MI-L Newcomer help

2004-11-28 Thread Rakesh Rao

Hello,

I am a total newcomer to MapInfo 7.0 but have programmed in VB / C++ / Lisp etc
on other
platforms. I have just got it installed and would like to know what are the
available development
platforms in MapInfo 7.0.

I understand that the native development tool is MapBasic. My questions are:

1. Is Mapbasic the only platform for Mapinfo 7.0? If yes, how do I get started
with it? Where is
the online programmers documentation etc?

2. Is VB or VBA a possible programming tool?

Let me know some answers so I can get started with your kind help.

Regards
Rakesh

Subject: MI-L Insert nodes into polyline

 Hello list,
I need to create a node every 3 km from the start of the polyline, and
remove any nodes that already exist - the current inflection points are not
important, so long as the nodes that are created every 3 km still fall along
the path of the original line.
 Could anybody help me?.

 Thanks,
 Maia

MapBasic is it. Documentation can be downloaded for free from MapInfo at
http://extranet.mapinfo.com/support/documentation/manuals.cfm#mapbasic,
but you have to buy and install the development environment before you can
build any applications.

 2. Is VB or VBA a possible programming tool?

You can use VB to send MapBasic statements to your application, but you
still need some sort of MapBasic application as a base. VBA doesn't work.
You can also call stdcall DLL's from MapBasic, so you can extend your
MapBasic application with help from the Windows API or from code you write
in Delphi, or any other language that can create stdcall DLLs (VB can't do
this.)

You might want to have a look at ScriptBuilder
I have been using it since it came several years ago
It uses Delphi/C++Builder as a base/default but
works several others JavaScript, ActivePython, ActivePerl
with links to download them
like up with MS ADO for database work [also Borland BDE]
Versions are Free, Standard [register], and RunTime distribute
I have some code for MapInfo, email me I you would like a copy.

Re: MI-L App that Resolves Workspaces with Missing Tables

2004-11-28 Thread Stephen Chan
Check out my app.

Just got back from Darwin and have finally perused all my emails =).
Here is the final build for public use as I have not received as many
feedback forms as I would have liked.

http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/619

Note to all who I have already emailled. The link above is the latest
build. Allows full automation. Previous version I forgot to remove
testing stubs so the search mechanism does not work properly: it will
only show one table (the last one found.)

I hope everyone finds this app time saving and useful! =]
Especially the admins who have to deal with the IT / MIS guys who
think it would be fun(ny) to change drive letters and the such.

Resolve Workspace Tables from Steve's Mapinfo User's Toolbox (RWT-SMUT).
This app will process a workspace file where tables are missing and
generate a new workspace file which opens.

This app is useful if your table files no longer exists as it removes
all references to it in the workspace file.

This app is also useful if the location of your tables have moved as
there is a directory search facility that will replace the entry of
your tables with the new location. (Note search directories must be
set.)

Functionality:
Searching facility for missing tables.
Removes references of missing tables.

Options:
Perform Search: Uses search directories set.
Use 1st Option: Automatically uses first table found in search
otherwise prompts user to select.
Use Only Option: Automatically uses table found in search if it is the
only one otherwise prompts user to select.

I hope you all find it useful. I have currently extended the app so it
does batch jobs. Works well although there is some part of the code I
need to look at at the moment.

MI-L SUM: MI and SQL Server

2004-11-28 Thread Doug Pease
Thanks to all who replied and confirmed what I basically already knew
and that is :

MI can communicate with SQL server directly once the correct ODBC
drivers are installed and configured.

Re: MI-L Docking Toolbars Automatically

2004-11-28 Thread Stephen Chan
Sorry I could not reply ewarlier. Was in Darwin and had no access to
the library of apps that I have created over the past few years.

Try out this app. Freshly uploaded.

http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/620

I created it just under a year ago. You can manually save the
positions of each buttonpad and apply them whenever you want. This
includes buttonpads created from other apps. It will also execute
when the app is first run.

Hmmm.
I stuffed up with the template ini file I uploaded. Edit files option
does not work. Anyone know how I can upload an updated .zip My app
will work... however it'll just apply my preferred toolbar settings
with the current ini file. Just change the second line from a 1 to a
0 so it does not autoload on startup.

 Subject: MI-L Docking Toolbars Automatically

 Hi Everyone,

I am hoping someone can explain this one. I have MapInfo Pro 7.8 set to dock
all the toolbars upon openning (i.e. in Options--Toolbars, I have unchecked
the float check box for ALL toolbars). However, I still have one that always
loads up floating. When I check the Options--Toolbars, both the float
checkbox is checked again. I uncheck this, check the box Save as Default,
and try again. It still comes up as float.

There must be something I am missing. Such a small problem and it is driving
me nuts. Maybe I'm sleep deprived.

 Any ideas out there.

 Thanks in advance,
 Don Mitchell
