I think the fact that "View Source" is a famous web browser menu item is
poignant for this discussion, especially given the power of the
Firebug-style web developer modes of all the big browsers today.

I believe the very simplest and most reliable is ...

I think we ought to think in terms of addressable market, and for me with
that perspective the ranking is,

Sugarizer in a browser,

Sugarizer installed via packages for existing mobile systems,

Sugar/GNU in a VM (which I wonder could be ideally bundled with VM software
and presented as a "desktop app"),

Sugar/GNU on a stick,

Sugar installed via packages for existing GNU systems,

Sugarizer/Android preinstalled on hardware

Sugar/GNU preinstalled on hardware

Sugar/GNU preinstalled on rugged hardware

:D yes Ignacio I know you are I did a press release about you haha :D

my point is, not everybody wants the same thing out of facebook.
Personally, I like figurative art and I "like" fb pages on that topic. But
it doesn't matter what I like, what matters is what our target audience
likes. My point of view is that our primary target should be teachers.
Perhaps you or Lionel or others feel our primary target should be elsewhere
- developers or donors or school system education buyers. That's a strategy
and marketing discussion, and what it leads to is a marketing strategy to
reach the target. As I said I do think facebook will be key in the
marketing mix - traditional PR doesn't generate press coverage the way it
did five years ago.

As strange as it may sound, effective marketing comes from a rigorous
approach.

Samson... at the risk of repeating myself... who are the ads geared to?
What do the ads say? Is the objective to boost random traffic on facebook,
or traffic more likely to adopt or support Sugar?

Let's try an analogy. I think it would be great if we did a computer
program. Over a billion people use computer programs every day. We can do a
great computer program, and put it on line next week, and get users of our
program.

Do you see what I'm saying?

Hi Ignacio

are you ...?

* a donor interested in supporting a project to support financially?
* a developer interested in a project to volunteer with?
* a teacher interested in a classroom computer-based learning tool?
* a parent interested in a home setting computer-based learning tool?
* a cool guy interested in fun games?

My point is that the message would likely be different for each target. I'm
sure teachers like games too, but perhaps they also like humor, their cat,
weather reports, and educational technology... so our message should be
about our educational technology.

Thanks for this Samson

note that the format is xlsx, not xls, I had to rename the extension to

I'm aware that the numbers are very low. Once SL chooses its vision and

not really the whole sugarizer, probably its activities. because i was checking
up Facebook education category it seems like not much education app present. So
this is the perfect time to strike in the category. About the gaming we should
upload it differently. Sugarizer is a education software thanks to internet.org
which you can use to explore Facebook without internet.

I concur. The fb apps have an integrated browser and we could try pointing
to a web address from our fb page. We would need to test how well Sugarizer
works in their browser. I believe it's also possible to escape the fb
browser and call the device's native browser, but i don't know the details.

Smart marketing involves identifying a target with an objective, then
choosing a media channel to touch that target. It's tempting to go the
other way around and say "facebook is a heavyweight channel, so let's
concentrate there, and everybody likes games, so let's put up a game", but
for a workable strategy we need to first identify the target and objective,
verify the target's presence in media channels (facebook or others), choose
the best channel(s), then tailor the message to the target to achieve the
objective. Facebook has massive penetration and it's likely many people in
our target groups will be there. So we could certainly have separate
parallel facebook campaigns for recruitment (volunteers), donors
(resources), and teachers (adopters, prescriptors). To reach teachers, we
could decide to highlight the pedagogical qualities of some of our
Activities (Turtle Blocks, eToys), or we could prefer to present the Sugar
interface. In the first case a standalone facebook app could be a good
solution. In the second case a link to a Sugarizer instance would probably
make more sense. In both cases there should be a call to action to invite
teachers to learn more about the platform and its Activities.

Hi

You are probably more familiar than I am with the facebook free basics
fiasco. Facebook seeks to establish itself as a grand gateway to what the
internet can do, and the software freedom movement yearns to make Facebook
obsolete. (eg, see
https://www.softwarefreedom.org/news/2010/feb/10/highlights-eben-moglens-freedom-cloud-talk/
)

One of the ideas of Sugar is to raise awareness about the software freedom
movement, and as such, providing the full experience within the facebook
police-state playpark is an own-goal. We should reach people where they are
in the playpark and lead them out of it.

:)

Hi Dave,
I can see why you want to limit the app on facebook, but don't you think
that it would be better if everyone could have the full sugar/sugarizer
experience independent of where they are using it currently (facebook in
this case)? If it is technically not possible to run the entire sugarizer
app over there due to some limitations it is fine, but I would personally
like it if sugar/sugarizer offered as much as possible on facebook as well.
But then again, sugarizer itself has only a few activities as of now
compared to Sugar, so I guess it would be limited in that way anyways.

2016-04-07 Thread Dave Crossland
I think facebook app/game versions of sugar activities is smart marketing,
but I would suggest making them a little limited, to get people hooked on
them, and then telling people to upgrade to the main
http://server.sugarizer.org app to play the next level.

2016-04-07 Thread Sanchit Bansal
I can certainly help with directing a lot of traffic to our facebook page
as well as other social media accounts, I will start right away if
everyone's willing.

I propose to incorporate a social media feed on our website to increase the
interactivity here.

I am also working on the redesigning the website project from GSoC and I
would love you guys to give me feedback on this design I have thought of
for the main website: http://sanchitbansal.xyz/GSoC. This is just initial
idea, I will update a lot of stuff in coming days.

FWIW, there is a FB version of Turtle Blocks [1], but I never followed
through to get it "authorized". Justed need to add a little glue to the JS
code to enable it.
