MI topologyy errors

1999-10-27 Thread Jose Marcos

Hello,

I am using Spatialware and Oracle, and I already have a relatively large database.
Most of the data were loaded without being checked for errors such as duplicate nodes,
twisted polygons, etc. Is there a way to clean up everything in the Oracle database
without having to interactively go through each area with MapCheck? Is there a utility
or a built-in feature in Spatialware that will detect and remove these topology errors?

What bad effects do these errors have on my data? Do they affect the accuracy of the
maps?
Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: MI Saving Map Window Sans Border

>Trying to save a map window as a jpeg w/o a border. Possible?

You can add a registry entry "ExportBorder" which controls whether
or not to include the border when exporting the contents of the window.
If the value is "0", the border will not be exported. If the value
is "1" or the registry entry does not exist, the border will be
exported. The ExportBorder registry key should be created in
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MapInfo\MapInfo\Common.

MI dot placement algorithm

1999-10-27 Thread Peter Gozdyra

Hello All,
I was interested in generating point X and Y
coordinates in a random fashion within
a polygon, which would be what the dot density
thematic function does in MI. The difference is
that I would like to be able to see the coordinates
of such random placed points for further processing.
Any ideas would be appeaciated.
I can think of one way of doing it in MB but it seems
to be a very awkward so I am not giving details here.
Thank you in advance.

The tool we use for this procedure is WORLDREG written by Tony Cooley. He
offers a freeware, limited-to-single-TIFF version at the Data Directions
website:

http://members.aol.com/MapData/wrv3.html

We use WorldReg Plus which costs a bit more but is the only tool I know of
for using raster nautical charts in the proprietary BSB format. We consider
it money well spent, and an excellent utility - recommended.

MI Erase Inside Question

1999-10-27 Thread Christy Noonan

Hi List,
I am guessing this is an easy one, but I just can 't seem to get it to
work.

In the MI help this is what it says... straight from the online help. Can
anyone shed some light on #3?
Erasing An Object Or Portion Of An Object
You can erase either closed objects (regions, ellipses, rectangles, rounded
rectangles)
or open objects (polylines, lines and arcs) using the Erase command. You
cannot use
Erase on points or text objects.
To erase an object or a portion of an object:
1. From Map > Layer Control, make the layer editable.
2. Select the object(s) to be the target for editing, and choose objects >
set target.
3. Create and select the erasing object (or use objects from the same or
another layer).
The erasing object must be closed.
4. Choose Objects > Erase.
5. At the Data Disaggregation dialog, set the field functions to be either
blank, value
or area proportion.
6. Click OK.
The target object will now be erased where the erasing object was.

Create and Select the erasing object?!?!? I only have 1 object to select
(thought that was the one I selected in #2) and then I want to erase river
boundaries within the state boundary, they are on the same layer, is that
my problem?
 I would appreciate any insight.
 Thanx in advance, Cn

AW: MI Lines out of control!

Kim,

very likely your tables are in a bounded coordinate system, which means that
you can't draw beyond the bounds of the table. You can check and set those
bounds with a tool called CoordSysBounds.MBX that ships with MapInfo5.5.

Good Luck,

MI FW: Select "offset" information

Does anyone on the list have any ideas as to how to go about this?

Subject: RE: Select "offset" information

Thank you for your information. Let me further explain what I have and maybe
it'll get a bit closer.

I have a table called "Probables" - this has lat/longs, names, location
names with some misc data. Consists of 219 records. No ID's unless it would
be a row ID.

I have another table called "Wells" - this has all the above plus other misc
data. Has an ID (API number) but would not match on anything from
"Probables". This table has approximately 29000 records.

The only "distance" reference of any sort are the lat/long columns.

On my map, I have been manually selecting "Wells" that are in the immediate
area of "Probable" - say 1320' (should be an adjustable footage) around the
probable. I save this as a new table with the name of the "Probable" that it
refers to. For the most part, the offsets would consist of more than one
record per probable.

What I'm wanting (hoping) to be able to do, is automate this procedure and
also include the name of the probable in a column for which the offsets were
"picked."

Any hope?

Thanks so much for your time and help...

Subject: Re: Select "offset" information

Rhonda,

Here's my entire note. Let me know if there are spots that need
to be clarified.
---
Associating customers with the nearest stores is do-able, but a
bit complicated. This ought to be a MapInfo built-in function,
because if you are new to MapInfo, most of the following probably
will go right past you, but it does work. I've cc'ed this to the
MapInfo-L list so maybe someone who has a bit of time could turn
this into a generic utility for new MapInfo users. And perhaps
someone can come up with a simpler approach.

Anyway, here goes:

The general object here is to create a table that has all your
customers and their distances to all the stores. You order that
file by customer ID and Distance. Then you take that table and
group by customer ID (since the shortest distance to any of the
stores was listed first, the group by clause will grab this first
record for each customer-store record. All you need from this
last file is store Id and customer Id, and then save that table
(so it will be a permanent table, because we need to use it in a
join next.) Open the table you just saved and join it to the
customer records. Now for each customer, you have the store id
for the store that is the closest to that customer.

To create the starting table with all stores and customers with
their distances, you first need to add some columns to each
table. To the Stores table, add three fields with the following
names and types: StoreLon float, StoreLat float, and Link
integer. To the Customers table, add three fields with the
following names and types: CustLon float, CustLat float, and Link
integer. Update the tables to fill in the points' coordinates
into the lat and lon fields (using the CentroidX and CentroidY
functions. In the end you should have the coordinates for the
stores in StoreLon, StoreLat, the coordinates for Customers in
CustLon and CustLat, and leave 0 in both Link fields.

Now do a cartesian join on your two tables using the Link field.
Join the tables where the link field in one matches the link in
the other. Of course these are all zero, so you'll get a table
with every customer joined to every store (which is what we
want.) In the list of fields that you select, you will also need
to create a calculated field for distance, so the full SQL select
might look like:

Select stores.StoreId, Customers.CustId,
   Distance(stores.StoreLon, stores.StoreLat,
  Customers.CustLon, Customers.CustLat, "mi") "Distance"
from stores, Customers
where stores.Link=Customers.Link
order by Customers.CustId, Distance
into JOIN

Next SQL select that table (JOIN) and group by the CustId and
create the table NEAREST, and extract only the Id numbers, like
so:

Select StoreId, CustId
from JOIN
group by CustId
order by CustId
into NEAREST

Now save this table; close the temporary version and open the one
you just saved so that now you have a permanent table named
Nearest. Join this with the Customer table like so:

Select Customers.CustId, Customers.Name, Nearest.StoreId
from Customers, Nearest
where Customers.CustId=nearest.CustId
order by Customers.CustId
into NEAREST2

Now you have a list of customers and their names (in this case)
with the store Id nearest to them.

Simple, huh?

RE: MI Exporting tables

1999-10-27 Thread James Marlow

Hi John

Probably the best way is to export the table to a .dbf file (Table | Export,
select dBase as file type), open the .dbf in Excel, fix whatever was lost in
the process (all fonts, etc), copy your newly formatted Excel spreadsheet
and then paste / past special it into Word. Unless you have a really large
table (and it sounds like you don't) then this should work just fine.

You can also place a _map_ in Word - use the File | Save Window As command
and export the map (I usually use .bmp format). Bring it into Word using the
Import | Picture | From File command and you have a map to go with your
table.

MI Lines out of control!

1999-10-27 Thread Proulx, Kim

I have had this problem on a couple of occasions now and I am hoping
someone can tell me what exactly is going on. I have a map with several
layers, the majority being from a .dwg file containing base mapping
recieved from an outside source and one layer which was digitized in
house and added to that .dwg file. When I try to edit and/or draw more
linework on any of these layers, my drawn linework "jumps" to another
area of the map and appears as a straight line even if I have drawn a
different shape or polygon. I have seen this before in other cases
where I have tried to copy existing linework to another table or to the
cosmetic layer. I suspect it has something to do with the coordinate
system, projection, or extent of the digitizing. I am able to draw on
the cosmetic layer okay but at times even this becomes finicky. Can
someone explain this so I may avoid it in the future? Right now my map
has been converted from the .dwg file in the projection non-earth
meters. Is this the problem? Thanks in advance.

RE: MI Get Point X,Y

1999-10-27 Thread PERRY Chris

Xu,

1. Select the line object
2. Open the Mapbasic window: Options > Show MapBasic Window
3. For Start point X, type in: print ObjectNodeX(selection.obj,1,1)
4. For Start point Y, type in: print ObjectNodeY(selection.obj,1,1)
5. For end point X, type in:
print
objectNodeX(selection.obj,1,objectinfo(selection.obj,20))
6. For end point Y, type in:
print
ObjectNodeY(selection.obj,1,objectinfo(selection.obj,20))

ObjectNodeX Returns the x-coordinate of a specific node in a region or
polyline object.

Syntax: ObjectNodeX( object , polygon_num , node_num )

Hope this helps,

MI Resignation of OS Director General?

1999-10-27 Thread Spencer Chainey

Dear All (mainly UK),

Not directly MI related but:
Apparently Geoffrey Robinson, Director General of Ordnance Survey (the UK's
national mapping agency) resigned yesterday. This was after serving only
one year in the post. Does anyone know the details as to why? I've been
fortunate to meet Geoff on a few occassions and discuss OS direction, and I
felt that he had things pretty well under control and that with his
leadership was going to take OS to some new and exciting levels.

Spencer Chainey

RE: MI-Thematic map

1999-10-27 Thread Robert Crossley

I have tried to write just such a facility, but unfortunately you cannot
access the information about a thematic layer programmatically. Look on
the wish list for the item about a request for a function that you could
run and it would return information about the thematic settings of a layer,
called thematic_info or something. and give it a vote.

1.) Does anyone know of an utility to transfer thematic map styles to the
original data file. I'd like to be able to save the thematic
representation without using workspaces.

MI Norwegian usergroup

1999-10-27 Thread rune . olsen

I'm posting this in norwegian, since I'm trying to create a usergroup for
MapInfo in Norway.
For all you others...well the letters may look funny...so hit "delete" or read
and smile.
(yeah, I know my name is funny :-D)

for en brukergruppe her i Norge. Form, innhold etc. kan vi sammen finne ut av,
men en tilsvarende oppbygging som den danske kan kanskje være en mal for oss?

Er dette av interesse for deg eller noen du kjenner, så ta kontakt med meg
privat:
