I facilitate a group for Gaia University. It used to be that when
someone posted in a forum it would send it out as an email to all the
members and it would include the user name of the one who posted. Now
the user name of the one posting is not displayed in the email. This
is a bit annoying to not know who is posting when you get an email.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 547526] Re: Global setting for allowing registration via the registration form

2015-01-10 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Thinking about it, I wonder if it would actually be needed. If an
institution has one Mahara site, then the site admin makes the decision.
If a Mahara site is uses by multiple institutions then they will have
different registration requirements and the site admin shouldn't decide
for them how to allow new users in, esp. now that we can confirm
registrations.

Also, if we turn of registration allowed, users wouldn't be able to
request access to another institution if they are already members of
one.

Global setting for allowing registration via the registration form

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Opinion

Bug description:
Currently, you can turn registration via the registration form on/off
  via the institution form.

This is fine, but it doesn't give an easy way for the admin to simply
turn off registration for every institution.

This setting could be checked in order to render the 'register' link
on the login form, and also to decide if we even give the institution
  forms the option.

Some kind of interplay with the usersuniquebyusername setting would be
desirable too (talk to Nigel about this).

(Side note - in reality, whether you can register for a given
institution doesn't quite make sense - it's more like whether the
given 'internal' authinstance allows this, and as such it should
really be a configuration setting of the internal auth plugin. Would
be nice to work this in somehow...)

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 547526] Re: Global setting for allowing registration via the registration form

2015-01-10 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
One functionality into this direction is the Confirm registration
setting for the entire site where the site admin can require that
registrations in institutions need to be confirmed by an admin. That
prevents stray user accounts, but does not quite fully fulfil this
feature request.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 548281] Re: forums read and write access - sub groups

2015-01-10 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
The forum management is flexible to allow group admins / moderators to
prevent regular users from posting to a topic. Additionally, groups can
have an editability period beyond which regular group members cannot
edit forum posts anymore.

This doesn't involve sub groups, but that is a different kettle of
fish...

touching the specified link with pre-defined parameter so that
subscriber will be aware that the feed has been updated and reload it

Basic Idea:Add another tick box similar to the Allow Copying
tick box which is called Allow Editing. This allows all people who
can access the view the same editing rights as I have myself.

More complex idea: It would be even better if I could configure
whether editing is possible or not - allowing some individual members
  to edit but not others.

You might say that I could facilitate this functionality by using group views
for each invidividual member but it would be nicer in certain contexts to
allow editing of views I own myself.

A case scenario for this would be in the delivery of NVQs in the UK.
A candidate and an assessor/trainer could collaboratively edit a view
containing a progress tracking table in a text box. This view could
then be submitted to a course group for assessment in the same way
as other views representing untis of their qualification.

users again more freedom to change the look and feel of their pages if
skins are allowed.

3. We created theming guides for 1.8
https://wiki.mahara.org/index.php/Customising/Themes/Theming_Guides to
help visual designers.

4. Not flash, but themes that are available to the community freely and
that are announced publicly are added to
https://wiki.mahara.org/index.php/Themes/Contributed_themes

Title:
  Theme Management

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have a few theme related requests:

  1) It would be great to have true theme management, like Drupal, where
we can visually preview themes and set parameters/options within a
  theme that has been loaded.

  2) It would be great to be able to assign different themes to
different institutions and have an option to allow users to change
  their themes.

  3) It would be really, really nice documentation or tutorials on
theming for Mahara. Maybe I just missed it, but I can't find even
basic info on the structure of pages, etc.

  4) It would be great to have a theme library, so we could create and
  share themes.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 548318] Re: allowing people to select one or more blog posts in configue blog block in view

This can be accomplished using the Tagged journal entries block: If
you give all the blog posts that you want to display together the same
tag, you can display them together. In Mahara 15.04 you will be able to

  Access controls for blog copying

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
  from http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=1082

Now I know why I had missed the blog copying functionality: It is only
visible when the view copying is turned on. Makes sense, but is a bit
tricky, in my opinion. If you are used to the blog block (and you
always start out creating a view with the default setting copying not
allowed) with copying disallowed, then you would not know that you
can decide to allow copying of blog posts if you do not happen to
change that block after allowing copying and chancing upon the
  advanced settings.

Thus, it would be clearer, I think, if the view access page had
information on what is copied (in general terms, i.e. which blocks, or
what can be left out / configured. Is the blog block the only one that
can be left out (looks like that to me)? If so, could there be check
boxes on the access page for (wording open for improvement):

  * allow displaying all blog content of this view in the copied view
  * allow copying of all blog content displayed in this view
  * check each blog block individually to allow copying

I can't find anyway to know what content (views, blogs, forums,
groups) are associated with which institutions. While it's nice that
a single user (student or educator) can access all content from
multiple institutions in once place, it seems logical to want to know
which content elements are associated with which institutions. I
would assume this would need to be displayed in multiple places.

Similarly, it would be nice to have some sort of toggle to be able to
view all content just from one institution at a time.

In our case, we have a large scale network composed of individual
schools. The collaborative network is one institution that everyone
participates in, and then each school has their own institution for
their local communities. Sort of like a disrict vs individual
schools. So - there will be distinctly different content needs for
these two different types, and it would be nice to be able to clearly
know which content came from which institution.

2015-01-10 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 547330 ***

Essentially, with the secret URL, people from outside Mahara can gain
access to a page / collection and leave feedback. Depending on the
settings for the site, they may be able to register an account. Every
site / institution needs to review their usage policy and check if they
allow that are not.

I'll mark this request a duplicate of bug #547330 as that one is more
explicit in what is required.

It would be quite handy to be able to customise the default views created for
a new user. I'm thinking specifically of the dashboard and profile view types.
At present, these are created from a view template, where the templates are
actually views belonging to the root user on id 0. You can view user
information for uid 0 (probably a bug) but not login as that user to modify the
views.

I should think that many sites may want to have a default view layout

Title:
Open external RSS feeds in new window

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  as per http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=3705

An external RSS feed made available via the feed blocktype should open
  in a new window.

I would amend this by saying: The user may want to choose as some
people see it as bad usability (cf.
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/990530.html ) to open new links in a
different browser window / tab. Thus, if possible the regular function
of target= when including a hyperlink could be included and goes
for all links that are associated with this RSS feed, i.e. the feed
address itself and the links to the individual feed items if the
  condensed version is chosen.

the profile page, gets very long and unmanageable. It would be better
to display only a certain number of pages and then have a show all

  user are shown.

Ideally, the user would have some freedom in configuration:

I would consider it a bug that I cannot add an external image to a
portfolio page form the External Content tab in page editing mode.
This option does not exist - only these do External Feed External
  Video Google Apps.

To add an image I have to go to the General tab, add a text box, and
  then link to a URL.

Also, would developers consider having one tool for external media
that determines itself what media you are linking to. Rather than
having to train staff on all the different media types out there and
what they are. I had one person trying to link to a image that was not
an image but had image in the file name. Mahara just told her it was
an invalid media type, maybe there is not much more a computer can do,
but then again there are file type services online that could have
been used to tell her it was an Internet Explorer file?

The think here is I want to easily add an image to a portfolio, and
possible add some text around it, a license, etc.

Hi, sometimes I need to add a text box to a portfolio page and in the
box somehwere link to an image or file from MY Files. I need to be
able to browse my files and select the one I want to link to. At the
moment the link and image button in the inline editor only let me put

Title:
  View invitations to non-members.

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
If you read Attwell and others who are advocating eportfolio use, you
will find that an eportfolio should belong to the students and that
they should have access to this throughout their lifetime. Being able
to create specific views for different purposes is critical to the
success of this approach. Mahara is on the right track in this
regard, however, there needs to more flexibility in terms of how those
  views can be shared.

My preference would be for instances of Mahara to be hosted by
independent companies/institutions that provide low cost accounts for
anyone who wishes to have an eportfolio. In this case the
school/university/business could subsidise this cost for the period of
time the student/employee is with the organisation, so there is an
opportunity for the individual to keep and add to their work when they
  leave.

To this end, I would like to see the capability of inviting audiences, by
email, to see a view of your portfolio by registering as free guest in the
Mahara instance. This way the need to provide public views and secret URLs
would be removed and a public view would then only be used for a wider audience
when the portfolio owner required this to happen.
By bringing people to Mahara in a guest capacity you expose more people to
Mahara and and keep the intimacy that is often required for specific
purposes--not everyone wants a particular view to be publicly available to
those not in the community.

  Keep up the excellent work,

  Scot.

affect only new group's member or new institution's member; previous
group/institution's member will see their quota remained the same as
  before.

This is pretty good if the previous quota is higher than the new
policy but what happens if the quota decided by the group ou
  institution admin is higher ?

Normaly Mahara should then update the quota to the higher number.

If it is not the way Mahara behaves it should. If it is already the
case, the help section has to be updated to explain that if previous
quota for already enrolled users will remain the same or upgraded if
the new setting is higher than before.

Title:
Change the tab order for journal entries

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
found on MyPortfolio by a teacher:

  ---
  A seemingly minor point but...

My understanding is that in a computer form correct practice is to
enable users to tab from one entry field to the next ( although a lot
of people don't know this and use the mouse instead).

Try doing this in a Mahara New Journal Entry. Enter a title. Now,
  tab.

Instead of going to the Body field, which is almost certainly where
you want to be now so that you can make your entry, you're at the
Draft Checkbox. To get to the Body field you've got to pick up your
mouse and place the cursor there.

Tab again and you're at the Allow Comments checkbox. Tab again and
you're at the Save Entry button...

It would be quite nice if this could be fixed...
  ---

I checked this on master and it is also the case there.

  Admin copy collection

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
ADMIN COPY COLLECTION: The ability for an admin to copy a collection
into user accounts when users are added into an institution would be a
great feature. I think most schools add users in from the admin side
as they set up accounts. This would enable a school to select an
entire collection that will be added automatically into a user's
account when the user is added to an institution. Currently we are
adding the 4 necessary views to new users of an institution, but the
student then has to combine the views themselves into a collection.

I'm now having to instruct students to copy the 5 views necessary from
a sample student profile and then instruct them on how to create
their own collection to make their portfolio in accordance with
  university requirements.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 884929] Re: Add option to autocreate users in group member CSV upload

2015-01-10 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Won't fix as per comment from Richard M on the review. The user that is
being created won't have all necessary fields filled in. Thus, it would
be better to use the standard CSV upload first and then the group user
upload. If LDAP is used, users can be imported automatically nowadays.

  (/admin/groups/uploadmemberscsv.php)

The new field ('autocreate') specifies the name of the authentication
authority name that will be used to autocreate users.
This is useful for when users are part of ldap/saml/mnet authentication
methods but haven't been logged in yet (hence not created yet). This allows the
administrators to ensure that these users exist at group member update time
instead of relying on the users logging in first.

For quality assurance purposes, assessed work (in the UK HE context)
has to be moderated by an external verifier, who will require access
to the original work. As assessed work is unlocked from editing when
released back to the student (and I agree that this should be the
case) it would be useful for a teacher to be able to export a
submitted Page as standalone HTML. It would make sense for this to
appear as a link at the bottom of the Page being assessed, e.g. next
to the add to watchlist link. The html snapshots can then be
archived and/or sent to the external verifier for moderation at a
later date. This would also preserve the multimedia richness of the
Page format, in a way that screen shots and PDF printouts cannot.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 800511] Re: Contact Us emails should only go to institution admins when sent by an institution member

2015-01-10 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Contact us messages are only sent to site admins and not institution
admins. This must have been a bug at the time that got fixed.

Title:
Contact Us emails should only go to institution admins when sent by
  an institution member

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Any admin on a site receives Contact Us emails. However, in order to
have a better workflow and to know who is doing what, it would be
better if institution admins received only Contact Us messages that
were sent by members of their institution instead of any message. Many
messages may pertain to things that they don't know about and thus
should not receive messages as then nobody feels responsible for them.

  Thus:
Contact Us message from logged out user - Site Admin
Contact Us message from logged in user No institution - Site Admin
Contact Us message from logged in user with institution - Institution admin
/ admins if in multiple institutions

I would propose not to send the latter message to the site admin to
avoid that admins don't know who also got this email / if somebody
  else already dealt with this.

I would also update the sentence at the bottom to if possible to make
it clear why they get an email:

You receive this message because you are the [site admin / institution
admin for [name of the institution]]. This is an auto generated
notification from [site name]. To update your notification
  preferences, visit URL.

The same should go for Objectionable Content, and the virus messages.
Though for the latter, the site admin should probably receive all
  emails.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 898678] Re: Layout: suggest new 2 column with *much* larger right column

2015-01-10 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Hi Don,

Do you still need a much larger right column? The current ratio for 2
columns where one is bigger than the other is 33:67. Is that sufficient?

Cheers
Kristina

Layout: suggest new 2 column with *much* larger right column

Bug description:
It would be great to have a new 2-column layout with a much larger
  right column.

I find I'm using the existing 3-column with a much larger centre
column for layouts that have a navigation block on the left.

It looks neater and more compact than the simple larger right column
but I could use the extra space of a much larger column for content
such as tables. I'm using these for self-assessment and find I'm
  always running out of room.

Is this a bite-sized improvement that might be achievable quickly?

Bug description:
When you have to invite or remove a lot of users from an institution
on /admin/users/institutionusers.php (or the equivalent for an
institution admin), you need to select each user individually. It
would be more convenient if you could select multiple users at once
  and transfer them.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 919656] Re: Create a layout for mobile access

Mahara can be themed in a responsive layout way and pages thus displayed
optimized for mobile viewing.

Create a layout for mobile access

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
QR codes are all the rage, and available on URL-shortening services
  like bit.ly.

For my employability eportfolio, it would be great to be able to point
a QR code on someone's resume to a portfolio page laid out for mobile
  access.

This could provide the other side of mobile access: viewing a
portfolio easily on a smartphone. In addition to providing convenient
mobile access to employers reading resumes, it could be used by a
candidate as supporting evidence in an interview. Teachers could
probably think of other purposes for it, likely in assessment.

Is this an easy thing to do? Could it be part of core? Has someone
already done it? I don't see it mentioned.

Title:
  Collections email notification?

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Email notifications should be more descriptive. When a collection is
shared, the notification email should say a collection has been
shared with you (rather than just listing the first Page in the
  collection).

Our students often share pages with their faculty mentors. We are
trying to get students to use collections more, because they are often
sharing 3-4 related pages with their mentor at a time.

The faculty mentors are confused about whether or not each student is
sharing individual pages with them, or a collection, because the
notification emails do not differentiate between the two. When a
students shares a collection, the faculty's notification email only
lists the first page in the collection.

Admin configurable # of tabs in Collection

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  In Mahara 1.5.0-dev:

  * view/view.php: Line ~#213 – the value hard-coded in this line controls the
number of tabs displayed in users’
collections. Currently set to 5, a 1024x768 screen size can easily
accommodate 10 or more.

  * artefact/file/blocktype/filedownload/theme/raw/filedownload.tpl: Line ~#5 –
the value in this line controls
the number of characters displayed in a file name in a file download block.
Many user file names are greater than the 20 currently hardcoded.

As requested by users, suggest these values might be made configurable
  by the Site Admin.
