[MCN-L] VR headsets you don't need to strap on

2016-10-19 Thread Ed Rodley
Hive mind,

Have any of you come across any VR headsets that *don't* need to be
strapped on? We're looking at a couple of potential applications where we'd
consider VR in the galleries, but know that the throughput issues and
hygiene concerns around putting on a headset would get in the way. We are
looking for something that could a quicker experience, more akin to a
Google Cardboard, though built for use and abuse.

Any leads appreciated!

Thanks,
Ed

I would not expect there to be *any* extension this year. Given the

extend without cutting into our review time. Get it in on the 30th is my

 Yo All,

Does anyone have a list of handy apps that can turn a basic html page on
an iPad into a locked display app.
 I'm thinking kiosk-mode/lockdown thangs.

This is for a v. simple web page displaying content in a gallery with
the same web page also used on the live web. Any links on the open web,
should not work on the locked-down gallery display of the same page: no
swiping, no access to native OS shortcuts etc.

The main iPad buttons can be assumed to be physically inaccessible.

Happy to summarise to lists, or take direct offline private comments, etc

 Hi Ed,

Lately we?ve been leaning towards Planar touch screens, many of which
support Mac OS, either natively or with the help of Touch-Base drivers.

For example, the PT3285PW is nice, and with its continuous glass it
doesn?t need to be embedded in an enclosure to cover buttons or logos.

We?re using them in two different installations at the MFA, but I can?t
speak to their multi-touch support for Mac, since our interactives are
 only single-touch.
I think Elo and Canvys are offering similar models now.

Another point goes to Planar for having 2-day advance replacement.

[MCN-L] Any reccs on Mac OS-compatible touch screens?

2014-06-26 Thread Ed Rodley
Hey hive mind!

I'm looking for a decent Mac OS-compatible touchscreen monitor for an
upcoming exhibition. We've used Trolltouch modified iMacs in the past. but
we're not wedded to an all-in-one solution. All the screens I've looked at
make no mention of Mac compatibility. Anybody out have any luck? I like
the look and specs of 3M screens like the 3M? Multi-Touch Display M2167PW.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers,
Ed

[MCN-L] Any reccs on Mac OS-compatible touch screens?

2014-06-26 Thread Ed Rodley
Thanks, all! I'll take another look at the ELOs, as well as the 3Ms. We
don't need multitouch for this installation, but it'd be good to have that
capability for future purposes. Y'all rock!

Cheers,
Ed

Ed, are you specifically looking for multi-touch capabilities? How many
 touches?

 We use ELO Touchmonitors (
 http://www.elotouch.com/Products/LCDs/default.asp
) with Mac Minis in many exhibits. The Mac support is actually pretty good.
The ELOs support the Touch Base UPDD drivers for OS X (
 http://touch-base.com/documentation/MacOSXPlatformNotesV5.htm ). Using the
 UPDD Gestures driver ( http://touch-base.com/documentation/gestures.htm )
I've been able to get some basic muti-touch gestures to work on a Mac too.

ELOs are great because they have robust glass fronts that we don't have to
protect. Open frame models can be mounted in cabinets or walls, while the
desktop models can be mounted out on their own.

We've also used PQ Labs' multitouch overlays to turn bigger displays into
multitouch devices, but my personal experience with these is only in
Windows. They do say they support Macs (
 http://multitouch.com/product.html
 ).

[MCN-L] iPad kiosk with URL restrictions

Ditto on the Kiosk Pro comment. We use it on all our iPads. It works pretty
well.

features so navigating them all the first time might take a while but I?ve
 generally been happy with it.

  Greetings--

If this topic is a rehash, can someone please point me to an archive of
the original question? I am looking for an app that will allow me to run
an ipad (version 2 if it matters) in kiosk mode. Aside from blocking
access to other apps and settings on the ipad, I need to point the browser
at a searchable web site and restrict access to half a dozen or so URLs.

I was looking at eCrisper kiosk, which seems to have these features.
  Any other suggestions? Thanks!

[MCN-L] MCN annual conference proceedings

2014-01-08 Thread Ed Rodley
Actually, starting in 2012, MCN has begun videotaping conference sessions.
If you go to http://www.youtube.com/user/museumcn, you can watch select
sessions from 2012 and all of 2013. Twitter searches of the #mcn2012 and
#mcn2013 hashtags will also give you a view of what ideas conference
participants found most interesting.

Ed

there is *never* a dumb question !

Unfortunately, MCN does not archive proceedings (few presenters in fact
write a paper). The best you can do is look at the MCN conference site and
 see the program abstracts http://wired.ivvy.com/event/MCN13/agenda

if a presentation looks interesting, you may want to check their SlideShare
/ professional page for more information.

This is a great opportunity to pose the question: what are the benefits /
challenges of documenting conferences? as a historian I am all for it !
second question: what are the most efficient documentation forms?

idea: could MCN organizers in Dallas recruit a few bloggers?

[MCN-L] non-art museums buying DAMS?

2013-01-18 Thread Ed Rodley
Hi all,

I'm looking for people from non-art museums who have recently bought or
considered buying a DAMS. Anyone willing to share details on their
experiences, both in terms of how they internally decided their requirements
and what their rollout procedure looked like? Any leads appreciated.

Best,
