RE: MD: DVD's and CD-R/RW's

1999-12-24 Thread Simon Mackay

==BEGIN QUOTE==
In fact, I can record CD/RW's of DMX (Digital Music Express) and
dub them back to CD-R on my Marantz CD Recorder and the SCMS does not kick
in!!
END QUOTE=

Could the CD-RW unit that you recorded the DMX tracks onto be observing the
digital radio exception in its SCMS logic -- making a digital recording
derived from digital radio a "Penultimate" recording and the CD-Rs that you
make when you "boil-down" the CD-R/W be marked as "Final"?

The DMX box could be identifying itself as a "digital tuner" in its SP-DIF
Category Code and this is assessed as part of SCMS logic to allow recordings
of the SP-DIF stream to be marked as "Penultimate".

MD: Really off topic, lover's day tommorrow?

1999-12-24 Thread J. Coon

I wonder if my ISP is putting me on with this news flash. Since we get
so much of the MD equipment from over there, I thought I would ask an
international list about it.

TOKYO, Japan (Wireless Flash) – Although December 25 is a religious
holiday in much of the world, it has an altogether kinkier
connotation in Japan.

According to Tokyo-based venture capitalist Kazuo Haga,
December 25 in Japan is “Lovers’ Day,” a day when adulterous couples
openly spend “an enjoyable but very expensive night in a first-class
hotel.” Haga says tradition dictates the male partner spend about $1000
for a dinner and hotel and another $1000 on jewelry or designer goods.
Women are expected to spend nearly $500 on a watch or gloves for their
lover.
Amazingly, even though many of the lovers celebrating
Lovers Day are married to others, Haga says everything is out in the
open and the Japanese don’t view it as adultery.

MD: Is MD trading ILLEGAL?

1999-12-24 Thread Mitch P.

=== The original message was multipart MIME===
=== All non-text parts (attachments) have been removed ===

I would like to do some MD trading of some popular music groups. However, before I do,
I would like to know if it is in violation of the copyright laws to copy and trade
minidiscs which have been recorded from an original CD.
Does anyone have knowledge in this matter? Could you point me to any links which
explains the copyright law?
Has anyone heard of anyone being charged if it is indeed a violation of the law? I
have seen several reputable minidisc vendor sites which have links to MD trading
posts, its seems if MD trading is illegal, these vendors would not have links to these
MD trading sites.
Thanks,
Mitch

Don't start getting personal because you obviously have forgotten that
beauty is in the eye of the beholder and same rule applies to sound,
although it is now in the EAR of the beholder. Different headphones will
sound differently to different people as do speakers and whatnot.

Re: MD: Is MD trading ILLEGAL?

1999-12-24 Thread PrinceGaz

If the copyright on the original has not expired, giving copies of it to
anyone else while you retain the original is illegal in most jurisdictions.
If you did not legally obtain the original, you have no right whatsoever to
posess copies of it. If you wish to give someone else a copy, you must
give him the original from which the copy is made along with all other
existing copies made from that particular original.

More simply, "trading" copies of a copyrighted work is theft.
Rat [EMAIL PROTECTED]\ Warning: pregnant women, the elderly, and
Minion of Nathan - Nathan says Hi! \ children under 10 should avoid prolonged

Strictly speaking, that is true but there is some copyrighted material which is never
going to make the author, publisher or any other interested party any significant
cash and which on the internet moves into a grey-area of "not really legal, but not
harming anyone". Some of this material is almost impossible to legally obtain now
and the copyright holders would let it be lost forever except for individuals who
publish it for free on the net.

Yes, it's illegal. It's not a grey-area but a black-market albeit a free-of-charge
black
market. So I like to think it's a dark grey market. Although the material I'm talking
about above is classic arcade games, it could apply to any copyrighted material.

And without wanting to advertise, several hundred arcade ROMs that can be run
using MAME [Multi Arcade Machine Emulator] are available on my website linked
below, but *Please* note the usage instructions before deciding to spend all night
downloading the whole lot :-)

Uh-huh.

Portable headphones as a rule are weak in low range response simply because
of lack of size and power. Sony invented "megabass" as an attempt at
providing some kind of equalization to compensate for that weakness. And
then Sony started deliberately making their portable headphones and ear
buds weaker in the low end to compensate for megabass overload. Thppt.

I like my MDR-E888LP buds, I really do. I use them daily with my 702. As
ear buds go, they sound pretty good, and they might be in the running for
one of the best sets of ear buds you can find, and they certainly are the
best ear buds that Sony makes. But they are most definitely *not* "the
best sounding headphones that you can buy", not even close. My Sony
MDR-V600 headphones sound much better, and my Grado SR-60 headphones sound
better than the V600s (but are unfortunately less comfortable).

Check this out http://www.minidisc.org/ahra.html
and http://www.hrrc.org/audio.html
http://www.hrrc.org/ahrasum.html

It looks to me that is is legal to record it yourself, from the radio,
tv, a borrowed CD or what ever. Trading it is a little bit grey. It is
legal to borrow the CD and copy it though. Trading is only one step
removed from that.
