happy holidays

here's my wacky idea for anybody that wants to tackle it...
two characters mr cassette and mr. minidisc
mr."c" is 2x larger than mr."md" (samson/goliath)
they both have legs/hands sticking out (...remember mr hotdog mr
popcorn?)
first you see mr.cassette standing there..and then mr.minidisc
suddenly
appears and he goes right up to mr. cassette and kicks him in the nuts!
as soon as that happens mr. cassette's mouth* gets really big
(chipmunk-like)
and spits out another mr. minidisc!! then you repeat the process.

now that would be funny!

MD: Questions questions everywhere!!

1999-12-23 Thread Eoin Maguire

Hello everyone,

I've just subscribed to this list and have a question. I'm currently
building up my MD collection and own an AWIA F5 portable and a Sony (can't
remember the ID#) MD HIFI. I've mainly been filling my MDs with MP3 albums
and using "Arita" blanks that I get for 99p in Richer Sounds (Dublin,
Ireland). My questions are:
1) Is there anyone else from Ireland on this list?
2) If so do those people want to trade MDs?
3) Does anyone wanna swap CD's full of MP3s for recording on to MD?

Hope to hear from someone soon!

RE: MD: MXD-D3 Read Errors

1999-12-23 Thread Daryl O.

After I read your post, I grabbed a handful of MDs which were recorded
on various machines, and as far back as May of 1993. They all worked just
fine. It sounds to me like you probably have a defective unit.(Jim)

Thanks for your reply, Jim. You must be right, because the unit I exchanged
it with, works just fine. We had a really bad shipment of MXD-D3's that all
had visible signs of mishandling, so the optical pickup must have been
knocked off spec. I really love the D3. It's incredible, and I find that
the new-style remote with three letters on each button, isn't really too
hard to use. The 4x recording more than makes up for the increased time in
titling!

Daryl

P.S. I'm going to check out the Wal-marts in my area to see if any have
that Sanyo deck. My brother would love to have an MD deck in his car!

Hi Eoin,

Yes, yes and yes. Hi. I'm a Dub myself. Check out my list at
http://Keoght.tripod.com. If you're interested in anything, email me
directly and we might sort out a trade over Christmas.

Haven't heard of the Arita's before. What do you think of them?

Happy Christmas,
Tony

reduce the price again... They'd make a great entry-level unit for
those

Thanks for the note, this sounds fascinating. Any chance you can send
in a picture? I'm forwarding your note to the MD mailing list in case
others are familiar with this machine.

Egads, $65? That's cheap for ANYTHING MD! I've seen car tape players
cheaper than that. Could there have been an error in that it's really
 $165? And at Wal-Mart too???
Proof that MD is going mainstream? :)

Anyway, I found a picture of it at:
 http://www.sanyo.co.jp/AV/CEmedia_e/products/car/MDR-4/MDR4.html

Doesn't look as nice as the Sony's, but it sure as heck looks a lot more
 expensive than $65.

MD: DHC-MDX10 review.

1999-12-23 Thread Yiannis Patronis

I am very happy with my old MZ R-30 and I am not thinking of replacing it
yet. Nevertheless, I decided to look for a bookshelf system, because I
needed to be able to program recordings from radio to MD. The DHC-MDX10
seemed to me as the best solution and so I am posting the following review,
to anyone may interest.

The Advantages
-You can digitally adjust the recording level, when copying a CD, while on
pause mode or even on fly. Of course you can also adjust the recording level
when recording from the radio, or another analog source.
-You can very accurately divide a track, by splitting a certain second in 86
fractions.
-There is a 5 band graphic equalizer, with 15 factory presets, but you can
also create your own presets and store 5 personal settings in memory.
- There is a synchro equalizer function, which automatically selects a
preset, according to music genre.
- Variable Attenuation Control System (VACS), prevents clipping and keeps
the sound clean, even when it gets loud.
-Dynamic bass feedback, 2 steps control.
-There is also a synchro bass function, which automatically adjusts the
dynamic bass level according to music genre.
-The radio reception is very good.
-The CD player is very good too.
-There is a double cassette deck, with all the usual functions. The
recording performance is very good, but the recording level is only adjusted
automatically.
-Eventually, the price is excellent for a unit with all these features. It
costs about 500$ here in Greece.

The Disadvantages
-First of all the speakers. Of course when buying a bookshelf, you know that
the speakers will be second class quality, but I confess that I expected
something more, from my DHC-MDX10. The reason for my expectation is that
Sony had advertised very very well the new HOP material their bookshelf
speakers are made of and the new Quick Edge technology they use. So, I
expected something more. The truth is that the speakers have an excellent
performance in bass passages, but they are rather poor in middle and high
ranges. So, they are really impressive if you listen to hip hop music, quite
good for classic-rock, folk, soul and jazz, but disappointing for classical
and chorus music.
-The remote control has weak signal and performs only the basic functions.
-The MD has no date and time stamp.
-The surround function can not trick anybody.
-The appearance is quite aggressive. It took me 2 weeks to get used to it.

My opinion
I believe it s a very good choice for it s price, but I would prefer if Sony
made some improvements, even if they had to raise the price.

Merry Christmas to all,
Yiannis

From what are you recording? If you are using a portable CD player,

you might have a bad TOSlink patch or a loose connection somewhere.

MD: Portable CD with digital out

1999-12-23 Thread Troy Jones

I purchased a Sony D-E705 Discman portable from Walmart for $89.95. It
has a digital output. Also Radio Shack sells an adaptor to (I don't
know the correct names) adapt the larger optical connector as used on
home components to the smaller connector that is used on portable
equipment.

MD: Portable recorder recommendation

1999-12-23 Thread Hyung-song Nam

hi,
I'm in the market for a portable MD recorder or a player/deck combo.
My budget is ~$300, but I guess it could increase, if the product(s)
is worth it. What I really want is a small (~7cmx1.5-1.7cmx7cm) unit,
decent battery life, and good sound (MP3 players are small, but the
sound didn't quite cut it for me...). I'd like to solicit the
experts' (your) recommendations on small MD recorder or a good small
player/deck combo. Thank you!

  I'm thinking it's a bad TOSlink cable. I record from a XE-500 CD player
from Sony. It's a uh... Desktop, or whatever you call it. Component?
Something like that. :)

Re: MD: Portable recorder recommendation

1999-12-23 Thread Rodney Peterson

At first I didn't care for it, but the $225 JVC-XMR70 I bought on an
impulse is a decent MD recorder, excellent battery life, nice backlit
remote, attractive, slightly bigger than the Sony R55. Although it
doesn't have a dedicated line out, the headphone jack works as a line
out. By the way, I need to plug a pair of MD recorders (this one and
JVC-XMD1 or Sony R55) into a mixing board New Years Eve for a party. I
need RCA to XLR adapters. I've never used these before, so wondering
about cost and availability. I think Sam Ash carries them, so I'll try
to pick up a pair there.
