[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1272122] Re: Rotate images

Fair enough. This could go under the individual file editing section.
(The same place where you can set tags and comment permissions for an
individual file.)

Oh, no, I don't mean adding fields for users to specify this. I mean
that Mahara (which already knows the image's dimensions) adds HTML tags
to the image file to tell the browser what size the image is.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1420593] Re: user leaving group and embedded images

2015-03-08 Thread Aaron Wells
Mahara has the ability to use the same physical file (in the filesystem)
for multiple different file artefacts in Mahara. We use this to save
filesystem space when you copy a page.

The only problem is, whose file quota would the file count against, in
this scenario?

We wouldn't want to count it against the original user's file quota,
because they deleted the file from their file area. And we wouldn't want
to count it against the group's file quota unless we give them the
ability to delete the file.

Bug description:
Currently if a user adds a personal image to the group description
field then leaves a group the image can still be viewed - but I think
it would be better if on leaving the group the group takes a copy of

  their personal files.

So would be a matter of checking when removing a user if they have any
files being used as embedded images and then copying the files and
updating the url to point to new one.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1429325] Re: Allow public pages for staff and admins only

2015-03-08 Thread Aaron Wells
I think we could achieve this without implementing a fully granular
Moodle-style permissions system (and all the performance hits that come
with that).

The implementation would look like this:

1. We change the setting allow public pages from a tickbox to a menu
labeled who can create public pages, options anyone, admins +
staff, admins, no one. (Maybe some variant in there for
institutional admins staff as well)

2. We do a similar thing to the existing institution-level allow public
views setting. The current version of that setting allows public views
if the user belongs to *any* institution that allows public views, so we
would use similar any logic for the new version of the setting.

3. We add a tickbox for can create public pages to the user settings
page, accessible only to admins (much like the user settings option for
setting a user's auth instance). This setting would allow the user to
create public pages regardless of any other site or institutional
settings (or the spam probation system).

4. We write a function, can_create_public_pages() that checks all of
these things in the proper order.

Title:
Allow public pages for staff and admins only

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When you use Mahara with a range of different age groups, you may
prevent certain ages from creating public pages so that they don't
share their pages accidentally with the public, e.g. young children
who don't look at the sharing options carefully.

I propose we be more granular in who can create public pages and public
profiles on the institution level:
  - everyone
  - staff and admins only

Ideally, an admin could overwrite the setting for individual trusted
regular users as well so that they don't need to be given the staff
role as that comes with more privileges.

And now it's looking more and more like being able to create other
roles and be able to manage permissions more like Moodle manages
  capabilities...

Curently, roles are hard-coded in Mahara and thus that would need to
  change first.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1363742] Re: Submit a group page to a group

2015-03-08 Thread Aaron Wells
Oh, and here's an idea. In addition to displaying the name of the page's
group as the author, we'd also display the name of the individual user
who actually clicked the submit button.

That would help cut down on abusability, by making it impossible to
anonymously submit someone else's page just to mess with them.

Submit a group page to a group

Students work in groups of 3 and want to be able to submit pages /
collections to a group for assessment without having to copy the page
into one of the users' accounts and then submitting that.

I think there are two things to consider:

  1. Submit a group page / collection to the group in which it was created,
e.g. when the instructor is tutor / admin in each student group.
  2. Submit a group page / collection to a different group. That way, student
groups would have their own space and their work could not be changed by other
students who are in the same group.

  Any other things to consider?

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1429505] Re: Page stays on watchlist after you lose access

2015-03-08 Thread Aaron Wells
A couple more options:

4. Same as #1 (remove the page from the watchlist when you lose access
to it), but we also send the watcher a notification message that says
Page X on your watchlist, has been deleted or is no longer visible to
you.

5. We retain the record for the page on their watchlist, but we simply
hide the page from displaying on the watchlist block, and we don't send
them any notifications about it. This solution has the advantage that,
if the page becomes accessible to them again, it re-appears on their
watchlist.

6. The same as #5, but with notifications to say Page X you were
watching has been deleted or is no longer visible to you when the page
goes away, and another notification to say, Page X you were watching
and which you lost access to, is now visible to you again.

I think I favor option #5 (just make the inaccessible watched page
invisible), but... for technical reasons it might be tricky to implement
it along with paginating the watchlist block. We'd have to incorporate
the access control calculations into the paginated SQL!

I also think that we should implement option #3 at some point.

Page stays on watchlist after you lose access

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
When a user removes access to a page that is on your watchlist, you
don't have the possibility to take it off the watchlist anymore. There
are two possibilities that I can see:

  1. Remove a page from the watchlist automatically when you lose access
to it. This is not ideal because the watchlist owner doesn't know
directly why the page was removed.

  2. Grey out the link to the page (remove the link) to which you
don't have access anymore and allow the watchlist owner to remove it
entirely. This would require though that a delete button is placed
into the block which we currently don't have.

  3. Create a proper watchlist management screen where you can edit
pages on the watchlist, i.e. remove them or even sort them.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1429647] [NEW] Watchlist lets you watch and receive notifications about pages you don't have view access to

2015-03-08 Thread Aaron Wells
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Private security bug reported:

In analyzing watchlist bug 1429505 (pages stay on your watchlist even if
you lose access to them) I noticed a couple of things in the code:

1. You apparently still can receive watchlist notifications about pages
on your watchlist which you don't have access to.

2. There are no access control checks in togglewatchlist.json.php, so it
is apparently possible to add a page to your watchlist even if you don't
have access to it.

Together, these bugs mean that a user could watch private pages, and
receive notifications about changes to those pages. While these
notifications would not contain the actual page content, they would
contain the title of the page and the names of blocks and/or artefacts
changed in the page.

pages on your watchlist which you don't have access to.

  2. There are no access control checks in togglewatchlist.json.php, so
it is apparently possible to add a page to your watchlist even if you
  don't have access to it.

Together, these bugs mean that a user could watch private pages, and
receive notifications about changes to those pages. While these
notifications would not contain the actual page content, they would
contain the title of the page and the names of blocks and/or artefacts
  changed in the page.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1429325] Re: Allow public pages for staff and admins only

2015-03-08 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Sounds good to me. For the drop-down menu we can use the same language already
used for the Create groups option:
- Administrators only
- Administrators and staff only
- Everyone

I wouldn't distinguish between institution and site staff on the site
level, but leave that up to the institutions.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1429518] Re: Group homepage doesn't display all blocks anymore

2015-03-08 Thread Aaron Wells
On the downside, the Group Pages block is potentially a long-running
block, because it has to do access control checks. Although I suppose it
probably gets a speed boost because it limits the search to only pages
that are owned by this one specific group.

If we encounter Groups that have a slow Group Homepage load time because
of the Group Pages block, then we'll want to considering revisiting this
and figuring out a way to Ajaxify the Group Pages block. Maybe one way
to do that... would be to make hide_title_on_empty_content() check
whether the user is a member of the group, and return false if so?
Because if you're a group member, you'll always be able to see the Group
Homepage, which means the content won't be empty.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1429681] [NEW] Not all translation strings are shown in email

2015-03-08 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Public bug reported:

Yulia pointed out that a few strings that a user sees in an email
notification aren't translated when a user has a different language set.

For example: Please do not reply to this message. (at the bottom of a
forum notification) is displayed in English even though the user has set
the language to a different one and the string is translated itself.

She said: strings like 'divertingemailto' and
'pleasedonotreplytothismessage' are attached in email_user() and it
doesn't find out the recipient's lang and takes strings from that lang
pack. Other strings in the notification are passed through differently.

** Affects: mahara
 Importance: Low
 Status: Confirmed

Title:
New Behat step: And I expand text node

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  Hi,

Could you please implement a step that says: And I expand text node.
  Moodle already uses this step.

I would be useful when you follow Portfolio - Create page - Edit content
and then expanding the Media, Journals. General, Personal information and
External tabs/nodes.

I have attached a piece of a test below that you can use to test the code
change with.

  Thanks,
  Jinelle

HTML export to use new path to plugin templates (Bug #1417319)

- also updated the location of the file/folder icons so that one can
test/verify this patch.

Note: this patch doesn't fix all the problems of html export but does
fix the regression of where the html export would never complete

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1429518] Re: Group homepage doesn't display all blocks anymore

2015-03-08 Thread Aaron Wells
Right, so it turns out the problem only affects blocks that use the
hide_title_on_empty_content() method, which, in core, is only the
Group Pages Group Members blocks.

I've submitted a patch to solve the problem by not ajaxifying blocks
that are using hide_title_on_empty_content().
