Re: [MI-L] feature wish list
Further to Richards observation, I also agree that MapInfo should provide the MapInfo-L community with their proposed plans for MapInfo, especially since myself (and others) decided to subscribe to the annual maintenance program primarily because of "the imminent arrival of Grande". One of the key "selling pitches" (though not in an overt way) used at a user group meeting in June (or so) 2005, was that "users on the maintenance plan would receive a beta version of Grande later in the year". Of course that didn't eventuate, but was one of my main reasons for my upgrading to the current release at that user group and then joining the annual maintenance plan. As with other comments on the list, I would like to see some significant changes to the product, especially in the area of producing professional cartographic output, with minimal output. Encom's Discover (an add-on for MapInfo) has certainly made life a lot easier with its Scaled Output, Legend creation and numerous text utilities, mainly because of a series of excellent descriptive dialog boxes with pulldowns that allow the user to achieve a good result. Although I have not used it, I have heard from fellow GIS'ers that ArcGIS map production capabilities are absolutely fantastic certainly looking at the annual ESRI Map book that is produced speaks for itself. My MapInfo 9.0 feature list would include the following: - 7 parameter transformation for Australia GDA94 (3 parameter just doesn't cut it) - improved text labelling - improved scaled output functionality (including overlay grids, titleblocks and company logos) - fixing the "bug" of having a layer close or browser close when doing a Table > Maintenance operation - fixing the new 8.5 "zoom to objects extent" when doing a copy/paste operation (a real bugger with text labels) - remember several "previous views" that you can navigate back through (not just the current one-only) - if editing several layers at once, an easy method to change editable and selectable layers (maybe mouse control functionality?) - expanding the 256 colour palette to one where you can easily define additional colour schemes and have 512, 1024 colours ... - add the ability to bring across ArcGIS polygon colours (it can be done as one fellow in Queensland has written a program that does it and sells it for about $ 200 Australian) - better table update functionality so that if you are doing numerous queries and table updates, you don't accidentally overwrite the master data (something Data Assistant does quite well ... yes I know, a plug for my own MapInfo add-on) - when writing an expression for labelling or thematic mapping, offer a function to save the expression (currently have to copy and paste to/from a Wordpad document) - implement significantly better error handing functionality when writing SQL queries or label expressions so that the obscure "Syntax Error - Please correct" message does not appear. For the average user, this message doesn't tell them what to fix. Again third party add-ons such as Discover and Data Assistant offer behind the scenes data validation as the expression is being constructed. - remove the comma which appears in columns defined as small integer or integer (at least have it as a preference to be set of not) - remove the useless error message when creating points that occurs when you pulldown the X-column, and the same column is listed (by default) for the Y-column. This occurs because MapInfo displays the first two numeric columns it encounters in a table. However if the first numeric column contains Sample numbers and the second numeric column contains Longitude it ticks me off to no end to change Sample numbers to Longitude (which by default sits in the Y-column) and have MapInfo ask "Use same column for X and Y field" and then change the Y column anyway because if you click No, it boots you out and expects you to change the Y value first. Anyway, enough rambling for a Sunday arvo ... time to go to the local pub for a brewski. Cheers, Bill = I commend all of the entusiasm, but let's get real. [MI-L] MI-L Scroll wheel mouse reversal
Today I was giving a MapInfo training course to a group of "Vulcan" users. One of them noticed that the operation of the scroll wheel on the mouse (for zoom in and out in MapInfo ) was reversed to the same zoom operation when used in Vulcan. I suspect that the mouse scroll wheel operation is probably hard-coded in MapInfo, but in case it isn't, does someone know what setting to "tweak" to reverse it's operation in MapInfo? [MI-L] Re: MI 8.5 Copy/Paste issue
I also agree that these changes should be "optionally set" via the Preferences dialog. Today I was editing a map and had to add a few text labels. I did my typical Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V (to copy / paste the label so that I could edit the copy and move it to a new position). However, upon pasting, the Mapper Window zoomed to the extent of the label. Very annoying as I was originally working at a good enough zoom level to select labels for working on. Sure I could then choose Map > Previous View, but it's a bugger. Bill - Original Message - From: Bonwick, Vicky To: mapinfo-l@lists.directionsmag.com Sent: Wednesday, August 23, 2006 6:59 AM Subject: RE: [MI-L] SUMMARY: MI 8.5 Copy/Paste issue Derek, Some feedback as requested: 1) You must definitely provide an option for the user to choose NOT to zoom during a "Query>Find Selection". This would be best as a user set preference and I would recommend it is 'off' by default. It worries me that you mentioned "It is unclear why it had been done this way". Those of us who use MapInfo for cartographic work (map production) understand extremely well why it was done this way but that seems to have been lost within MapInfo corp. The basic reason is we need to preserve scale! Don't be guided by how you think we should use MapInfo but how it is actually used out there in the real world. 2) I see no reason to include a preference to choose to pan or not in a "Query>Find Selection" operation. That's the very reason we use this facility - of course it should pan automatically. I'll choose whether to zoom to it once I get to it. This pan facility is what allows us to rapidly produce many different maps using a layer of boxes as an index. 3) Copy/paste - I'd prefer it was just that, no other functions forced on the user. We can always perform a "Query>Find Selection" or Ctrl A for fast access if we want. If necessary a separate preference for copy/paste to zoom/pan or not could be included if other feedback suggested it. This preference needs to be independent of any preferences for "Query>Find Selection". The whole copy/paste/pan/zoom issue is a much more minor issue as generally copy/paste happens duing data maintenance operations where scaling is generally less important. "Query>Find Selection" often happens during map production operations, hence the importance of preserving scale. The bottom line is there must be a facility allowing the user to use "Query>Find Selection" without changing the scale/zoom of the affected map windows. Your suggestion of removing the new preferences from the registry sounds good - I can't wait a year before I can efficiently produce scaled maps. Thankyou for requesting feedback! Some of you have also discovered that Copy/Paste has done a Find Selection for many versions, and this functionality has picked up the change made to Find Selection. The change itself relates to how we treated single objects. In the case of single object selections and Find Selection, previous to MI Pro 8.5, we performed a pan operation but not a zoom. It is unclear why it had been done this way. One thing we do know is that there is no spatial reference to provide a zoom for a single point object. The fact that find selection did not work for single objects became a bug in MI Pro 8.5, and was "fixed". Instead of the single object check, now there is a check to see if the MBR of the selection is not empty. So, we will pan for point objects or certain other cases, such as a selection containing multiple coincident points. For all other cases, we will pan and zoom. I think this fix is valid, since it makes the Find Selection command more consistent. But, we understand your pain and we would like to do something to address this issue. What we are leaning towards is a preference, or perhaps a few preferences. Concerning how this would look, we would like your feedback. Here are some options, but please feel free to provide others: Should we provide a preference to not perform a Find Selection during the copy/paste operation? Should we provide a preference t

Some of the classes in the legend have quite long names and in resizing the legend window I noticed that some of the text appears to be artificially cut off (in this case at least half of one word on one line and oddly half a character on another). On double clicking the legend box there is an option called Fill Frame With Contents, which when unchecked shrinks the displayed legend window down to a bounding box which perfectly masks the missing sections of the legend text. However when checked it opens up the window to its user defined extents, but still truncates the text to the limits of the box. So, my question ... can anyone suggest how I can get the missing text to display (ie can I or how do I change the dimensions of the bounding box within the legend layout window? Re: [MI-L] Bringing in a .shp file
Hi Tammy, Further to what Mike just suggested, you could also go to Tools > Universal Translator > Universal Translator and fill in the dialog box. The difference between the two methods is that with File > Open, you can only view the file, whereas the Universal Translator "breaks the link" to the original SHP file and creates a new copy in native MapInfo format. The advantage this way is that you can edit the table, update data in the Browser, etc. Note though that both methods will not bring across any colours associated with the polygons. There is a company in Queensland that has a third party MBX that will do this, but I can't remember their details. Re: [MI-L] Enclose function.
Robert, One "gotcha" is that the Enclose function will create polygons from your polylines BUT the polylines remain in the table. You then have to select all polylines, delete them and pack your table. Also note that if your line work is not 100% clean and snapped to nodes, that polyline may be overlooked and you end up with a larger polygon. I actually go through the following (labourious) processes to create polygons from polylines: 1) Digitise all polylines 2) I use Discover's "Auto-Polygonise" function to clean the line work - identify misclosures that I manually correct. 3) I then save a copy of my polylines to a new table "Polyline Backup" 4) I run the Enclose function to create polygons as no fill, single black border. At this stage I DO NOT save the table. 5) Then I select all polylines from the table and press delete. 6) I open my polyline backup table and position it BELOW the polygon table in Layer Control. I set the display override for the polyline table to red line, double thickness. 7) I then carefully examine the Mapper Window and note any areas where a polygon may not have been created. 8) If some polygons have been missed, I REVERT the polygon table, make changes and repeat steps 4 - 7 9) Once satisfied with the outcome, I PACK the polygon table. It is probably quite a round-about way of doing things, but I've found this gives me the best result. I've used the following SQL in the MapBasic Window Select * from KGH_Patients Where Unique_ID NOT IN (select Unique_ID from Kelowna_Patients) and the operation seems to suspend every time, so I have to close down the program and start again (I gave it up to 10 minutes) Any thoughts? Re: [MI-L] Script gets slower and slower after each run
Title: Script gets slower and slower after each run Hi Jorge, You are probably running into a similar problem I experienced late last year in that the \TEMP folder is not cleaned up by Mapinfo automatically. The crux of my solution that I posted on 17/1/2006 is: I went into my C:\Documents and Settings\William Donaldson\Local Settings\Temp\ subdirectory and found the following temp files:~Map.tmp to ~Map.tmp inclusive, a total of 10,000 temp files (a result of two years worth of work on the computer)! So I deleted all of them and presto, MapInfo is working perfectly! I'd suggest that (with MapInfo closed) you delete all similar files and see if that solves your problem. Please advise the list if my suggestion works, as I personally think that this is a bug that should be fixed in MapInfo (in that these files should be automatically deleted when you exit the program each day). It is naturally a bit slow. But what puzzles me is that each time I run it with the same set of objects it gets slower and slower, taking around twice as before on each run If I close and restart MapInfo and run the tool it runs fast again. I assume that MapInfo does all memory cleaning operations after an End Program statement. And the script doesn't use that much memory while running anyway, it's mostly CPU Any idea of what might be causing this progressive slow down? [MI-L] MI-L Graphics Card Query
Title: RE - ERROR MESSAGE I am considering upgrading my system to an AMD 4400 X2 and also purchase a separate graphics card. As I often use MapInfo with raster images of 200 Meg size, are there any recommendations on a graphics card. Note that it should use the new PCI Express connector and NOT the older AGP connector. Also, is MapInfo optimised for use with a Quadro or FireFl graphics card? Or would a consumer-level card such as one of the GeForce give similar results? Alternatively how about a SLI configuration using two identical cards? Thanks for any suggestions. Re: [MI-L] MapInfo hung up
I'd like to pass on a thousand congratulations to Peter Horsbøll Møller! As some of you may recall, two months ago I asked for help regarding the fact that MapInfo would suddenly no longer open workspaces that contained a Layout Window (it got to the point of opening the Layout Window and hung), and if I tried to edit a layer, MapInfo hung. I was at my wits end, and after several helpful replies from others, decided that the only way to fix the problem was to reformat the hard drive and re-install everything. Luckily however, I did not do it, and then went on vacation for six weeks. Upon my return (and unpteen MapInfo-L messages in the Inbox!) I noticed a reply Peter gave to Dewen Hou regarding MapInfo hanging under different circumstances (Post attached below). I thus went into my C:\Documents and Settings\William Donaldson\Local Settings\Temp\ subdirectory and found the following temp files: ~Map.tmp to ~Map.tmp inclusive, a total of 10,000 temp files (a result of two years worth of work on the computer)! So I deleted all of them and presto, MapInfo is working perfectly! So many thanks again Peter! As an aside, MapInfo Corp may want to look into some sort of routine to automatically delete these temp files so the problem doesn't happen to others (unless there is a method already that I don't know about). The list is great ... all the best to everyone for 2006. [MI-L] MI-L MapInfo can't open workspaces
Thanks to all who have responded with helpful advice to date - Phil Waight, Vinesh Govind, Peter Horsboll Moller, Julian Parker and Laure Dessemontet. Unfortunately all of your tips are not working. In a nutshell: 1) My TAB files have not changed 2) Choosing a different Windows default printer does not work 3) Taking the printer settings out of a workspace does not work 4) Disabling "Load Printer Settings" under "Preferences" does not work 5) No raster images are present in the workspaces I am trying to open. Phil Waight suggested using a workspace "step execute" program whicgh I realised my Discover 7.0 contains. I ran it, loading various workspaces step-by-step and the system always hangs when it comes to a "Generate or Populate Layout Window" command (Create Rect statement or Layout Position statement). I have also now tried running a Scaled Output from Discover and the program also hangs when it comes time to draw the Layout Window. Thinking back, the only software I installed this week (workspaces worked fine last week) were: 1) Google Earth update 2) MapInfo Google Earth Link Utility (no uninstalled, but still no difference to workspace opening) 3) Norton AntiVirus installed a "Sober worm" protection patch 4) Windows installed an automatic patch update. Pounds to Peanuts says that something has been installed which is causing these problems, even though I run Norton Internet Security, with auto-updates enabled. I'll probably wait until the weekend as I have now setup a laptop that I can use in the interim, (and I may get some more ideas to trial) but I'm afraid my finger may have to hit the "Format C:" button! Hi Laure, Thanks for your tips, but I've tried waiting (up to 10 minutes) and also going to Options > Preferences and turning off the option to "Restore Printer Information from Workspaces". My printer types and settings have not been touched for months. All to no avail! Does anyone else have ideas? It could be a change of printer, or printer settings, as that information is embeded in workspaces. If it has to look for another or a new printer, it can take ages to open. The only thing you can do is either wait, change the printer in MI and re-save the workspace or open the workspace in Word and change the printer path and name at the end of the document... Re: MI-L Autonode irritation
Stephen, I only received two replies ... yours and Peter's. My snap tolerance was set to 5 and the node tolerance set to 10. I have tried experimenting around without a satisfactory solution. A node tolerance of 10 seems to be ideal; any less and you get too many nodes and any more you start to "cut corners". Peter's suggestion of processing afterwards with the "Thin" function gives some good results, but again at sharp corners, results are not ideal. I suppose what is really required, and MapInfo may like to consider it, is some sort of Autonode entry algorithm that minimises hand movement errors. The algorithm would probably consider the map window projection, the scale being digitised, the pen / mouse drawing speed and calculate an expected pen / mouse buffer radius that the next point is accepted within??? The other option of course is just practise, practise, practise! Here was my answer I emailed to Bill MapInfo v8.0 also supports orthogonal polylines and polygons. Holding the CTRL key down while drawing a polyline / polygon allows you to draw a line angled at 45deg increments from the previous slope. As long as you have drawn two nodes to indicate the direction in which you would like to continue drawing a straight line you can use this feature to assist you in continuing the straight line. You may also want to consider the autonode tolerance found in Options > Preferences > Map Window. Please note that snap/autotrace feature must not be activated as the Shift and Ctrl keys have different functions when they snap/ tracing is used (as you probably already knew) - Steve On 10/27/05, Peter Horsbøll Møller <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Bill, > > Nice idea with the scotch. Re: MI-L Problem while importing MIF file
Ali, I suspect that your text is coming in as a "white" colour and thus you do not see it. I'd change the text colour in the following manner. Once your MIF file has been imported, execute the following SQL (in the "where" clause) str$(obj) = "text" This will select all text objects. Then make the layer editable, click on the Text Style icon (on the drawing toolpad) and choose a colour for the text. The text will then be visible, and you should then save the table. Re: MI-L On-screen digitiser for MapInfo- what kind?
Further to my post earlier today, I've had a few emails directed to me that I thought I should respond to, but that may interest others in the group. 1) Richard Nilsson advised me that I can remap the workable area of the tablet (vis-vis my comment of "About the only drawback I have is that I should have probably bought the smaller 4 X 5 version (so that I don't have to move the pen as far to access the MapInfo menu bar)." This can be achieved by going into the Wacom Tablet Properties program and clicking on the "Mapping" tab. You can then define either the tablet area or screen area for only a portion of the tablet. 2) A few people asked where I purchased it and the price. What follows is applicable for Australian readers. Once I decided on the tablet I wanted, I did a price comparison using http://www.staticice.com.au/ and searched for Wacom Intuos3 6 X 8 tablet. I bought mine from http://www.bozcorptech.com.au at a base rate of AUD $ 425 + shipping + credit card fees. However I just did another search and see that it can now be bought for even cheaper (AUD $ 391) from other outfits! As an aside, if I am going to purchase any computer "bits" (or toys as my wife calls them), I always do a comparison shop using this site. I'm sure similar ones exist for users in other parts of the world and a search in Google would probably list them. 3) I am running it with MapInfo 8.0, but as the tablet acts just like a mouse, I would assume that it will work with any version of MapInfo. It certainly works with Windows 2000, is great with Word (especially the eraser function at the end of the pen), and also Paintshop Pro. 4) Someone also asked if "the smaller 4 X 5 size would likely be annoying by having to reposition the pen every time one runs off the edge when digitising?". I don't think this would be an issue as the actual workable tablet area is mapped 1:1 to your monitor screen. As such, you cannot "run off the edge while digitising" ... if you are digitising something that continues off the edge of the screen, as you move the pen (or even regular mouse in MapInfo), the screen automatically pans to this area. I've obviously stirred people's interest in this new technology. I'd be interested in hearing how others find using this method of input should they decide to migrate across. Many thanks to all who have contacted me with comments, advice and queries. MI-L Followup to "On-screen digitiser for MapInfo- what kind?"
About a month ago, Bob Hudson posted a query regarding an on-screen digitiser for use with MapInfo. Christiane Roh replied that he might like to investigate a digitising tablet or pen. At the time, I was (and still am) in the midst of digitising several geological field maps. I was finding that I could only do about 4 hours per day (with significant breaks between) because I seemed to be developing "mouse hand" aka RSI. Anyway, after a bit of research, I decided to purchase a Wacom Intuos3 6 X 8 graphics tablet. After several stuff-ups with one supplier, and eventually going with another, I received it yesterday. I have only used it for maybe 3 hours so far, but would highly recommend it to anyone doing lots of digitising. The setup was easy, the pen stylus replicates the mouse movements (but with better precision) and overall use for digitising in MapInfo has me converted! The digitising pad area is mapped one-to-one to the cursor position on the screen. Also, you can "toss away" your mouse and use the pad in all applications - which I intend to do. About the only drawback I have is that I should have probably bought the smaller 4 X 5 version (so that I don't have to move the pen as far to access the MapInfo menu bar). Otherwise it is great and the speed button strips along the top are easily configured to common keystrokes. I have already remapped one to the "Backspace" key so while digitising I can easily delete a node while in the midst of drawing a polyline or polygon. I have tried the AutoNode feature (that came in version 8.0), but need a some more practise! However, I can see that once I master AutoNodes, I'll really be away to the races! Regards, Bill PS. I guess it is a matter of personal preference, but (in the past) I have tried digitising with a map taped on a digitising board, but now always scan all maps, register them and do on-screen digitising. - List hosting provided by Directions Magazine | www.directionsmag.com | To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message number: 18451
MI-L Dual CPU Question for the Hardware Types
My current system is a Pentium 4, Intel 2.4 Ghz processor with 2Gb RAM. Today I was doing some intensive raster graphical processing (saving a 200 Mb file merged sets of files from Global Mapper) and wanted to use MapInfo to do some other work, but had to wait 2 or 3 minutes for MapInfo to start (as resources were tied up in the file save)! I've been following the developments of, and release of dual core processors. It occurred to me that maybe now I should upgrade the motherboard and processor to possibly a dual core model (maybe even with hyperthreading?). But I was wondering, will the processor (and BIOS, I assume) automatically recognise when a second application starts and assign resources accordingly? Or do you need third party (I would assume Windows drivers) to enable this processing? I have been reading about the problems of Windows 64 bit applications (and the lack of software for these platforms), and basically wonder if this applies to running a dual core processor. Also, which one (AMD or Intel, in this enviroment) is the better one to go with? Most magazines say AMD, but I've also heard that Windows (or other programs) "slow down applications" on AMD processors. Thanks in advance for any comment or thoughts. - List hosting provided by Directions Magazine | www.directionsmag.com | To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message number: 18091

MI-L : Cartographic Design Principles Requested
Even though I have undergone formal GIS training (MAppSC GIS) and have used MapInfo for over 10 years, I have not really investigated or been taught basic catographic principles. What books and / or websites would people recommend dealing with catographic layout / "niceties" / colours / text sizes, etc for presentation purposes. In particular, I am interested in design principles when preparing maps at various scales for output (A0 to A4) and also preparing JPEG's in MapInfo (in the visual sense mind you) for insertion to Powerpoint slides. I sometimes spend up to 30 minutes, playing with various line colours, against an underlying (varying) polygon colour and tackling varying text sizes for various areas of a map ... it would nice to learn about and then implement standards so that the maps look just that "bit more professional". Also, are there any country polygon datasets available that "range the colours" for elevation. I'm not interested in anything "raster", but I could see a use for polygons with a nice gradational range of elevations. Many thanks for all your comments. I will sum. Re: MI-L : The Ghost Lines of 8.0
Hi Jorge, You are right. This is the first time I've encountered this in 10+ years of MapInfo work! The base table that I am digitising into is in a UTM Zone, while the Mapper Window is set to Long/Lat (WGS84). Arrr!!! Many thanks, Bill = - Original Message - From: "Jorge Gil" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Data Directions" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2005 9:26 PM Subject: RE: MI-L : The Ghost Lines of 8.0 Bill, I suspect that this problem occurs (not only in MapInfo 8.0) because the session projection is different from the table's projection. To fix this you have to set the session projection before any transformation: - If you always use the same projection system the best is to set it in "Options > Preferences... > Map Window... > Session Projection" - If you need to set it occasionally then: 1. identify the CoorSys code for the table's projection by typing in the MapBasic window: Print TableInfo("myTable",29) where myTable is the object's table name. This prints the code in the message window 2. set the session projection by typing in the MapBasic window: Set "myCoordSys" where myCoordSys is the output of the previous step Any transformation that you do to an object when the two projection systems are different causes this behaviour because the coordinates read by MapInfo are "wrong". Even if you update a column with an object's coordinates extracted with ObjectInfo() the coordinates read will be those for the session projection! It's very annoying that when you're editing a table the session doesn't simply default to that table's projection, instead the session projection defaults to whatever is set in the preferences. Hi Lars (and others), I only thought of this idea after reading an article on the Toms Hardware Guide website about installing Windows XP on a USB flash drive. If interested, the article is at: http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20050909/index.html But yes, it sounds like it may fall in the "too hard" category. MI-L : MapInfo on a USB Flash Drive?
Is it possible to load and run MapInfo from a USB flash drive? The reason I ask is because I'll be travelling overseas for five weeks (in a few months) and would prefer to just take a USB drive loaded with a working version of MapInfo and my important client data, rather than lugging around a 3 kg laptop. That way, I could check my emails and attend to any client requests on the road. Would there might be issues relating to the Windows OS that the drive is plugged into? Any thoughts, comments or experiences in this area? Re: MI-L MapInfo Pro V8 Performance
Ian, I suspect that it may be something within the raster image that is causing the slowdown, rather than MapInfo. I had a similar problem with a raster image when I used version 7.8. The image was a 2 Meg JPEG and took about one minute to open, rather than a few seconds as all others did. In the end, I opened the JPEG in Paintshop Pro, and saved it as a new JPEG file. Then the new image opened within a few seconds within MapInfo. I should add that I received the image from a third party who may have scanned the image or used another image program, and quite possibly that scanner software or image program does not create 100% accurate JPEG-definition files (and thus the slowdown in MapInfo). Hopefully this "save to a new JPEG" trick may work for you too! Re: MI-L Building Road Polygons
Hi Ian, Could you possibly do it like this? Select all the road centrelines, make the Cosmetic Layer ediatble and then use Objects > Buffer (which would create road buffers in the Cosmetic Layer). To ensure that the road buffers will touch the property polygons, make the buffers an exorbitant size, maybe 20 metre wide either side of the road centreline. Then save the Cosmetic objects to a new layer, called Roads. Make Roads editable, select all Roads and choose Objects > Set Target. Then select all property polygons and choose Objects > Erase. This should leave you with roads touching property polygons. Note that you may want to examine the Roads layer on its own to ensure that there aren't any spurious fragments left over from the Erase function. Re: MI-L More Version 8.0 Workspace Woes
Further to Julian's and Michael's posts about workspace problems in version 8.0, I've come across another: I get a bunch of "No end quote on string constant" errors when trying to open a version 8.0 created workspace. Checking it with a text editor shows that after the "Open Table" statements, MapInfo is inserting "Add Column" statements and populating it with values from my table (Note that the column already exists and has these values!). In some instances, it has stuffed up the quotes as follows: Add Column "Meekatharra_Project" (Expr1 Char (50)) Values "P 51/1808 May 12","M 51/504 September 1","M 51/521 December 6","P 51/1764 July 7","P 51/1809 March 10","P 51/1808 Anyway, the point is, these "Add Column" statements are not necessary, were not present in previous versions of my workspace, and just add gobbly-gook to the workspace file. Needless to say, until a patch is available from MapInfo, I have to manually delete these lines. Then my workspace opens as usual. Regards, Bill
MI-L ECW image errors and MapInfo 8.0
I am wondering if this is a bug in MapInfo 8.0 and if anyone else gets it. When I try to open an ECW image using Mapimagery, I get the following messages: "Error opening view into into ECW file: C:\Data\SJ5502.ECW (ECW error)" followed by: "Error getting view into ECW file: "C:\Data\SJ5502.ECW (Queue node creation failed)" The image then opens and I can use it. If I save the image to a workspace and then open the workspace, the same messages occurs again. Re: MI-L MapInfo vs. Manifold -> .NET
Hi Ian, I'd have thought that MapInfo would be monitoring this list and answer questions like this With the Manifold list, the Manifold team seems to be in there furthering development by responding to list queries ... Anyway, from a user group meeting a week ago, we were told by the MapInfo rep that version 8 will be shipped later this month. He also showed a screen capture of a prototype .NET MI that looked a bit like ArcView with the layer control docked to the left side of the screen and a few other changes on the screen. Apparently MI will continue development and upgrade releases of the current version of MapInfo / MapBasic for the next 12 - 18 months. But in the next six months, they will release a Beta .NET version for users to trial and send feedback to them, with the goal of doing a .NET release early next year. If you are on the maintenance plan, you'll continue to receive your upgrades of current versions, but will also be able to get the new .NET versions. The idea being that once the majority are comfortable with .NET they'll switch off development of the current MapInfo/MapBasic combination. Re: MI-L Registering an Image in MI 7.5
Hugh, It sounds like you are doing the correct thing by using the four corner points. I've had this happen once or twice, and suggest the following: I suspect that you may be entering one corner value twice and thus MapInfo is giving the error. Examine your map X and Y that you have entered for each point ... if they form a perfect rectangle, you should have two identical pairs of X and Y values (but obviously different for each corner). Alternatively, make sure that you have chosen the correct projection and aren't trying to map UTM coords to a long/lat projection. Hope this helps! MI-L Off-topic: ArcPad, Leadtek GPS CF Card and IPAC 4700
Sorry for the off-topic post, but I'm not sure where to "Google"! I recently purchased an IPAC 4700 PDA and the Destinator software for Australia (produced by MapInfo). The Destinator was bundled with a Leadtek 9534 CF card. Tonight I downloaded the evaluation version of ArcPad and am trying to get it to work (the reason being that ArcPad seems fairly comprehensive and I can always translate the data for use in MapInfo). The IPAC works perfectly well with Destinator, using COM Port 6 and Baud 4800. The same settings also work with WinFast Navigator (which I downloaded from the Leadtek website). In ArcPad, I have used the same port and baud settings, but ArcPad reports that a GPS unit has not been detected and to "Please check your configuration" (or something along those lines). Any ideas? MI-L Sum of Solutions for "Layout Gremlins"
Hi all, I received a number of helpful replies regarding my query yesterday about numerous blank A4 pages openingt in a Layout Window. I followed the solution provided by Tim Nuteson (and similarly by Jason McMahan), which solved the problem: "There is probably some object that got mistakenly placed way out there, causing the layout to grow to accommodate it. Go into the layout in MI, select everything that should be there (ie. on the first page), and then invert your selection. If, after inverting, there is something selected, delete it and save the workspace." I wasn't able to find out what was selected after inverting, but it did the trick anyway. Other suggestions were (that I didn't try): Martin Higham: "You'll need to delve into the workspace file and check the 1) Layout statement - which defines the height and width of the layout window; 2) Set Layout statement - which defines the extents; 3) Set Window statement - (after the layout statement) which defines the printer used for that layout." Mike Kilmore: "Make sure your laptop has the same printer driver as the client's machines, with identical settings. You may have to set each layout to another printer. Maybe set to printer, save the workspace, open it and set back to the original printer? Same MapInfo Pro version, too." Peter Horsbøll Møller : "You could check that the page setup actually is the correct paper size. Also try to open the workspace in a text editor and compare the Printer information with printer information from a workspace that behaves correctly And a third thing check if your MapInfo actually reads/writes the printer settings from/to the workspace" Thanks to all once again, Bill - List hosting provided by Directions Magazine | www.directionsmag.com | To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message number: 15638
MI-L Layout Gremlins
I am currently working at a client site "cleaning up" a number of workspaces. Due to security issues, they have transferred their complete workpsaces and all data to my laptop. Each workspace contains an A4-size layout on one page. But whenever the workspace opens, the Layout Window shows 320 across by 410 down A4 sheets of paper. Spooky to say the least! I then go to Layout > Options and change the "Layout Size" to 1 page wide by 1 page high and then view the entire layout (being as it should, the one page). I then immediately save the workspace (to hopefully overcome this problem). But if I close the workspace and open it again, I'm back to my Layout Window of 131,200 A4 pages, of which 131,199 are blank! Any ideas? Note that this problem only occurs for some of their workspaces, not all. I hould probably add that I'm running version 7.8. Re: MI-L tool to save objects as new files
Will, This is a function in Data Assistant, an evaluation version of which is available on our website. Your table is not restrictedd to regions ... it can be any spatial object in MapInfo. The table name is based on the unique value of the associated record. Assign a rowid if you want one object per table and use that as the unique column. To run it, open your table and select Data Assistant > Create Table > Extract Same Data. Complete details are in the online PDF manual that forms part of the installation. As an example, here are the first three lines in one of our MBX's: !App !Version 450 !Charset WindowsLatin1 Even though we created it in version 7.80, you can see how it has been "rolled back" to run on version 4.5 of MapInfo. Hi Jose, That is one of the features in our Data Assistant extension from MapInfo. Select the point of interest, and then select Data Assistant > Select Objects > Nearest Objects to Selected Objects. Enter the number of "closest objects" to select, and a new table will be created in order of closest objects increasing to those further away. Alternatively, if you want the table to list the actual distance from your selected point to all objects in the second table (listed in either ascending or descending order), select Data Assistant > Object Analysis > Distances to Object. MI-L Recovery of data from MapInfo transaction files
After recieving numerous solutions to my post the other day (thanks guys!) on MapInfo speed issues, I moved my data to a machine that had MapInfo 4.5 and the processing was noticeably faster. As an aside, the object model was changed in MapInfo 5.5 and later, to check for "bad data", which obviously slows things down now. This should maybe a "checkcbox option" in future versions for people who are processing files of hundreds of megabytes size. Anyway, back to this query. As luck would have it, 21 hours later, I recieved an error message which caused MapInfo to crash. I now have a set of the TMA, TDA and TIN files (of 2.2 Gb size!). Can I retrieve this portion of the processed data? I checked the list archives, and there were several queries on this, but no solution. MI-L : Speed processing issues
I am doing erase, combine and disaggregate operations on 1.3 Gb files, and needless to say, the processing times are ridiculous ... hours and hours .. ad infinitum! I have implemented the idea of using the MapBasic window and choosing to bypass transaction files by the process: set table YourTableName fastedit on undo off Aside from the impractical option of purchasing a Sun Sparc station, would it help if I was to increase my RAM or even processor speed? I am currently running on a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 with 512 Mb RAM. Or should I maybe consider doing these operations in another product that imports MID/MIF files? MI-L Polygon combination
I am wondering if there is a utility available that will combine identical polygons based on either an attribute or polygon colour. I have a table of soils (about 15000 polygons) that have been coloured red, yellow and green, corresponding to an attribute column of E, G and M. I would like to combine polygons where either the spatial or attribute characteristics are identical AND the polygon shares the same boundary with another polygon of identical characteristics. I cannot do a simple Object > Combine, because this will combine all like polygons. In the end I need to determine the areas of each spatially separate polygon groupings, but to reduce the data available, I would like to combine adjacent similar polygons. Any ideas? MI-L Editing a MapInfo file name
Someone sent me a file of Petroleum permits, in MapInfo format, exported from a third party application. When I try to open the file in MapInfo, it tells me that the table cannot be opened. So, in Explorer, I removed the second "dot" for each file listed above and tried again, but to no avail. I assume that the file name is referenced within the actual file ... my suspicion being the binary *.Map or *.Id tables (did not find anything in the *.Tab). Does anyone know how this can be fixed. MI-L Geological Labelleing
A client came up with a very interesting query just now Is there a mbx that will allow a user to type a geological code for a rock (suck as KKnnLo) where the second 'n' is a subscript and the 'o' is a superscript? He has a detailed geololic map to label with various super and subscripts, at varying positions throughout the text strings. If one is not available, I might consider writing one, if there is a enough interest. If you might be interested, please contact me directly, off list. Re: MI-L fixed length ascii
Jacques, What I do is to import the fixed length file into Access, and then immediately export out as a comma delimited text file. Its an OK process if I only have a few files to do, but wouldn't want to do it for a large number of files! Of course, you then have to delete the index column that Access assigns to a table, but I include that as part of processes in MapInfo when I then save the file to a native MapInfo table. Re: MI-L Radius Select (Solution via commercial product - Data Assistant)
Hi, You should download an evaluation copy of our MapInfo add-on, called Data Assistant. Data Assistant is a validation, querying and update utilty for MapInfo, utilising dialog boxes and pulldown menu items. In your instance (after DA installation), manually select a point from one table. Then you would select (from the MapInfo menu bar), Data Assistant > Object Analysis > Distances to Object, ensuring that you specify the second table to generate the report for. A report will be produced listing the distance of each point from your selected point. In the Browser Window that opens, you can then easily select the points of interest (and save if required). If you just want to say select the 15 points CLOSEST to the selected point, use Data Assistant > Select Objects > Nearest Objects to Selected Object (and enter the 'x' number of closest objects to select). Finally, if you want an new table created of nearest objects, with selected attributes from both tables, use Data Assistant > Quick Updates > Objects to Nearest Objects You can download a trial version from www.datadirections.com.au and click on the "Download" link. A 110 page PDF user manual (with detailed descriptions) will also be installed in the installation subdirectory. Please contact me if you have further queries. Re: MI-L Indexing a file taking a long time?
Josh, In MapInfo, anything you do with a non-native MapInfo table (such as Excel, ASCII TXT, etc) takes significantly longer to work with. This applies to joins, indexing, thematic mapping, etc. I'd recommend saving your Excel table as a native MapInfo table (via File > Save Copy As) and then using that table for your join. You should find a significant improvement in processing time. Also, make sure you then index the column to be used in the join, PRIOR to performing the join ... in both tables. MI-L Australian GDA94 projection issues
I have been having all sorts of problems with converting Australian projections between AGD84 and GDA94, both as spherical and cartesian coordinates. I have MapInfo data in AGD84. I go through the conversion process to GDA94 using various methods (FME some time ago, and now via ESRI ArcTools) and end up with a dataset projected in GDA94. However, when I overlay this data with the original AGD84 data, there is only about a 3 metre offset, not the 200 metre offset that it should be. But if during the conversion process, I set the coordinate system to GDA94 again, and then overlay the original GDA94 data with the converted data, there is the 200 metre (or so offset). In a nutshell, my processing steps are: 1.. From MapInfo, export the source AGD84 table as MID/MIF format. 2.. In ArcToolBox, convert the MIF to a Shapefile, assign the source projection (AGD84) and then specify the projection going to (GDA94). 3.. Go back to MapInfo (v7.5) and import the Shapefile, selecting GDA94 as the projection. This results in only a 3 metre offset. But at this stage, if I import the Shapefile and select AGD84 (the original projection), the 200 metre offset is apparent. Are there any ideas what is going on? Will sum. Many thanks, Bill

MI-L Data Animation
Frank, Your best bet is probably Scaled Vector Graphics (SVG). This is becoming an excellent way to view spatial data using only a browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, using a freely available plugin from Adobe or Corel. I've been a MapInfo user for over 10 years now, but have decided to move our business into the realm of SVG, as it allows non-GIS users an easy way to interact with spatial data, tailored to their requirements. To this end, we've written a utility to export the content of Mapper windows to SVG format, and then via Javascript programming (that we've written), users can filter the data, turn layers on and off, and also as you want, animate the data. We don't sell the conversion software, but use it to produce SVG web maps for our clients. If you'd like to find out more about SVG, see www.adobe.com/svg and if you'd like to pursue a solution from us, please contact me offlist. MI-L Overloading the MapInfo menu bar
I had a query from someone who was trying to run an MapInfo add-on (we'll call it Test.mbx) and was getting the following error: Warning 812: Test.mb: 237: Unknown error encountered. It turned out that they were also running two other add-ons, Discover and Map Imagery. I was able to solve the problem by having the user turn off one of the other applications so that the Test.mbx would run. If I then tried to fire up, say Discover, the error occurred again (this time referencing the Discover application), leading me to believe that there is a limit on the number of third-party applications that you can either have running in Mapinfo or appearing on the menu bar. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem (other than reducing the number of applications available from the MapInfo menu bar? Thanks in advance, Bill

MI-L MapInfo 7.5 Feature List
I'm a bit surprised that MapInfo hasn't posted this information to the list or on its website ... Anyway, there was a MapInfo User Group meeting in Perth, Australia, earlier today in which the new features of MapInfo 7.5 were detailed and listed in a handout. For the info of other listers, here are the new features: - web map service (WMS) client support allowing you to download maps from a MapInfo, Intergraph and ESRI WMS server into MapInfo Professional - improvements to the existing tools as well as new tools such as draw by a bearing and distance in metric units and a new move/offset tool - map printing to scale - better scaling when printing fill patterns - improvements to custom symbols including more colours, the ability to change symbol size and adding more custom symbols - mouse wheel functionality so that you can zoom in and out while drawing - adding buffer or voronoi information into a new table - rotating objects by entering an angle and using more rotation points - improvements to the Snap tool including larger crosshairs or a circle displaying the snap tolerance - Excel files greater than 32767 rows can be imported - tick mark to indicate the current window in the Window menu (not sure what this is) - creating points from character columns - geological symbol sets have been added (from Encom's Discover add-on) - raster display and processing performance improvements - additional projections and transformations - more menu shortcuts The release date (in Australia, which generally lags one month behind the US in past releases I've found) is slated for September 2003. MapInfo 8.0 .NET platform is tentatively slated for a (March?) 2004 release. One person also asked about the introduction of 3D .TAB files. The response from the MapInfo representative was that it was high on their list, but would not appear in MapInfo 7.5 or even 8.0, as MapInfo had decided that performance (aka speed) requirements were more important for users. If users want to see a feature they should contact their local rep or MapInfo ... if enough responses on an issue are received, it may appear in a future version. Re: MI-L What is Syntax for a Spatial Query?
Frank, If you don't want to go through the rigors of learning MapInfo SQL and encountering its many obscure error messages, you might be interested in our add-on to MapInfo, called Data Assistant, which is a query wizard, data validator and table updating utility. In regards to queries, there are several pre-defined "Quick Queries" whereby you use pulldown menus in a dialog box to select what is required. Behind the scenes data validation ensures that only valid data is returned. If you want to learn MapInfo SQL, the Query Wizard utility steps you through the process (again utilising behind the scenes data validation and pulldown menus) of building a SQL query. At the end of this process, if you are interested in learning MapInfo SQL, you can optionally choose to view your completed SQL statement. Complete details of all functions and an evaluation version is available for download from www.datadirections.com.au/GIS%20Software.htm As part of the installation process, a detailed 100+ page PDF user manual, with examples, is installed in the installation directory. Wih regards to your specific query, using Data Assistant, you would select Data Assistant > Select Objects > From Objects in 2nd Table. Note that it is not necessary to subset the polygon table, as pressing the "Filter" button will restrict the selection to only those polygons that meet the filter criteria. This eliminates data duplication. You could even go one step further and apply a filter to your point data too, at the same time, if required! Alternatively, if you want to do it with MapInfo alone, you would go to the SQL dialog box and enter: from tables: Point_Table, Polygon_Table_Subset where: Point_Table.obj intersects Polygon_Table_Subset.obj If you have any queries, please contact me directly. Re: MI-L CO-ORDINATE PROBLEM
Peter, Being a non-earth projection, I suspect that Bounds are applicable to your table (not the point objects). What you are describing occurs whenever you try to add objects outside the set bounds of a table. To rectify the problem, you need to increase your bounds. Do the following: >From the MapInfo menu bar, select Tools > Tool Manager. A list of MapBasic programs will be displayed in the resulting dialog box. Scroll through the list until you see "CoordSys Bounds Manager" and put a tick under the column "Loaded" and click OK. Next select Tools > CoordSys Bounds Manager > Check and Set Table Coordinate System Bounds. You can then increase your Y value as required and save the table with the updated bounds. MI-L Workspace Catalog
Data Directions announces the release of the latest MapInfo extension, Workspace Catalog. This application is extremely valuable for anybody who works with workspaces. One of the main benefits is if a user wants to see if a map exists for an area prior to creating a new one. For large organisations that have several thousand workspaces, the Workspace Catalog is a significant timesaver, in that pre-existing Layouts and/or maps can be easily identified, and modified if required, rather than re-creating a new Mapper or Layout Window from scratch. Workspace Catalog analyses workspaces contained in selected directories to determine the extents of Mapper Windows within the workspaces. These extents are recorded as polygons in a MapInfo table. The Workspace Catalog contains information on the subdirectory path, the workspace version number, the printer type, the MapInfo PaperSize, the date and time the workspace was created and last updated, and if the Layout contains a thematic map. All of these items can be coloured in a Mapper Window, with an associated Legend Window appearing. Once a Catalog has been created (or opened), other functionality provided within the Workspace Catalog utililty is available, including stored configuration information such as a default background map, hotlinks to external documents, catalog metadata, catalog summaries and filtering of data. A fully-functional evaluation version (limited to cataloguing 10 workspaces) is available for download from www.datadirections.com.au . If you have any queries, or comments for additional features, please email us. MI-L Re: MapBasic Arrays
Hi, Further to Jacques email, I believe you can do it with both dimensions being created dynamically. The following is a rework of how I handle an array normally, so it is in the same format as Jacques. The disclaimer is that this code is off the top of my head and I haven't actually tested this precise code, but you should get the idea. I know I should never take a short cut like that, but hopefully the disclaimer can bypass that :-) Type tRow colJ() as float end Type dim rowI() as tRow dim iRowCount as smallint dim iColoumnCount as smallint dim iIndex as smallint iRowCount = 3 iColCount = 2 redim rowI(iRowCount) for iIndex = 1 to iRowCount redim rowI(iIndex).ColJ(iColumnCount) next You now have a standard 3x2 rectangular matrix. A rectangular matrix is not always required, unless the requirement is mathematical. I normally build the columns required for the first "row", then increment the row array and build the columns required for the second "row". Doesn't really sound practical if only thinking about rows and columns, but it is very useful for storage of programatic data that is essentially like one to many to many. To date, I have only used 2D arrays, but theoretically it is not limited in the number of dimensions. I think the limitation would lie with the redim statement: redim rowI(iIndex).ColJ(iColumnCount)... Hope I got this right, and let me know if there's a problem. RE: MI-L Save Template limitations
Hi Chris, This is a function of MapInfo SQL. I'm not sure why it is tied to 256 characters ... possibly because it is tied to original DOS roots, or it becomes too hard to find syntax errors, given MapInfo's obscure syntax messages. The SQL dialog box is also rather pokey to work in for long SQL's. The only way around this is programmatically through MapBasic, and to this end, we've developed Data Assistant, the data validation, querying and table updating utility for MapInfo. From our tests, we can write SQL's to 630 characters. This is done through the Query Wizard. I invite you to download our utility Data Assistant (for MapInfo) at www.datadirections.com.au , install it, and select Data Assistant > Query Wizard > New. From there, it is just a matter of stepping through the dialog boxes to create your SQL. This utility will run for 50 sessions prior to a timeout. A detailed PDF manual and comprehensive help file is also part of the installation. If you have any queries, please contact me. I have a query that has 233 characters in the 'Select Columns' portion and it executes correctly. However when I save the query (Save Template) and reload it, it fails to execute. The reason for this is that MapInfo inserts numerous spaces into the string, causing it to exceed the 256 character limit. For example, my original query was ... RDSEGDAT.Road_name, RDSEGDAT.Rd_segmtno, ProspectFootpaths_2002.Side, RDSEGDAT.from, RDSEGDAT.to,. But after saving it and reloading the following is displayed... RDSEGDAT . Road_name , RDSEGDAT . Rd_segmtno , ProspectFootpaths_2002 . Side , RDSEGDAT . from , RDSEGDAT . to ,. MapInfo has inserted a space before every comma and before and after every dot, making this SQL useless. My questions are (particulary to MapInfo) why is there a 256 character limit on these fields and why are the unnecessary spaces added? Is there any fix to this? MI-L Aeronautical grids revisited
A few months ago, I posted a query on how to create aeronautical grids using MapInfo. These grids generally have a solid line along each degree, then five ticks (representing the minute interval), and each minute tick has 10 ticks representing a tenth of a minute. In the end, I wrote a little MapBasic program to generate a longitude/latitude listing of these coordinates, and then used Table > Create Points to create point objects. I represent the ticks using MapInfo compatible 3.0 symbols, the "+" symbol. This places a "+" symbol at each coordinate, which is great. However, there is now a new problem. The client doesn't want the map in typical N-S fashion. To save paper, he'd like it rotated at 45 degrees, thereby covering the area of interest with one sheet instead of three sheets. No problem ... I use the "Rotate Map Window" utility that is shipped with MapInfo. However, my "+" symbols don't rotate! And I suspect that it is because they are not true-type fonts. So I recreated the points, this time using the "+" symbol from the MapInfo Cartographic symbol library (which does allow rotation). But upon close examination (in the N-S aspect prior to then invoking the Rotate Map Window utility), I see that these symbols do not overlie exactly with my main longitude/latitude grid lines ... but the ones that can't rotate (the MapInfo compatible 3.0 symbols) do line up exactly! Ahh! Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do; either to somehow rotate the MapInfo compatible 3.0 symbols, or to get the MapInfo Cartographic symbols to line up exactly. Note that my rotation angles will not always be 45 degrees, so using the "X"" symbol is not an option. Many thanks in advance. MI-L Indexing query
I have searched the MapInfo manuals and knowledge base but cannot find an answer to the following: Is there an optimal (or maximum) number of indexes that can be applied to columns within a MapInfo table before their use is ineffective. I seem to recall a maximum of three indexes per table, but may be mistaken. If someone knows, could they please advise, along with the rationale for (or if necessary, formula to calculate) the answer. MI-L Coordsys and distances
Hi, I'm writing a mapbasic program to display the distance to objects in a browser window. The program issues a select statement which uses the distance function. My problem is this function uses the default Latitude/ Longitude coordinate system. I have tried issuing a 'Set Coordsys' statement within the program prior to the select statement. This changes the coordinate system for the mapbasic program but it appears the select statement uses the coordinate system of the session. Is there a way to change the session's coordinates? How can I report the distance with respect to coordinate system for the table of interest? I'm using MapInfo v7.0 with MapBasic v6.5. MI-L : Multi-band Landsat Image Problem
A client of mine has provided me with a CD containing 8 Landsat images, in BIL format. I cannot open them in MapInfo as they are multi-band images, and I get the error messages "Cannot process multi-band images. Raster engine unable to recognize image file format". Short of paying several thousand dollars for image analysis software (which is out of the question), is there a relatively inexpensive option to maybe convert the images to a TIF image (ideally with TFW associated file)? Or maybe someone has another solution for opening these multi-band images in MapInfo. Thank you in advance. RE: MI-L removing overlapping / intersecting objects
Niklas, This is a multi-step process using MapInfo whereby you need to select all objects intersecting using an attribute of 3 and then delete where appropriate. Next, you would have to locate all overlaps and then select those of attribute 3. This involves writing SQL statements. If you're not familiar with SQL or want to take a few short cuts you may like to use our product, Data Assistant. I'll outline the steps required and in parenthesis give the corresponding utility to use in Data Assistant. You can download Data Assistant for evaluation from our web site www.datadirections.com.au You get 50 usages of the fully-functional MBX prior to timeout. In addition, a detailed 91 page PDF User Manual is also installed. 1. Filter your current table, I'll call it TableA, to those with associated attribute=3. ('Data Assistant' > 'Quick Sort' > 'Filter-Sort Table'). Save this query result as a table, TableB. 2. Open TableB. 3. Select objects in TableB that intersect objects in TableA. ('Data Assistant' > 'Select Objects' > 'From Objects In 2nd Table') 4. For the current selection, select the corresponding records in TableA. ('Data Assistant' > 'Quick Queries' > 'Select Records Matching Data In 2nd Table'). Note: This assumes you have an ID column in your table. (If this doesn't exist you can create and populate an ID column by using 'Data Assistant ' > 'Quick Updates' > 'Using Row Number'.) 5. Delete the current selection contained in TableA. 6. Delete TableB using Table > Maintenance > Delete TableB as it refers to objects that no longer exist in the original table, TableA. 7. Perform an Objects > Check Regions and view the overlapping regions of all objects. Select objects with attribute = 3, and visually compare it to the overlapping regions displayed, deleting objects as they are found! (Use 'Data Assistant' > 'Data Validation' > 'Overlapping Objects' and save the result as a table, TableC. Then use 'Data Assistant' > 'Select Objects' > 'From Objects In 2nd Table' filtering TableA to objects with attribute = 3. Delete the current selection in TableA, and then save TableA.) 8. You can then pack TableA, if desired, but this will change RowId's which may or may not be an issue in your instance. If you have any additional queries about this process, or queries about Data Assistant, I'll be pleased to respond. RE: MI-L MI-L: Saving workspaces through mapbasic
Peter, Thanks for your solution. We too have just been struggling with this problem this evening for the past few hours. In our instance, we found that the "Unable to save workspace" error occured when the workspace contained a query result (temporary table). The "Save Workspace" command and "Run Menu Command 109" both work in MapBasic when only tables (and not queries) are open. Thanks for your help. Data Assistant presents the user with a series of pull down menus that have transparent data validation running in the background. The filter functionality is especially useful with the new Update Table features in version 2.1. Users can filter records, and update the master table in a simple dialog box rather than performing multiple actions with MapInfo functionality (SQL Select followed by a Table Update) to achieve the same result. All current users of Data Assistant qualify for, and received a free upgrade to version 2.1. For new users, there has been no change in the price, with a single licence priced at USD $ 195. Discounts apply for multiple licenses. An updated evaluation licence (for 50 uses) is available for download from www.datadirections.com.au . The installation also installs a 91 page User Manual (PDF format) and detailed online help. Note that if you installed the previous trial version of Data Assistant, you will need to email us the Red Code so that we can generate a new evaluation licence. MI-L Data Assistant correction for MapInfo 4.5 to 5.5 version users
Paul Middleton brought to our attention the fact that we had uploaded a version of Data Assistant to our website www.datadirections.com.au that required MapInfo version 6.0 or later. Data Assistant can run with MapInfo versions 4.5 and later. We have now made the minor correction and uploaded a new trial version to our website. Our apologies are extended to any MapInfo 4.5 to 5.5 users who downloaded the file and received a message stating that MapInfo 6.0 or later was required. We encourage you to try another download and rest assured it will work with your 4.5 to 5.5 versions of MapInfo. There is one feature that does require MapInfo 6.0 or later. It is in the Data Validation > Overlapping Objects module. A message indicating this requirement is presented to users if they are running earlier versions of MapInfo. MI-L Data Assistant for MapInfo
Data Directions ( www.datadirections.com.au ) is pleased to announce the release of Data Assistant for MapInfo. Data Assistant is a multipurpose data querying and data validation extension to MapInfo. It is comprised of four categories: the Query Wizard, Quick Queries, Select Objects and Data Validation. As you are probably aware, using MapInfo SQL can be a rather cumbersome, and error-prone process unless you are meticulous when entering the SQL details. If errors do occur, they are reported back to the user as cryptic messages such as "Found ',' while searching for From" or "Variable or field Min not defined". To the non-programming user, this sort of information can be quite frustrating; hence the development of the Query Wizard in Data Assistant. Now you can easily analyse your MapInfo data. The Query Wizard presents the user with a series of dialog boxes that enables the user to create a SQL query without errors. This is accomplished by validating all entries prior to allowing the user to proceed to the next screen. You are prompted each step of the way for the appropriate information. Data can be filtered easily since there are no syntax requirements for column values. It is all done for you. When filtering a text column, the current values in the column are displayed allowing for easy selection. In addition, filters (as well as queries) can be saved, ready for use in another query. A time saving function is the filter translator which allows you to copy a filter to another table. The filter translator opens a dialog box that allows the user to select a new table (and/or field if required) while maintaining the syntax of a filter. This is valuable when similar data is stored in many tables and you wish to apply the same filter to all those tables. Quick Queries are a set of predefined queries that allow a user to easily determine a column summary, area of polygons, length of lines and polylines, and count points in an area. The filter functionality has been applied to quick queries allowing a user to easily extract records that meet a certain criteria. An example use of the Calculate Area function might be to produce a list of residential zoning according to the "R" code by council district. Select Objects allows the user to quickly select objects through the use of the filter concept. Additionally you can select objects overlying objects from a second table, or overlying various buffers created from objects in a second table. Data Validation allows attribute and spatial data to be validated. You can locate records containing duplicate data in a specified column; locate records without data (i.e. zero for numerical fields, blanks for character fields, and records without associated objects). The data content in two tables can be compared to ensure referential integrity in a specified column in the tables. You can also highlight objects overlapping within a table. A single user licence costs USD $ 195 and discounts apply for additional licences. A two week trial version is available in the download section of our website, www.datadirections.com.au The trial version installs a detailed PDF user manual in the installation directory. A comprehensive help is also installed. In the newsletter section of our web site, the July newsletter illustrates a practical example of data validation using Data Assistant. We are quite happy to answer any queries relating to Data Assistant, and welcome any suggestions for additional Quick Queries.
