I have not seen the Chernobyl series, so I can't comment on its accuracy.
My comment related to the reliability of Michael Shellenberger.

I did not say that he works directly for the nuclear industry. In fact, he
is much more useful to those companies than hired flacks, because he is a
true believer, an ideologically-driven anti-environmentalist who thinks
capitalism is the best of all possible worlds and that technology will
solve all environmental problems.

His organization claims to be funded by a few wealthy co-thinkers -- but it
doesn't say where those people got their money. It claims to be for clean
energy, the only form it actually promotes is nuclear.

In short, a dedicated supporter of nuclear power doesn't like the Chernobyl
series. Surprise.

The Forbes article criticizing the HBO series "Chernobyl" was written by
Michael Shellenberger.

He was one of the two founders of the Breakthrough Institute, which Monthly
Review accurately described as “the leading big money, anti-green,
pro-nuclear think tank in the United States, dedicated to propagandizing
capitalist technological-investment ‘solutions’ to climate change.”

He is a co-author of the "Ecomodernist Manifesto" and of "The Death of
Environmentalism."

He left Breakthrough in 2016 to work full-time as a publicist for and
promoter of the nuclear industry.

So it really isn't surprising that he doesn't like the show, or that
Forbes, which has proudly labelled itself "capitalist tool," would publish
it.

What can lobbyists do when science contradicts their political messages?

Some simply deny the science, as many conservatives do with climate change.

Others pretend to embrace the science, while ignoring or purging the
disagreeable content.

That’s what the Breakthrough Institute (BTI) is doing with one of the most

Thank you very much! Google tells me that "grobianism" refers to Saint
Grobian, the patron saint of vulgar and coarse people. (Who knew they had
their own saint?) So Ollman's translation of that as "crudity" is
reasonable, and more understandable to folks like me who might find the
reference obscure.

In "Dance of the Dialectic" page 77, Bertel Ollman quotes Marx:

"It is characteristic of the entire crudeness of 'common sense,' which
takes its rise from the 'full life' and does not cripple its natural
features by philosophy or other studies, that where it succeeds in seeing
a distinction it fails to see a unity, and where it sees a unity it fails
to see a distinction."

The reference Ollman gives is to the Marx-Engels-Werke, Vol 4 page 339. I
have been unable to find this passage in the English Marx Engels Works,
perhaps because it's a different translation.

Several other writers quote the same passage, but so far as I can tell,
they all reference Ollman as the source.

Can anyone help me locate the original passage, in English?

The election victory of the left-wing Syriza coalition in Greece has
spurred widespread comment and discussion. On the right, some commentators
warn of imminent catastrophe while others urge negotiations. On the left,
some hail it as huge step for anti-capitalism, some see it as positive but
express concerns, and some (inevitably, it seems) are already denouncing
it as a reformist betrayal-in-progress. We can be sure that there will be
much more discussion and debate as events unfold.

This article offers a perspective that has not yet received much
attention, identifying Syriza as part of a trend towards left-green
alliances across Europe.

How can Latin America go beyond ‘extractivism’?

In recent years, a number of important discussions have emerged among and
between environmentalist and solidarity activists. None has generated
quite as much heat as the debate over extractive industries, particularly
in South America.

Federico Fuentes, co-author of 'Latin America's Turbulent Transitions'
argues that simplistically framing all conflicts as between “extractivist”
governments and “anti-extractivist” critics, perpetuates a false
dichotomy, and distorts or even silences the voices of the majority of
those fighting the impacts of extractivism.

The origin of Rosa Luxemburg’s slogan ‘socialism or barbarism’

Historians have offered various explanations, none of which really work.
Tracing an important socialist slogan to its unexpected source.

I think I have solved a small puzzle in socialist history.

BARRY COMMONER AND THE GREAT ACCELERATION

by Ian Angus

http://climateandcapitalism.com/2014/06/29/barry-commoner-great-acceleration/

Long before today's scientists accepted the idea, socialist-ecologist
Barry Commoner argued that there had been a qualitative change in
humanity's relationship with nature in the years following World War
II ... and explained why it happened and what it means for our future.

“We know that something went wrong in the country after World War II,
for most of our serious pollution problems either began in the postwar
years or have greatly worsened since then.”
--Barry Commoner, 1971

“[The] first stage of the Anthropocene ended abruptly around 1945,
when the most rapid and pervasive shift in the human-environment
relationship began."
--Will Steffen, Paul J. Crutzen, John R. McNeill, 2007
