I've checked the usgs FAQ page and I think it might boil down to one of two issues. First, the dems are in "Motorola byte order", as opposed to "Intel byte order". The second is that the GTOPO30 format is 16-bit signed integer data in simple binary raster format, while the 1-degree usgs dems are in ASCII format. Could it be that the Mapinfo dem-to-grid tool is expecting ASCII and getting binary? I'd appreciate any advice on this matter. cheers, Tom Nehrbass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: MI Gradient/slope shading
Michelle, I think Vertical Mapper would be able to help you with this problem. By performing a slope calculation on the DEM file you can easily define areas that are to steep for a vineyard. In fact you can use the Grid Query on the results of slope and aspect calculation to determine ideal locations that are not only at a preferred slope but also the preferred orientation to true north. These are just two of many tools that can be used for this application. RE: MI Nearest Neighbor Analysis
Chiu, Vertical Mapper has a natural neighbour analysis tool which generates a voronoi diagram (theissen polygons) from which density can be measured. The measure of density is based upon the area of each point's polygon where a small area indicates high density and a large area indicates lower density. RE: MI 3-D GIS
Tony, Northwood Technologies has two products that perform 3D in a GIS. Vertical Mapper has a 3D component called GridView which will allows you generate 3D scenes including the portrayal of buildings and other features. If you want to take your 3D analysis to the next step try Virtual Frontier which allows you to place objects into the scene (trees, cars), generate buildings from heighted .dxf files, and fly around the scene manually or along a flight path. In addition to this you are able to render an image to the side of each building making them look more realistic. Both product work closely with MapInfo Professional. RE: MI Vertical Mapper problem
Trevor, It is curious that GridView can only be launched from Explorer and not from the Grid Manager. Can you provide me with some more details such as any error messages? I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say you are overlaying the dam level. Is this a drape file or is this another grid? If it is another grid which simulates the surface of the water and you are trying to display it in 3D along with an elevation grid then I can see how your are having problems. The minimum value of the second grid you enter into the scene will always appear at the minimum value of the master grid (first grid in the scene). When using elevation information make sure you are viewing them in true scale and the base of the second grid is set to zero and is turned off. To calculate the volume all you need to do is use the Grid Calculator and subtract the ground elevation grid from the water surface elevation grid. RE: MI VM2
Litea, 1. When using Grid Splicer to add building footprints to a DEM you have to be sure to use the correct splicing method. This will depend on which elevation value each building footprint is attributed with i.e. the height of the building above the ground or above sea level. Generally it is the building height above the ground and it sounds like from your problem that this is the case. In this situation you should use a Merge using the Maximum as the calculation method. 2. I am not sure I understand this question however you are able to insert the building into the 3D scene as a separate layer from the DEM. In this way you can see your buildings and give the DEM some degree of transparency. 3. If I understand your question correctly you can get the effect of having the grid invisible. For example if you wanted to show a street network file in 3D but you don't want to see the DEM you would do the following. First place the grid and the street network file in the same Map window. Next, open the Layer Control and make the grid invisible. Next, make a drape of the window. Finally, in GridView open the DEM and the corresponding drape file. Make the DEM totally transparent which makes it invisible. The regions were converted to a grid with the Region to Grid utility, using the building height for elevation. Using the Grid Splicer utility, the building grid is stamped on the DTM. The projection and the grid units of the two grids are the same. The resulting grid has pockets where the buildings stand. 2. Can a building grid be represented as columns with a transparent base in Grid View? 3. Can a drape file be created with a transparent background? (Grid is not visible in the layer). RE: MI Simple 3D Map
Michael, >From what you wrote I assume you are trying to create a 3D chloropleth map where each state is vertically displaced depending upon a value. If this is what you are looking for read on. 1. Because you are dealing with such a large area I would make sure you map is in a projection that will be easy to work in (not longitude/Latitude). I would recommend Universal Transverse Mercator (NAD 83) Zone 14 or 15. 2. If you wish to have Alaska and Hawaii in your 3D scene, physically move them closer. I know this will not be geographically correct but it will limit the size of the resulting grid. If they are not within the bounds of your analysis, delete them. 3. Next, choose Vertical Mapper > Create Grid > Region to Grid to convert the region file to a grid. Choose the column from which cells will obtain their value, in your case it will be the ordinal field. Choose a relatively small cell size like 5000 metres and choose OK. For better results use a smaller cells size. 4. Use GridView to render it in 3D. For better results create a drape file. RE: MI Contour Line Query
Myles, Vertical Mapper can solve your problem. This is a fast three step process where the first step is to use the Poly-to-Point utility to generate a point file from the contour lines. Next, with one of the five interpolation techniques you can create a grid surface representing the elevation information. Finally, the Point Inspection utility is implemented which creates a new column in your man hole cover point file and updates it with the elevation value from the grid. RE: MI DEM Distortion of California
Aaron, The distortion that your are describing is the result of the grid being in a projection that uses longitude and latitude as its coordinate units. The source of the distortion is that in these projection systems the distance in the X direction is different than it is in the Y direction (lines of longitude converge at the poles). Therefore if you were to represent a one degree by one degree area with a single grid cell the cell must be rectangular, however Vertical Mapper grids can only square cells. The distortion that you see is the result of MapInfo modifying the vector information to match the raster. You can achieve similar kinds of distortion by registering an aerial photograph that is not orthorectified. Fix: Use the Reproject utility and convert the grid to a projection that uses linear measurements. For California try Universal Transverse Mercator (NAD27 for US) Zone10. The problem occurrs when I open all the files that cover the state. With all the files open, California get squished, it becomes shorter and wider. The state looses approx. 1/8th of its original height and gains a bit in its width. Does anyone know why this may be happening? Is there any type of fix that can be used. RE: MI VM Slope Analysis
Peter, In Vertical Mapper the slope for a grid node is calculated by averaging the slopes of the eight triangle faces that are formed from the surrounding nodes. The average is taken so that the resulting slope value is not overly influenced by "flyers" in the dataset. I hope this helps. Try Symbol Plotter from Northwood Geoscience. It gives you the ability to create your own symbols and plot them at specific locations and rotations. Best of all they do not not change size when zooming in and out. So you can have your 4 km symbol and have it stay that way. Download Symbol Plotter free from http://www.northwoodgeo.com/vertframecover.htm and go to Free Utilities James Harvie Vertical Mapper Product Manager Northwood Geosience Ltd. 43 Auriga Drive, K2E 7Y8 Nepean, Ont, Canada 613-224-2020 -Original Message- From: Shannnon Skistad <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Monday, September 27, 1999 9:10 AM Subject: MI Drat! Re: MI VMapper vs. dBplanner
Natalie, Here is a brief response to your query. Both Vertical Mapper and deciBel Planner are products of Northwood Geoscience Ltd. and both run inside the MapInfo environment. Vertical Mapper adds the raster GIS component to MapInfo allowing users to generate continuous surfaces (grids) from point information. Once created they can then be analyze, edited, and visualized in many ways. deciBel Planner takes the same grid technology and applies it to the telecommunication industry. In fact the Vertical Mapper product is included with dBPlanner but the name is changed to "Surface Analysis". It uses grid technology to help RF engineers plan, optimize, and maintain a wireless communication network. Re: MI Sdts to DEM format conversion
Vertical Mapper's import utility has a SDTS translator that can perform batch processing, although it is not free. The convenient feature about this translator is that it extracts only the DEM from the compressed .gz file so you do not have to un-compress the file and find the DEM information yourself. Re: MI-VM profile
Sharon, In the latest release of Vertical Mapper (version 2.5) the X axis units for the Cross Section Tool can be set to a variety of distance units including kilometres. This is done in the Preferences dialogue (Vertical Mapper > Preferences). In earlier versions the X axis was determined by the distance units of the grid's projection. If your version is older than than version 2.5 then try creating a custom projection with the unit identifier in the projection string set to kilometres (m=7, km=1). For example change this: "UTM Zone 18 (NAD 83)\p26918", 8, 74, 7, -75, 0, 0.9996, 50, 0 To this: "Custom Projection", 8, 74, 1, -75, 0, 0.9996, 50, 0 For more information on this check out Creating Your Own Coordinate System in the MapInfo Professional Reference Guide.
