That I thought was the difference between the STF-1 and STF-3
 stuff. But I
thought the STF-1 demopgrahics were actual not sampled.

that is correct.

based on my conversations with people at census, it seems that everything
will be on their website, and it will also be published on cd-rom. at the
time i spoke to them, the actual format of the data on cd was unknown, but
likely to be some propriatary binary form. with 69 different racial
categories the dataset will be a lot bigger. they said that if they do go
with the binary form, then they will also publish them in flat text
(hopefully compressed)

MI The Census - No Demographics?

2000-03-16 Thread Dan Munson

I just filled out my 2000 census.
Interestingly, it asked only about how many people, what race they were, and
whether Iowned my house.

There were no demographic questions. Is this
true? Does this mean no free year 2000
demographics?Dan

Under the older stuff, I thought everyone got some demographics, but some
got the brutal, long form.

thought the STF-1 demopgrahics were actual not sampled.

Dan: You received the short form. There is a long form which is 30 pages
long which asks demographic info. Not everyone gets the long form. I
believe the short form is used to satisfy the "head count" requirement",
while the long form is sent to fewer people, i.e. the demographic type
stuff
 will be sampled.

US Census Demographic data is based on the "long form," which is sent to about 1 out of 6 households, and ascribed to all households in a given area (block, block group, tract, etc.) One of those non-secrets that makes census data less reliable for some purposes, but no less marketable. I'm sure that the 2000 data will still be "free" in raw form.

RE: MI The Census - No Demographics?

2000-03-16 Thread Talkofsky GS09 Stuart H

I got the Census too, kind of bugged me with the lack of questions and all.
They at least know where you live and how old you are. I expected more
questions. I think they are sampling the rest of the population for the
other stuff. I read there is more than one form. When do people think we
will have the information available to us? Hopefully the info would be on
the free census site. I don't know if there is any budget for us to get
complete new information, I know this info is on the bottom of the
priorities when it comes to tight budgets.. Something to think about in
future planning.
