[MCN-L] DAM needed for large archaeological collection

2013-04-25 Thread Susan Fishman-Armstrong
I realize that this questions has probably been asked several times. Can
anyone recommend a Digital Asset Management for an *archaeological* based
collection? Or, if you are willing to share with me (offline) any programs
you would not recommend?

Our collections database is in Microsoft Access. I don't want to reinvent
the wheel for archiving (since there are already several good programs) and
would prefer using a proprietary program to manage our growing digital
collections (including scanned field notes, photos, etc.)

Thanks,

Susie

Cairie,

The one advantage of having the data in a spreadsheet (besides being able
to filter and search) would be that if your museum ever does implement a
CMS or DAMS, you can pretty easily import your records directly into the
new platform in xml format.

digitizing negatives, I've been recording the metadata into an excel

doesn't have a DAMS or CMS, I was thinking of embedding the metadata

using Photoshop. I successfully completed one image's embedded

metadata and it wasn't difficult or too time consuming. The REAL

question is...is it worth it? Should I just be doing the Dublin Core

metadata in the Excel sheet OR just the IPTC metadata in Photoshop? Or

is both great? Ultimately, I want to prep these photos so that if/when

they do get a DAMS, they'll be easily added to the system with all

 their information.

Any input or completely different suggestions would be greatly

 appreciated :D Thank you!!

[MCN-L] DAM needed for large archaeological collection

2013-04-25 Thread Pittsley, Christine
If you're looking for something tailored to archaeological collections you
might want to look at Shared
Shelfhttp://www.artstor.org/shared-shelf/s-html/shared-shelf-home.shtml. It
has integrated the ArchaeoCore metadata standard being developed at UVA.

Best,

Christine
