re[2]: MI ESRI Shapefile and MapX Compatibility Question

2000-09-08 Thread Jeff Cole

Doug & the List,

It seems to be a common misconception that the ESRI Shape format is a public format
with a "published structure". Sure, the SHP, SHX and DBF formats are documented.
Where are the SBN, SBX, AVL, and PRJ file formats "publicly" documented? These very
important files contain important spatial indexing, map projection, rendition, legend
and other information that is critical in order to support the format effectively.

As it has been said many times on this list - MapInfo offers their MFAL dynamic link
library on very reasonable terms for folks who need to support TAB files directly in
their application. We also offer a TAB Reader COM library for the same reason. Both
approaches are significantly less costly then developing your own code, even around a
published document.

MI Geographic Calculator 5.0 is now available

2000-07-27 Thread Jeff Cole

Does coordinate conversion frustrate you? Are you spending way too much time
converting your MapInfo data and databases between coordinates systems, datums,
projections, and units?

Geographic Calculator 5.0 is Now Available!

Blue Marble Geographics announces the release of Geographic Calculator version 5.0. A
number of significant enhancements have been incorporated into the latest release of
this leading coordinate conversion software. Vertical datum support, true batch
processing and an expanded parameter database top the long list of features destined
to take this product to next level.

Again, special upgrade pricing is available for existing users of this software; we
have also incorporated great per-seat value with the recent introduction of our
network license model. We offer convenient 5, 10, and 20 concurrent-user network
licenses. Please visit Blue Marble on the World Wide Web:

re: MI: MI Raster registration.

1999-10-28 Thread Jeff Cole

We've just released version 4.0 of the Geographic Transformer. The Geographic
Transformer will automatically convert the coordinate system and/or reference point
parameters contained within GeoTIFF headers into native Mapinfo TAB files for use
directly within MapInfo. You can evaluate the Transformer at
http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/products.asp?id=2&p=evaluate.

re: MI GPS & USGS DRGs

1999-10-07 Thread Jeff Cole

Roy,

You most likely are displaying GPS positions with respect to WGS84. Your USGS DRGs
are most likely being displayed with respect to NAD27. This incompatibility explains
the shift of a couple of hundred feet (~200 maximum within the US) in longitude.

You can either 1) change the coordinate system within MapInfo or 2) change the
reference datum within your GPS receiver interface.

Good luck,
Jeff

We've had great success with the Wise Installer ( http://www.wiseinstall.com ) over

re: MI GeoObjects 2?

1999-08-30 Thread Jeff Cole

Richard,

We sincerely apologize about the delay in getting back to you regarding web sites that
are using GeoObjects. I know it's a poor excuse, but we've been absolutely swamped
with our GeoObjects Competitive Upgrade offer, having upgraded several hundred
MapObjects and MapX developers in the last few weeks.

As we informed you of earlier, our GeoObjects Internet Map Server product simply
doesn't exist yet. Information isn't available on our website at this point, we'll
let you know when detailed information and pricing is available. We are in fact
compiling a list of sites that are using the component as we move towards the formal
launch of our GeoObjects Internet Map Server product. We've always found it hard to
promote a product until it actually ships. Things are just easier for both our users
and us that way.

We're happy to hear that GeoObjects meets the task for you. Of course, our
documentation is targeted towards developers as they are ultimately the users of the
product. Please get me a list of issues with the Getting Started Guide documentation,
we'll incorporate them into the next release. We strive to make it better daily. If
you haven't noticed, the GeoObjects Getting Started Guide is patterned after the ESRI
MapObjects Getting Started Guide demo and documentation, focused primarily on
upgrading MO developers to the Blue Marble GeoObjects component. The documentation
was quite simplified as the underlying product is quite a bit simplier to use.

Richard, I know this is a long post but I have a quick story for you that may be
somewhat relevant. While I was in college I frequented a shop that made canoe paddles
and oars (Shaw and Tenney in Old Town, Maine) . I got to know the Mr. Tenney (the
"master" maker) very well. They made "firsts" which were perfect, and "seconds"
which were slightly imperfect. The company name only went on the firsts, never the
seconds. I asked Mr. Tenney why he never put his company name on a "second". He
explained to me that someone seeing the paddle lying about in a canoe would never know
it wasn't a first and would assume that it was his best effort.

Blue Marble will put it's name on its internet map server solution as soon as it's
available (as a "first") and do it's best to tell the world about it.

We'll be formally announcing our GeoRoute component next week. In the meantime, you
might find it interesting to check http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/products.asp?id=62 for
more information.

GeoRoute is the easiest way to put routing features in your application! GeoRoute
enables Windows and Internet applications to present optimal routes (based on distance
or time) and generate point-to-point directions, simply by adding a simple plug-n-play
component.

There is no need to depend on expensive routing databases, you can create routing
databases from regular map files including native MapInfo MIF (TAB coming soon) and
ESRI Shape files directly, without conversion. GeoRoute can use street data that you
already own!

Jeff

Check in your MapInfo Professional box for a pamphlet describing the Blue Marble

been included with every MapInfo Professional package since Version 4.0. They provide
a simple GPS interface for MapInfo Professional. You can install the Geographic
