Here's my €.02. The context for this is

http://mainsleaze.spambouncer.org/may-2021-in-spamtraps-esps/

(and similar posts on same site before, as well as my LinkedIn posts on
the same topic later)

Here's a data point to the current conversation.

[atossava@x ~]$ for i in 202?-??_ESP-blog/202*_esp_sendgrid*; do
nextdoor=`fgrep -c .nextdoor.com $i`; total=`wc -l < $i`; month=`echo $i | cut
-f1 -d_`; echo $month: `expr 1000 \* $nextdoor / $total` ‰ ; done

Output:

2021-01: 7 ‰
2021-02: 7 ‰
2021-03: 7 ‰
2021-04: 7 ‰

2021-11: 11 ‰
2021-12: 13 ‰
2022-01: 17 ‰
2022-02: 33 ‰
2022-03: 32 ‰
2022-04: 32 ‰
2022-05: 31 ‰
2022-06: 29 ‰
2022-07: 34 ‰
2022-08: 46 ‰
2022-09: 43 ‰
2022-10: 36 ‰
2022-11: 32 ‰

Another one is that they keep adding more trap addresses to hit, and
we've had control over these for years. Opt-in it is not.

Let's assume their initial emails were compliant due to the
"established business relationship" (even though the account is
deleted, which makes it really dubious, to say the least)

But, (IMHNAL) the non-working unsubscribe link makes it a clear
violation of the act:

> (A) In general.--It is unlawful for any person to

> message was received

This is the kind of case that in other countries would result in a
straightforward case with the regulator. I'm not that familiar with the
US, though.

I guess the unsubscribe link is not working because it is trying to
store the preference in the missing account. But had they deleted the
email address along the account, they wouldn't face such problem...

because of the "established business relationship".

If you've not had any interaction in that time, there is no longer an
established business relationship.

Hello,

link at the end of their emails does nothing. If anything it seems that

emails increases.

I've been subscribed for many years and until recently Nextdoor only
emailed local neighborhood events as expected.

Starting on September 19, Nextdoor began sending at least triple the
volume of previous email, stories about items all over the country. It
took quite a bit of fiddling with settings in their web portal to tame
it back to local events only.

There was no notice or opportunity to opt-out of the non-local noise
ahead of time and the process to unsubscribe from the unwanted and
unrequested items was not obvious.

Either my efforts to unsubscribe were successful or they got the message
from others that what they were doing was a bad idea as it seems to have
reverted to local items only.

I thought that "former user" in the description of my situation was
clear enough to mean that I don't have an user account with them
anymore. However I received a few replies now suggesting to check my
notification settings in my user account. I will repeat it once more:

I don't have an user account with Nextdoor.

Activating one requires going through the snake mail verification
process. Not living in the US anymore, this is not an option. Even if it
would, I don't think that requiring this to opt out of their spam is a
sensible policy.

Anyhow, space in /dev/null is cheap. I'll archive there all their
communications for later analysis.

Cheers,
Dan

I did have the same problem with them adding me to a ton of lists I didn’t want
to be on (I’ve not lived in the US in 4 years, GTFO). Disabling notifications
followed by deleting my account worked to stop the mail. If it’s not working
for you, I might contact the privacy folks and tell them their mail system is
broken if I was feeling generous. But the blocking the email at the source may
be your only solution.

No, it is not. I just wanted to check if someone else heard of similar
behavior from them. And maybe someone at Nextdoor is listening and can
put their act together.

I don't see ANY traffic from them, but I deal with mostly business email
