageia-dev on irc if you get stuck.

How does one get a mentor? I'd like to learn how to package.

Thanks for your response.

The 32bit version is already installed . .

  [root@foxbase Download]# rpm -qa | grep libxdamage
  libxdamage1-1.1.3-2.mga2

  Any other hints?

Install with --nodeps as our libxdamage1-1.1.3-2.mga2 probably does not
 provide: libXdamage(x86-32)

I think you meant --allow-nodeps - I tried that and you can see the
result below:

[root@foxbase Download]# urpmi --nodeps teamviewer_linux\(1\).rpm
Unknown option: nodeps
A requested package cannot be installed:
teamviewer6-6.0.9258-1.i386 (due to unsatisfied libXdamage(x86-32))
Continue installation anyway? (Y/n)

There were a few requests for TeamViewer in my local Mageia site - I
suggest to add it to our repositories (probably as tainted and as a
 downloading script).

I second that! It would be great to have an official - but tainted
Mageia RPM package!

Cheers,
