MI centroidx and centroidy output as UTM coordinates

1999-09-24 Thread Rajeev saraf

I have a table of points whose projection is set
as UTM. When I update my columns with centroidx and centroidy functions, i get
the values in lat/long. Why is it like that? How do I populate my fields my UTM
values.
However, if I run SET COORDSYS command in mapbasic window and
set it to UTM, then it works fine.
any explanations

You could try NConvert which comes with Xnview. It's not
referenced in the GUI, but if you look in the Xnview directory it's
there. Type nconvert.exe -help for a list of supported file types.

Homepage: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/pierre.g
Download: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/pierre.g/html/download.html

The pages are in French, but don't let that scare you off (not you
Claude, the list :). The url for the English version is:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/pierre.g/download/viewer/Xnview-gb-win.zip
(see the downloads page for mirrors)

cheers,

oh yeah, it's freeware and available on just about any platform you

MI What is Oracle Spatial?

1999-09-24 Thread Neil Havermale

What is Oracle Spatial?

The product provides an integrated set of functions and procedures that
enable spatial data to be stored, accessed, and analyzed quickly and
efficiently in Oracle8i. This means that spatial and attribute data can
now be managed in one physical database, thereby reducing processing
overhead and eliminating the complexity of coordinating and
synchronizing disparate sets of data. "By using Oracle8i extensible
indexing features, Oracle Spatial exceeds the performance of previous
releases."

Oracle Spatial provides a completely open architecture for the
management of spatial data within a database management system. The
functionality provided by Oracle Spatial is completely integrated
within the database server. Users define and manipulate spatial data
through SQL and gain access to standard Oracle features such as a
flexible n-tier architecture, object capabilities, robust data
management utilities, and Java stored procedures. This ensures data
integrity, recovery, and security features that are virtually impossible
to obtain with other architectures. In addition, a new geocoding
framework facilitates address matching, storage, and retrieval of
geocoded spatial point data, as well as within-distance query
capability, from within Oracle8i databases.

With the release of Oracle8i, spatial data can be stored in relational
tables or as objects -- abstract data types (ADTs). This new object data
type (SDO_GEOMETRY) is supported directly by core Oracle8i engine. The
use of the object relational type enables spatial data to be stored,
accessed, and analyzed quickly and efficiently in an Oracle8i database.
This gives application developers the facility to store all locational
(geographically referenced) information within an industry standard
database server without having to resort to custom-built external
indexes and functions to get the performance they need. Users of spatial
data have access to standard Oracle8i features, plus enhanced features
such as bigger database size limits, faster backup and recovery, and
Java in the database.

In Spring 1999, Oracle Spatial (ver. 8.0 and 8i) became the first
software company to pass OpenGIS conformance testing for "Simple
Features for SQL". Oracle's commitment to standards activities is
demonstrated by its active principal-level membership in the Open GIS
Consortium (OGC) during the past three years.

License Oracle 8i Personal Edition for $395 and get essentially all
features of "Spatial Cartridge", the replacement technology for SDO,
plus a JAVA database.

http://www.oracle.com/database/options/spatial/index.html

Do we really need SDE anymore?

I believe the most recent issue of GeoInfoSystems Sept 1999 - "Framework
Data Survey Preliminary" on page 26 / Fig 13 you'll find a "map" for
Spatial Distribution of Popular GIS Systems Nationwide - County

but you as I are likely to be surprised at how well MapInfo appears to be
doing. This a very interesting report and you should attempt to get a copy

MI - offset printing a layout

1999-09-24 Thread Spriggs, Jim

Dear Listers,

We are going to print several thousand copies of a 38x50 inch map created
with MapInfo.
I would greatly appreciate any information on preparing the layout for
offset printing. Something that
allows the printer to create the magenta, yellow, cyan and black
separations.

It looks like the combination of MAPublisher and Adobe Illustrator might do
the job. I don't have either product,
but if it will work, it would be worth getting. If someone has used these
for a similar situation,
your input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

MI Workspace Questions

Dear Mapinfo Listers:

(1) Has anyone opened a workspace under Map Basic control? That is,
without using the common dialog.

We are working with Mapinfo Pro 5.0 (desktop) and Access '97 and are trying

MI SDEBasic

The other day I believe we saw an offer over this list (Oh those darned

write basis. I saw this info on SDEBasic go by this AM and was
wondering if would be useful? It might be cheaper that SDE and
Spatialware. I am not certain it will be lower cost than say 8i

eh?

Will keep an eye on this to see where the most recent SDE-B version is.

MI Table structure

1999-09-24 Thread Miguel Iturralde

Hello everyone,

I have some attributes tables with the records in this
fashion:

Poly_id    Code
Definition    Value
1   xyz
xyz        xyz
1   xyz
xyz
xyz
2   xyz
xyz            xyz
2   xyz

xyzxyz
3
3
and so forth...

How can I put all the the records pertaining to the same
polygon in just one row; for example:

Poly_id    Code1
Definition1    Value1    Code2
Definition2     Value2
1
2
3
etc.

The tables contain five records for each polygon, so it would
be time consuming selecting individually and joining in a new table.  Will
appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks in advance, and a good weekend to all.

MI Geocode Problem

1999-09-24 Thread branagan

I've been geocoding along with my MI for the Mac, when all of a sudden,
it just won't geocode or create points anymore. (I'm sure its operator
error.) While I have only 139 points and have to redo it, has anyone
seen anything like this before. I've run Norton Utilities, Norton
AntiVirus, no problems. Lots of RAM and HD space. I've exported the
data through FileMaker Pro, MS Excel and MS Word (and reimported into MI
under a different .dbf file name) to see if any little thingies may have
crept inside, but no apparent problems. All suggestions welcome. Thanks

RE: MI MapInfo & MrSID

1999-09-24 Thread Tony

MrSID creates a 24 bit image. When MI prints a raster it is "reduced" to an
8 bit image. MI management is aware of this problem.

Re: MI Friday Humour / unsubscribing

Actually, I prefer System C.

Set the Unsubscribing Kit in front of your computer. Find the ring labeled,
"Pull to Unsubscribe". The actuation lever will fly off the small pineapple
shaped kit with a loud "PING".

In three seconds you will be unsubscribed.

Re: MI: What is MI's market share in the US and abroad?

1999-09-24 Thread Chris Martin

I know its a bit parochial, but In UK Local Government Circles, the
desktop mapping breakdown around last year was:

MapInfo 21%
ArcView (ESRI) 19%
Someone else 12%
...and then the rest...

I'm sure MI will give you some figures, but regardless, I suggest
that if ESRI are claiming 90% of most markets then they are
talking out of their pants.

However, I do have information to suggest that ESRI have around 90%
of the ArcInfo market...but I can't confirm this...!

Hello everyone,

If anyone wants a copy of a new freeware
application called Table Info v1.0 (i know, not very original but it's
late at night here!) it's available for download from our web site. This
application allows you to obtain information about tables opened within MapInfo.
It displays detailed table information, table structure, and metadata records.
The application also allows you to print and print preview the table structure
information.

You can download a copy from www.4thbeachsoftware.com

MI Friday Humor

1999-09-24 Thread John Haynes

Some old ones, but some I hadn't seen
before

Take heart, anyone among you who believes you
are  technologicallychallenged, you "ain't seen nuthin'" yet.
This is an excerpt from a WallStreet Journal article:1.  Compaq
is considering changing the command "Press Any Key" to "PressReturn Key"
because of the flood of calls asking where the "Any" key is.2.  AST
technical support had a caller complaining that her mouse washard to control
with the dust cover on.  The cover turned out to be the plasticbag the
mouse was packaged in.3.  Another AST customer was asked to send a
copy of her defectivediskettes.  A few days later a letter arrived from
the customer along withphotocopies of the floppies.4.  A Dell
technician advised his customer to put his troubled floppyback in the drive
and close the door.  The customer asked the tech to hold onand was
heard putting the phone down,  getting up and crossing the room toclose
the door to his room.5.  Another Dell customer called to say he
couldn't get his computer tofax anything.  After 40 minutes of
trouble-shooting, the techniciandiscovered the man was trying to fax a piece
of paper by holding it infront of  the monitor screen and hitting the
"send" key.6.  Yet another Dell customer called to complain that
his keyboard nolonger worked.  He had cleaned it by filling up his tub
with soap and waterand soaking the keyboard for a day, then removing all the
keys and washingthem individually.7.  A Dell technician
received a call from a customer who was enragedbecause his computer had told
him he was "bad and an invalid."  The techexplained that the computer's
"bad command" and "invalid" responsesshouldn't be taken
personally.8.  A confused caller to IBM was having troubles
printing documents.  Hetold the technician that the computer had said
it "couldn't find printer."The user had also tried turning the computer
screen to face the printer-butthat his computer still couldn't "see" the
printer.9.  An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support
couldn't get hernew Dell Computer to turn on.  After ensuring the
computer was plugged in,the technician asked her what happened when she
pushed the power button. Her response, "I pushed and pushed on this foot
pedal and  nothing happens."The "foot pedal" turned out to be the
computer's mouse.10. Another customer called Compaq tech support to say
her brand-newcomputer wouldn't work.  She said she unpacked the unit,
plugged it in andsat there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen.
When asked whathappened when she pressed the power switch, she asked, "What
power switch?"11. Another IBM customer had troubles installing software
and rang forsupport.  "I put in the first disk, and that was OK.
It said to put in thesecond disk, and had some problems with the disk When
it said to put in thethird disk, I couldn't even fit it in..."  The
user hadn't realized that"Insert Disk 2" meant to remove Disk 1
first.12. In a similar incident, a customer had followed the
instructions forinstalling software. The instructions said to remove the
disk from itscover and insert into the drive.  The user had physically
removed the casing ofthe disk and wondered why there were
problems.13. True story from a Novell NetWire SysOp:Caller:
"Hello, is this Tech Support?"Tech:  "Yes, it is.  How may I help
you?"  Caller:  "The cup holder on my PC is broken and I am within
my warranty  period.  How do I go about getting that fixed?"
Tech:  "I'm  sorry, but did you say a cup holder?"
Caller:  "Yes, it's attached to the front  of my
computer."  Tech:  "Please excuse me. If I seem a bit stumped,
it's because I am.  Did you receive this as part of a promotional at a
trade show? How did you get  this cup holder?  Does it have
any  trademark on it?"Caller:  "It came with my computer.  I
don't know anything about apromotional.  It just has '4X' on
it."  At this point, the Tech Rep had to mute the caller because
hecouldn't stand it. He was laughing too hard.  The caller had been
using the loaddrawer of the CD-ROM drive as a cup holder and snapped it off
the drive.14. A woman called the Canon help desk with a problem with
herprinter. The tech asked her if she was running it under "Windows." The
womanresponded, "No, my desk is next to the door. But that is a good
point.  Theman sitting in the  cubicle next to me is under a
window and his printer isworking fine."15. TECH SUPPORT: "O.K. Bob,
let's press the control and escape keysat the same time. That brings up a
task list in the middle of the screen. Nowtype the letter "P" to bring up
the Program Manager."   CUSTOMER: "I don't have a
'P'".   TECH SUPPORT: "On your keyboard, Bob."
CUSTOMER: "What do you mean?"   TECH SUPPORT: "'P' on your
keyboard, Bob."   CUSTOMER: "I'm not going to do
that!"

MI Zoom to all of four layers

1999-09-24 Thread Elliot Tinton EG CEFAS

Hello list,

I am trying to create a MapBasic application that converts text files to points and
automatically displays different point files on a map. This works fine but I would
like the final display to be automatically set so that it zooms in on the smallest
area possible that contains four different layers of points. I can use zoom entire
layer to zoom to one layer of points or I can write in a certain zoom scale but this
changes depending on where the points are generated. Neither of these are quite what
I want. How can I zoom to entire of four layers ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Elliot.

Does anyone have experience working with MrSID images within MapInfo? I've
compress some color (RGB/8 bit) TIF images and made prints using the MrSID
Viewer and from within MapInfo 5.5. The print from the Viewer is acceptable
when comparing an original print but the MapInfo print is not. The MapInfo
print has larger pixels which creates a TV like "snow" affect. I've
increased the block size to 1024 of the MrSID file but that didn't help.

Any help or advice to fix or resolve this difference is appreciated. Thanks

MI Friday Humour / unsubscribing

1999-09-24 Thread Joshua Ostroff

How many times have we seen some nitwit write to an entire email list:

>UNSUBSCRIBE ME PLEASE ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

even though each post to the list has clear unsub instructions! Well, this
is what they should be doing (with acknowledgements to the unknown author)

--
 Here's how to unsubscribe:

First, ask your Internet Provider to mail you an Unsubscribing Kit.
 Then follow these directions.

The kit will most likely be the standard no-fault type. Depending on
requirements, System A and/or System B can be used. When operating
System A, depress lever and a plastic dalkron unsubscriber will be
dispensed through the slot immediately underneath. When you have
fastened the adhesive lip, attach connection marked by the large "X"
outlet hose. Twist the silver- coloured ring one inch below the
connection point until you feel it lock.

The kit is now ready for use. The Cin-Eliminator is activated by the
small switch on the lip. When securing, twist the ring back to its
initial condition, so that the two orange lines meet. Disconnect.
Place the dalkron unsubscriber in the vacuum receptacle to the rear.
Activate by pressing the blue button.

The controls for System B are located on the opposite side. The red
release switch places the Cin-Eliminator into position; it can be
adjusted manually up or down by pressing the blue manual release
button. The opening is self- adjusting. To secure after use, press the
green button, which simultaneously activates the evaporator and
returns the Cin-Eliminator to its storage position.

You may log off if the green exit light is on over the evaporator . If
the red light is illuminated, one of the Cin-Eliminator requirements
has not been properly implemented. Press the "List Guy" call button on
the right of the evaporator . He will secure all facilities from his
 control panel.

To use the Auto-Unsub, first undress and place all your clothes in the
clothes rack. Put on the velcro slippers located in the cabinet
immediately below. Enter the shower, taking the entire kit with you.
On the control panel to your upper right upon entering you will see a
"Shower seal" button. Press to activate. A green light will then be
illuminated immediately below. On the intensity knob, select the
desired setting. Now depress the Auto-Unsub activation lever. Bathe
 normally.

The Auto-Unsub will automatically go off after three minutes unless
you activate the "Manual off" override switch by flipping it up. When
you are ready to leave, press the blue "Shower seal" release button.
The door will open and you may leave. Please remove the velcro
slippers and place them in their container.

If you prefer the ultrasonic log-off mode, press the indicated blue
button. When the twin panels open, pull forward by rings A & B. The
knob to the left, just below the blue light, has three settings, low,
medium or high. For normal use, the medium setting is suggested.

After these settings have been made, you can activate the device by
switching to the "ON" position the clearly marked red switch. If
during the unsubscribing operation, you wish to change the settings,
place the "manual off" override switch in the "OFF" position. You may
now make the change and repeat the cycle. When the green exit light
goes on, you may log off and have lunch. Please close the door behind
 you.

Re: MI MapInfo to pdf

1999-09-24 Thread Milo Simonic

I've used printing into pdf for quite some time now - and can only recommend
it. However you have to select 600 dpi as your default resolution - it looks
publication quality. Use only proper paper for your deskjet/plotter - it does
make a difference. The resulting output looks much better from Acrobat than
printing directly from MI, especially text - fonts are somewhat rounder, less
affected by "rastering" effects.

MI Friday Humor

1999-09-24 Thread Jeff James

Hello everyone. I'm relatively new to the list, so I hope I'm not recycling
a joke you've all seen. This one was one of my favorites, purported to be
an actual letter from the Smithsonian Institute... but you know how urban
legends are...

Paleoanthropology Division
Smithsonian Institute
207 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20078

Dear Sir:

Thank you for your latest submission to the Institute, labeled “211-D, layer
seven, next to the clothesline post. Hominid skull.” We have given this
specimen a careful and detailed examination, and regret to inform you that
we disagree with your theory that it represents “conclusive proof of the
presence of Early Man in Charleston County two million years ago.” Rather,
it appears that what you have found is the head of a Barbie doll, of the
variety one of our staff, who has small children, believes to be the “Malibu
Barbie”. It is evident that you have given a great deal of thought to the
analysis of this specimen, and you may be quite certain that those of us who
are familiar with your prior work in the field were loathe to come to
contradiction with your findings. However, we do feel that there are a
number of physical attributes of the specimen which might have tipped you
off to its modern origin:

1. The material is molded plastic. Ancient hominid remains are typically
fossilized bone.
2. The cranial capacity of the specimen is approximately nine cubic
centimeters, well below the threshold of even the earliest identified
proto-hominids.
3. The dentition pattern evident on the “skull” is more consistent with the
common domesticated dog than it is with the “ravenous man-eating Pliocene
clams” you speculate roamed the wetlands during that time. This latter
finding is certainly one of the most intriguing hypotheses you have
submitted in your history with this institution, but the evidence seems to
weigh rather heavily against it. Without going into too much detail, let us
say that: (a) The specimen looks like the head of a Barbie doll that a dog
has chewed on, and (b) clams don’t have teeth.

It is with feelings tinged with melancholy that we must deny your request to
have the specimen carbon dated. This is partially due to the heavy load our
lab must bear in its normal operation, and partly due to carbon dating’s
notorious inaccuracy in fossils of recent geologic record. To the best of
our knowledge, no Barbie dolls were produced prior to 1956 AD, and carbon
dating is likely to produce wildly inaccurate results. Sadly, we must also
deny your request that we approach the National Science Foundation’s
Phylogeny Department with the concept of assigning your specimen the
scientific name Australopithecus Spiff-arino. Speaking personally, I, for
one, fought tenaciously for the acceptance of your proposed taxonomy, but
was ultimately voted down because the species name you selected was
hyphenated, and didn’t really sound like it might be Latin.

However, we gladly accept your generous donation of this fascinating
specimen to the museum. While it is undoubtedly not a hominid fossil, it
is, nonetheless, yet another riveting example of the great body of work you
seem to accumulate here so effortlessly. You should know that our Director
has reserved a special shelf in his own office for the display of the
specimens you have previously submitted to the Institution, and the entire
staff speculates daily on what you will happen upon next in your digs at the
site you have discovered in your back yard. We eagerly anticipate your trip
to our nation’s capital that you proposed in your last letter, and several
of us are pressing the Director to pay for it. We are particularly
interested in hearing you expound on your theories surrounding the
“trans-positating fillifitation of ferrous ions in a structural matrix” that
makes the excellent juvenile Tyrannosaurus Rex femur you recently discovered
take on the deceptive appearance of a rusty 9mm Sears Craftsman automotive
crescent wrench.

Hi,

I've downloaded files and wish to use them in MI. The data is in

I'm not sure how to go about this. I would be grateful if someone

Re: MI UTM to Lat\Lon translator - a practical example

1999-09-24 Thread LVN

Jason,

>... but that's not ideal for routine maintenance. ...
Oh yes it is !
Please forgive my pushiness, but I simply needed to post this mail to show
that MapInfo Pro has a lot of (overlooked) potential.

What you need to do is wrap the routine up as a workspace (a macro), and
just run it once.

This example uses a text file named "somename.txt" with 3 columns (ID,
UtmEasting, UtmNorthing). E.g.:
1;521644.81;6265918.47
2;536402.8;6197048.43
3;450807.05;6179338.95
etc.

The macro (i.e. workspace, e.g. "convert.wor") :

!Workspace
!Version 400
!Charset WindowsLatin1
Register Table "somename.txt" Type "ASCII" Delimiter ";" Charset
"WindowsLatin1" Into "somename1.tab"
Open Table "somename1.tab" As SomeName1
Create Map For SomeName1 Coordsys Earth Projection 8,...other UTM
parameters...
Set Coordsys Table SomeName1
Update SomeName1 Set OBJ = CreatePoint(Col2,Col3)
Set Coordsys Earth Projection 1,0 'or whatever datum you're using
Select Col1,CentroidX(obj)"ColX", CentroidY(obj)"ColY" From SomeName1 Into
SomeSelName1
Export SomeSelName1 Into "somename1LL.txt" Type "ASCII" Charset
"WindowsLatin1" Delimiter ";"
Close Table SomeName1

And you can duplicate the set of commands to handle multiple point files
from different projections in the same WOR.

Lars Nielsen

1999-09-24 Thread "Sarah W Myers"

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 and noticed that the new
program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and
valuable resources. No mention of this phenomenon was included
in the product brochure. In addition, Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other
programs and launches during system initialization, where it monitors all
other system activity. Applications such as Pokernight
10.3, Drunken Boys Night 2.5 and Saturday Football 5.0 no longer run, crashing
the system whenever selected. I can not seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the
background while attempting to run some of my other favorite
applications. I am thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but the
un-install does not work on this program.

Can you help me, please!!!

Thanks,
Joe

Dear Joe:
This is a very common problem men complain about but is mostly due to a
primary misconception. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0
with the idea that Wife 1.0 is merely a UTILITIES & ENTERTAINMENT
program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and designed by its creator to run
everything. It is unlikely you would be able to purge Wife 1.0 and still
convert back to Girlfriend 7.0. Hidden operating files within your system
would cause Girlfriend 7.0 to emulate Wife 1.0 so nothing is gained. It is
impossible to uninstall, delete, or purge the program files from the system
once installed. You can not go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is not
designed to do this. Some have tried to install Girlfriend 8.0 or Wife 2.0 but
end up with more problems than the original system. Look in your manual under
"Warnings-Alimony/Child Support". I recommend you keep Wife 1.0 and just deal
with the situation. Having Wife 1.0 installed myself, I might also suggest you
read the entire section regarding General Partnership Faults (GPFs). You must
assume all responsibility for faults and problems that might occur, regardless
of their cause. The best course of action will be to enter the command
C:\APOLOGIZE. In any case avoid excessive use of the Esc key because
ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the operating
system will return to normal. The system will run smoothly as long as you take
the blame for all the GPFs. Wife 1.0 is a great program, but VERY high
maintenance. Consider buying additional software to improve the performance
of Wife 1.0. I
 >recommend Flowers 2.1 and Chocolates 5.0. Do not, under any circumstances,
install Secretary With Short Skirt 3.3. This is not a supported application
for Wife 1.0 and is likely to cause irreversible damage to the operating
system.

Best of luck,
Tech Support

Sarah Myers
