There is a ton of TIGER 1992 data in BNA format at CIESIN,
ftp.ciesin.org, /pub/census/usa/tiger directory. This will still be useful
for Census geographies for a few years.

RE: MI ProPress

1999-12-15 Thread Brown, Christopher (HI Perth)

I tried the beta evaluation, I think about a year ago? Thinking all my
problems would be solved when printing to our HP650c PS plotter.
Unfortunately the ProPress application version I tried did not provide me
with the solutions I expected of it!

Since then I have not followed up on how MapInfo has developed ProPress and
have also tried the HP1055 plotter, which has it's own ripper SW and it is a
"ripper" of a plotting device!!

MI Problem updating browser coords from mapper objects

1999-12-15 Thread Solid Geology Pty Ltd

Dear list
I have a browser of imported points which were used to create a
mapper in a non-earth metres projection. The points were then moved in the
mapper to correct some of their positions. I now want to update the
browser coordinates with the new positions. However, when I use the update
column command to return the centroid X and Y values, the values created
are all values less than 1 when the values I am expecting should be around
47000, 27000. Cursor location shows the correct coordinates in metres and
the units for the table are set at metres. The incorrect coordinate values
are also created if I export a DXF file and look at it in a text editor.
How to I update with the correct coordinate values?

Cheers

MI changing line styles using MB

1999-12-15 Thread Tim Warman

Mappers,

Thanks very much to everyone who provided suggestions on this. However, I'm
still having problems and must be missing something really simple. Can
anyone suggest why the following code snippet fails to alter the line styles
of the objects? I've got the program to open the file I want, select all of
the right objects into Selection, but then this next bit doesn't seem to
have any effect (I do commit and close the table later on).

dim tmpObj as Object
dim pen_style as Pen
pen_style = MakePen(1, 2, BLACK)

'.
'Change line style of selected objects.
'.
Set Map Layer 1 Editable On
Fetch First from Selection
Do while not EOT(Selection)
tmpObj=Selection.obj
Alter Object tmpObj info OBJ_INFO_PEN, pen_style
Fetch Next from Selection
Loop

I'm not sure you can. I missed out on v4.5 and jumped straight from v4 to

will cut and paste to Word 97, unlike the old standard legends. Is this what

MI Earth at night picture

NASA has a site called Astronomy Picture of the Day. I know I've seen the whole earth

an earth one as well.

Bill,

As a member of the GRASS development team, this is of interest. While I
don't have the time to work on this nest of snakes, I'd like to post this on
the GRASSlist and see who might step up. There might be some hapless grad
student at Baylor who could be coerced into working on it.

This would also fit into the plans to release a GPL GRASS for the
Win9x/Nx/2x platforms, too.

Well, naturally. The USGS developed that format with one of their
goals being that it work with their installed base of Arc/INFO
systems. (Of course, the official goal was to produce a open,
public format to facilitate data transfer between all federal
government agencies.) But in either case ESRI had a strong
interest to get in early to ensure that one of their major
customers (the USGS) could use this format on Arc/INFO software.
The USGS has a strong interest in ensuring that the software they
use will be able to handle the SDTS format, so they turned to
ESRI for assistance. Working together, the USGS gets help on the
development, and ESRI gets ahead of the GIS pack. The format is
now pretty much available to the public; there's lots of free
USGS data out there for online snarfing; the USGS can read and
write the format using their leased software, and ESRI leads the
pack in SDTS support. All goals met on paper, but what about the
spirit of the thing? We who don't have Arc/INFO available are
left holding the short end of the stick.

This alliance was no secret collusion. The process has been open
right from the start to anyone who wanted to get involved. ESRI
may have been dragged into it early on by USGS requests, but what
would tell one of your major customers? That you're not
interested? So ESRI gets the jump on everyone here, and it takes
competitors and third-party developers two years to bring other
translators to market, and these all cost hundreds of dollars.
Some still don't have a decent translator. SDTS is a very
difficult format to fully support, and IMHO, it's reach exceeds
its grasp, but still there ought to be a good PUBLIC translator
out there so that the PUBLIC and all the other non-federal govt
agencies can get some use out of it. As it is, your tax dollars
went into this development and for whatever reasons, if you still
can't use it unless you lease Arc/INFO for $20 grand, then you
are just paying your tithe to ESRI.

If we must have this format rammed down our throats, I would like
to see it so easy to use that federal state, county and municipal
governments would prefer to use it when offering their data to
the public than E00 (a proprietary format) or MapInfo TAB
(another proprietary format), or anything that requires
expensive, proprietary software. Now that Sol Katz is no longer
with us, who do we have out there who will step up and provide
public support for this public format? If you think you might be
interested, take a look at this data format beastie at
http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/sdts/.

1999-12-15 Thread Lavoie, Claude

Last July, Cliff Mugnier, Jacques Paris, and Walter ... (I only kept the

had an interesting discussion about coordinate transformation from a "Dig"
site local coordinate system to a projected system, and about whether a
3-parameter rather than a 6-parameter (as in MapInfo) transformation could
suffice.

I have to import into MapInfo a DXF file (with coordinates from a local Non
Earth system) of a construction site of roughly 1 km x 1 km, and transform
these coordinates in a MTM system. Following Cliff's advice, I intend to
use a 3-parameter transformation with 2 points known in both coordinate
systems.

Hello Rinus,

If you want to remove max/min buttons from window you actually have to change the

just let me know.

By the way KGM utility API_TEST works as designed. It removes the menuitems from
systemmenu (from top left of your window) which is usefull too, but not what you were
looking for.;-)

MI night image of the earth

1999-12-15 Thread Christovam Barcellos

Hi listers,
I saw it once. A nice and
big image of the entire Earth during the night. The background is completely
black but it is possible to recognize the most populated and industrialized
regions in the world. The version I remember was in A0 paper with high
resolution. Can anybody point me a site where I can find a digital and poor
resolution version? I would like to use it to ilustrate a conference
presentation on the use of geoprocessing for energy purposes.
Thanks in advance,

Christovam Barcellos

Re: MI High Quality Graphics Output

1999-12-15 Thread Ted Florence

The people we work with seem to be using one or more of Adobe Illustrator,
Macromedia FreeHand and Corel Draw. The advantage of using either
Illustrator or FreeHand is that with these two graphics programs you can use
our MAPublisher product which is a suite of cartographic and GIS plugins and
Xtras that provides cartographic functionality and a geo-referenced work
environment inside these two graphics programs. With MAPublisher you can
import mid/mif and other GIS formats while retaining all attributes and
geography. MAPublisher also has over 30 additional tools including
auto-labelling, auto-legend creation, projection and scale transformation
and automatic raster image registration. MAPublisher is also cross-platform,
allowing your Windows based MapInfo files to be worked on in FreeHand or
Illustrator on a Mac for design purposes.
For more information please visit http://www.avenza.com or ask the list as
there are many MAPublisher users out there who can help you make the right
decision.

Hi everyone!

We're looking for software to track people's activities on our websites.
Things like click through's, # of visits, who visits, etc. As you're all
involved in Internet stuff, I figured you might know.

Thanks!

RE: MI Changing selected object styles using MB

1999-12-15 Thread Richard . Burkmar

Tim,

I've just had a similar problem myself. Actually I wanted to use MB to
change the style MI used to highlight any selected objects - like you can
from 'Options->Preferences->Map Window' in MI. I didn't find a wholly
satisfactory way. One neat looking way was to use SelectionInfo to get the
underlying 'QueryN' table for the selection, globally changed styles in that
and then add the layer to relevant map window(s). The trouble was that this
had the unexpected drawback of preventing users from using the selection
tools in the map window(s) to pick any objects in the underlying table
unless they were in that query table - weird. In the end I had to commit
the query table to make a 'proper' base table of it - then open that and add
the layer to the relevant map window(s). Means doing a lot of housekeeping
around temp tables though.

Let me know if you find better ways.

I know this should be straightforward, but once I've selected a number of
line objects and placed them in the Selection table, is there a simple way
to change all of the lines styles to a single thickness and colour?
Something akin to selecting options>line style in MI.

TIA

MI how to remove a map window's minimize button?

1999-12-15 Thread Rinus Deurloo

Hi All,

How can I remove the minimize button in a map window's
title bar from within MapBasic?
I am using Mapinfo/MapBasic 5.5 under Windows98.
The KGM utility API_TEST (version 4.01) does not work.

Thanks in advance,

Peter,

Wont that alter the style in the underlying table? May not be a problem of
course.

Hi Tim

You have to write a function and then use it in a Update

Include "mapbasic.def"
declare Function NewStyle(byval o as object) as object

...
Update Selection set obj = NewStyle(obj)
...

Function NewStyle(byval o as object) as object
  dim tmpObj as object,
  pStyle as Pen

 pStyle   = MakePen(.)
 tmpObj = o
Altter object tmpObj Info OBJ_INFO_CODE, pStyle
 NewStyle = tmpObj
end function

RE: MI High Quality Graphics Output

1999-12-15 Thread Gabor Vasarhelyi

Steve,
i have been grappling with the same issue and found that using an image
setter print driver from MS Publisher98 was the best solution.
You print to file. This creates a high quality post script file which is
usable by commercial printers. I have tried a number of post script
printers and this is the only one that I have found to work.
cheers

Hi Mappers
I have been through the archives and haven't got a definative answer on
high quality output of data from mapinfo, I know this topic arises from
time to time but any ideas would be appreciated.

We are looking at producing high quality raster, vector and text
maps/plans to be printed professionally for our Council area and am
wondering what applications people are using to get great results (Adobe
Illustrator, corell?).

The major component of these images will be high quality raster
backdrops with polygon boundaries and text.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

cheers
Steve
