MI Graphics Adapter

2000-09-07 Thread Paul Janse van Vuuren

Hi

Could someone please help as to suggesting what sort of graphics card will
best work with MapInfo.

Would a 3D Card be advisable, or a card that equally supports 2D and 3D. I'm
looking at around 32MB onboard RAM.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

RE: MI and Visual Basic

2000-09-07 Thread Richard . Burkmar

Jas,

I'm not sure if its important, but are you reparenting the MapInfo windows
to your VB form (e.g. MIObject.Do "set application window " Me.hwnd) - if
MI is poping up a 'save edits' dialog when you issue the close all, this
might have a bearing.

Using "Close All" will close all tables and discard any changes made. No
dialog box will be displayed. "Close All Interactive" will show any dialog
boxes.

I have been trying to figure this one out for you, but I haven't come up
with an answer. After closing all tables I always 'Set MapInfo = Nothing'
and then re-instantiate Mapinfo, though I was doing this for other reasons -
Mapinfo used to (and may still) have memory leak problems and this solved
it.

Sometimes in Inegrated mapping applications the whole thing locks because
 MI

MI transitioning from MapBasic to Mapx

Title: RE: MI MapInfo Pro 6.0 Demo

Hi,

We

I have

  Can I

  How

Purely from a development environment perspective,

  comments?
If
people have gone to a similar transition: any other suggestions, caveats, tips

MI MB language history

2000-09-07 Thread Jacques Paris

I have just finished compiling a history of the changes in the MapBasic
language since the initial Windows 3.0 up to and including 6.0. I have put
it in the form of a pdf document of slightly over 150K. It is certainly not
a document that could become a substitute to an official publication but it
offers hints about when changes were introduced in the language and what
they involved.

As there is no official publication about that subject, there is plenty of
room for lacking precise information, for relying on various kinds of
documents, for calling on personal experience. My hope is that we could
through a collective effort constitute a solid basis on the subject and I am
offering that document as a starting block.

E-mail me if you are interested and feed me with more, better info to
improve the document. Thanks in advance.

Re: MI transitioning from MapBasic to Mapx

2000-09-07 Thread GeoInfo Solutions Ltd.

I worked on these questions for a large government organization recently.

No. MapX has no built-in query engine. E.g. it uses the VB database
object to query an access database and map objects are linked to the access
database.

Many other features, like the info tool, have to be created from scratch.

* Could I use MapX in a Java environment?
Yes
* How does MapX development compare with Integrated Mapping (control

Integrated mapping can access almost all mapinfo functionality that
mapbasic can access.

Why?
If people have gone to a similar transition: any other suggestions,
caveats, tips are very welcome.

It can take three times as long to build in mapx vs mapbasic because of the
'wrappers' that are needed. The end result will be less prone to OLE
system errors than an integrated app and more attractive and less expensive
than a mapbasic deployment.

Good luck

MI: Integrated mapping with ProViewer

What we have in mind is a VB program that launches an instance of ProViewer

I would like to hear any comments on similar experiences, and how it
resembles or differs from integrating a MI Pro instance into a VB program.

RE: MI transitioning from MapBasic to Mapx

2000-09-07 Thread Richard . Burkmar
Title: RE: MI MapInfo Pro 6.0 Demo

Bart (if thats your
real name!),

You ask some pretty
big questions, for which I'll contribute a few partial answers and
opinions. I'm sure you'll get plenty of other respondents
too.

Can I implement in MapX ALL functionality, which
is offered by MapInfo Professional (version 6.0)?

The simple answer is
no. For example you cannot create a thematic map of grid type in MapX
(though I think that all the other types are available) and you cannot snap to
underlying nodes or trace lines when generating new features (though with clever
programming you might be able to do something similar), to name just a
couple. For the most part though, MI's functionality is available in MapX
in one form or another, though it often works a little differently. On the
flip side, MapX offers some features which MI doesn't, for example features can
be selected from more than one layer at once.

Could I
use MapX in a Java environment?

I don't know too
much about Java at present, but MapX can be used in any development environment
that supports COM (e.g. C++ and VB). You may also be intersted in finding
out a little more about MapXtreme Java edition which is a 100% Java solution for
deploying 'MapJ' (functionaly very similar to MapX) solutions across the
internet or intranet.

How does MapX development compare with Integrated
Mapping (control MapInfo from a C++ client program, basically by sending
MapBasic statements via OLE), both from functionality perspective and a
development environment perspective?

It really doesn't
compare - MapX is much better, certainly from the point of view of
development. MapX is implemented as a mapping OCX control and object
hierarchy complete with events, methods, properties etc. If you're a C++
developer you've probably used many COM based third-party controls before and
you'll find learning and using MapX a snip and soon a pleasure. As I've
said before, MapX and MI are functionaly a little different - if you want to
give your users an MI type 'Info' tool or 'Browser' for example, you'll have to
develop them, though this is not usually too difficult. The freedom you
have to implement this kind of functionality in which ever way you want to is
refreshing if you are used to being constricted by an integrated
mapping/MapBasic environment. Forget all about MapBasic - it'll be of no
use to you with MapX.

Purely from a development environment perspective,
the new ArcInfo version (with MapObjects) seems more attractive. Any
comments?

Don't have any experience of MapObjects,
though I find it hard to imagine why it would be more attractive than MapX (you
can see I'm a MapX fan). Of course Avenue vs MapBasic is a completely
different argument, but that's not relevant
here.

Good
luck,

Richard
Burkmar.

MI GIS Website Ratings: September Update

2000-09-07 Thread Steve Lackow

An update of the GIS Website Ratings for September 2000 is (finally)
available on the RPM Information Network at http://rpmconsulting.com. This
September marks the two year anniversary of these ratings, and an historical
archive is also available. As a reminder, these metrics are based on server
and network diagnostics, and upon the form, structure and design of served
pages, and not on the habits of a panel.

These two years have seen some remarkable changes in the virtual GIS
landscape. The Web has made maps so ubiquitous that they are now advertised
in the US on Monday Night Football. Indeed, the shift towards maps for a
mass audience and away from peer-to-peer tech talk mirrors the chasm
crossing for the entire Web. Many of us expected GIS and mapping
applications to hit the mainstream around the year 2000 -- but few
anticipated that Mapquest would be the "killer app", though many anticipated
a Microsoft entry to help things along. A brief review of the September
1998 ratings shows that 3 of the major GIS vendors were among the Top 5,000
visited sites on the Web at that time. Today, none are -- with only ESRI
among the Top 10,000, and only Bentley (site recently redesigned and very
pretty) and MapInfo (site still relatively slow) improving visitation from
the measures of two years ago. Except for the top vendor sites, all of the
top sites for September 2000 prominently serve maps. Even traffic at the
venerable Xerox PARC site has picked up. Also notable is the growing
prominence of the National Geographic Map Machine.

Among the data portals, the big news is perhaps the nascent Geography
Network, with its promise of tying users (and their digital resources)
together across the globe. But it is the GIS Data Depot where visits are
currently most prominent -- a well-organized site robust with basic content.

It certainly would be wonderful if someone at the U.S. BLM would pick up
where the late Sol Katz left off -- if that is even possible. Traffic to
Sol's site continues, but it has not been revised in a long time and is,
sadly, starting to feel like a ghost town.

In 2000, we added a suite of format tests to help webmasters improve their
document, table and form structure and image syntax. This makes pages load
more correctly and faster. Virtually every site rated continues to contain
some type of error, and some remain particularly sloppy. Most often the
culprit is image syntax, usually the failure to place WIDTH, HEIGHT and ALT
tags. When WIDTH and HEIGHT are not set, pages take longer to load because
it takes time for the browser to recognize page layout. The ALT tag is
important so that users who don't see the images can still know what they
are. This effects not only users with older and non-graphical browsers and
those with images turned off, but particularly those who are visually
impaired or who are accessing the web by phone with a screen reader. Two
commercial sites (Claritas and MicroImages/TNT) and two non-commercial ones
(Odden's Bookmarks and AI-Geostats, both redesigned) are coded perfectly.

Finally, this month's visitors to the RPM Infonet at
http://rpmconsulting.com will find some powerful new tools for banking
research and planning in the new dataBank portion of the site. Public
health practitioners will find an update on RPM's activities in Mozambique
and an archive of Chuck Croner's fine Public Health GIS newsletters,
including the current issue. Coming this Fall is Powerstation, a dedicated
site for business geographics.

As always, we look forward to your visits, comments and contributions.

I'm trying to save a SQL query between a native MapInfo table and a
registered xls table. But when I do, I get an error message saying "No
edits pending for table...". Here's the code:

***
Register table Applicationdirectory$()+"test_join_co_wc.xls"
   Type XLS
   Titles Range "Sheet1!A2:CU1398"
   Into Applicationdirectory$()+"test_join_co_wc.tab"

open table applicationdirectory$()+"test_join_co_wc.tab" As
BDdescriptive_CO

'commit table BDdescriptive_CO as BDdescriptive_CO_MI
'close table BDdescriptive_CO
'open table BDdescriptive_CO_MI

SELECT *
FROM Wirecenter,BDdescriptive_CO
WHEREWirecenter.sucal = BDdescriptive_CO.clli
INTO CO_WC_joint

commit table CO_WC_joint
***

I tried it through MapInfo and encoutered no problem in saving the
query. I checked and there is a CO_WC_joint table created following the
query, but then I'm not able to save it with MapBasic.

Another thing: If I try to issue the command "commit table
BDdescriptive_CO as BDdescriptive_CO_MI" (when it's not a comment),
I get an error message saying that "variable or field
BDdescriptive_CO_MI is not defined". But it's not a variable, it's the
name under which I want to save the table!

Those are very simple commands, but something's wrong and I couldn't
grasp it. Help me please!

Thanks,

Jeff Lepine

MI Mapxtreme Access to Novell Data

2000-09-07 Thread Jerry E. Howard

I need Help!

I am trying to set up a MapXtreme application using NT 4.0,
IIS 3.0 as a web server that is attached to a very large
Novell Network. The data I need to access resides on a
secured Novell Drive. I am having trouble with MapXtreme
accessing that data apparently due to IIS requiring Null
access security or something like that. I must have some
certain security privileges to access the data on the Novell
network.

Is there something I can do to access the data or do I need
to run a different web server on the NT machine in order to
gain access to the data?

MI Save File dialogue not working

2000-09-07 Thread Hans Vidkjer

Dear Mappers,
I have an unusual problem. I'm running v4.5 on Win95 (that's gotta be an
unusual problem right there, but that's another story). Anyway, after
I've had MI open for about 5 min, my Open Table dialog will no longer
display. I try from the main toolbar and via FileOpen Table - nothing.
Same thing with my Save Table dialog. All I can do is exit MI and
re-launch the program. After that, everything works OK until about 5 min
later, when the same thing starts happening again. This seems to be
happening only with MI. MS Orifice works OK, as do many other apps.

Is this a problem with:
OS?
Hardware?
MI?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Hans

MI Updating columns in Mapbasic

2000-09-07 Thread Jim Wilson

Hi
all,
I'm (slowly)
learning mapbasic and I'm trying to update the value of _col2 based on the
number in _col3 * _col1. To this end I have tried 2 different ways of achieving
this.
1. Select all the
records in Tablename that fall within certain parameters and then update
Tablename from that selection. (the batch approach)
i.e.

Select * FromTablename Where_col1 15
Fetch First From Selection
Do While Not EOT(Selection)
Update Selection Set _col1 = _col2
Loop

This doesn't
work

2. so I tried
to loop through all the records in the table updating _col2 based on the value
in Tablename._col1
ie

Fetch First from Tablename
Do While Not EOT(Tablename)
 If (Tablename._col1=15) Then

Update Tablename Set _col2=_col3

ElseIf Tablename._col115 and Tablename._col1=16 Then

Update Tablename Set _col2=(_col3-((_col3/100)*1.2))

ElseIf Tablename._col116 Then

Update Tablename Set _col2=(_col3-((_col3_col2/100)*17))
 End
If
 Fetch Next From Tablename
Loop

This doesn't work
either!
I know this must be
a very simple thing to try and do - so could anyone please point me in the right
direction?

Thanks,

Jim Wilson

Re: MI Crystal Report

2000-09-07 Thread peterelphick

Crystal reports is a separate program and not part of Mapinfo. Therefore
there are no Mapbasic command to run Crystal report.
The best you are likely to be able to do is 'Run Application' to run crystal
reports, and then possibly supply some command line
arguments.

If you buy the full CR package as opposed to the cut-down version supplied
with MI, you also get an ActiveX control that can be
used to run compiled reports directly from e.g. Visual Basic without going
through the CR package.

 Hi all,

Is it possible to automate Crystal Report through MapBasic codes? I can
create the report manually. But don't have a clue about how to do it
 through MapBasic. Any suggestions?

 TIA

Hi Users

I wonder what is the "Pad" or "Palm" computer solution using MI products?

The "Go to the Field and Map" concept is quite interesting. We do
considerable field work and eventually we will adopt a pad solution. The
majority of our mapping is done in MI although we also use AV.

I'm having problems uploading waypoints from a MI table to a Garmin 12XL
using Garfile freeware. ( Downloading is great and the results are
 surprinsing)

The test table contains a single point with the only attribute being the
object id (10). The table is saved with the lat/long wgs84 projection and
 exported as a MIF file.

The transfert is done but the GPS unit gives me the following message:
 RECEIVED AN INVALID WPT.

 Any help welcomed.

MI vanishing north symbols- solved

2000-09-07 Thread Bob Hudson

Thanks to Stan Johnston and others for helping solve this problem- though
how it has been solved is still a mystery
Our office version of MapInfo 5.5 has a drop box with various NORTH symbols
in the
symbols preferences. I made several maps using one that said NORTH with an
elongated wedge above it pointing upward/north. When I saved the finished
products as windows metafiles the maps were fine, except
that the north symbols displayed on my home computer as hatch marks, or
hash marks as most people
insist on calling them. It appears a windows metafile is more a file than a
picture in some ways, and wants to find fonts to display some symbols
properly. So I copied the MapInfo fonts into my home windows font
file- and the metafiles now display the north symbol. The only bit I don't
understand is that when out of curiosity I opened the MapInfo font files I
transferred home, NONE of them appeared to contain that nifty NORTH symbol
with the wedge above it. Still, mustn't grumble :-)

Re: MI Run application

2000-09-07 Thread steph Morel

Hi Milo
look at this

I hope it will help you

stephane

Purpose

Runs a MapBasic application or adds a MapInfo workspace.

Syntax

Run Application file
file is the name of an application file or a workspace file

Description

The Run Application statement runs a MapBasic application or loads a
MapInfo workspace.
By issuing a Run Application statement, one MapBasic application can run
another application. To do so, the file parameter must represent the
name of a compiled application file. The Run Application statement
cannot run an uncompiled application.
To halt an application launched by the Run Application statement, use
the Terminate Application statement.

Example

The following statement runs the MapBasic application, REPORT.MBX:

  Run Application "C:\MAPBASIC\APP\REPORT.MBX"

The following statement loads the workspace, Parcels.wor:

  Run Application "Parcels.wor"

Milo Simonic a écrit :

What is the syntax of a mapbasic command to run an application? I want to

I get an error. I do not have a Mapbasic so I cannot check the syntax.
