[Mailman-Users] Personalisation

2003-12-01 Thread Christian Schoepplein
Hi!

What do I have to set in mm_cfg-py to enable personalisation by default
for new lists (not full personalisation). In listconfigs i saw, that

personalize = 1

would be the thing to set, but is it possible to use this setting in
mm_cfg.py?

Thanks!

[Mailman-Users] admin fuction discard not working.

2003-12-01 Thread Chris Johnson
 Hi,

 running Mailman v 2.1-8 here on rh7.3 w/ python 1.5.2-43.73.

Simply, the Discard function on the list admin page isn't
working. As I understand the process, I click on Discard and th
Submit all and it's supoosed to dump the message or messages. Ain't
happenin'. Message is still being held and won't go away. Would very
much like to get ride of this message so the now annoying alert
notices that tell mail daily there is a held message in the queue is
still there would stop.

 Help appreciated. Tnx.

[Mailman-Users] archives url problem

2003-12-01 Thread Lányi Róbert
Hi!

I've successfully installed Mailman-2.1.3 for the first time, everything
works fine, only one thing doesn't: when I try to get my list's private
archives, after entering email address and password, the links (thread,
subject etc.) are pointing to invalid addresses: the list's name parts are
missing.

For example, instead of the correct url
(http://some-host/mailman/private/listname/2003-November.txt) an incorrect
one is shown (http://some-host/mailman/private/2003-November.txt).

Please help me solving this problem
Thx

[Mailman-Users] Mailman wont send mail

2003-12-01 Thread Zimmermann Christian
Hello to all,

I´m new to this list.

I have a problem with mailman and postfix.
I set up mailman out of the box on my suse 8.2 system.
I have made the changes in my httpd.conf and createt a new list called gfn-nasen.
The needed entries In my /etc/aliases are also there- I think so.

gfn-nasen: "|/usr/lib/mailman/mail/mailman post gfn-nasen"
gfn-nasen-admin: "|/usr/lib/mailman/mail/mailman admin gfn-nasen"

[Mailman-Users] Umbrella Lists

2003-12-01 Thread Mike Hogsett

I am currently installing Mailman as a replacement for majordomo. Mostly
everything is going smoothly.

I have a question regarding umbrella lists. I have 4 "real" mailing lists
and 5 aliases that redirect to some or all of these lists.

For the sake of explanation let's call the "real" lists :
A-staff
A-vis
B-staff
B-vis

The 5 aliases are (and send to -> )
all   -> A-staff, B-staff, A-vis, B-vis
all-staff -> A-staff, B-staff
all-vis   -> A-vis, B-vis
A-all -> A-staff, A-vis
B-all -> B-staff, B-vis

The 4 "real" lists are all moderated due to increasing spam and forged
addresses.

The problem: If a message goes to one of the aliases then the message must
be moderated at-least twice or at worst four times. I would like to
moderate a message once.

What solutions are available? Are there solutions entirely within the
scope of Mailman?

I have instrumented a solution using umbrella lists (for the aliases) and
some clever procmail rules, but would like to know what others have done
in similar situations.

Thanks,

Michael Hogsett

If it requires "new" subscribers to be moderated and not existing
subscribers then perhaps :

http://SERVER/mailman/admin/LISTNAME/privacy/sender

"By default, should new list member postings be moderated?"

is set to "Yes"

If all subscribers have to be moderated then perhaps :

http://SERVER/mailman/admin/LISTNAME/general

"Emergency moderation of all list traffic."

Is set to "Yes"

Good luck,

[Mailman-Users] Upgrading lists 2.0.X -> 2.1.X

2003-12-01 Thread Morgan Fletcher
Do I need to update the data under $prefix/lists/ when upgrading from 2.0.X
to 2.1.X? If so, how? I don't see any mention of it in the 2.1.3 INSTALL or
UPGRADING document, but when I try the upgrade with 2.0.8-era lists/ data,
I get errors about missing properties. (fields?)

[Mailman-Users] Mailman Preprocessor Available - seeking feedback

2003-12-01 Thread darwin
Hello,
Below is the description of a preprocessor script I wrote for mailman. I
was looking to emulate the Topica.com features of "-subscribe",
"-unsubscribe" and "-post-" in an efficient and
extensible manner.

I am seeking feedback on the script and I have two areas that are troubling
right now:
*) I still get a succesful completion AND an error message back from mailman
when sending to "-unsubscribe" (yet I don't get one when sending to
"-unsubscribe" which *should* process exactly the same way. I know I
coiuld re-write the entire message - but I am wondering if there is a way to
make unsubscribe work the same way as subscribe and post - by doing
replacements to the inbound message.
*) I am wondering if there is a way to alter all the messages sent out by
mailman to match my configuration. There are some in "Templates" - but
others seem hardcoded. Right now I am tied to Mailman 2.0.13 due to needing
to stay compliant with the RedHat 2.1AS distribution.

The script can be found at http://desktopengineer.com/mmpreproc

Thanks for any time anyone can take to send feedback,
D.

# This script pre-processes mail commands to mailman to faciliate
announcement lists and easy subscribe and unsubscribe.
# It modifies the list behavior as follows:
# *) unsubscribes only made through the alias [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and automatically sets users password to their email
# *) unsubscribes only made through the alias
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and automatically unsubscribes with no
confirm, email=password is assumed
# *) posting to the list can only be done through a special alias that
includes a password component such as -post-@domain.com.
# The list can be configured for moderation and only allow a specific
list of emails to be automatically approved. Since it is recommended
# that you delete the @domain.com alias, using this method
prevents the need to moderate messages that try to use the standard posting
# alias - even if you do not allow auto approval of posts to specific
email addresses.
# *) This script accomplishes its objectives by having the mail message
piped to it and then it pipes the message into the standard mailman wrapper
for
# processing. This is more efficient than re-mailing back to the same
system. In addition, since the program simply does regex substitutions to
# inbound message headers, the posting password alias can work easily
with complex messages that include mime sections because the entire message
does not
# need to pass through mail again and therefore be disassembled,
reassembled and then emailed correctly.
# *) Many other modifications could be made for preprocessing mailman
commands and posts - the script design is modular and dynamic - it pulls
apart the
# mail aliases components (seperate by "-" character) and decides what
to do with the message based on these components.

# Install
# *) Tested with mailman 2.0.13 (Redhat 2.1AS Version)
# *) Ensure you have Mail:Mailer (mailtools) installed if you wish to have
error notification or debug emails sent, or rewrite the email section
# to suite your system.
# *) Copy mmprepoc.pl to /mail (e.g. "cp mmpreproc.pl
/path/to/mailman/mail")
# *) Change ownership to the mailman user (e.g. "chown mailman
mmpreproc.pl")
# *) Change security to be executable (e.g. "chmod 755 mmpreproc.pl")
# *) For sendmail create a link in the /etc/smrsh directory (e.g. "ln -s
/path/to/mailman/mail/mmpreproc.pl")
# *) Set $mailmanpath - this should be the directory with all your mailman
subdirectories (including "bin") in it.
# *) Set $blockrequests - if set to "1" this script blocks all
[EMAIL PROTECTED] messages except replys to
# subscription confirmations.
# *) Set $emaildiscards, $emailerrors, $emaildebug and $emailnotifyaddress
if you wish to use email notification.

# Configure Mailman (note your lists cannot have a "-" character in their
name):
# *) add the list alias -subscribe:
"|/path/to/mailman/mail/mmpreproc.pl"
# *) add the list alias -unsubscribe:
"|/path/to/mailman/mail/mmpreproc.pl"

# Configure Mailman: If using the post-password alias feature
# *) add the list alias -post-:
"|/path/to/mailman/mail/subprocessor"
# *) remove the list alias or send it to null so that you don't
have to moderate messages sent there.
# *) in mail man set posting to the list to be only allowed from members
of the list and setup any auto-approval email
# addresses. It won't matter that users can see your auto approved
email when receiving messages because they cannot
# tell that you used a special alias to send the message rather than
@domain.com

I don't know that this would work. Looking at Mailman/MailList.py, it
looks like personalize is always initialized to 0.

This probably isn't the right way to handle it, but just for fun I
changed MailList.py and added a DEFAULT_LIST_PERSONALIZATION variable
to mm_cfg.py. If both that and OWNERS_CAN_ENABLE_PERSONALIZATION are
non-zero, then personalize picks up that value. Otherwise, it gets
set to 0.

Here's the small patch I made to Mailman/MailList.py:

[Mailman-Users] MAILMAN + OUTLOOK

Hi ALL,

Some users in my company had their outlook configurated for break messages greater
than 100k (for example).

When someone send a 200K message, the outlook divide it in 2 parts, deliver to
mailman and the mailman deliver 2 messages to the mailman users and the Outlook of
this users doesn´t join the messages in 1.

But when I send this same 200k message to a single person the outlook join the 2
parts.

It´s happening because the READERS that the mailman put in the messages???

Hi,

Firstly, my apology to the list that I posted the question before going through FAQ
thoroughly.

Since the version of my Mailman is 2.1.4, I have followed "How to do it in Mailman
2.1" section of the FAQ. In this section, I could not understand the last para of this
section. Can some one in the list give me some pointers on this?

Thanks,

Sort of a tangent, but if you're using postfix, you can automate the
alias handling. Check out README.POSTFIX included with mailman for
details. And check the FAQ and list archives for some common issues
people have getting this to work.

If you're using mailman >= 2.1, you probably don't have the mailman
service started. If you're using 2.0, then you might not have the
mailman cron entries installed. Check the docs included with your
install to see if there are post install steps your distribution
requires you to take.

[Mailman-Users] Downgrade/migration problem

2003-12-01 Thread Stephen Gran
Hello all,

I am having a little bit of a hard time with what is essentially a
downgrade. Some background: the company I work for recently took over
the backend sysadmin work for an ISP that runs about 50 mailman lists on
one of their servers. After some looking around and getting accustomed
to things in their set-up, we noticed a lot of exim and mailman errors.
It turned out there was a very strange set-up, based loosely around
mailman 2.1b2+ and exim 4.0x, but with lots of bits still left from
older versions. There were exim cron jobs calling exim v.3 binaries,
cronjobs calling other mailman paths, so on. A total mess of
misinstallation, and unlikely to be sorted out any time soon.

So, we decided that the easiest path might be to migrate the whole thing
over to another box, running Debian Woody. This has exim 3.35 and
mailman 2.0.11, so it is in effect a downgrade for both. The transition
was made with a combination of rsync'ing the various directories under
mailman/ and some scripts to dump the config's and memberships on the
old machine and import them on the new machine (not for all the lists,
though - only those that didn't have config.db, but only a config.pck -
that is, only the lists added since the last admin upgraded mailman).
We expected some problems, but most were resolvable. I'm stumped over
this last one, and I'm hoping somebody might be able to shed some light
on it.

Mail coming in to the lists and going out to users works just fine.
Mail going to admins is accepted by exim, and passed to mailman, but
mailman never delivers list-admin mail. I see this in logs/error:

Dec 01 21:38:06 2003 (15951) Delivery exception: bad marshal data
Dec 01 21:38:06 2003 (15951) Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Handlers/HandlerAPI.py", line 82, in do_pipeline
func(mlist, msg, msgdata)
File "/usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Handlers/Hold.py", line 152, in process
hold_for_approval(mlist, msg, msgdata, NonMemberPost)
  File "/usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Handlers/Hold.py", line 218, in hold_for_approval
mlist.HoldMessage(msg, reason, msgdata)
File "/usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/ListAdmin.py", line 145, in HoldMessage
self.__opendb()
File "/usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/ListAdmin.py", line 69, in __opendb
self.__db = marshal.load(fp)
ValueError: bad marshal data

I'm guessing that something is wrong with the data in a config.db, but I
see no way to tell which one, or what's the matter with it. config_list
and dumpdb don't show any error messages, so it seems that it can read
the various files. I have no idea how to proceed further, so if anyone
has any ideas, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Re: [Mailman-Users] Can I prevent all members, except list manager, from sending mail to the list??

2003-12-01 Thread Jim McCarty
Damar,

What that part of the FAQ is referring to is under the Membership
Management portion of the list administration page. Clicking on that
link should bring you to a page with a table of all of your subscribers
whose addresses start with an 'a'. At the bottom of the page is an
option to "Set everyone's moderation bit, including those members not
currently visible" - select 'On' and then click the 'Set' button, then
find your address and turn the mod bit Off.

Hope this helps,

jim
