MI - remove an ADDED column

2000-03-22 Thread Ian Allan

Hi

The ADD COLUMN statement allows a new "temporary" column to be created
for an open table.

In an application I'm writing, I want to give a column the name of the
map window identifier, so that each map window can have a unique
thematic map. The thematic mapping bit works, but only the first time
through. I cant seem to find a way to make an ADD COLUMN created column
either "updateable" or "deletable", other than closing and reopening the
table (I dont want to do this).

Can anyone help?

Ian Allan

MI Knowledge Based Networking in India

2000-03-22 Thread SDNP-India

Dear Colleagues

Greetings from India!

I am sure this would be of interest to you.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)and the International
Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada in collaboration with Ministry
of Environment and Forests (India) has launched the portal site of
Sustainable Development Networking Programme, India (SDNP-India) at
http://sdnp.delhi.nic.in mirrored at http://members.tripod.com/sdnp_india.
The website has got over 40,000 hits since May 1999 which is very
encouraging.

SDNP India aims to facilitate the process of sustainable development,
promote good practices and strengthen the democratic processes through a
mechanism of information exchange between the government and research
organisations, NGOs, business establishments and the civil society over the
electronic and hybrid media.

The website provides access to a host of online databases, environmental
legislation, case studies, publications, news clippings and electronic
discussion groups on gamut of issues from Agriculture to Climate Change to
Population, Health and Human Rights. A database of international
organisations working on sustainable development issues is being maintained
on the website and has been indexed subject area wise. The links section of
the website provides gateway to over 1500 other websites concerning
environment and sustainable development.

We have started to host information on Environment and Sutainable
Development in local Indian languages too, so as to enhance the reach of
the programme.

The website also provides a platform to initiate debates and discussions,
highlight developmental issues and initiate environmental actions at all
levels through a host of services such as Building Bridges, Development Job
Opportunities, Query Desk, Dev-Online, Event Reporting service, Web-Site
Hosting and Training on Information and Communication Technologies.

More information about these services is available at the SDNP website or
by sending an email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I take this opportunity to welcome you to the SDNP-India website and assist
us in making it a comprehensive source of information on sustainable
development. We look forward to your suggestions, criticisms and
contributions towards both the site and how we can further promote
knowledge based networking in India.

MI automatically locating a caller on cellular networks

2000-03-22 Thread Rajeev saraf

Hi mappers:
This quewtion is not related much to MI but more
tp cellular telephony. Is it possible to identify the location of a cellular
celluar ( within say 20 to 25 metre accuracy) without the caller having having a
GPS or similar device. Or oes the cellular switching has any information using
which we can track a caller? Any pointers would be appreciated. I wam sure
people in RF planning may have some answer to it.

RE: MI Table Structure

2000-03-22 Thread Mark Knudsen

Brendan,

One easy way to do this is to use the MapBasic window. Assuming all the files have the
same columns to be added, you can do it once using the menu system and then just
change the file name and re-run the line in the MapBasic window.

If you know your filenames well enough, it is easy to generate a script in a text
editor so you can do them all at once (which may for instance include opening each
file, changing the structure and then closing the file - watch for filenames with
unsual characters or those that start with numbers).

Good luck

MI MapXtreme Java - Raster Images

2000-03-22 Thread Bradley Browne

The information I have seen about MapXtreme Java indicates that TAB
files for raster images can be opened, along with GeoTIFF images. I am
using the Map Definition Manager to add them but have tried
unsuccessfully to get results when opening a TAB file that refers to a
registered TIFF. The TAB files will open but no image seems to be
displayed.

Has anybody else been able to open images in MapXtreme Java ? Is there
something that I am foolishly missing ?

I do not have any GeoTIFF images that I can test, so if anyone can point
me in the direction of something I could use to test that as well I
would much appreciate it.

Cheers,

Brad

RE: Text from Word to MI 5.5

2000-03-22 Thread James Marlow

Hi Jeff

There are a couple of options (hacks for you programmers):

1) Use Word as your layout program - import the map into Word and do your
layout around it. I usually dump it to an image using File | Save Window As
but it is also possible to copy the map window and paste it as an OLE
object. To get a higher resolution of the image you export, specify an image
width of about 3 times the final size when using the File | Save Window As
command.

2) Do the same thing - but in PowerPoint. PowerPoint actually makes a pretty
good layout program and it handles images better than Word. It also has a
number of easier-to-use graphics tools that make the layout process work
better. I have had great luck using PowerPoint as the poor man's desktop
publisher - it's easy to use, the output can be scaled and it is actually
pretty powerful. You not only get a document that prints well, but also the
basis for a powerful slide presentation.

3) The third option (and this can work very well) is to get your text out to
an image file. This is not always easy to do, but it is possible. The image
file can then be placed in a Mapinfo layout window.

Whatever choice you make, you will probably find that you need to edit the
image a bit. I would suggest a wonderful shareware image editor - PaintShop
Pro. Go to http://www.jasc.com to download a 30 day trial - which is usually
enough for a quick project. I would strongly suggest registering the product
if you like it - it is a very powerful image editor with a reasonable price
(under $250 US I think).

Good luck!

MI help convert shapefile to tab

2000-03-22 Thread Tony D'Ambrosio

Trying to convert a shapefile of some city streets to a tab file, and then
overlay them with my Streetpro layer. I have been unsuccesful with the
overlay thus far, because my converted street layer winds up hundreds of
miles off. I can convert the shapefile using the UT (the shapefile is
StatePlan NAD 27) and it successfully converts to a tab file, and I think
the trick may be in the projections of the two different layers. I thought
the list woud have many a subscriber that would be familiar with this. Any
help is appreciated.

MI 5.5 Text editing/display Problem

2000-03-22 Thread LOUR FARMS

I am having a text problem with MI 5.5.

I have many workspaces all relating to Agriculture. I
recently created a new workspace which contains two newly registered raster
maps. I have managed to create polygons without difficulty but text is a real
nightmare.
Any text entered dramatically changes font size whenever
the screen is zoomed or the text is selected. If the text is moved or deleted a
part of the original highlight is left on screen which will only disappear if
the screen is zoomed. I have spent a lot of time trying to resolve the problem
to no avail.

My existing files and workspaces are all behaving normally
and text can be added and edited without difficulty.

I have recently encountered a problem while using MI

I have just registered two new raster maps and have began
to create polygons without problem. When I try to add text however, strange
things happen. If I try to move or edit the text the font size increases
dramatically. It the text is moved or deleted part of the old highlight is left

without any problem whatsoever.

MI Finding Duplicates 2

2000-03-22 Thread Portolan Geomatics Inc

Oh what a long and winding road I drove only to find out that my next
door neighbour had the answer...I will explain.

1) I tried using MI SQL to GROUP all the columns, but when I got halfway
through adding the names the GROUP clause ran out of text space to
contain the column titles.

2) Having renamed the columns from AA to BG I find out that MI 5.0 only
supports grouping on 5 columns at a time. Time to try other software...

3) Access 97 has a Find Duplicates query, but it won't run it on all the
columns at once.

4) Hey, what if I concatenated all the MI columns into one text string
and check to see duplicates in that? I exported the whole database to
Excel and set up two fixed width columns of 200 characters to contain
all the text (400 characters in all).

5) Trying to group in MI again I find out that MI 5.0 does not support
grouping when the total width of all your grouping text columns is
greater than 255 characters.

6) Opened Manifold, used the Find Duplicates Solver, found them all in
under one minute checking both database and object similarity and it
lets you select all duplicates except the first for easy deletion. Now I
just have to get the data back into MI...

I hope this info will help at least one person out there so my effort
will not have gone to waste :)

MI Split/sliver

2000-03-22 Thread Dyan Catamaran

Hi Users

At little while ago I placed a question on the split update issues for multiple
overlay polygons. Thanks for all and in particular to Martin Roundill
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for his extensive explanation.

Now I am through this one but one aspect still BUG me. Every time I perform the split
polygons procedure, I end up having a bunch of slivers polygons with total area of
about 1 square meter or even less like 7,8970E-8??!. If the centroid location is
enabled, it appears on to of a line! Why does this happen? If I split a complex
polygons layer against itself (a copy of itself of course) there is no shifting on the
positioning and therefore the resulting splitted polygon should put out at the same
location.

I wonder if this is caused by floating point calculation at the algorithm level? Any
help will be welcomed.

Thanks

MI Sum Univ. Translator problems with State Plane Coordinate

2000-03-22 Thread Tim Warman

Listers,

The original problem was that UT was unable to translate ArcView shape files
created in State Plane Coordinates (which use Survey Feet), to MapInfo .tab
files. It seems that UT, which is a subset of Safe Software's FME product,
will not recognize Survey Feet as a unit. The problem has apparently been
corrected in current versions of FME, but UT has not yet been updated.

The simplest workaround I found was to set the output file in UT to .mif
rather than .tab, and then import the .mif file. The problem with Survey
Feet doesn't seem to occur in the .shp to .mif routine. There were several
other suggestions to edit the projection files in MI, converting Survey Feet
to Feet, but this would introduce errors on large maps, as the two units are
not equivalent.

"The foot originally adopted in the U.S. was based on 39.37 inches being
equal exactly to 1 meter, and thus 1 foot equal to 0.3048006 m. In 1959,
however, the US officially adopted the inch as equal to exactly 2.54 cm, so
under this standard 1 ft equals 0.3048000 m. This difference amounts to one

MI Finding duplicates

2000-03-22 Thread Portolan Geomatics Inc

Hello list, I have a dataset that has about 4000 records, 30 columns and
lots of duplicate data. I want to delete all the records that are
duplicates(both database and object have to be exactly the same). I'd be
interested in hearing how people would deal with this. I'm thinking I
could run an SQL statement and GROUP on every single column, that would
give me all of the unique records. If I include a Count() column then
any value greater that 2 will represent a duplicate. From there I should
be able to query back to the original database and delete all of the
duplicates no matter how many, leaving only the unique ones. I haven't
found the easiest way yet to query between the databases and delete the
ones I want to but I will sum up what people say and what method worked
best for me. MI and MB solutions would be great.

Thanks,
Ron

RE: MI MapX: Labelling One Way Streets

2000-03-22 Thread Jeff James

Till,

The quickest and easiest way would be to take your street layer, copy all
the one way streets into a new temporary(?) layer, and then turn on the line
direction arrows for that new layer. Downsides to this: you get a small
blue triangular arrow (which you can't change) pointing in the direction in
which the line was drawn (which might not be the same as the street
direction), and you get one arrow per line segment (not one per polyline).

Going beyond that, you're opening up quite a can of worms. The process as I
see it involves the following:

(A) Determine the angle of the line segment in the polyline at a point
somewhere along its length near the center. I don't think MapX's polyline
features have the concept of a centroid, so you'll probably have to kludge
something together: measure the length of all the line segments that make it
up, and then mathematically determine which one contains the halfway point,
and then determine the coordinates of that halfway point. Lots of math.
Lots of fun.

(B) When you find that line segment that contains that centerpoint, you'll
use the arctangent of the difference of the change in Y (latitude) divided
by the change in X (longitude) to get an absolute angle between 0 and 90
(where 0 is horizontal and 90 is vertical). In pseudocode, it will probably
look like this: Angle = Atn((Y1-Y2)/(X1-X2)). Determining the exact angle
within a 360 degree circle will entail your adding some number to that (90,
180, or 270) based upon whether or not the X's and Y's of the one endpoint
are less than or greater than the X's and Y's of the other point.

(C) Finally, once you've got that, you'll need to create a new layer for
dropping your new "one-way" symbols, rotated appropriately.

Needless to say, I don't envy you this task.

There could be other issues -- and there could be a much easier way that I'm
overlooking -- but this is off the top of my head. Looks good on paper, if
nothing else.

Good luck,

Subject: MI MapX: Labelling One Way Streets

Hi, Listers!

Here is one which we really need your help on:

Question:
=> How do I find the angle of a line at a given point without having to
write a lengthy MapBasic program? (MapX would be OK since we're developing a
C++ application)

Problem:
=> Putting a "One Way" Symbol on each of the street segments that
represent One Way streets.
=> Symbol should be placed only once for each street, in or near the
centroid, and in an appropriate angle. Streets are MI lines with 0 to many
vertices, starting and ending in a crossroads, with no crossing in between.

Prerequisites:
=> We would prefer a solution using SpatialWare / Oracle / MapX (as
opposed to MI Pro / MapBasic).
=> Coordinates of beginning and end of lines are available in
SpatialWare.
=> We're dealing with millions of streets, 10% of which are One Way...

Any hints would be greatly appreciated! - Will post a summary.

Currently, the only way to display vector
data directly in both IE and Netscape is to use java applets.
Both MapXtreme NT and Java can use java
applets to deliver vector on the client. Everything is a matter of setting
your server application accordingly.

MI RE: Scale problem

2000-03-22 Thread Mark . Percival

Ahmet

I've had this problem before but never had a satisfactory answer from anyone
(users & MapInfo tech.). What I have found out is that if you set the scale
in the layout to 1:1001 or if it's 1:500 set it to 1:501 it will normally
come come out near enough as makes no difference. Also remember that if
your base maps are digitised at, for instance, 1:1250 each line on the page
will equal 0.5 metres on the ground so printing at 1:1000 and loosing 1 mm
should not be too much of a problem, however annoying. You should also look
at the type of paper your using (stretch is a factor) and the humidity in
the office environment - this is particularly relevant when printing on
negatives.

Hope that helps

Re: MI Raster images

Sahra,

You can download digital elevation models of most of the US at the US
geological survey site.
http://edc.usgs.gov/glis/hyper/guide/1_dgr_demfig/index1m.html Select the
region you want and download the (compressed) data. Use Mapinfos DEM to Grid
converter to convert the data to a MapInfo Grid map.

The resulting map is in effect a raster image but one that can be colored
thematicaly and by hill shading. You can also create elevation contour maps
by using GridContour (download at www.mercatorgeo.nl).

Good luck,

Sarah,

You can look at the site of the US Geological survey.
http://edc.usgs.gov/doc/edchome/ndcdb/ndcdb.html . Here you can download
1:250,000 DEM files of most of the US (I am sure Texas will be there
somewhere :) ). You can use Mapinfo's DEM to Grid converter to convert the
data into a MapInfo Grid.

You can use mapinfo to thematically color the differences in elevation and
to apply hillshading. You can also GridContour ( download at
www.mercatorgeo.nl ) to create contour lines and surfaces from thes grids.

Good Luck,
Roeland
