Re: [mailop] Spamhaus and Vultr

2024-05-12 Thread Lyle Giese via mailop
Based on reading Spamhaus's page(referenced below), they will slowly
block ALL Vultr ip address space from using the Spamhaus public
mirrors.  Doesn't matter what the reverse IP address is.

But signing up for Spamhaus DQS free service, you merely change your
configuration after getting a free DQS key from Spamhaus.

If you are querying their zen database, you have configured queries to
use 'zen.spamhaus.org'. You change that to
'your_DQS_key.zen.dq.spamhaus.net'

Hi mailop,

I noticed that Spamhaus has posted a notice that after May 22nd,
people and/or businesses making use of Vultr for their infrastructure
will need to transition to a different way of querying the
blocklists[1].  The post mentions that Vultr’s default reverse IP
assignment masks who is querying the blocklists.

In my scenario, I have my own recursive, validating resolver running
on my mail server on a Vultr instance and it has a reverse DNS name
that is not the default one that Vultr assigns and I query:
zen.spamhaus.org.

Do I still need to make changes ?

I am uncertain from the blog posting if this refers to people making
use of the resolver that Vultr provides or if it extends to all of
Vultr’s IP space (ie. all cloud instances).

Thanks,

- J

Re: [mailop] Microsoft 365 IP addresses listed on Spamcop

2024-02-15 Thread Lyle Giese via mailop
The suggestion to bug Microsoft are correct, I would also bug the
support team at the receiving end of this.

From the SpamCop.net website:

The SCBL aims to stop most spam while not blocking wanted email. This is
a difficult task. It is not possible for any blocking tool to avoid
blocking wanted mail entirely. Given the power of the SCBL, SpamCop
encourages use of the SCBL in concert with an actively maintained allow
list of wanted email senders. SpamCop encourages SCBL users to tag and
divert email, rather than block it outright. Most SCBL users consider
the amount of unwanted email successfully filtered to make the risks and
additional efforts worthwhile.

The SCBL is aggressive and often errs on the side of blocking mail. When
implementing the SCBL, provide users with the information about how the
SCBL and your mail system filter their email. Ideally, they should have
a choice of filtering options. Many mailservers operate with blocking
lists in a "tag only" mode, which is preferable in many situations.

SpamCop admits to being aggressive and sometimes errors on the side of
blocking mail.  Based on SpamCop's policies, I would suggest that the
receiving side of this equation should use the SpamCop listing as part
of a spam scoring system rather than use SpamCop as a blocking RBL.

There are multiple ways to define multiple ip addresses in SPF. But you

outgoing ip addresses and I would bet you that they already know what
you should put in your SPF record.

I know I can add at least one more ip4 address using the same format but I am
not sure exactly what the Ionos email ip range might be so:

- Is there a way of saying eg. ip4:72.20.8.*

- Or should I delete the ip4 component and instead add:

include:mydomain.tld (corrected of course)

Suggestions appreciated!

Re: [mailop] [E] AT&T sending messages to spam

2020-12-04 Thread Lyle Giese via mailop
AT&T outsourced their customer email services to Yahoo after Ameritech
had outsourced their email to prodigy(many years ago and why you see the
mx records pointing to prodigy.net).  Yahoo was purchased by what is now
Verizon Media.  There is an active project ongoing to move email off to
AT&T.  But it's been a multi-year project.  I know, I work as an IT
consultant and here in the Chicago area, there are many of my customers
still using ameritech.net email accounts.  Bellsouth.net is in the same
shape.  Moved to Yahoo and now being moved to AT&T owned services.

When customers are moved off of Yahoo to AT&T, suddenly their Outlook
doesn't work.  AT&T is using OAuth and if you have an old version of
Outlook(2016 is considered old and doesn't support OAuth), you have to
get a secure mail key to use instead of your normal password to access
your email via Outlook.

Don't know if ATT looks at this but I know they used to.  The TTL for

For what it's worth - the IP address in this particular case

clean at all of those places - but I guess those aren't good sources

I'm open to suggestions on how I'm suppose to handle this and what I
